Business Partnership Chart (1971) — A7 in 10H of the Dasamsa, Mars Connecting All Kama Trikonas, Sun AD in Mercury MD & Shatabdika Dasha

Rasi lagna: Leo 16½°, Purva Phalguni 1st pada. Navamsa lagna is also Leo: the lagna is vargottama.
Dasamsa (D-10) lagna: Capricorn. Nearly all of the career reading below is done in the Dasamsa, with houses counted from Capricorn.
Class date: mid-July 2007.

A student brought the chart. The native is a chartered accountant, doing well.

His questions:

1. A new business opportunity has come, in partnership with someone. Should he go ahead? How far can he trust the man?
2. He has run his practice for 12–13 years with another partner, under one name. That partner now wants to leave for other work; they have been negotiating for a year. Is the parting good for him or not?

The teacher remarks that a 7th-house question has come up on the day the class reads the 7th-house chapter.

(This reading takes the time as given. A later class, Lesson 120, moves the birth time about seven minutes earlier, which changes the Dasamsa lagna to Sagittarius.)

Which Dasha: Vimshottari and Shatabdika

• The class notes from an earlier look at this chart say Shatabdika dasha. Its condition is a vargottama lagna: here Leo in both Rasi and Navamsa.
• Vimshottari (the student's working): Mercury mahadasha 2001–2018; Sun antardasha is about to start.
• Shatabdika: he has been "stuck in Saturn–Saturn for a long time". The Sun pratyantardasha runs August 2007 – February 2008.
• Both nakshatra dashas bring the Sun in at the same time, give or take a couple of weeks. From this summer to next spring some result of the Sun has to come. So the question becomes: what does the Sun give?

The student's reading: the 7th lord and the 8th lord are together in the 10th house — an affliction to partnership in the house of karma. The 8th lord is debilitated, which is the one good point. His advice to the native: partnerships cannot be avoided in this business, so go ahead, but think twice before investing.

The Dasamsa: a Businessman's Chart

D-10, Capricorn lagna:

• A7 and the 7th lord both in the 10th: he will be involved in many partnerships. They are in a sign of Venus: lucky in career.
• A student notes the native has made big money from the business.
• Venus in lagna aspects the 7th house.
• (The transcript also has "Ketu is in lagna". The cast Dasamsa has Ketu in Leo, the 8th. Unresolved.)

Karakas of business:

• Mars — fire. Entrepreneurship needs fire: the wish to do something, to make more money, to excel.
• Venus — water. Balancing, diplomacy, partnerships.
• Mercury — career in general, and being multifaceted.

Mars connects the three kama trikonas:

• 3rd: A3 is the tangible form of initiative — starting a company, registering it. A3 is in the 11th and Mars is its lord.
• 11th: Mars is the 11th lord, the house of gains and fulfilment of desire.
• 7th: Mars sits in the 7th.

"Whenever you see a planet connecting various artha trikonas or various kama trikonas, he becomes a key planet for that trikona."

A student objects that Mars is debilitated. The teacher: it does make him weak, but he still ties the kama trikonas together and has a good chance of giving business.

"This is not a chart of somebody who works 9 to 5 every day and makes his livelihood. This is a chart of a businessman, somebody who takes initiative."

Is the Sun Good or Bad Here?

A student calls the Sun a functional malefic because he is the 8th lord. The teacher applies Parashara's classification (table in Part 2):

• Sun owns only the 8th → neutral. Not a functional malefic.
• Moon — birth is on Shukla Navami, so Moon is a natural benefic. A natural benefic owning the 7th, a kendra → functional malefic.
• So of the two planets in the 10th, the Moon is the functional malefic and the Sun is the neutral one.

What the 8th lord can show in career: setbacks, or gambling and risk-taking; and sudden change — losing a partner, getting a new one, changing the line of work (serving individuals until now, businesses from now on), or sudden political links.

Kubera amsa: the Sun is in Kubera amsa of the Dasamsa — money-mindedness, working for money and getting it. Lagna lord Saturn is in Kubera amsa too. Two key planets there.

Sun and the project manager of business:

• Sun and Moon occupy A7, so they give a business partnership.
• Mars is the karaka of partnership and business. The Sun is an adhimitra of Mars, and so is the Moon. Sitting in the arudha of a house Mars signifies, they cooperate fully with Mars.
• Both Sun and Moon periods are conducive to partnership. The Sun, as 8th lord, adds sudden change.

