D10 Career Analysis — Amshas, Combustion & Antardasha Reading

Example Chart

A student volunteers his chart. The class is asked to do the reading; PVNR only steers.

Chart Data:

• DOB: June 13, 1949 | Time: 10:55 AM IST (noted at birth; the native allows about ±5 minutes) | South India
• Rashi Lagna: Leo, about 6°46'. Saturn (7th lord) is in Lagna.
• Navamsha Lagna: Gemini at the given time
• D-4 Lagna: Leo
• D-10 Lagna: Libra at the given time. 2 min 55 s earlier it becomes Virgo; 9 min 10 s later it becomes Scorpio. Scorpio is ruled out by the ±5 minutes. The class settles on Virgo as more likely, Libra still possible.

His question: palmists and astrologers told him he would leave his job and become a businessman. He is in service. Will it happen, and when?

Career history (as the native gives it):

• Aug 2, 1971 – early 1985: one cement company in India. Mechanical engineer; project cost estimation, material planning, procuring steel. Nobody reported to him.
• February 1985: came to the USA
• 1985–1993: many odd jobs, hard physical work, very unstable; unemployed Sept 1992 – Oct 1993 (13 months)
• Oct 25, 1993: new job in computer network engineering; a total change of field, and he is still in it
• Laid off four times in the USA; two of them came without warning. Two layoffs close together: the Monday after Thanksgiving 2000, and April 2001
• Changed jobs (not laid off) in 1996–98; bought his house during 1993–2002

Short Jobs Do Not Show in the Lifetime Chart

A student asks whether jobs held for two or three months should be read too.

• A job of a few months is a side influence. It shows in that year's annual chart, not as the theme of the Dasamsha.
• The Dasamsha shows work that lasted long, or work in which much was achieved: money, fame or satisfaction. Career is the karma you do for society.

"The theme of his career is something that lasted for a long time, or even if something was short, something in which either he made a lot of money or a lot of fame or got a lot of satisfaction."

D-10 Career Chart: Detailed Analysis

D-10 Placements

The planets fall in the same D-10 signs whichever lagna is taken:

• Libra: Venus (own sign, Moolatrikona), Saturn (exalted), Sun (debilitated)
• Virgo: Moon
• Scorpio: Jupiter
• Aries: Mars
• Gemini: Mercury
• Leo: Rahu; Aquarius: Ketu

Amsha rulers (Dikpalas): Venus in Varuna, Saturn in Yama, Rahu in Indra, Sun in Indra, Mars in Kubera, Moon in Ananta.

Venus Dasha: The Long, Stable Job

Jupiter–Sun started the job in 1971. He stayed through the rest of Jupiter Dasha and all 9 years of Venus Dasha.

Venus in Varuna Amsha:

• Varuna rules the western direction, like Saturn. (Vayu is different: wind, strength.)
• Varuna = patience, perseverance, far reach, dealing with many people, trading, dealing with supplies
• It can show business, or handling somebody else's business

Sun vs. Venus management:

• Sun = management like a king: sit in the chair and tell people what to do
• Venus = micromanagement: detailed planning, a project manager going through every task, or as here, procurement management

Libra and its three planets (the people he dealt with):

• Libra = sign of balance, diplomacy, dealing with people
• Saturn = labourers, people on the lower rung
• Debilitated Sun = moody, sometimes angry bosses
• Venus is dealing with both

Which Lagna Explains Venus Dasha?

A stable service career needs the dasha lord tied to the Artha Trikona (2nd, 6th, 10th).

• Libra lagna: Venus in Lagna has no link with the 2nd, 6th or 10th except Argala on the 10th house, Cancer. A stable career is possible, but the link is thin.
• Virgo lagna: Venus is 2nd lord in the 2nd, with 6th lord Saturn. Two of the three Artha Trikona lords sit together in the 2nd. The career is defined by the resources he handles more than by the service he renders.
• Verdict at this stage: Virgo makes more sense, Libra cannot be ruled out. More events are needed.

