Planetary Abilities in Swamsa/Trines — Planet-by-Planet

One stanza per planet. The planet must be in the Navamsa Lagna, in a trine to it, or aspecting it by rasi drishti.

Ability is not occupation

PVNR interrupted on the very first stanza:

"Not necessarily all politicians are likely to have Sun in Navamsa Lagna or trines, because Navamsa Lagna and trines show abilities of a person. So if Sun is there, whether the person is a politician or not, he is good at administration."

• Some politicians have administrative ability, some do not, and some non-politicians have it in plenty.
• The same for Rahu. A student objected to "thief". The answer: look at the positive influences too, and the career is never settled by this. It is an ability, and it may not manifest.

Administration vs. Management (Sun vs. Venus)

A student asked for the difference.

• Sun — administration. Divide the work into parts and delegate it. Like a king: "You do this. From now on I don't care how." The visionary.
• Venus — management. A manager comes below an administrator. Venus is a micromanager, like a project manager: divide the work, monitor it, make sure it is going right.
• Why Venus: he is the teacher of the demons. He tells each demon what to do but does not have full control over them, so he must keep looking over them.

Why Venus gives a hundred years

• Shukra is also the word for semen — hence virile.
• A student guessed "because his is the last dasa". Not the reason.
• Venus has the blessing of Mrityunjaya. The Mrityunjaya mantra is what Shiva taught Shukra, and it confers longevity.
• Of the twelve Jyotirlingas, Tryambakeshvara is the one mapped to Pisces, where Venus is exalted.

Why Saturn gives success in any line

• Hard work and discipline. There is no substitute for hard work.
• Narayana quoted Einstein: success is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration.

Rahu and Ketu

• Rahu is big machines; Ketu is small instruments. Computers come under Ketu, not Rahu.
• Mars is called Guha, the one who hides. Ketu is an extreme form of Mars in this.
• Ketu's moolatrikona is Pisces, and he is the Matsya Avatara, who rescued the Vedas. So Ketu rescues knowledge and continues the line of it. Ketu with Jupiter on the Navamsa Lagna shows one born to spread a parampara: Ketu is the continuity, Jupiter the Vedic or traditional knowledge.

Art: Mercury and Venus

• Fine art is Venus. But there are two levels.
• First level: Mercury. Like a student, Mercury copies. An artist who draws well begins by copying what is in front of him.
• Then Venus brings the creative part and he does his own work.
• So an artist who draws shows both Mercury and Venus on the Navamsa Lagna.
• Venus is creativity. Moon is imagination, singing, artistic ability.
• Water signs matter for creativity: water creates, earth maintains.
• Moon and Mercury in trine is the classical combination for acting.

Lagnamsaka Dasha — When Navamsa Abilities Manifest

A student asked when the abilities seen in the Navamsa will show.

• During the periods of the planets concerned — mahadasa, and more so antardasa. The mahadasa is too long a period; the antardasa brings out what the mahadasa promises.
• Also see what yogas those planets take part in.
• PVNR: there is a special dasa for seeing when the abilities shown in Navamsa come out in a practical, physical way. Vimshottari may not be the best dasa for this. The name is garbled on the recording; the class notes give it as Lagnamsaka Dasa, a dasa reckoned in the Navamsa. It is available in the software. He said he would teach it later.

Planetary Combination Rules (Detailed)

After the single planets, the stanzas take combinations. They are to be seen on the Navamsa Lagna or in trines to it. "Aspect" means rasi drishti.

Sun + Rahu

• Snake bite still happens. Extend it to any crawling creature, and to any poison in the body: consuming poison, a drug overdose. It is a good combination for seeing drug addiction and narcotics.
• PVNR asked for charts of people who died of snake bite, as an assignment. It is not known whether the stanza means the Lagnamsa or the Karakamsa. That is interpretation, and it needs examples.