Sudden change for good or for bad? The 8th house is like a group that does two kinds of work.

• Bad suddenness — karakas Rahu, Ketu, Mars. Rahu aspects the Sun by rāśi dṛṣṭi (Aquarius to Libra). Rahu's agenda is cheating in the career, a big setback, worry. But the Sun is no friend of Rahu, and Rahu is a temporary enemy too: an adhishatru. "They don't see eye to eye." The Sun need not serve Rahu's agenda.
• Fortune — karaka Jupiter (fortune and blessings from past lives), and the 9th lord Mercury.
  • Jupiter is a natural friend of the Sun and a temporary friend in this chart: an adhimitra.
  • Mercury, the 9th lord, is treated by the Sun as a friend and is a temporary friend, being two signs away.
  • The Sun in the 10th has argala on the 9th house (the 10th is the 2nd from the 9th).
  • A9, the tangible fortune, is in Sagittarius with A8 (suddenness) and the 9th lord Mercury. The Sun in Libra has the 11th-house argala — the argala of fulfilment — on that sign.

"He doesn't like this project manager. He likes the other project manager."

Verdict from the natal chart: instead of cheating, the Sun gives a fortunate, sudden development in the career.

• The partnership that is breaking is for good.
• The partnership that is coming is also for good.
• Do not jump in now. Wait until the Sun antardasha (Vimshottari) or pratyantardasha (Shatabdika) has fully set in — August.

Tithi Pravesha — Fine-Tuning the Months

The natal dashas give a window from August to the following spring. To say which month, the teacher goes to the annual chart. Transits or the annual chart are more reliable for this than going down to sookshma and prana dashas.

He raises the birth-time doubt first: the lagna has a margin of 2 minutes 14 seconds. The class assumes the lagna is right.

The Running Year (29 November 2006 – November 2007)

Hora lord: Mercury — the ruler of the year.

Dasamsa of the year (Pisces lagna):

• The Tithi Pravesha dasha running on the day of the class is Jupiter's. Jupiter is the lagna lord in the 7th: that is why the native is preoccupied with partnership this year.
• A7 is in the 11th (Capricorn). Jupiter aspects it (5th graha aspect) and stands in the 9th from it, as lagna lord — a functional benefic. Gain through partnership this year.
• Arudha Lagna is in Sagittarius. Jupiter owns it and sits in the 10th from it: "a very auspicious image, the image of a very noble person."
• Mercury, 4th and 7th lord, is in the 3rd house of initiative with Ketu, the 9th lord (Scorpio). Raja yoga, in a friendly sign: a raja yoga through a new initiative touching the 4th or 7th house.
• UL is in that 3rd house. UL is the arudha of the 12th — letting go. With the 7th lord in it: an investment, or letting a partner go. Some change either way.
• Mercury is the lord of one kama trikona placed in another, in raja yoga, and aspected by Jupiter. Auspicious.

Rasi of the year (Pisces lagna):

• Mercury, 7th lord, is in the 8th (Libra). "A very bad combination": physically a year of labour, hard work and anxiety, though the professional side is good.
• From the Moon (Aquarius, in the 12th house, with Rahu within a degree): Rahu in the Moon's lagna, strong in his own sign — mental tension. Mercury is the 5th and 8th lord from the Moon and sits in Libra, the badhakasthana from Aquarius.
• Rule: any link of a dusthana with the badhakasthana is very bad. The badhakasthana is bad by itself; with the 6th or 8th lord in it, worse.
• The 9th house (Scorpio) holds Sun 13°, Mars 1°, Jupiter 7°, Venus 21°. A student says the strong 9th compensates. The teacher agrees: he also feels blessed and lucky. But A6 and UL are in the 9th, and Venus (3rd and 8th lord) and Sun (6th lord), both functional malefics for Pisces, afflict lagna lord Jupiter and Mars there. Jupiter and Mars are close together — Guru-Mangala yoga, the blessing.
• A7 is in the 9th: he moves with dharmic or fortunate people.

"Physically he will work hard, mentally he is under tremendous stress during this year, but professionally I think this particular period is a good period."

