BPHS Ch.14 Verse 5: 3L in Kendra+Mars in Trine+3L Exalted+Jupiter=12 Siblings(Flourishing Family); Specific Combination Table(Mercury+Moon+Saturn=Sister+Brother); Verse 14: Sun in 3H=Kills Elder; Saturn=Kills Younger; Mars=Kills BOTH; D3 Maraka Association with Sun/Saturn/Mars=Potency

Verse 5 (extraordinary sibling wealth): conditions — (1) 3rd lord in a Kendra; (2) Mars in trine from the 3rd lord's position; (3) 3rd lord exalted or own/friendly sign; (4) 3rd lord with Jupiter → "12 brothers." PVNR: "12 brothers = too literal in modern context; means large flourishing family with many siblings; all strength indicators combined for the 3rd house." Further detail from verse: out of 12, 2 are elder; the 3rd, 7th, 9th, and 12th siblings are short-lived; remaining 6 are long-lived. PVNR note: "These highly specific verses may be based on Parashara's observation of one real family and may have been added by later compilers; limited practical use for most students." Specific combination table: Mercury in 3H + 3rd lord with Moon + Mars with Saturn = one elder sister and one younger brother; Moon in 3H + Mars with 12th lord + Jupiter = 7 siblings; Moon in 3H aspected only by male planets = predominantly brothers; Moon in 3H with Venus aspecting = predominantly sisters; Mars with Rahu + 3rd lord debilitated = born after 3 siblings, no younger siblings. "Universal principles are more reliable than these highly specific combinations." Verse 14 (general malefics in 3H): Sun in 3H = kills elder sibling (agrajam); Saturn in 3H = kills younger sibling (prushtajam, born after); Mars in 3H = kills both elder AND younger siblings. Extension for D3 (Drekkana) analysis: when analyzing Maraka planets for a specific sibling in D3 = if the Maraka is associated with Sun → more potent for killing elder sibling; associated with Saturn → more potent for younger sibling; associated with Mars → potent for any sibling.

"Benefic planets when associated with any house bring good results to that house. The lord of the house or karaka, if they are associated, it is good. If they are afflicted, it is bad."

— P.V.R. Narasimha Rao

BPHS — Sahaja Bhava Phaladhyayam (3rd House Effects)

Chapter 14 in Santhanam's version. Parashara focuses predominantly on siblings — their existence, gender, number, and longevity — rather than bravery/initiative (though the opening verse mentions both).

Verse 1: Natural Benefics in/Aspecting 3rd House → Siblings and Bravery

"Sahajaye saumya yuk drushte, bhratu man vikrami naraha"

— PVNR
  • Saumya = natural benefics (Jupiter, Venus, Mercury, waxing Moon)
  • Yuk drushte = occupied by or aspected by

Rule: If the 3rd house is occupied by or aspected by a natural benefic → the person has siblings AND is brave/bold (Vikrami).

Important distinction from what was taught before:

  • Previously: natural malefics in/aspecting the 3rd house → boldness in terms of perceived image (especially from Arudha Lagna)
  • Here: natural benefics → actual boldness, strong initiative; this is real strength, not just perception
  • Malefics may make one look bold; benefics make one genuinely bold with initiative

Verses 2–3: 3rd Lord + Mars Association → Good vs Bad Sibling Results

Verse 2 — Positive:

"Sabhomo bhratr bhavesho, bhratrabhavam prapaśyati, bhratrakshetra gato bhapi, bhratu bhaavam vinithhi shreyad"

— PVNR
  • Sabhomo = with Mars (the Karaka for 3rd house)
  • Bhratr bhavesho = the 3rd lord
  • Prapashyati = aspects (or gato = is in) the 3rd house

Rule: If the 3rd lord is with Mars AND aspects the 3rd house (or occupies it) → good results for siblings (they will exist, happiness from siblings).

Interpretation of "with Mars": Can mean:

  • Conjunct with Mars (same house), OR
  • Both separately aspecting the 3rd house from different positions

Example: 3rd lord Jupiter in Leo aspecting Sagittarius (3rd house), and Mars in Virgo also aspecting Sagittarius. Both are aspecting the 3rd house. This qualifies.

Verse 3 — Negative:

"Papa yogena tau, papa kshetra yogena vapuna, upaccha sahajan sadhyo nihantarona samsehah"

— PVNR
  • Papa yogena = afflicted by malefic planets
  • Papa kshetra yogena = placed in malefic signs (kshetra = sign, not house here)

Rule: If the 3rd lord AND Mars are either afflicted by malefic planets OR placed in malefic signs → they destroy siblings.

Malefic signs (by nature): Scorpio, and other signs ruled by or associated with natural malefics.

Key lesson from verses 2–3:

"Benefic planets when associated with any house bring good results to that house. The lord of the house or karaka, if they are associated, it is good. If they are afflicted, it is bad."

