BPHS Ch.17 Verses 13+ — Chronically Sickly, Mars in 6H (Fever 6th/12th Year), Rahu+Mandi+Lagna-Lord-in-8H (TB Age 26)

The class finishes the 6th house chapter of BPHS from verse 13. A functional malefic in the 6th, the 6th lord with a functional malefic and Saturn with Rahu make a person who is always sick. Mars in the 6th with the 6th lord in the 8th gives fever in the 6th or 12th year; Moon and Jupiter in the 6th give leprosy in the 19th or 22nd; Rahu in the 6th, Mandi in a quadrant and the lagna lord in the 8th give tuberculosis in the 26th; the 6th and 12th lords in exchange give spleen disease in the 29th or 30th; Moon with Saturn in the 6th gives blood leprosy at 55. Along the way: Mars in the 6th is good and still gives hot diseases, a Viprita Raja Yoga has suffering built into it, and a combination found in one chart of 144 is never applied without its modifiers — shown on a student’s Aries-lagna chart.

Key principle

Whenever he gave excessively good or excessively bad results, he has given modifiers. So you should see where is the 6th lord, what are the other influences, who are aspecting.

Shashta Bhava Phaladhyayam — Always Sickly, Fever, Leprosy, Tuberculosis, Spleen

The previous class covered twelve and a half verses: the 6th and 8th lords in lagna with the Sun give danger of fever, and so on down a list for Mars, Mercury and the other planets. This class finishes the 13th verse and the rest of the chapter.

The teacher reads each verse, translates it himself, and at times checks the printed translation he has open.

Verse 13: Malefic in 6H + 6th Lord with a Malefic + Saturn with Rahu → Always Sick

"Rogasthana gate pape, tadishe papa samyute, Rahuna samyute Mande, sarvada roga samyutah"

All three together:

  • A papa in the 6th house — he reads papa as a functional malefic
  • The 6th lord is also with a functional malefic
  • Saturn is with Rahu

→ Sarvada roga samyutah: always accompanied by disease.

"It does not say what kind of disease. He is always sick, a sickly person."

Mars in 6H + 6th Lord in 8H → Fever in the 6th or 12th Year

  • Mars in the 6th house
  • 6th lord in the 8th house

→ Jwara rogi in the 6th or 12th year of life.

Literally "he will have fever". The teacher takes it as a big fever, or fever for a long time — it subsides and comes back — or a special fever such as malaria or typhoid. In that year there is a big problem relating to fever.

A student asks: is the 6th house not good for Mars?

  • Yes. For Mars the 6th is normally a good house. He gives material and financial success and victory over enemies.
  • But Saturn, Mars and the like are the planets who give health problems. Having them in the 6th is good, and it has a negative side too.
  • Mars in the 6th: the person wins over enemies — but he has enemies. In the same way he has strong resistance and gets cured faster — but he does get diseases.
  • Because the planet is Mars, the disease is of the hot kind.

"Sun and Mars will give fevers, boils."

Moon + Jupiter in 6H → Leprosy in the 19th or 22nd Year

  • Jupiter in the 6th house, and the Moon in the same house — Gajakesari yoga in the 6th

→ Kushtha roga (leprosy) in the 22nd year (dvavimsha) or the 19th (ekona vimsha, one less than twenty).

The teacher does not know where the years come from:

"I am clueless about how he comes up with these numbers just based on a couple of planets. Could be some kind of natural ages of those planets, some special dasha systems that we are unaware of."

Why this verse cannot be applied alone is taken up in Part 4.

Rahu in 6H + Mandi in a Quadrant + Lagna Lord in 8H → Tuberculosis in the 26th Year

"Rogasthanam gato Rahuh, kendre Mandi samanvite, lagneshe nasha rashi gate, shadvimshe kshaya roga"

  • Rahu in the 6th house
  • Mandi in a quadrant
  • Lagna lord in the nasha rashi — the house of destruction

→ Kshaya roga (TB, tuberculosis) in the 26th year.

Which house is the nasha rashi? A student answers the 8th. The teacher agrees, with a caveat:

"It is actually a little tricky. The word nasha literally means destruction. You can interpret any house, but 8th house is the house of vulnerability and death. So we will interpret it to be 8th house."

He checks the printed translation: it also reads Rahu in the 6th, lagna lord in the 8th, Mandi in an angle.

6th and 12th Lords in Exchange → Spleen Disease in the 29th or 30th Year

  • 12th lord in the 6th house
  • 6th lord in the 12th house

→ Gulma roga in the 30th year (trimshad varsha) or one less. The verse does not say one less than what, so it is one less than the number just given: the 29th.

Gulma is the spleen. It need not be the spleen exactly; it can be a disease in that region of the abdomen.

A student checks: is it the two lords together? No. It is the 12th lord in the 6th and the 6th lord in the 12th — an exchange.

A student asks: is this not normally a good combination? It is. A parivartana of the 6th and 12th is a Viprita Raja Yoga.

"These Viprita Raja Yogas are good materially. They will give you success, you will finally win over your enemies. But there can be some suffering also built into Viprita Raja Yogas."

Moon + Saturn in 6H → Blood Leprosy in the 55th Year

The printed verse reads shashina samyute — the Moon in the 6th house "with the Moon". That makes no sense. The teacher corrects the word to shanina: the Moon with Saturn in the 6th house. (He also notes a misprint in the word sthana.)

→ Rakta kushtha at the age of 55 (pancha panchashat).

  • The printed translation says 45. The teacher reads the Sanskrit as 55.
  • Rakta means blood, or red: blood leprosy or red leprosy. He says he is no expert in leprosy and does not know exactly which disease is meant.

No Verse Is Applied Alone — Modifiers

This came up over the Moon-Jupiter leprosy verse, when a student said he has that very combination.

How Common the Combination Is

  • Moon and Jupiter are together in 1 chart out of 12.
  • Of those, 1 in 12 has them in the 6th house.
  • So every 144th person born has Moon and Jupiter in the 6th.

"That is quite a high probability. And to believe that all of those will get leprosy in the 22nd and 19th year is not really very likely. So there are going to be some modifiers."

Where the Modifiers Come From

"At the end of the chapter, Parashara himself may indicate some modifiers. Even if he doesn't, in the previous chapters, whenever he gave excessively good or excessively bad results, he has given modifiers."

So look at:

  • where the 6th lord is
  • what other influences are on the house
  • who aspects it

A functional benefic changes the result. Mars in the 6th was called bad. But if Mars is also the 9th lord — a functional benefic, the lord who protects — he may not give that much disease.

The Student's Chart

No birth data is given in class; only these placements.

  • Aries lagna.
  • In the 6th house: Jupiter, Moon, Mercury and Ketu, with Saturn's aspect on the house.
  • Mercury is the 6th lord, in his own house. The student suggests Mercury is protecting.

The teacher's reading:

  • "There is a lot going on." Several other planets dominate that house, and they may be the ones who give its results.
  • Jupiter is the 9th lord. He modifies the result, and may even be protecting the native from the others.
  • Saturn is the badhakesha (lord of the 11th from a movable lagna) and Ketu is the 8th lord (Scorpio). Those two are the more problematic.

"Any problems that you may get, they may be related to those planets rather than Jupiter and Moon."
