Saptamsa — Children When There Are Two Relationships

The same question — is this her first marriage or her second? — has to be asked before reading children.

The usual rule

• Saptamsa lagna odd: count forward. Even: count backward.
• The 5th so counted gives the first child. The sign its lord occupies (the paka) is taken as the child's lagna.
• Later children by manduka progression: every 3rd sign, each child the younger sibling of the one before.
• When counting to the 5th you may pass over a node. A student asks whether it matters that the count went past Rahu. It does not: the count starts from the 5th house.

Trying the usual rule on this chart

The facts: two children, and the first pregnancy after marriage was lost.

Saptamsa lagna is Cancer, even. Count backward.

• 5th backward = Pisces. Lord Jupiter, in Sagittarius with Ketu, in the 6th house. With Ketu in the 6th the pregnancy may be lost; it is even possible there is no pregnancy at all.
• Next, 3rd backward = Capricorn. Lord Saturn, with Rahu. Rahu ends pregnancies, but Saturn and Rahu are friends: "Rahu doesn't do anything to Shani." That pregnancy would survive.
• The next count has to cross over Ketu again. A second surviving child does not fit.

"She has two children. Does it make full sense? No, it doesn't."

The rule for the second relationship

"The 7th house shows the marriage, and the 5th house shows the fruits of marriage — 11th from the 7th. It is the gains that you get from the marriage. That is why the 5th house will show children."

• The usual rule is for the first marriage only. Children of each relationship are seen separately.
• The second marriage is the 8th from the 7th = the 2nd house. The first child of that marriage is the 11th from the 2nd, counted in the direction that sign requires.
• Odd or even is judged from the house of marriage, not from the lagna. PVNR: "I always told you to see the oddity of the lagna, but the actual rule is: see the oddity of the 7th house." The 1st and 7th always have the same oddity, so for a first marriage it makes no difference. For a second marriage it changes.
• After the first child, manduka progression as usual.

Applied

The first relationship gave no children. All three pregnancies belong to the marriage — the second relationship.

• 2nd house of the Saptamsa = Leo. Odd, though the lagna is even. Count forward.
• First pregnancy: 11th from Leo = Gemini.
  • PVNR first takes its lord Mercury, in Aries, as the first surviving child, and then catches the mistake: the lost pregnancy was left out.
  • Gemini itself holds Saturn and Rahu, and Saturn is the 8th lord of the Saptamsa. The pregnancy was lost.
  • Mercury's agenda was to bring the child; Saturn and Rahu worked against it and prevailed. Seeing the chart beforehand, the loss could not have been predicted with certainty. Had she come just after the marriage, the advice would have been to strengthen Mercury — pray to Vishnu — and the child might have survived.
• Second pregnancy, first surviving child: 3rd from Gemini = Leo. Lord Sun, in Leo with Venus.
• Third pregnancy, second surviving child: 3rd from Leo = Libra. Lord Venus, in Leo with the Sun.

Had the first relationship been ignored and the usual count used, the readings for the children would have been bogus.

Boy or girl

A student judges from the lord and the odd sign. PVNR:

• See the lord of the house, and then do not look at him. Look at who is with him.
• Only if that gives a tie, look at the lord himself and at the sign.
• Leo's lord the Sun has one planet with him, Venus: a girl. Correct — a daughter.
• Libra's lord Venus is with the Sun: a boy. Correct — a son.

Two children whose paka falls in the same sign

• First surviving child: Leo, with its lord in Leo. The paka is Leo and Leo is her lagna.
• Second surviving child: Libra. Its lord Venus is in Leo — a sign already taken.
• When two or three pakas fall in the same sign, for the second and third do not take the paka. Take the sign itself. So the son's lagna is Libra.
• PVNR: this is the rule from the parampara. He does not know the logic behind it or how accurate it is, but it has worked in other cases.

Reading a child's future spouse

• Not the 7th from the child's lagna. Take the upapada from that house: the arudha of the 12th from the child's lagna.
• Daughter (Leo). The 12th from Leo is Cancer, the lagna of the Saptamsa; its arudha is the AL, in Taurus.
  • Taurus: practical, pragmatic, hard-working, committed.
  • Saturn and Rahu in the 2nd from it: not talkative.
  • 5th lord Mercury in the 12th from it: occult knowledge; a pious, spiritual person.
  • Jupiter and Ketu (with the Moon) in the 8th from it: occult knowledge — he could know astrology, palmistry or numerology. Occult knowledge is from the 8th; the planets for astrology are Jupiter, Ketu and Mercury; the 5th is scholarship in general. The Moon in the 5th would show knowledge of sāṅkhya śāstra.
• Son (Libra). The 12th from Libra is Virgo, the 3rd house; its arudha A3 is in Scorpio.
  • Scorpio: secretive, passionate.
  • Jupiter and Ketu in the 2nd from it: talkative, with clear speech.
  • Mercury in the 6th from it: not great.
  • Saturn and Rahu in the 8th from it: a girl who has seen a lot of suffering and more than her share of shocks.
  • A student objects that for Libra, Saturn is the yogakaraka. They are being counted from Scorpio, the spouse's sign, not from Libra; from Libra they are in the 9th.

Papasthana vs Dusthana

A student reads Saturn and Rahu in the 8th as harmless: malefics in a dusthana.

The 8th is not a malefic house

• The 8th is a dusthana, but it is not a malefic house. Among benefic, malefic and neutral houses, the 8th is neutral.
• The 6th is a malefic house.