— PVNR

Verse 4: Female/Male Planets → Gender of Siblings

"Bhaginisyat tatha bhratu pungrahe pungrahoyadi, trigurhobhatr bhavagah"

— PVNR
  • Stri graha (female planets) = Moon, Venus
  • Pum graha (male planets) = Sun, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury (context-dependent)

Rules:

  • Female planet owning or occupying the 3rd house → predicts sisters (Bhagini)
  • Male planet or male sign associated with the 3rd house → predicts brothers
  • Mixed influences → judge by strength and balance (see Rule 5 below)

Extension: When counting individual siblings using Drekkana (D3):

  • Previously: looked only at the 3rd lord's sign and the planets with it to determine male/female
  • Parashara adds: also look at the occupant(s) of the 3rd house itself (3rd bhava) not just the 3rd lord
  • Male or female sign of the 3rd house is another factor to include

Verse 4 (Extension): Mixed Influences — Judge by Strength

"Mishra mishra phalam vachyam, bala-abala vinirnayat"

— PVNR

If there are mixed male/female influences (some male planets, some female planets, male signs, female signs), the result is mixed. Determine the balance by judging the strength and weakness of each planet involved (Balaabhala = strength and weakness analysis).

Mrutavastha of 3rd Lord and Mars → Siblings Harmed

"Mrutau kujatritiyesho, tahodara vinashakau"

— PVNR
  • Mrutau = in Mrutavastha (dead state)
  • Kuja = Mars; Tritiyesho = 3rd lord

Rule: If Mars AND the 3rd lord are both in Mrutavastha → they cause destruction to siblings.

Mrutavastha review (Sapta Nadi Avasthas — degree-based states within signs):

Degrees in SignOdd SignsEven Signs
0°–6°Bala (child)Mrutha (dead)
6°–12°Kumara (adolescent)Vriddha (old)
12°–18°Yuva (youthful = BEST)Yuva (youthful = BEST)
18°–24°Vriddha (old)Kumara (adolescent)
24°–30°Mrutha (dead)Bala (child)
  • Yuva (youthful): most productive, best for giving results
  • Bala/Kumara: immature, some results but incomplete
  • Vriddha: experienced but lacking energy, partial results
  • Mrutha (dead): worst — planet cannot give its results; if 3rd lord + Mars both in Mrutha → siblings suffer

PVNR caveat: Even in Mrutavastha, if these planets are in exaltation or Moolatrikona, the destruction is unlikely to manifest. Always need corroborating afflictions.

Verse 5: 3rd Lord in Kendra + Mars in Trine from Him + 3rd Lord Exalted with Jupiter → 12 Siblings

"Kendra trikona kevapi, swotya mitra swavarga ke, 3rd lord... ucche Jiva sahito, Mars in trine, gneya dwadasha bhratra"

— PVNR

Conditions:

  1. 3rd lord in a kendra (quadrant)
  2. Mars is in a trine from the 3rd lord's position (not from Lagna)
  3. 3rd lord is exalted (or own sign or friendly sign, particularly in D3)
  4. 3rd lord is with Jupiter

Gneya dwadasha bhratra = 12 brothers (extreme wealth of siblings)

PVNR note: "12 brothers" = too literal in modern context (family sizes have shrunk). Take it to mean a large, flourishing family with many siblings. The important point is that all strength indicators are combined for the 3rd house.

Further elaboration (subsequent specific verses):

  • Out of the 12 siblings, 2 are elder siblings
  • The 3rd, 7th, 9th, and 12th siblings will be short-lived
  • The remaining 6 will be long-lived

PVNR notes these highly specific verses may be based on Parashara's observation of a particular real family and may have been added by later compilers. Very difficult to verify but interesting to observe.

Other Specific Combinations for Siblings (Summary)

CombinationResult
Mercury in 3H + 3rd lord with Moon + Mars with SaturnOne elder sister, one younger brother; 3rd sibling after younger one dies
Mars with Rahu + 3rd lord debilitatedPerson born after 3 siblings; no younger siblings
Moon in 3H + Mars with 12th lord + Jupiter also conjoined7 siblings
Moon in 3H aspected only by male planetsSiblings predominantly brothers
Moon in 3H with Venus aspectingSiblings predominantly sisters

PVNR's practical note: These very specific combinations are of limited practical use for most students. The general principles (below) are more universally applicable.

Verse 14 (General Malefics in 3H): Sun, Saturn, Mars → Kill Elder/Younger Siblings

"Agrajam prushta jam hanti sahajastho dharasutah. Agrejatam ravihanti, prushtajam sanishcharaha."

— PVNR
Planet in 3rd HouseKills
SunElder sibling (agrajam)
SaturnYounger sibling (prushtajam = one born after)
MarsBoth elder AND younger siblings (sahajastho = in the 3rd house)

Important extension for Drekkana analysis: When looking at Maraka planets for a specific sibling in the Drekkana chart:

  • If the Maraka is associated with Sun → becomes more potent for killing that elder sibling
  • If the Maraka is associated with Saturn → becomes more potent for killing a younger sibling
  • If the Maraka is associated with Mars → becomes potent for any sibling