Combustion (a Student's Question)

Asked whether Venus's combustion plays a part. PVNR:

• Combustion is seen in the Rashi chart, not in divisional charts. A divisional chart does not show how far apart two planets are.
• Still, Venus here is with the Sun. Venus in Moolatrikona and exalted Saturn are both spoiled by the debilitated Sun. A debilitated Sun weakens the combustion; it is not as bad.
• A planet with the Sun is like a man standing next to the king: he keeps his mouth shut and cannot be himself.
• Distance matters. Only a planet close to the Sun is combust; 10° apart is no big deal.
• Jupiter and Mars are friends of the Sun. Close to the Sun, it is no big deal for them.
  • Mars is fire like the Sun. He is the army chief, the one man who can dictate terms to the king.
  • Jupiter is the priest. He too can tell the king what to do, in a different way.
• Venus suffers most. When Parashurama (Venus) came before Rama (Sun), his power passed to Rama. Venus is Jala Tattva and the Sun is Agni Tattva: the water evaporates.

The other direction: planets that harm the Sun

• If Saturn, Rahu or Ketu is with the Sun, the Sun is in trouble
• Saturn is the rebel son who hates his father. With Saturn on the Sun, or aspecting the Sun in transit, the Sun is weak: not a time to start anything important. But Saturn close to the Sun is "not that terrible".
• Rahu or Ketu with the Sun is the worst. They eclipse him. Think of spies or terrorists getting close to the king.
• In the annual chart of a head of government in an election year, Rahu or Ketu very close to the Sun can cost the election whatever the other strengths, because the Sun is the karaka of power.
• PVNR's own mistake: Chandrababu Naidu's annual chart had the Sun closely afflicted by Rahu. He ignored it because of other strengths in the chart, and because he wanted Naidu to return.

"When Rahu eclipses Sun, he does eclipse Sun."

Rectifying Every Chart First?

A student asks whether one should fix the Shashtyamsha before advising anyone. PVNR: ideally yes, perfect guidance is not possible without it, but it needs very accurate time. In practice, take the divisional chart for the matter asked, make sure that chart is right, and predict from it.

Saturn Dasha (to 1993): Odd Jobs

• Saturn = planet of labour and of doing anything at all. The Sun wants a position; Saturn is made to do whatever comes.
• Saturn in Yama Amsha → doing your dharma without passion. Routine: you do it because it must be done, with no emotion and perhaps no enjoyment.
• Confirmed: odd jobs and hard labour from his arrival in 1985 to 1993, with unemployment too.
• Why he came to the USA is not a Dasamsha matter. That is D-4 (Part 5).

Layoffs and Mars in the 8th

• 8th house = layoff. 3rd house = a short break in career.
• From Virgo lagna the 8th is Aries, with Mars in it. Aries is a movable sign of suddenness; Mars is the soldier.
• Mars in the 8th = career changes that come suddenly and unexpectedly. Two of his layoffs came just like that.
• This supports Virgo lagna.

Rahu Dasha (1993–2002): Vipareeta Raja Yoga

• 13 months unemployed up to October 1993. Then, in Rahu–Rahu, a job.
• From Virgo, Rahu is 6th lord in the 12th: a dusthana lord in a dusthana = Vipareeta Raja Yoga, the reversed Raja Yoga. First bad, then the bad situation is reversed. His dasha began badly and then turned.
• Rahu–Rahu–Moon (job on Oct 25, 1993): the pratyantardasha must be the perfect one. Moon is in Lagna of D-10, and Lagna in Dasamsha = new beginnings in career.
• Why computers? Rahu and Ketu are the planets of computers, electronics, high-tech. The dasha is no longer Saturn's, so no more hard labour.

Rahu in Indra Amsha — how far it goes:

• Indra = power, like a king. The native confirms: more satisfaction, some stability, some influence at work.
• A planet in Indra amsha gives a big position when it is the 5th or Lagna lord, sits in the 5th or 1st, or gives a Raja Yoga.
• Here Rahu sits in a dusthana and gives only Vipareeta Raja Yoga. So: influence around his workplace, people listen to him, but no big boss.
• With Libra lagna the same Rahu would be 5th lord in Indra amsha, and he would have been a big manager. He was not. Another point for Virgo.
• On the two layoffs in the middle of this dasha, PVNR: "Sometimes Indra also gets laid off."

