Next UL Marriage, Rahu-Ketu = Barrier-Breaking, D12 Parents, Sunapha/Anapha & House Buying
A serious relationship of several months counts as a marriage. The Upapada here is in Capricorn, a dry sign, and its 2nd lords Saturn and Rahu sit in the 8th from it, so the first relationship does not become a marriage; the next one is read from the 8th house from the UL (Leo), and in navāṁśa from the 8th from the 7th. Rahu or Ketu on the Upapada or its 2nd lord shows a partner from across a cultural barrier, not necessarily another country; love is a separate matter, shown by Venus, A7, the 5th house and UL. The year's Tithi Praveśa is read for a chance of marriage. The page also covers the D20 (5th and 10th lords in the 7th = spiritual work for society; 9th lord Moon in the 8th = little religiosity; Capricorn daśā 2015–2021 as the turning point), D12 with the 4th house as mother's lagna and the 9th as father's, Sunaphā and Anaphā yogas, house buying from A4, UL and Mars in D4, and why no single chart decides an event.
Key principle
Foreigner is just our way of expressing it. The real thing is not foreigner. It's breaking some kind of barrier. That is Rahu and Ketu.
Example Charts
D20 (Vimsamsa) — Spiritual Analysis
With the time at 6:43 the D20 lagna is Scorpio. The D20 lagna is not confirmed by any event; the teacher takes it on trust.
Key Observations
- 5th lord Jupiter and 10th lord Sun together in the 7th house. The 5th is following, fame and recognition for ability. The 10th is the work you do. Together: good work, and fame for it. Yogas in the 7th have a good chance of giving their result because desire is behind them.
- In D20 this is spiritual or religious work in society, for other people, and recognition for it — not personal sādhanā.
- Jupiter and Sun are in A9 (Taurus). When the right daśās come he does religious work in a tangible way.
- 9th lord Moon in the 8th house. The 9th is the house of religiousness: dharma, pūjā. Two faults together: the 9th lord is in the 12th from the 9th, and Moon in the 8th is in Maraṇa Kāraka Sthāna. This Moon does not show a religious person.
- Saturn in the 9th can show some religiosity.
- 7th lord Venus and 8th lord Mercury together in lagna = a māraka combination. It stops spirituality from taking off. (Venus is in Scorpio only with Venus at the end of Aries in rāśi, as in the class software. The site's chart has Venus at 0°01' Taurus and so in Sagittarius here.)
- Lagna lord Mars in the 3rd, exalted in Capricorn but retrograde, so he gives results as if debilitated. Lagna lord in the 3rd still shows growth.
Reading an Arudha — A8
- Aries, the daśā running now, holds A8.
- Every arudha has two faces. A8 can show high spiritual experiences, or their absence. Judge the 8th house first. If the 8th house shows a great sādhaka, A8 shows that capacity manifesting. If the 8th house is weak, A8 manifests the negative.
- Here the 8th house does not show much sādhanā, so A8 shows only lack of religion. The published class notes put it as: with a weak 8th lord, A8 shows death-like situations in spiritual matters.
D20 Narayana Dasha (Spiritual Timing)
| Dasha | Period | Assessment |
|---|---|---|
| Aries | Running in 2006 | 6th house. No link to the mokṣa trikoṇa or the dharma trikoṇa. Not religious now. |
| Scorpio | 2007–2010 | The lagna. Lagna lord in the 3rd → a spark starts; he takes some interest and talks to people. The māraka pair in lagna stunts it. |
| Gemini | after Scorpio | Mixed. The 8th house shows sādhanā, but it holds the 9th lord Moon in MKS. Not a great period. |
| Capricorn | 2015–2021 | The turning point. |
Why Capricorn:
- It is the 3rd house of initiative and holds the lagna lord Mars.
- Its lord Saturn is in the 9th house of dharma, and he is in A5, the mantra pada.
- Capricorn aspects Jupiter and Sun in Taurus by rāśi dṛṣṭi. None of the earlier daśā signs — Aquarius, Virgo, Aries, Scorpio, Gemini — aspects that yoga. Capricorn is the first.
- The full result of the yoga may come only in Taurus daśā, around age 55.
Until 2015 nothing shows on the surface. From 2015 to 2021 the spark becomes a small fire. The rāśi chart gave the same years: 2017, 2018, 2019.
What Kind of Spirituality
- This is not a chart of heavy sādhanā. The houses of his own spiritual growth are not strong.
- It is a chart of work for others: make a lot of money and give it to a spiritual organisation or to charity. In doing so he picks up some interest himself.
"If a bag contains sandalwood powder, when you remove the sandalwood powder, the bag will have that smell. Like that, he will be."
- With this yoga he has to be materialistic and make money. If he went to a cave to do tapas, the karma of the Sun-Jupiter yoga would not get done. "What is your destiny is not my destiny." Each person is moulded for his own path.
