Conditional Dashas — Complete Taxonomy & Chart Rectification Methodology
Complete taxonomy of all conditional nakshatra dashas that Parashara mentions: priority rules — rarest dasha first, then longest dasha. Vimshottari is important in Kali Yuga but not universal. Chart rectification methodology using the student's own chart: find the divisional chart with lagna closest to a sign border, test each possible lagna against known events via Vimshottari and Narayana Dasha. Bhoga Formula applied to astrology learning: how to find which dasha period actually delivered the knowledge.
"The highest priority should be to the rarest dasha, and the second highest priority should be to the longest dasha."

Conditional Dashas — Complete Taxonomy and Priority Rules
This lesson opens with a comprehensive discussion of ALL conditional nakshatra-based dashas that Parashara mentions, since the class must first decide whether Vimshottari applies to this chart or if a conditional dasha takes precedence.
The Fundamental Question About Vimshottari
PVNR makes a strong point about Parashara's actual teaching:
— PVNR"Parashara said that Vimshottari is a very important dasha in Kali Yuga. He did not say it applies to everybody or it gives perfect results for everybody."
This is a critical distinction. Parashara prescribed specific conditional dashas for specific conditions. When PVNR applies a conditional dasha in a chart where its condition is met, Vimshottari often doesn't work as well. His conclusion: if a conditional dasha applies, it may be legitimate to replace Vimshottari entirely with that conditional dasha.
— PVNR"In my experience, when I see Vimshottari Dasha being applied in a chart where one of these dashas applies, I don't see Vimshottari working so well."
All Conditional Nakshatra Dashas
| Dasha Name | Condition | Probability | Priority |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dwisaptatisamadasha (72yr) | 7th lord in lagna OR lagna lord in 7th | ~1/6 (2/12) | HIGH |
| Dwadasottari Dasha | Lagna in Navamsa (D9) of Venus — i.e., Navamsa lagna in Taurus or Libra | 1/6 (2/12) | HIGH |
| Chaturaseethi Sama Dasha | 10th lord in the 10th house | Rare | HIGH |
| Saatabdika Dasha | Lagna is vargottama (same sign in D1 and D9) | ~1/12 | HIGH |
| Shodasottari Dasha (116yr) | Lagna in Moon's Hora in Krishna Paksha OR lagna in Sun's Hora in Shukla Paksha | ~50% | HIGH if applicable (long cycle) |
| Panchottari Dasha | Lagna in Cancer in BOTH D1 (Rasi) AND D12 (Dvadasamsa) | 1/144 | EXTREMELY HIGH (very rare) |
| Shastihayani Dasha | Sun in lagna (conjunction with lagna at birth) | ~1/4 | HIGH |
| Shatrimshasamadasha (36yr) | Daytime birth in Sun's Hora OR Nighttime birth in Moon's Hora | ~50% | LOW (too common) |
Priority Rules for Choosing Dashas
- Highest priority: RAREST dasha — The rarest applicable conditional dasha takes maximum precedence
- Second priority: LONGEST cycle — A 116-year dasha is more complete and precise than a 36-year one
- Lowest priority: Very common dashas — Those applying to ~50% of charts don't deserve special priority; Vimshottari works just as well
— PVNR"The highest priority should be to the rarest dasha, and the second highest priority should be to the longest dasha."
Panchottari Dasha: Lagna in Cancer in both Rasi AND Dvadasamsa = probability 1/12 × 1/12 = 1/144. Extraordinarily rare.
— PVNR"If you see this dasha applying in any chart, jump to this dasha. Use this dasha. This dasha will decide their life."
The Hora for Dasha Conditions
This is NOT the D2 Hora chart. This Hora refers to the first half or second half of the LAGNA sign:
- Odd signs (Aries, Gemini, Leo, etc.): First 15° = Sun's Hora; Second 15° = Moon's Hora
- Even signs (Taurus, Cancer, Virgo, etc.): First 15° = Moon's Hora; Second 15° = Sun's Hora
In the student's chart: Lagna is at 16° Aries (odd sign, past 15° boundary) = Moon's Hora. Born after sunset = nighttime. Amavasya (Krishna Paksha). So:
- Shatrimshasamadasha condition: Nighttime + Moon's Hora = applies. BUT it's a 50% dasha, so low priority.
- Shodasottari condition: Moon's Hora + Krishna Paksha = applies. Long 116-year cycle → higher priority.
Are Conditional Dashas for All Events or Specific Areas?
PVNR presents two schools of thought:
- Full replacement view: The conditional dasha completely replaces Vimshottari for ALL life events
- Focus view: The conditional dasha is most focused on specific life areas (e.g., Sun-in-lagna dasha = best for dharmic events) but can show everything
PVNR's practice: He and Sanjayji use conditional dashas as full replacements when they apply, but acknowledge there is a clear thematic focus. The proof is in seeing events confirm or deny the dasha.
Basis of Conditional Dashas
A student asks about the mathematical/astronomical basis for these dashas. PVNR's answer:
- He knows the basis for a few; doesn't fully know all of them
- There are astronomical synodic cycles linking planet periodicities that form the basis for dasha lengths
- Puranic stories also allude to these astronomical cycles
- Nothing in the cosmos is arbitrary; there is always a rationale
Chart Rectification Methodology
The student had narrowed his birth time to 6:31 PM using personal research. The rectification proceeds by cross-referencing multiple varga charts.
