Rules Stated in This Class

11th House — Any Planet Is Favourable

The rule comes up while judging Saturn in the 11th house of the young man's D-10. A student offers the usual rule that malefics are good in 3, 6 and 11. The teacher separates the 11th from the other two:

"Anybody is good in the 11th house. […] Even benefics are good in the 11th. So 3, 6 are different from the 11th. The 11th is one house where any planet is favorable."

• 3rd and 6th: good for malefics.
• 11th: good for every planet, benefic or malefic. It is the house of gains.
• A good placement is still checked for affliction: "sometimes a planet may be good, but somebody may be afflicting him." Look at who is with the planet and who aspects it.

Viparīta Rāja Yoga — Only When Unafflicted

Stated twice in the young man's reading.

In the Rāśi chart — Saturn is the 12th lord in the 12th house, in his own sign, with nobody joining him:

• Mercury, the 8th lord, sits in the 6th and aspects him. "8th lord and 12th lord are on the 6th–12th axis aspecting each other. That's a great rāja yoga." Mercury's aspect is no problem.
• Moon, the 6th lord, has a three-quarter aspect on him. "6th lord aspecting 12th lord is not bad."
• Result: a full Viparīta Rāja Yoga — reversal from a bad position and rising.

In D-24, counted from the 9th house — Sun is the 6th lord in the 12th, but Mars, the 2nd and 9th lord, is with him:

• A duṣṭhāna lord is better in the 12th than in the 5th.
• "Had he been alone or with another duṣṭhāna lord, it would have shown sudden reversal and Viparīta Rāja Yoga."
• Mars is a benefic lord here. "The 2nd and 9th lord being with the 6th lord is not Viparīta Rāja Yoga."
• A student asks whether the 6th lord in the 12th does not give the yoga by itself. Answer: yes — if he is unafflicted.
• Here Sun still gives some relief from obstacles, but it is tempered: "This is not a proper Viparīta Rāja Yoga. This is only partial."

Rule: a duṣṭhāna lord in a duṣṭhāna gives Viparīta Rāja Yoga when he is alone or only with (or aspected by) other duṣṭhāna lords. A benefic house lord joining him spoils it.

Tithi Praveśa — Annual Lagna from Natal Lagna, and the Hora Lord

Two things are read in every annual Tithi Praveśa (TP) chart of the young woman's reading.

1. Where the annual lagna falls from the natal lagna.

"We see which house is occupied by the annual lagna compared to the natal lagna. So that will be the focus within the period. If it is the 8th house, there may be some setbacks. If it is the 7th house, marriage. 4th house, going abroad, like that."

• In the year he reads as "gains, a good year, but it doesn't specifically show marriage", the annual lagna is in the 11th from the natal lagna.

2. The Hora Lord — the ruler of the year.

• Judge him in the annual Rāśi and in the annual Navāṁśa: which houses he owns, where he sits.
• Sun as 12th lord in the 8th of the annual Rāśi and 5th lord in the 8th of the annual Navāṁśa: nothing about marriage.
• Sun as the exalted 7th lord of the annual Navāṁśa: a marriage year.

Inside the year, the month is taken from the Tithi Aṣṭottarī daśā of the annual chart (the transcript garbles the name), and from the practical point that muhūrtas for marriage are available in that month.

The Revised D-24 (Siddhāṁśa) Reckoning for Even Signs

The young man's D-24 is cast with a changed definition, and the teacher explains it.

• Parāśara maps the 24 parts of odd signs starting from Leo and the 24 parts of even signs starting from Cancer.
• Standard practice counts forward in both cases: Leo, Virgo, Libra … to Cancer, twice, for odd signs; Cancer, Leo, Virgo … to Gemini, twice, for even signs.
• "That's not symmetric, and moreover Parāśara specifically said the reckoning is reversed for even signs. But we applied it only to the devatās, not to the signs."
• Revised reckoning: for even signs go backward from Cancer — Cancer, Gemini, Taurus … to Leo, twice. "That's a perfect mirror image of the other one. That is structurally sound, and it makes sense with the wording Parāśara used."

What changes:

• Only planets in even signs of the Rāśi chart can change their D-24 sign.
• In this chart only Saturn (Capricorn) and Mercury (Cancer) are in even signs.
• Mercury in Cancer: Libra by the old count, Aries by the new one — the opposite sign.
• Saturn does not change. His D-24 sign is Capricorn, the 7th from Cancer, and "whether you count the 7th this way or this way, you get the same." The teacher's wording: "Planets in Cancer and Capricorn don't change, other planets will change." The arithmetic is on the D-24 sign: a planet that lands in Cancer or Capricorn stays there under either count.
• The reading of this chart does not change.

Scope:

• A student asks whether this applies to other charts. "This is only the calculation of Siddhāṁśa."
• A few other divisional charts — he names Ṣaṣṭyāṁśa and one more that the recording garbles — "may be incorrect for planets in even signs", but: "I haven't convinced myself of what is correct, so I stick to what we've been doing until now. I may change my mind later."
• On D-24 he is firm: "I am convinced that what we were doing is not correct."