Why Venus is the firefighter

• Venus is Shukra, the cool water that cools everything down. An ambulance is also Venus — seeing one while talking of something is a nimitta of Venus.
• A student objected that Venus owns no water sign. He is exalted in one. And among the five planets apart from the luminaries: Mars is fire, Mercury earth, Jupiter akasha, Venus water, Saturn air.
• Mahalakshmi holds the Agni Stambhana mantra, which checks fire.
• After spicy food one takes buttermilk or yogurt. Yogurt is Venus.

Why Jupiter burns his own house

• A student objected that Jupiter is a benefic who does good deeds.
• Narayana: Jupiter is expansive, so the fire becomes a conflagration.
• PVNR: Jupiter is Maheshvara. Shiva is the greatest Guru and the ultimate destroyer of the whole world, because it is all maya. This is complete destruction.

"Don't think that Jupiter will give you money, nice sofas, a nice TV. That's not Jupiter. That's Venus."

Saturn + Rahu in Swamsa

• A seller or consumer of betel leaves or aphrodisiacs.
• Extended in class to drugs, alcohol, addictive substances in general.

Moon in the 4th from Swamsa

• Produces a sailor.
• With the aspect of Venus on that Moon it will surely produce a sailor or navigator.
• The translator's note: vehicles are seen from the 4th; a watery planet like the Moon there can show ships and boats, depending on its dignity; Venus, the natural significator of vehicles, confirms it.
• Narayana's father is a sailor. He has Moon in the 4th from the Navamsa Lagna, with no aspect of Venus, but in a sign of Venus.

Gulika in Swamsa

• Makes the native consume poison, or poison others. Nothing in the stanza settles which.
• Gulika, like Saturn and Rahu, tends towards poison, drugs, anything addictive or harmful to the body.
• Gulika and Mandi. Some scholars and several traditional texts, Uttara Kalamrita among them, treat them as one. Taken as one entity, it is the son of Saturn and shows the sins and misdeeds performed. PVNR: in the other view, one shows what you do to others and the other shows what others do to you.
• Gulika and Mandi in the 1st house: not a good combination. Health problems; toxins in the body.
• The class notes sum it up: the torture one gives and the torture one takes on — what goes around comes around.
• A student asked for a remedy. "Don't do misdeeds." No blanket statement can be given. In general, worship the dispositor, and see whether that lord is a benefic or not: if lagna is Scorpio with Mandi and Gulika in it, pray to Mars or to Subrahmanya. But the trouble can come from any quarter; analyse the whole chart before prescribing.
• Gulika's aspect is also the rasi aspect, and it is permanent. In a chart checked in class, Gulika in Aries aspects a Scorpio lagna.

Moon + Gulika

• Moon aspecting or joining Gulika: receipt of stolen wealth.
• This may not apply to a natal chart but makes sense in prasna: someone asks whether he will get some wealth; if the lagna or Navamsa Lagna has the influence of Moon and Gulika, the answer can be given.

Mercury + Gulika

• Mercury aspecting or joining Gulika: hydrocele and similar diseases of the private parts. Used in medical astrology.

Ketu aspecting or joining Swamsa

• Perforation of the eardrums, or other ear ailments.
• Do not judge on Ketu alone. Look for other malefic influence that fortifies it. The next stanza itself adds that malefics should join or aspect the combination.
• The 3rd house is the ears. The 9th from the 3rd — the 11th — is the dharma of the ears, hearing (Part 10). So: affliction to the 11th house in the rasi chart, together with Ketu aspecting or afflicting the Navamsa Lagna, gives the judgment.

Venus + Ketu

• Venus joining or aspecting Ketu in Swamsa: asceticism and religious leanings. He may be initiated into a religious order.
• Seen in the Pope's chart, and in the student's son's.