The remaining Tithi Pravesha dashas of the year (read in the Dasamsa):

• The native has a sudden opportunity to visit Singapore in a few days. He should go: in the Rasi of the year Rahu is in the 12th, is the 12th lord and is the karaka of foreign travel — "group manager, project manager, group member, everything."
• A student asks whether Rahu in the 12th means losses. For losses in career look at the Dasamsa, not the Rasi. In the Rasi a 12th-house planet can be an injury to the foot, poor sleep, anxiety.
• A student notes that this contradicts the natal reading. It does not: the natal window was August to next spring. The annual chart says which part of it.

The Next Year (from 19 November 2007)

Hora lord: Saturn. The Tithi Pravesha dashas run Sun, then Moon, then Mars. The Sun's dasha is the first six days.

Dasamsa of the year (Sagittarius lagna):

• Sun is the 9th lord — a functional benefic whose agenda is fortune — in the 8th with the Moon: a sudden fortunate development.
• A student objects that he is in the 12th from the 9th, letting a fortune go. The teacher: it can be that, or a compromise now for a later fortune. His agenda remains the 9th house.
• Arudha Lagna and A5 are together in the 9th house (Leo). AL with A5 is like the lagna lord with the 5th lord, and more material: the tangible image and the tangible fame agree.
• Rule: when a planet giving a key result in the natal chart takes part in a similar yoga in the Tithi Pravesha chart, the result is accentuated. In the natal Dasamsa the Sun was the 8th lord with the Moon in A7. Here Sun and Moon join again, again with an 8th-house link — risk-taking.

Rasi of the year (Scorpio lagna): Sun is the 10th lord, the controller of career, in lagna with the 5th lord Jupiter. A10, the Rajyapada, is in lagna.

Advice: work out the details and finish the paperwork beforehand, and sign the partnership between 19 and 25 November 2007, in the Sun's dasha of the new year. An informal agreement may come earlier.

Saturn's Transit and the Health Warning

A student adds a point from transit: Saturn entered Leo the day before the class, and the native has Leo lagna. He told the native to take care of his health, especially the stomach. The teacher: a good thing to check, but "too specific".

Why Saturn Is the Planet to Watch (Rasi Chart, Leo Lagna)

• Saturn is the 6th lord of disease and the general karaka of disease. From the 10th house (Taurus) he aspects the lagna by his partial aspect on the 4th house from himself.
• He aspects the lagna lord: Saturn is at 9½° Taurus, Sun at 10½° Scorpio. Within one degree. Sun is the karaka of vitality and the lagna lord; Saturn the karaka of disease and the 6th lord. Opposite poles.
• Protection: Jupiter, though 8th lord, is also the 5th lord and is with the lagna lord.
• He has been in Saturn dasha, Saturn antardasha of Shatabdika for a long time.
• Mandi and Gulika, the sons of Saturn who advance his agenda, are in lagna.
• Now is not too bad. The risk is when Saturn crosses the degree of the lagna (16° Leo), of Mandi or of Gulika. He will also aspect the Moon sign from Leo. Some health worry in the next two or three years.

Which Part of the Body

A rule the teacher quotes from a classic:

• Trouble from the 8th lord → look at the sign he occupies, as a sign of the natural zodiac. 8th lord in Leo: digestive problems.
• Trouble from the 6th lord → look at the house he occupies.

Here the worry is the 6th lord Saturn. He is in the 10th house: knees. So the leg area, not the stomach.

"Never say just knees, because you are pushing yourself into a corner. Say legs."

To be more specific you would need the nakshatras, "and the shastra is not perfect."

Which Year

2009–10 (Sagittarius lagna, 28°):

• Gulika and Mandi rise in a fiery lagna again, as in the natal chart. A natal combination that returns in the annual chart can trigger its bad result.
• The nodal axis is on the lagna. Rahu is at 29½° Sagittarius, the lagna at 28° — about to rise.
• Saturn is in a kendra (the 10th), with A8, the Mrityupada — tangible suffering.
• A6 and UL are in another kendra (the 4th, Pisces), under Saturn's rāśi dṛṣṭi. The arudhas in kendras are exactly the three dusthana arudhas: A6, A8, UL.
• Three natural malefics — Rahu, Ketu, Saturn — are in kendras: Sarpa yoga, "a very terrible" one.
• Hora lord Venus is the 6th and 11th lord in the 11th: a functional malefic. When the ruler of the year owns the 6th, it shows disease.
• Shashthamsa (D-6) of the year: the ruler of the year is debilitated in lagna (Venus in Virgo), with Mandi; the nodes are on the lagna; lagna lord Mercury is in the 6th with the 8th lord Mars.

