BPHS Chapter 11 — Bhava Viveka Adhyaya, the Eighth to Twelfth Houses

8th House — Randhra

Ayu ranam ripum chapi durgam mrita-dhanam tatha, gaty-anukadikam sarvam pashyed randhrad vichakshanah.

The teacher's gloss of the first words is lost in the recording; his summary of enemies (below) gives their sense.

The house of enemies is not just the 6th:

"What is the house of enemy? Do not say 6th house. 2nd, 6th and 8th."

• 2nd — enemies on account of wealth.
• 6th — enmities and rivalries with other people in general.
• 8th — enmities that take you to war; very serious ones, on account of which you have to put your life on the line.

The 8th as the link between lives:

"Even though the whole chart shows the karma, eighth house has serious links to any serious karmas from the past and serious karmas that are going to the future. So eighth house is the connection between lives."

9th House — Bhagya

Bhagyam syalam cha dharmam cha bhratri-patnyadikams tatha, tirtha-yatradikam sarvam …

The husband's siblings can be seen from the 9th in the same way.

10th House — Vyoma Sthana

Rajyam cha akasha-vrittim cha manam chaiva pitus tatha, pravasasya rinasyapi vyoma-sthanan nirikshanam.

Father from the 10th:

"So he is mentioning the 10th house for father, not the 9th."

"For now let us just observe that Parashara said 10th house is father. Let us not switch to using the 10th house. Let us continue to use the 9th house. We will reconcile later. Because this is not everything that Parashara is going to talk about father. He will obviously mention more about father later."

11th House — Bhava (Labha) Sthana

Judging a House — When It Prospers and When Its Results Are Lost

When a House Prospers

… yuva pravriddho rajyasthah kumaro vapi yat-patih, tad-ikshana-vashat tat-tad-bhava-saukhyam vaded budhah.

The first line of the verse is garbled. The teacher's summary gives its content:

• A benefic, or the lord of the house, occupies the house or aspects it.
• Benefic here: "It should actually mean functional benefic rather than natural benefic. But we don't know for a fact."
• The lord of the house is in yuva avastha, or kumara, or — Parashara also says — pravriddha. So he counts vriddha avastha as a good one: very mature. Bala avastha is not included.
• In other words the lord is in one of the middle three avasthas — the middle 18 degrees of the sign.
• Rajyastha — the lord is in the 10th house. The 10th from any house is important; the lord being there is a good thing.

"So either the lord or a benefic, either in the house or aspecting the house, or the lord of the house in one of the middle three … basically in the middle 18 degrees of the sign, and in the 10th house from the sign — then those are good."

Tad-ikshana-vashat — then, going by the aspects on that house, the learned man should declare happiness in the matters of that house.

When the Results of a House Are Lost

Yad-yad-bhava-patir nashtas trikeshadyaish cha samyutah, bhavam na vikshate samyak supto vriddho mrito'thava, pidito vasya bhavasya phalam nashtam vaded dhruvam.

The lord of the house:

• is nashta and joined by the trikesha and the like (the teacher's gloss of this line is garbled),
• does not aspect the house,
• is sleeping (supta avastha), or in vriddha avastha, or in mrita avastha,
• or is afflicted (pidita) by bad planets.

Then the results of that house are certainly lost.

The teacher's doubt: this verse puts vriddha avastha on the bad side, when the verse before it counted the mature state as good.

"This is actually not consistent. … Literally he is saying if the planet is in vriddha avastha or mrita avastha, which is suspicious."

The teacher says which pair he would have expected; the recording is not clear enough to give his exact words.

What These Two Verses Add

"All the subjective analysis that we have been doing so far is basically being formulated here as a formula. That's it. There isn't anything really interesting."

The one interesting thing is rajyastha — the lord of a house in the 10th is beneficial. It can be read two ways:

1. The lord of any house in the 10th house (from lagna) is good for that house.
2. The lord of a house in the 10th from that house is good for it.

"So I will not give my view on that. I will just give you both the interpretations and you try to apply."