Mercury + Saturn + Ketu

• Both Mercury and Saturn joining or aspecting Ketu in Swamsa: impotence. Mercury and Saturn are the eunuch planets.
• Also used in Saptamsa: Mercury, Saturn or Venus in trines to the Saptamsa Lagna — the person is childless.
  • At least two of the three must be there for it to work. Then it is likely.
  • All three: definite.
  • One alone: no.
  • The influence of Rahu or Ketu makes it happen.
  • Trines and rasi aspects, as in the Navamsa.

Mercury + Venus + Ketu

• Both Mercury and Venus aspecting Ketu: a mimic; or a talkative person; or one born to a maidservant or concubine.
• In the discussion it was shortened to "Mercury and Ketu — mimic".
• A student noticed Mercury turning up both here and in the disease of the private parts. PVNR: the same basic combination has the potential for all these things. Look at the other factors, and at the relevant divisional chart, to see where it takes effect.

Tapasvi Yoga — Saturn + Venus + Ketu

• Saturn aspecting Venus and Ketu produces the tapasvi, one who undertakes powerful penances.
• In the Navamsa, by rasi drishti only. A student asked about Saturn's 3rd aspect. No: the graha aspect gives only the desire, no permanent effect.

• Saturn alone aspecting Ketu, without Venus: a fraud. A fraud is one who is not sincere, not passionate about what he does. He will quit any time; he fluctuates and vacillates.
• Pope John Paul II: "not exactly" — see Part 8.

Sun + Venus on Karakamsa

• Sun and Venus aspecting or joining the Karakamsa: a royal assignment is surely indicated. A cabinet minister; a position connected with government.
• Sun gives the initiative. Venus gives the money and the comfort.

The 10th from Swamsa

• Mercury joining or aspecting the 10th from Swamsa gives results like Saturn — success.
• Benefic aspects on the 10th from Swamsa: stable fortunes.
• Malefic aspects: fluctuation.

Sun in the 10th from Karakamsa, aspected by Jupiter

• Translated as a milkman, or one in animal husbandry.
• PVNR called it a very suspicious reading: Karakamsa is the soul, and "milkman" is hardly the desire of a soul.
• The word is gopāla — one who takes care of cows. Go can stand for purity and dharma. So: one who takes care of dharma and purity.
• That fits. Sun and Jupiter are the karakas of the 9th house, and here they are on the 10th, the karma, of the soul.

The class stopped at stanza 1.2.41.

Organ-Dharma Rule (Critical Principle)

PVNR called this a very important point. It came up under Ketu and the ears.

An organ is shown by a house. What the organ does — its dharma — is shown by the 9th from that house.

• The physical eyes are the 2nd house. Vision, the ability to see, is not the 2nd — it is the 10th.
• Malefics in the 11th: the person may have trouble hearing.
• "Like that for every organ."

General Notes on Using These Combinations

PVNR's two cautions

1. This knowledge is partly speculative. Jaimini is a great Maharshi, but he coded his knowledge on purpose, and the decoding done by even great scholars may still be imperfect. Be far more careful with Jaimini than with Parashara.
2. Navamsa is the chart of abilities. Sun, Mars and Rahu on the Navamsa Lagna do not make a man an arsonist. At most there is such an ability. Do not jump to conclusions.

• He also said: see whether a stanza has other applications — prasna and medical astrology. In a prasna the same combinations can be read straight from the planets influencing the lagna of the rasi chart.

Where the knowledge comes from

• A student supposed Jaimini must have built these rules from a collection of charts. Narayana: no. These are Maharshis. Their sign is Pisces, the 12th, the sign of samadhi, and it is in samadhi that they receive this knowledge. It is not research.

How to work with the stanzas

• Do not take every stanza literally. Take those that make sense, test them in charts, and then use them consistently.
• Many sutras still need detailed interpretation. PVNR doubted that all the commentators have explored them fully: "Keep that in mind. Be open-minded."
• Narayana: the first chapters are best understood in discussion, where several meanings can be weighed.
• How to remember some twenty combinations? Only by practice on charts — and by seeing why: Saturn is hard work, Venus is passion, and the rest follows.