Natal dashas for that year: Vimshottari Mercury–Mars; Shatabdika Saturn dasha with Mercury or Jupiter antardasha. Mars is the badhaka lord for Leo and is with the Moon, lord of the Mrityupada (A8), but it "doesn't look terrible".

Reconciling a Terrible Annual Chart with Mild Dashas

"The natal chart basically sets the basis, and Tithi Pravesha is a fluctuation over that basis."

• If the dashas show no great suffering, it will not be a long illness of years. A cancer, or a disease fought over years, must show in the natal dashas as a terrible period.
• Within the year there can be one big event — an accident, a month in hospital. It will stand out in that year; looked at ten years later it will not.
• "Certain events stand out from the point of view of whole life. Certain events stand out from the point of view of a particular year."

The student reports that the native is healthy at present. The teacher: he has the blessing of Jupiter.

Remedies and the Devatas of the Navamsa

For Health

• Tell him 2009–10 can be a bad year for health.
• Mahamrityunjaya (Tryambaka) mantra, one mala every day. Start before the year, from 2008 or the start of 2009, "and build the ground".
• Rahu is in lagna in both the Rasi and the Shashthamsa of that year: pray to Durga — Durga Suktam, Durga Saptashloki, or the Saptashati if he has the time.
• In 2009, Rudra japa or Mahamrityunjaya, or a homa at home, because Rahu is in lagna.
• The combination is bad enough that some negative result will come all the same. Or the remedy is why the natal chart shows nothing severe.

For the Partnership

The student had already advised Aditya Hridayam, because of the Sun. The teacher confirms it by another route.

• Palana devata: the 6th from the Amatyakaraka in the Navamsa. AmK is Jupiter; the 6th from him is Gemini, lord Mercury → Vishnu, or Lalita Tripurasundari.
• For a businessman the 7th from the Darakaraka matters more. The Darakaraka shows the souls you associate with. The 7th from him in the Navamsa shows the devata who protects all dealings — wife or partners.
• Darakaraka is Mercury, in Aries in the Navamsa. The 7th from him is Libra, and the Sun is there. So Aditya Hridayam is right for partnership too: it keeps him in contact with souls that are conducive to him.
• For the Sun one can also worship Sri Rama among the avataras of Vishnu. But the Sun is debilitated in Libra: a debilitated planet shows a female deity, an exalted planet a male deity. The female deity for the Sun is Matangi. Initiation into a Matangi or Raja Matangi mantra would be a very auspicious sadhana for his career and business.
• Take the occupant of the house; if there is none, the lord.

Why the Navamsa: it is the chart of dharma and of protection from God. For devatas use the chara karaka and the relevant house from him in the Navamsa.

• For a large following: the 5th from the Putrakaraka. PK here is Saturn; the 5th from him is Cancer → worship a deity of the Moon. (Saturn is the naisargika karaka of fame, but for devatas go by the chara karaka.)

For the welfare of children (a student's question): go to the Saptamsa.

• For one child, take the lagna that stands for that child in the Saptamsa and propitiate its lagna lord or 9th lord. The 9th lord is the general protector.
• For happiness from children in general, worship the lagna lord of the Saptamsa. The lagna of every divisional chart is you, from that chart's point of view.
• Make one sankalpa. "If you ask too many things to gods, they will get confused." Ask for putra-saukhyam and stop.

Why Remedies Often Fail

• Some remedies work fast and some do not; it depends on the karma that blocks the result.
• Heavy karma needs heavy sadhana. In one case, a mother's grave mental illness with a terrible curse in the chart, the remedy prescribed (by another astrologer) was Hanuman Chalisa 108 times a day for 108 days, or at least 48. One mala a day would do nothing there.
• Four or five hours a day of focused sadhana can make many material things happen. But the person will probably lose interest in the goal and be put on a spiritual path.
• People now do ten minutes and are satisfied.
• Paid proxies: doing it yourself is better. With a proxy the result depends on your link with him and his link with God, on his spiritual strength, and on whether he does it at all. The teacher tells of priests hired for Rudra japa who sat in the temple chatting. God is kind to the man who paid in good faith and gives some result; the priest who took the money earns a terrible new karma.
• What counts is devotion, not the count or the hours: "what kind of plane you are able to rise to when you are reading a mantra." You cannot judge spiritual calibre by clothes, a beard or vibhuti.
• If the person cannot do it himself, recommend a priest you know to be good.
