Verse-by-Verse Rules

Notes on the Verses

Verse 1: The text reads sabalo; the teacher corrects it to sabale so that it agrees with bhagyape — "with sabalo there is no other tenable meaning."

Verse 2 — "strong" can mean many things: own sign, good planets aspecting or joining, not combust.

Verse 3 — why Venus in the 9th makes the father rich:

• 9th lord in the 9th is good; Jupiter and Venus there are benefics. In either case the native is fortunate.
• Jupiter is a sattvic planet. Venus is rajasic. Venus with the 9th house = fortune that comes in a rajasic way — you get it from your father or a fatherly figure.
• The verses up to here do not mention the Sun, yet the Sun matters when you look for fortune from the father.

Verse 4 — why the 2nd and 4th from the 9th:

• The result is poverty, not short life, so read the 2nd as the house of money, not as maraka.
• 2nd = movable wealth, accumulated money. 4th = immovable wealth — land, houses. To judge how wealthy anybody is, the two houses are the 2nd and the 4th.
• For the father, count them from the 9th.
• Mars is named only as an example of a malefic. Karakatva is not the point. Saturn would probably give the same result; so would Rahu and Ketu.
• Look at occupants and aspectors of the 2nd and 4th from the 9th.
• Wider lesson: any house can be counted from the 9th to read things about the father.

Verse 6: A very simple condition — you will see it in many charts. Take it with a pinch of salt. 9th lord in a kendra with Jupiter's aspect is good for the 9th house, but it may show only that the native is fortunate. Conclude about the father only if the Dvadasamsa 9th is also fortified.

Verse 7: The 9th–10th exchange does not necessarily make the father famous or rich. It shows the person doing many good deeds. Very likely the verse has to be read in Dvadasamsa.

Verse 8: Sun is karaka for father, for the relation with him, and for recognition from kings — deep exaltation gives both results. The 11th is the house of friends: 9th lord there = friendly with the father. Also many gains.

Verse 9: 9th lord in the 7th is in a kendra, so strong. The 7th is the house of interactions — he interacts a lot with his father; the father is like a friend. The 7th and 11th are both houses of friends. Jupiter joining or aspecting adds auspiciousness. Sun, karaka of father, in a trine keeps the relation good.

Verse 10 — why the 32nd year: "Like always, we can't really crack why the 32nd year." The 2nd–9th exchange is plainly good for fortune and making money.

Verse 11: Lagna lord in the 9th by itself is fine for attachment to the father. The 6th lord brings the fight. Lesson: 6th lord, 8th lord — dusthana lords — joining the 9th house or 9th lord show bad things.

Verse 12: The verse says the 3rd lord is "also" (api) weak, which implies the 10th lord is weak too. The teacher says there are two readings; the one he gives is: 10th and 3rd lords together and both weak, and 9th lord debilitated or combust.

Caveats (PVNR)

A student asks how anyone can remember these while reading a chart — "so many charts we did, we never considered any."

1. Which chart? Parasara gave Chaturthamsa (D4) for bhagya. The 9th house is bhagya, so Navamsa is a candidate too. It is not clear whether the verses are for Rasi, Navamsa or D4.
2. Father needs D12. Parasara gave Dvadasamsa for parents, and the 9th house and the 9th from the Sun for father. Saying "your father is a rich man" from one Rasi combination is imprudent.
3. The combinations do not work as they stand. There is no need to memorise them.

"There is no real need to remember all these combinations, if you ask me. The idea is to understand the philosophy … understand the fundamentals and understand the thinking style."
