PVNR's Car Problem — Daily TP + D16 & Fine Dasha Subdivision Reference Points

Event: August 14, 2005, about 8:25–8:35 AM Eastern. The car would not start. It started, dropped to zero RPM and died each time he tried to reverse. Ten minutes of forward–backward before the RPM came up. He walked into class late and checked the daily chart on the spot.

Setting Up the Daily Chart

• In JHora he switched the display time zone from the birth zone (5:30 east of GMT) to the local one (4 hours west of GMT, Eastern Daylight Time).
• This changes only the numbers shown. The calculations are untouched.

"As a point in time, it is still the same point in time, but you are expressing it in a different number because you are saying it with respect to another time zone. Just convenient."

• Tithi Pravesha tab → event date August 14, 2005, 8:30 AM → "daily chart" → "before" → find previous chart.
• A "day" in the native's life passes each time the Moon–Sun angle advances 12° from its birth value.
• The day running at the event began August 13, 2005, 1:33 PM Eastern.
• Daily chart: Aries lagna in Rasi, Aquarius lagna in D16.

Which Dasha Was Running?

Ashtottari dasha is used with annual, monthly and daily TP charts.

• August 14, 5:10–7:40 AM → Rahu dasha
• August 14, 7:40 AM–12:00 → Venus dasha
• Event at 8:30 AM → Venus dasha

Venus in the Daily Rasi Chart

• Venus is the karaka of vehicles.
• Venus is in the 6th house (Virgo) — his Marana Karaka Sthana. Badly placed.
• That shows some problem, disappointment or frustration in what Venus rules: the 2nd house, the 7th house, or what he signifies — vehicles among many other things.
• Rasi only tells you approximately. Rasi is the whole physical existence, where every environment converges. For the exact area, go to the divisional chart.

Venus in the Daily D16 (Shodasamsa — Vehicles)

• D16 lagna Aquarius: Venus = 4th lord (vehicles) and 9th lord → Yogakaraka.
• Venus is in the 12th house (Capricorn) → compromise, disappointment, loss.
• Happiness from the vehicle is seen from the 4th house. Take the 4th house, Taurus, as lagna: Venus is its lord, but he sits in the 9th from it — the Badhaka sthana of a fixed sign.

"If somebody is in Badhaka sthana, what kind of troubles do they show? Some unexpected troubles. You don't know why the trouble happened, you don't know why the trouble disappeared."

Why It Was Only an Irritation

• Venus is a Yogakaraka in this chart, even though he is not well placed.
• From Taurus he is the lagna lord. "Lord of lagna will never harm the lagna." Being in Badhaka sthana he can only give trouble for a short while.
• A student's point: Venus is also lord of A6. A6 shows obstacles and working hard to overcome them. He struggled and got the car going.

A Caveat on Small Events

• A deha-antardasha lasts roughly 4 to 8 hours. An event has to be important within that span to show clearly.
• An hour and a half of teaching will show. A 5–10 minute irritation "may or may not show".
• It may show if transits are integrated with the dasha, "but we are not really experts in that kind of astrology."
• For an event of that size the daily TP chart is the better bet.

Deha-antardasha, Exchange of Results and the Reference Point for Each Dasha Level

The Vimshottari Deha-antardasha at the Same Moment

• PVNR subtracts 1 day, 4 hours, 17 minutes from the software's Vimshottari dates for his own chart. Without that shift his past events do not make sense.
• With the shift, Rahu's deha-antardasha (6th level) ran from 1:41 AM to 10:53 AM on August 14.
• In the natal D16 (Cancer lagna) Rahu is the 8th lord (Aquarius) and sits in the 11th, Taurus — the Badhaka sthana of a movable lagna. Problems with vehicles are possible in his period.

Whose Results Does Rahu Give? — Exchange of Results

Rahu is with Mercury and Ketu in the natal D16. Planets together in a divisional chart exchange results, so first arrange them in order of beneficence.

• The order is by natural beneficence. Functional status (8th lord, 6th lord) does not enter.
• Rahu or Ketu — which is more benefic? It depends on the chart.

"Both are nodes, both are shady. But one is spiritually shady, one is materially shady."

• In charts of spirituality and dharma — children, marriage, doing dharma — take Ketu as more benefic than Rahu.
• In charts of material enjoyment — a nice car, pleasures — Ketu wants you to give those things up. He can give a big trouble so that you learn the lesson. Take Rahu as more benefic.
• D16 is material: the order is Mercury, Rahu, Ketu. Mercury and Ketu exchange results. Rahu, in the middle, gives his own.

Reference Point for Each Level

"This is what we have from the tradition."

• The chara Atmakaraka is "like Sun but more personalized, more minute, more sukshma".

All Chara Karakas at the Sukshma Level

Using only the Atmakaraka is not accurate. All the karakas show your atma; the Atmakaraka is only their king.

"It is not exactly that Jnati Karaka will show the souls of other people. All these karakas show your soul, but various aspects of it. Jnati Karaka is the part of your soul which is dealing with various rivalries, competition."

• A maraka sukshma-antardasha counted from the Matri Karaka → something may happen to mother.
• If the Amatya Karaka is involved → career, your activities in the world, are affected.

Dasha Pravesha — the Entry Chart and the Three Ways to Judge a Sub-period

The Condition

All of this is "mainly of academic interest" unless the birth time is rectified very finely against many events and the dasha dates are corrected to match — as PVNR did with his 1 day 4 hours 17 minutes.