UL and Marriage Analysis
To see marriage, look at the Upapada first, then the navāṁśa.
What counts as a marriage. A formal wedding is not required. If the person intended to marry someone and lived with them for a while — a serious relationship of several months — that counts as a marriage.
UL in Capricorn — First Relationship Analysis
- UL is in Capricorn, a dry sign, not a fruitful one. It gives its result with difficulty.
- The Upapada shows a particular relationship. The 2nd from it shows what sustains that marriage. If the UL is in a dry sign, the 2nd house and 2nd lord from it must be very strong.
- The 2nd from UL is Aquarius. Its lords Saturn and Rahu are in Leo, the 8th house from UL, the house of breaking the marriage, in an inimical sign with Mars, Moon and Jupiter — planets they do not like.
- The 2nd lord is weak. That marriage may not come at all.
- Deśa-kāla-pātra. For someone born in India, the parents would arrange it somehow and the marriage probably happened. For a chart in the US: most likely a serious relationship that could not be converted into marriage.
- That Upapada is then finished.
Ask for the History
- The teacher asks whether there was an earlier relationship that broke. The student does not know.
- To say anything about marriage you need the history. Do not ask everyone. Ask when the chart gives a reason to suspect it, as here.
- If you are not sure which relationship is running, do not predict on it. Find out first — from the native, or from the mother.
Next UL = 8th from UL
- For the next marriage or serious relationship, go to the 8th house from the Upapada and treat it as the lagna of that relationship.
- 8th from Capricorn = Leo. That is the second one. If it breaks, the 8th from Leo shows the third.
- Rahu is in Leo → the partner can be a foreigner.
- The 2nd from Leo is Virgo. Its lord Mercury is in the 7th from Leo, in a friendly sign with Ketu. This one has a good chance of becoming a marriage.
- Rahu or Ketu joined to the Upapada, or to the 2nd lord from it, shows a foreign partner. The first UL has it too (its 2nd lord Saturn is with Rahu). The teacher's judgment is that the foreign partner is the second relationship, so there was an earlier one.
Navamsha Cross-check
- From rāśi and Upapada: how easily the marriage comes, the background, how long it lasts.
- From navāṁśa: the person — looks, career, income, background, happiness from parents.
- The 7th house of navāṁśa is Capricorn → the first partner.
- The 8th from it, Leo → the second.
- Get the count right first. Then take the 7th, or the 8th from it, or the 8th from that, as lagna and read the partner.
- Love and barrier-breaking are seen in both charts, but mostly in rāśi.
Rahu-Ketu = Barrier-Breaking, Not Just "Foreigner"
A student asks what "foreigner" means for someone raised in the US.
- Do not think in countries. A man born and raised in Tamil Nadu who marries a Punjabi girl has married a foreigner.
- Rahu and Ketu show a partner from a culture drastically different from the one you live every day. It depends on how the native was brought up.
- A boy raised in the US in a purely Indian way: even the girl next door, raised in American culture, is a foreigner for him.
- A boy raised with both cultures: an American partner is not a foreigner for him, and neither is a girl who came from India.
- In the old days a Catholic married a Catholic and an Indian married an Indian. Marrying inside the culture you understand is not Rahu-Ketu. Going outside it is.
"Foreigner is just our way of expressing it. The real thing is not foreigner. It's breaking some kind of barrier. That is Rahu and Ketu."
Love marriage is a different matter. It has nothing to do with breaking barriers.
- Venus shows love. Look for links between Venus, A7, the 5th house and UL.
- Venus in lagna, Venus in the 5th, Venus in A7, A7 in the 5th, Moon or Venus in A7 — all of these show love.
The Coming Year — Tithi Praveśa of April 10, 2006
His Gregorian birthday is days away. The Tithi Praveśa falls on April 10. Gemini lagna.
- Hora lord Sun is the 3rd lord in the 10th house with Rahu. Sun is at 27°, Rahu at 9°: far apart, no big problem. Sun in the 10th is always good for career. As 3rd lord: more initiative at work, new responsibilities.
- Mars in lagna → bold, which is good materially, but aggressive, stubborn and prone to anger this year.
- Lagna lord Mercury in the 9th with the 5th lord Venus → excellent. Mercury is at 29°, Venus at 10°: not a tight conjunction. They are also the ātmakāraka and putrakāraka, and those two together give a Rāja Yoga. Two Rāja Yogas from Venus and Mercury, in the 9th, with Ghaṭī Lagna and Śrī Lagna there.
- 10th lord Jupiter is in the 5th. Venus and Mercury are in the 5th from AL.
- A great year materially.