Reading an Antardasha: Count from the Dasha Lord

The class is asked to guess when in Rahu Dasha the layoffs came. One guess: Rahu–Mars, 1996–98. Wrong; he only changed jobs then.

• From Lagna, Mars is in the 8th: changes.
• From Rahu (the dasha lord taken as lagna), Mars is in the 9th, in his own sign: Bhagya.
• So Mars antardasha in Rahu Dasha gives a change, and the change is a fortunate one.
• Mars's own dasha would be bad: many changes and some layoffs.

"Don't think that Mars antardasha will always have a particular nature. Mars antardasha in different dashas will have different nature."

The Three Amshas Line Up

• Venus in Varuna amsha = dealing with many people, planning, micromanagement
• Saturn in Yama amsha = routine work done as duty
• Rahu in Indra amsha = some success, an influential position, high-tech

"Had we tried to explain this with Vimshottari Dasha, we will be able to explain many events, when he got job, when he was laid off, but things would not line up so well. On the other hand, because we have the right Dasha in front of us, things line up perfectly."

Parashara taught hundreds of dashas. PVNR's software has about 50; he left out those not clear from Parashara's text.

Result Exchange Rule for Conjunct Planets

The Layoffs Came in Venus Antardasha

• A student picks Rahu–Saturn (May 2001 – July 2002) for the layoffs.
• Fact: both layoffs, late November 2000 and April 2001, fell in Rahu–Venus. And Rahu–Saturn, as the native confirms, was better than the period before it.
• PVNR: the student's logic for Saturn was perfect. Venus delivered Saturn's result.

The Rule

Planets placed together give each other's results.

• Two planets together simply exchange (in D-4, Venus is with Moon: Venus antardasha gives Moon's results and Moon's gives Venus's).
• With more than two: arrange them from most benefic to most malefic. The first and the last exchange, the second and the second-from-last exchange, the third and third-from-last, and so on. With nine planets: 1st ↔ 9th, 2nd ↔ 8th, 3rd ↔ 7th.
• With an odd number, the middle planet has nobody to exchange with and gives its own results.
• "This is always the case. There can be some exceptions, but this is the rule."

"If you and I are living together, I will start behaving like you and you will start behaving like me. If your friend comes to pick up something from you, I will go and give it to him."

This chart (Venus, Sun, Saturn in Libra):

• Order: Venus → Sun → Saturn
• Venus ↔ Saturn exchange. Sun gives his own results.
• Venus antardasha gave Saturn's results: the two layoffs
• Saturn antardasha gave Venus's results: a good period

Class exercise (Jupiter, Venus, Sun, Saturn together):

• Order: Jupiter → Venus → Sun → Saturn
• Jupiter ↔ Saturn: Saturn's period gives Jupiter's results, Jupiter's gives Saturn's
• Venus ↔ Sun: Venus gives Sun's results, Sun gives Venus's

7th Lord as Maraka for Service

Why Saturn is the troublemaker, counted from the dasha lord Rahu (Leo):

• 6th house = service, the main house of the work you do
• 7th = 2nd from the 6th = maraka for service. When the maraka of the 6th operates there is no service to offer: "you sit at home, type your resume."
• The end of service can come from starting a business (7th = desire, business) or from a layoff.
• 3rd = short break; 8th = long break. If the 7th lord is tied to the 3rd or 8th house, expect a break in career, a layoff, or at least a vacation.
• Saturn is the 7th lord from Rahu (Aquarius), placed in the 3rd from Rahu (Libra). He is also 6th lord, both from Rahu and from Virgo lagna.

Why Venus by his own nature would not break the service:

• From Rahu he is 3rd lord in the 3rd, which can give a short break or a vacation, but he is also 10th lord of career
• From Virgo lagna he is 2nd lord of resources and 9th lord of fortune
• He is neither 7th lord nor 8th lord from Rahu or from Lagna

So Saturn carries the break, Venus carries the good, and they deliver each other's results.

A student asks about using Arudha Padas here. PVNR: they can be used, but Lagna alone is working well, so stay with it.