The Technique

• Dasha Pravesha = the entry of a dasha. Cast a chart for the moment a dasha, antardasha or lower period starts.
• That moment is a new birth. The sub-periods inside it are the dashas of that short life.
• To judge deha-antardashas, go one level up and cast the entry chart of the prana-antardasha.

"When Jupiter's prana-antardasha started, it's like a new birth. The various deha-antardashas are basically like dashas in that life."

• His Jupiter prana-antardasha: August 11, 2005, 9:29:25 PM to August 14, 2005, 10:53:44 AM (Eastern Daylight Time). Those three days are one short life.
• In that entry chart (Leo lagna) Rahu is the 7th lord in the 8th house — a maraka, and badly placed. For those three days Rahu's deha-antardasha shows some problem. A maraka at this level does not mean death; the chart covers three days, not a life.

Which Reference in an Entry Chart?

A student asks whether Pranapada should be used here.

• Pranapada Lagna, Sun, Moon and the karakas are the references in the natal chart only.
• In any Pravesha chart the lagna is the reference for the next level down, "period".

Approach 1 — Natal Chart with the Level's Reference

Jupiter's prana-antardasha is judged from natal Pranapada Lagna.

• Rasi: from PP Jupiter is the 8th and 11th lord — a functional malefic — alone in the 6th house. Vipareeta Raja Yoga; a benefic in the 6th. No struggle, things go smoothly.
• D24 (learning): PP in Sagittarius. Jupiter is lagna and 4th lord in the 4th house, in Pisces → Hamsa Yoga from PP. A lot of learning.
  • Jupiter aspects the 10th from PP (Virgo) by both rasi drishti and graha drishti, so he has both the desire and the ability to give its results.
  • Rahu and Ketu are there — the 3rd lord of communication and the 12th lord of giving. Much communication and giving in society, on astrology.
• D10: PP in Pisces. Jupiter is lagna and 10th lord in the 11th house with Ketu, the 9th lord → Raja Yoga of 9th with 10th and 9th with 1st lords. Jupiter is debilitated but retrograde, "so he acts as if he is exalted". Good time in career.
• D20: from PP Jupiter is 9th and 12th lord in the 7th house → strong desire for moksha and for rituals in these days.

Approach 2 — The Lord One Level Up as Lagna

Jupiter's prana-antardasha comes many times. It cannot give the same result each time. This one falls inside Mercury's sukshma-antardasha, so take Mercury as lagna.

• Natal D24: Mercury is in Libra. From Libra Jupiter is 3rd and 6th lord in the 6th house.
• Results of the 3rd and 6th: initiative, communication, arguments.

Approach 3 — The Entry Chart

See how the planet stands in the entry chart of the period, in Rasi and in the divisional charts.

• As PVNR reads it in class: Jupiter is lagna lord in the 10th house in Rasi — "Jupiterian and Ketu-ine activities in society" — and lagna and 4th lord in the 11th in D24, showing learning.
• The site's cast of August 11, 2005, 9:29:25 PM EDT gives Leo lagna, which matches his Rahu reading above but not these two statements. They are kept as he said them.
• This approach is delicate. "When you are talking about the start of a period, you can't be 100% sure unless you have studied thoroughly."

Consolidate

"Now you have to consolidate all these things. See what are the things that stand out when you look at all the factors."

• The 3rd house stands out (Jupiter aspecting the 3rd lord; Jupiter as 3rd lord).
• The 10th house stands out (Jupiter aspecting the 10th; Jupiter in the 10th).
• What happened: in those three days PVNR was arguing on the Sohamsa list about Drig Dasha — a lot of argument, communication and sharing of his understanding with everybody.

Transits

• Ideally the sub-periods are also correlated with transits. PVNR leaves this out: "There are some things I know, some things I am not sure of."
• The Pravesha chart is itself a way of correlating with transits, "but there may be more to it".

How Far Down to Trust the Dashas

One Minute of Birth Time

• At noon IST on August 12, 2005 the native's deha-antardasha was Sun's, 11:45 to 12:26. At this point his deha-antardashas run under an hour each.
• So look at the prana-antardasha: Venus, 9:30 AM to 11:06 PM. The whole day of pain falls in it.
• Move the birth time by 2 seconds: little changes. Move it by 1 minute: the prana-antardasha that day becomes Mercury's, two periods away.
• Neither makes sense. In the natal Rasi Mercury and Venus are both fine (both in lagna). Sickness should show in the Rasi chart itself, without going to D6.

The Error Formula

• Error in dasha dates ≈ M × N ÷ 4 days. M = minutes of error in birth time. N = years of the first dasha.
• Here the first dasha is Sun's, 6 years. One minute of error → 6 ÷ 4 = 1.5 days.
• A time verified with D24 is only known to a 4-minute window. More events and more divisional charts narrow it. Unless you are sure the window is under a minute, you cannot use these levels.

The Advice

"My honest advice to you is, if you want to use nakshatra dashas, go up to pratyantardasha. That is it."

• Using nakshatra dashas for what happened in the last hour is "very unwise".

How Solid Is the Daily Chart?

• From tradition comes only this: you can make daily charts. The rest is inference.
• The compressed Ashtottari dasha used inside the daily chart is PVNR's inference. His first version did not work; Sanjay Rath suggested another; it worked reasonably and he uses it.

"It is not written in stone, whereas Vimshottari dasha is written in stone. This is written in sponge. So you have to take it with a pinch of salt."
