Case Study 1 — Engineer, Will the Contract Continue?

The Question

• Out of work since April 12, 2011.
• Got a contract job on October 16, 2012. Five weeks in at the time of the class.
• He was told three months, but the paper does not say so. He was hired to write a proposal, which ends in the middle of January. They can let him go as soon as the work is done.
• Question: will this be prolonged?

Rāśi Chart — Saturn Daśā, Ketu and Venus Antardaśās

• Vimśottarī: Saturn daśā running since 2005.
• The break came towards the end of Saturn–Mercury. The period of unemployment was Saturn–Ketu. Ketu antardaśā ended at the end of June or in July 2012. A couple of months after Venus antardaśā started, he found work.
• The 10th house of career is Aries. Count from Aries:
  • Ketu is the 8th lord (Scorpio). Problems and setbacks in work in the Ketu period.
  • Venus is the 7th lord, conjoining the lagna lord Mars (both in Cancer). Lagna lord with 7th lord is a good yoga — except that Mars and Venus are not friends.
• So Venus is probably a better period than Ketu. The D-10 decides.

D-10 — Saturn Mahādaśā

• D-10 lagna Virgo.
• Saturn owns the 5th and the 6th. A neutral planet.
• He is exalted in the 2nd house of resources (Libra), with the lagna lord Mercury.
• Lagna lord with 6th lord is not a good yoga. Lagna lord with 5th lord is a good yoga. Saturn is both.
• Nothing here shows a big fall, a big setback or the career ending.
• Seven years of the daśā are gone, twelve remain.

"From a long-term perspective, these 19 years don't seem to me like the period when the career will end."

D-10 — Ketu Antardaśā: the Break

• From lagna, Ketu is the 3rd lord (Scorpio). The 3rd shows temporary breaks, vacations.
• With true nodes he sits in Gemini, the 10th house of work. 3rd lord in the 10th gives breaks in work.
• Take the 10th house itself as lagna — Gemini as lagna — to see how the work goes. Ketu is then the 6th lord in lagna. A dusthāna lord occupying lagna: obstructions, fighting obstacles.
• Had he been in the 12th from the 10th (which is where mean nodes put him), 6th lord in the 12th would not have been a bad placement.
• So for the person, Ketu gives a break from work. For the career, he gives struggle to find work.
• The site's live chart of this native is cast with mean nodes and shows Ketu in Taurus. The class reads him in Gemini.

D-10 — Venus Antardaśā: the Contract

• Venus is the 2nd and 9th lord in the 9th house (Taurus). 9th lord in the 9th. A very good planet.
• He is the dispositor of Saturn and Mercury — the dispositor of the Raj Yoga, and he is in his own house.
• Why a contract job? There has to be a link with the 3rd house. The 3rd is the house of breaks, and also of contract work. Venus aspects the 3rd (graha dṛṣṭi, the 7th aspect from Taurus on Scorpio). A planet aspecting the 3rd can give contract work.
• A student objects: Venus is in the 12th from the 10th. The teacher: from the 10th house as lagna, Venus is the 5th and 12th lord in the 12th. 12th lord in the 12th is a good combination.
• Will he work a short contract and then sit idle for years again? Check Venus's links: the 8th (big obstacle, long break), the 6th (obstacles), the 3rd as a house of break. Venus has none of these negative connections.
• Venus antardaśā runs till mid-2015 — more than three years in all.

The reading:

• Vimśottarī cannot be very specific. This job may end and another be found in three or four months. On the scale of Vimśottarī that is no big deal.
• The teacher's feeling: this contract will become permanent or be extended.
• Even if there is a gap, it will be a couple of months, not a year and a half or two years. Contracts do well in this period because Venus is in the 9th and aspects the 3rd.

"This antardasha of Venus of more than 3 years is likely to be a much better period in career than the last 1.5 years. So this should give continued employment or almost continuous employment."

