Verse 5 Onward — Happiness from Siblings, the Specific Combinations, Sun/Saturn/Mars in the 3rd

Verse 5: Karaka or 3rd Lord in Kendra/Trikona or in Exaltation/Friendly/Own Varga → Happiness from Siblings

"Kendra trikone vapi, svoccha mitra svavargake, karake sahajeshe va, bhratru saukhyam vinirdishet"

• Kendra trikone = in a quadrant or a trine
• Svoccha = own exaltation sign; mitra = friendly sign; svavarga = own varga
• Karake sahajeshe va = the karaka (Mars) or the 3rd lord. The printed text reads ya; it should be va ("or"). Ya in Sanskrit is the feminine "who" and does not fit here — a typing error.
• Bhratru saukhyam vinirdishet = happiness from siblings should be told

Which varga? Not obvious. Could be Rasi, Navamsa or Drekkana — probably all three. Rasi and Navamsa are always key, and then there is the one varga specific to the matter. Parashara said at the start of BPHS that siblings are seen from Drekkana, so that varga is D-3.

Rule: The key planets are again the 3rd lord and Mars. In quadrants or trines, or in exaltation, own or friendly sign → happiness from siblings. Moolatrikona is covered: for every planet it is either the own sign or the exaltation sign.

One Elder Sister, One Younger Brother, the Third Dies

• Mercury in the 3rd house (bha = sign; the sign holding the 3rd house)
• 3rd lord with Moon
• Karaka Mars with Saturn (Manda)

Result: one elder sister born before the native, then the native, then one younger brother. The third sibling, born after the younger brother, will die.

A rare combination. Whether it is to be read in Rasi or in Drekkana is not obvious. PVNR has no examples; if you find one it will be interesting to verify.

Born After Three, None After

• Karaka Mars with Rahu
• 3rd lord in debilitation

Result: no siblings after the native — he is the last. Three siblings before him.

Mars with Rahu is common (a 1-in-12 chance). So this one is not so rare, and examples may be found.

Twelve Siblings

• 3rd lord in a quadrant
• Karaka Mars in a trine from the 3rd lord (tat trikone — from him, not from lagna)
• The 3rd lord with Jupiter
• The 3rd lord exalted

So: 3rd lord exalted in a kendra with Jupiter, and Mars in a trine from him → twelve brothers.

• Twelve siblings are rare today. In the old days people had ten or fifteen.
• With this combination now, do not expect twelve brothers. It means plenty of siblings, a big family.
• The 3rd house has been strengthened in every way here — every kind of positive is named, so a very positive result is given.

The following verse is more specific still:

• Of the twelve, two are elder to the native; the rest are younger.
• The 3rd, 7th, 9th and 12th will be short-lived.
• The remaining six will be long-lived.

"This seems too specific. It seems as though there was one person he knows and then he made the combination based on that person."

Seven Siblings

• Moon in the 3rd house
• Mars joined by the 12th lord, or joined by Jupiter

Result: seven siblings.

Moon in the 3rd: Brothers or Sisters

• Moon in the 3rd aspected only by male planets → the siblings are predominantly brothers.
• If Venus aspects → the reverse; predominantly sisters.

How Much to Trust These Specific Verses

"The previous few verses are very, very specific combinations that will probably never be useful to us."

• The standard principles for reckoning each sibling are more useful in practice.
• Still, if you find an example, validate it. These verses could be from Parashara, or somebody could have made them up from the people he knew and added them. We do not know for sure.

Verse 14: Sun, Saturn, Mars in the 3rd House

"Agre jatam ravir hanti, prushte jatam shanaischarah. Agrajam prushtajam hanti sahajastho dharasutah."

A generic verse, and a useful guideline.

Bottom line: malefics associated with the 3rd house are bad for siblings. Sun is the planet for not having the happiness of elder siblings. Saturn is the planet for not having younger siblings. Mars is malefic for all of them.

What the verse hints at — marakas in Drekkana:

Apart from these planets sitting in the 3rd, apply it when you look at the marakas of an individual sibling in Drekkana (taking the 3rd lord, 5th lord and so on, as done before):

• A maraka of an elder sibling associated with Sun → more potent to kill.
• A maraka of a younger sibling associated with Saturn → more potent to kill.
• Mars association → in either case. Take the sign of the lord of that sibling: the lord of the 2nd from it joined by Mars becomes a killer; Mars sitting in the 7th from it becomes a killer.

"When you look at the killers for siblings, pay special attention to Mars for all cases and Sun and Saturn respectively for elder and younger siblings."

With these combinations, mixing strengths and weaknesses properly, give the results for the brothers and sisters of the native.