Papasthanas are 3, 6 and 11

• The papasthanas are the 3rd, 6th and 11th.
• The dusthanas — 6th, 8th, 12th — are dusthanas, but they are not all papasthanas. The 8th and the 12th are not.
• The upachayas, the houses of growth and accumulation, are 3, 6, 10 and 11: the three papasthanas plus the 10th, karma. "You grow either through the papas or you grow through karma."

The rule

"In any chart — Shani, Rahu, Ketu, Mars — for these planets, only 3, 6, 11 are good houses. Any other house is bad."

Nodes in a bad house

• A student: Rahu and Ketu destroy whatever house they are in. True.
• But when the house is a bad one, they also know how to promote it so that you suffer. "Their agenda is to give you suffering."

Bhoga in the Running Navamsa Dasha

At the time of the class the couple were living apart, she in India. The student asks how the current periods look for the marriage.

Mercury daśā in the Navamsa

• Not a good daśā for marital life: Mercury is with Ketu.
• Mercury–Ketu can be the trigger of the quarrels and fights.
• Mercury–Venus is slightly better.
• Mercury–Rahu is running.

Mercury–Rahu

• From Mercury, Rahu is in the 7th. The 7th from Rahu is Libra, the 5th house. Bhoga in the 5th.
• The 5th is normally good. The planets in it are the lagna lord Mercury and the 6th lord Ketu.
• Because Mercury is there, there is some protection. Had Ketu been there alone, it could have been the period of separation.

What Ketu wants

• By default Ketu wants people to marry, have children, then separate and go towards monkhood.
• When he is also the 6th lord — breaking of the marriage — he is only too eager to push that agenda.

The 5th house of the Navamsa

• The 5th is the house of emotions and feelings. In the Navamsa: feelings about marital life.
• Mercury as lagna lord gives hope — "maybe things will work out."
• Ketu gives disgust, the desire to cut it off.
• Together in Libra they make Libra the sign of balancing those two emotions and somehow getting along.

Is there a chance of coming together again?

• Rahu is the 9th lord (Aquarius) placed in the 11th. The 9th is protection: his agenda too is to protect the marriage.
• For marriage the kama trikonas are important, and the 11th is the house of gains.
• From the 11th he has labhargala on lagna.
• In the Rahu antardaśā there will be work towards protecting the marriage and getting it back on its legs. There is a chance.

Tithi Pravesha 2005 — The Year Ahead

To be more specific, PVNR opens the annual Tithi Pravesha chart for the year starting January 24, 2005, at 8:30 PM (India).

The Hora lord is the king of the year

"The lord of the hora running when the year started — he is the king of the year. Every planet has a specific agenda. Only those agendas will be advanced which belong to planets the ruler favours."

• There may be many people in a kingdom; only those close to the king get their jobs done.
• Planets well placed from the Hora lord and in a good relationship with him advance their cause.
• The Hora lord of this year is Mercury.

Mercury in the TP Rasi chart (Leo lagna)

• Mercury is lord of the 2nd and the 11th, placed in the 5th (Sagittarius), with Venus.
• The 5th lord Jupiter is in the 2nd (Virgo). Parivartana between the 2nd and 5th lords.
• Not a Raja Yoga, but a good combination. The 5th is emotions and the 2nd is family: for emotions relating to family life the year is good.

Mercury in the TP Navamsa (Virgo lagna) — the key

• Mercury is the lagna lord in the 4th house of comfort. The 4th is a good placement for Mercury.
• Venus is in the 3rd. Many houses are good for Venus; the 3rd particularly — the house of cheerfulness and initiative. There will be optimism and some cheer in marital life.
• The negatives: an eclipsed Mars in the 7th shows tension in the marriage, and the Sun with Rahu afflicts the 8th. The 7th and 8th are quite weak.
• But the Hora lord is well placed and associated with lagna. There will be disturbances; the year is still a good one.

Jupiter — the badhaka lord in the 12th

• In the Rasi, Jupiter has parivartana with the king and is in a kendra from him. Jupiter and Mercury will both advance their agendas fully.
• What is Jupiter's agenda? For dual signs the 7th is the badhaka sthana. Jupiter is the 7th lord of the TP Navamsa — the badhaka lord — and he is in the 12th.
• "For the badhaka lord, the only house that is good is the 12th house." It shows getting rid of badhaka.
• Badhaka is the trouble that has no explanation. The inexplicable troubles she is going through in marital life will go.
• Do not take it too literally. This is a one-year chart and has to be laid on top of what the natal chart shows for the whole life.
• The relief involves giving something up: Jupiter is in the 12th, the house of giving up. There will be some compromise on her part, and happiness as a result of it.
• "Compared to the last few years, my judgment is this year will be a much better year."

When in the year — Tithi Ashtottari daśā

• The relief is likely in Jupiter's daśā of the year.
• February 22 to April 28 is a very auspicious time. Let her make a fresh start then and look at things with an optimistic spirit.
• Not before. The period before it — Saturn's — is not that good. Wait till about February 20; then she will be in the right frame of mind to make the right decisions.

Make the king happy as the year begins

• The year begins at the exact moment of the Tithi Pravesha: January 24, 8:30 PM.
• Mercury is the king, and Mercury is Vishnu. At that moment she should pray to Vishnu — read the Vishnu Sahasranama — at home, or have a puja done at a temple.
• Mercury is with Venus in the TP Rasi chart, so more exactly Lakshmi Narayana.
