Marriage Timing — Rectification via Annual Chart & Upada

Student Chart: Rectification from the Marriage Year

The Problem

• Given time: 2:34 PM, give or take 20 minutes. Moon in Anuradha.
• This is the data an astrologer normally gets. People do not know their time to the second, and when they do, it is not necessarily right.
• At 2:34 the navamsa lagna is Sagittarius. About 10 minutes later it becomes Capricorn — but the rasi lagna becomes Capricorn at the same moment, and that is already ruled out. So the navamsa lagna is Sagittarius, Scorpio or at most Libra.
• A student noticed the lagna looked vargottama and wanted to switch dasha. Teacher: not yet. The navamsa lagna is not known, so do not build on it.

Step 1 — The Event in Vimshottari

• Married on December 8, 1986.
• Ketu dasha began October 25, 1985. December 1986 is Ketu dasha, Venus antardasha.
• With Sagittarius navamsa lagna:
  • Ketu is in the 11th, a Kama trikona, fulfilment of desires. Some chance.
  • Venus owns the 6th and the 11th. The 6th is the house of brahmacharya, and of separation if one is married. Not conducive to marriage.
• Venus is karaka for marriage, but that alone is not enough.

"Just on account of being karaka, he cannot give marriage. Otherwise everybody should get married in Venus antardasha."

So either the lagna is wrong, or some other dasha works better here. Go to the annual chart, "because in the annual chart things come out more clearly."

Step 2 — Tithi Pravesha of the Marriage Year

Annual chart for the given time: September 10, 1986, 3:55:21 AM. Ruler of the year (Hora lord): Mars. The marriage fell in Mars dasha of the Tithi Ashtottari dasha.

With the given time — TP navamsa lagna Capricorn:

• Mars owns the 4th and the 11th. He is in the 10th with lagna lord Saturn and 8th lord Sun.
• A student pointed out that Mars is in the Upada of the navamsa and is with the lagna lord.
• But Mars and Saturn are not friends, so why would Mars give the result on Saturn's behalf?
• Forget the dasha and ask first whether the year shows marriage at all. Lagna lord Saturn is with enemies and the 8th lord. 7th lord Moon is in the 8th. No marriage seen in the year.

Birth time moved back 12 minutes, to 2:22 PM — TP navamsa lagna Sagittarius:

• 7th lord Mercury is in lagna.
• Objection from the class: he is with Venus, the 6th lord. Answer: Jupiter and Venus have a parivartana (Venus in Sagittarius, Jupiter in Taurus). Venus acts as Jupiter. So the lagna holds the lagna lord and the 7th lord.

"If lagna lord and 7th lord are together, it's auspicious, especially if they are conjoining in the 7th house or lagna itself. It shows either having good relations, being brought close, or just getting married, just starting the new marital life."

• Upada in the rasi chart of the year has Venus, the karaka of marriage — the same Venus who makes the parivartana.
• Upada in the navamsa of the year has Ketu.
• Lagna is blessed by Mercury, Venus and Jupiter — all three natural benefics.
• Marriage is clearly seen in the year.

Timing Inside the Year

• It happened in Mars dasha. Mars is the ruler of the year, and he is in the 2nd from Upada in the navamsa.
• Jupiter dasha, Mercury dasha and Mars dasha were all candidates. Mars gave it. The finer timing was left for a later class.
• Even if the dasha lord is not a perfect candidate, the ruler of the year can give what the year strongly promises.
• Mercury dasha, December 16 to February 10: the 7th lord coming to lagna is the wife coming to the native. Coming close and building the relationship belongs to this period.

"7th house is the house of relationship, not the formal getting married. Formal getting married is from Upada."

"The 7th lord need not give the marriage. But unless the 7th lord is strong and taking part in yogas, marriage is not likely in that year."

Step 3 — Back to the Natal Navamsa

With 2:22 PM the natal navamsa lagna moves from Sagittarius to Scorpio. The rasi lagna stays Sagittarius.

Now Ketu–Venus makes sense:

• Ketu is co-lord of Scorpio, so he is a lagna lord. He is in the 12th with Moon, the 9th lord. Lagna lord and 9th lord conjoined in navamsa is a good yoga — lagna is one's whole existence, the 9th is dharma. Being lagna lord, he can give marriage.
• Venus is the 7th lord, exalted (in Pisces), and the dispositor of the Ketu–Moon yoga. An exalted 7th lord in navamsa is fully qualified to give marriage in his antardasha.

Window Left

• The time cannot be later than 2:22: any later and the TP navamsa lagna goes back to Capricorn.
• In the natal navamsa, 4 minutes 14 seconds earlier makes the lagna Libra. With Libra, Venus is lagna lord in the 6th, his marana karaka sthana. Ketu–Venus would not give marriage.
• So the navamsa lagna is Scorpio, and at most about 4 minutes can still be subtracted.

Venus in Upada and Ketu in Upada

Upada needs strength to get the person married. In the annual chart of the marriage year it has both karakas.

"If somebody gets married just because one has to get married and have children in order to increase the lineage, then Ketu is the karaka for that kind of marriage. Especially if you are looking at an arranged marriage or traditional marriage or marriage with the support of elders, Ketu is probably more important than Venus."

• Navamsa is the chart of dharma: Ketu is in Upada there. The dharmic purpose of the marriage is the lineage.
• Rasi is the chart of physical existence: Venus is in Upada there. So the marriage is not without love or romance.

"Upada is blessed by both Venus and Ketu in Rasi and Navamsa charts, and lagna is blessed by Mercury and Venus and Jupiter."

Annual Chart First, Then Vimshottari

• With Vimshottari the perfect candidate's dasha and antardasha do not always give the event. Timing by Vimshottari alone, you push the time back for the marriage, forward for the job, and go in circles.
• A marriage shows strongly in the navamsa of that year's Tithi Pravesha. A job shows strongly in its dasamsa. This holds even where the Tithi Ashtottari dasha is not perfect.

"If you give a lot of importance to the Tithi Pravesha chart, the annual charts, you cannot go wrong. And then reconcile with the Vimshottari dasha. In the case of annual charts, the reconciliation needed is very minimal."

• Pick the charts by the events given. Keep track of the plus and minus window at every step; then the final window of certainty is known.