Step 1 — Rasi Lagna
The period 6:15 PM to 7:05 PM gives only one Rasi lagna: Aries. No ambiguity here.
Step 2 — Navamsa Lagna Possibilities
In the birth time window, the Navamsa lagna changes multiple times:
- Leo: possible if birth was ~6:15-6:30
- Virgo: possible if birth was ~6:30-6:42 (the student's chosen time)
- Libra: possible if birth was ~6:41-6:50
- Scorpio: possible after that
So four Navamsa lagnas are tested. The test: which one explains the marriage most naturally?
Step 3 — Testing with Known Events
Event: Marriage on August 31, 1997 (Jupiter Dasha, Ketu Antardasha)
With Virgo Navamsa Lagna:
- Jupiter = 4L and 7L in Navamsa, placed in 5H (house of love, affection)
- Jupiter has Parivartana with Saturn (9L and 10L) → as if Jupiter is in 7H itself
- Jupiter = also the Darakaraka (person with fewest degrees = marker for spouse)
- Ketu = 9L in the 9th house of Navamsa = dharma, traditional marriage
- Bhoga of Ketu Antardasha: Count from Jupiter to Ketu = 11th house. Count 11 from Ketu = Virgo = Lagna = new beginning → marriage as a new beginning in dharmic life ✓
The accident at marriage: Jupiter in 6H in Rasi (accidents/diseases) + Jupiter in 8H in Navamsa (obstacles in dharmic beginning) → vehicular accident, uncertainty about reaching in time → confirmed ✓
Eliminating other Navamsas:
- Taurus Navamsa lagna: Jupiter becomes something else → marriage doesn't fit well
- Aquarius Navamsa: Possible but not a strong candidate
- Virgo is clearly the best fit
Step 4 — Dasamsa (D-10) Leeway
The Dasamsa lagna changes 6.5 minutes earlier or 4 minutes later from the chosen time. Combined with Navamsa constraints (38 seconds backward, 9 minutes forward), the window is:
- Maximum backward: ~38 seconds
- Maximum forward: ~9 minutes
- Remaining Dasamsa possibilities: Virgo or Libra lagna (both still explain career events)
Marriage Analysis in Navamsa — Philosophy
PVNR explains why Jupiter-Ketu gives a traditional marriage:
— PVNR"Jupiter and Ketu are both traditional planets. Whatever marriage they give will be a traditional marriage — one that happens with the blessings of elders. This is not falling in love, running away from home, and getting married. This is a very traditional marriage."
The 8th house placement of Jupiter and Ketu in Navamsa shows that there IS some anxiety about the marriage process (the vehicular accident that nearly prevented the marriage party from arriving). But the lagna lordship of Jupiter shows that his agenda is to give a fresh start — Jupiter WILL give the marriage, just with some difficulties.
PVNR makes a distinction: Looking at 6H in Rasi gives you physical problems (accidents, illness), and looking at 8H in Navamsa gives you dharmic obstacles (anxiety, tension in fulfilling dharma of marriage).
Bhoga Formula — Astrology Learning
The student is running Jupiter Dasha, Rahu Antardasha in 2004. Why is he learning astrology so intensely?
Applying Bhoga formula:
- Dasha lord = Jupiter (in Leo)
- Antardasha lord = Rahu (in Gemini)
- Count from Jupiter to Rahu = 11th house (Gemini is 11th from Leo)
- Count 11 houses from Rahu (Gemini) = Aries = 1H from Lagna? Wait, 11th from Gemini = Aries
Actually: 11 from Gemini:
- Gemini (1), Cancer (2), Leo (3), Virgo (4), Libra (5), Scorpio (6), Sagittarius (7), Capricorn (8), Aquarius (9), Pisces (10), Aries (11)
From the Lagna: Aries = Lagna = 1st house. But from the original lagna (Aries itself), Aries = 1st house? No — the bhoga house from Lagna. Aries is the 1st house / lagna of this chart.
PVNR says: "The bhoga falls in the 8th house from Lagna (Aries is 8H? No...)."
Wait, let me recalculate. Lagna = Aries. Jupiter is in Leo (5H). Rahu is in Gemini (3H from Lagna, 11H from Jupiter).
Count 11 from Rahu (Gemini): Gemini→Aries is backwards. Counting forward 11: Gemini+11 = Aries. But Aries is the 1st house from Lagna.
Wait, PVNR says "8th house." From the transcript: "From Ju, Rahu is in the 11th house (Paka). From Rahu, 11th house is Ar (Bhoga). 8th house is occult knowledge."
So Aries is the 8th house? Wait — the Lagna is Aries. How can Aries be the 8th house? Unless the Siddhamsa (D24) has a different lagna, and from the D24 lagna, Aries is in 8H.
The Book 1 notes say: "In D24, ASC is some sign; Aries is 8H from ASC." This must be analyzed in the Siddhamsa (D24), not the Rasi chart. In the Siddhamsa, the lagna appears to be in a sign where Aries = 8H (which would make the Siddhamsa lagna Virgo).
The principle: 8th house in any divisional chart = occult, hidden knowledge. In the D24 (chart of learning), 8H = occult/astrological knowledge. The Bhoga falling there means: during Jupiter-Rahu, his experiences are directed toward occult and astrological knowledge. That is why he is learning astrology so deeply right now.