Which House — Count from the Lagna Longitude

• A student checks the divisional longitudes: is Venus in the 8th or the 9th house?
• Houses are counted from the lagna's longitude, not from 0° of the sign. Lagna longitude plus or minus 15° is one house.
• D-10 lagna is 25° Virgo. Venus is at about 18° Taurus. The 9th house runs from 10° Taurus to 10° Gemini. Venus is in the 9th.
• "It's a good idea to check."

Deity

• A student asks the best deity to propitiate.
• In the D-10, Saturn and Mercury give a Raj Yoga in the 2nd house of wealth. Mercury is the lagna lord and the 10th lord.
• For these two reasons: Viṣṇu. Viṣṇu Sahasranāma — the same advice as last time.

Tithi Praveśa 2012 — the Year and Its Daśās

The Vimśottarī reading covers three years. He wants to know about this one job. For that the teacher opens the Tithi Praveśa chart for 2012.

Judging the Tithi Praveśa Year — Ruler and Lagna

• TP rāśi lagna: Libra. Exalted Saturn, the yogakāraka, is in lagna.
• Ruler of the year: Mercury. He is the 9th lord in the 10th house (Cancer), with the 11th lord Sun.
• Natal lagna is Cancer. The TP lagna Libra is the 4th from it — a kendra. If the natal lagna and the TP lagna are in dusthāna placement (6th, 8th, 12th) from one another, that year can show setbacks. Here they are in quadrants.
• The 10th house itself is strong. The 12th lord is also reasonably placed, in a quadrant.

"Without going into the Dasamsa, just looking at the Rasi and the ruler of the year, this should be a good year, a good year for career, some fortune in career for sure."

The Daśā When the Job Came — Rāhu

• The job came on October 16, in Rāhu's period of the TP year.
• TP rāśi: Rāhu is the 5th lord (Aquarius) in the 2nd house. Good for career.
• TP D-10: lagna Libra, with Sun and Saturn in it. Rāhu, the 5th lord, is with the 10th lord Moon — a Raj Yoga. But they are in the 12th house.
• The 12th can give long travel, displacement — finding a job with a displacement, or a job where some compromise is needed. The native confirms: he has to travel a fair distance to get there.

Venus Period — till February 11

• If the contract were terminated in January, it would be in this period.
• Venus is the lagna lord and the 8th lord. In the TP rāśi he is in the 9th. Not bad.
• In the TP D-10 he is in the 11th house by longitude.
• He is the 8th lord of ending and also the lagna lord of starting. Lagna is stronger than the 8th house.
• Lagna lord in the 11th is unlikely to give a break or a setback. The 11th is the house of gains and fulfilment of desires. He can give good news, some financial gain.

"The contract being extended is much more than the contract being terminated during this period."

Sun Period — February 11 to March 4

• Sun is the 11th lord in lagna in the TP D-10. Good, but he is debilitated, with Saturn, and in lagna.
• Sun–Saturn and Sun–Rāhu combinations show political problems.
• A weak or afflicted Sun in D-10 shows one of two things: politics at the workplace, or a problem with the boss.
• The good news: Sun and Saturn are more than 16° apart in the D-10. It will probably be all right. Still, a debilitated Sun in lagna gives some tension.
• Advice: steer clear of controversy, play no politics, keep a good equation with the boss.

"This is not the time to fight with your boss, bottom line."

Moon Period — March–April

• Moon is the 10th lord in the 12th house of the TP D-10. Not a good combination. And he is afflicted by Rāhu.
• From the 10th house (Cancer) as lagna: Rāhu is the 8th lord in the 3rd — a good placement for the 8th lord. But Moon is the lagna lord in the 3rd — taking a break.
• Of the two, the afflicted one is Moon.

"Rahu is happy that he got a chance to beat up Moon, whereas Moon is not so happy being beaten up by Rahu there."

• The teacher does not think the job ends in December or January. In the Moon period there is a chance of a break or setback — or, if not a break, mental tension and anxiety. Be careful in March–April.

Verdict

• D-10, rāśi and the Tithi Praveśa chart together: a better year for career than the previous two.
• Expectation: the job continues, with some tension a few months later.