- D10 of the year: Mercury in the 2nd, good for resources. 6th lord Jupiter and 8th lord Venus together in the 8th → Viparīta Rāja Yoga, sudden growth at someone else's cost. Sun, the 11th lord, in the 10th brings gains. Mars with him is not well placed: some setback through anger, or having to hold himself back. Minor.
- D9 of the year: the 7th lord Sun is in lagna, and he is the hora lord. A chance of marriage, or of a serious relationship, in this year.
- Message to the mother: do not worry about him now.
D12 (Dwadasamsa) — Mother and Father Analysis
D12 is the chart for mother and father. With the rectified time the D12 lagna is Leo.
Reading D12 for Parents
- 4th house of D12 = mother. Take it as her lagna.
- 9th house of D12 = father. Take it as his lagna.
- Do not stop at the houses. See Moon and Sun, the kārakas, and how strong they are.
Mother (4th house = Scorpio as lagna)
- Jupiter in lagna → intelligent, traditional, religious.
- Saturn in the 9th. The 9th lord Moon in a friendly sign, Jupiter's. She is religious.
- Venus and Ketu in the 5th with Saturn in trine → Tapasvī Yoga. 5th lord Jupiter in lagna → very devotional. (Venus is in Pisces in the class software, which has Venus at the end of Aries in rāśi. The site's chart has Venus at 0°01' Taurus and so in Taurus here.)
- Scorpio gives strong determination, and its lord Mars is with Rahu: some rigidity. With Jupiter in lagna it is not a big problem.
- Moon in the 2nd house of speech → soft-spoken, cultured. She picks the right words and speaks from the heart, with no cunning.
- General rule: Moon and Venus in the 2nd house give cultured, compassionate, well-organised speech. The person picks the right words.
The Native's Own Speech
- In D12 Mars and Rahu are in his 2nd house → the way he speaks to his parents may be harsh.
- In rāśi the 2nd house is empty and the 2nd lord Venus is in lagna. He also speaks nicely, but with Venus it is speech with a purpose: diplomatic, manipulative. He knows what he wants and decides how to say it. The 2nd house of rāśi is how he speaks to people in general.
- That is the difference between mother and son.
Father (9th house = Aries as lagna)
- Aries itself shows stubbornness. Its lord Mars is in the 6th, the house of winning over people, with Rahu.
- He has to win at any cost. He hates losing. Very stubborn, maybe arrogant.
- Disagree with him and he argues for a week, until you say he is right.
- Scorpio's determination is watery and ice-cool: "No, we are doing this", and no argument. Aries is fiery. Mother has the cool kind of stubbornness, father the hot kind.
Native's Relationship with Parents
- Closer to mother. Jupiter in the 4th and lagna lord Sun in lagna are friends and in mutual kendras.
- The 9th lord Mars is a friend of Sun too, but he is with Rahu. Arguments with father are likely.
- Native and father are both Aries types. Two rams: only one rules the ground. The mother, a Scorpio type, adjusts.
- Moon is in a trine, in a friendly sign, and his dispositor Jupiter is in the 12th from him → Anaphā Yoga from a great benefic. Moon is strong.
- Sun is with Mercury, a benefic, but he is hemmed in: Saturn in the 12th from him, Mars and Rahu in the 2nd. Pāpa-kartarī Yoga. It is worse when the malefics are enemies, and Saturn and Rahu are Sun's enemies.
- Overall he is happier with mother than with father.
A Student's Question — Rāja Yoga with Trine Lords Only
- One view holds that a trine lord must join a quadrant lord to give Rāja Yoga.
- The teacher's view, and Parāśara's: lagna counts as a trine as well. Parāśara gives the yoga of the lagna lord and the 5th lord as a Mahārāja Yoga.
- Parāśara also gives a special Rāja Yoga for the 5th and 9th lords together, on condition that the lagna lord is strong.
Sunapha, Anapha, and Durudhara Yogas
Taught while judging Moon in D12.
| Yoga | Condition |
|---|---|
| Sunaphā | Any planet in the 2nd from Moon |
| Anaphā | Any planet in the 12th from Moon |
| Durudharā | Planets in both the 2nd and the 12th from Moon |
"Any planet in the 2nd from Moon will give Sunaphā Yoga. Any planet in the 12th house from Moon will give Anaphā Yoga. Both are very auspicious yogas."
In this D12, Jupiter in the 12th from Moon gives Anaphā Yoga.
House Buying — D4 Framework
A student's question at the end of class.
- Kāraka: Mars.
- Chart: D4, Chaturthāṁśa. It shows lands, houses and properties that you own, whether you live in them or hold them as investment. The rāśi chart is physical: it shows whether you physically live in and enjoy the house.
- Tangible or intangible? Happiness about your home is intangible: see it from the houses. The physical house you own is tangible: see it from the arudhas of the houses.
- The 4th house of D4 is the happiness you get from the house you live in or own.
- The 4th is the house of home. So the house you have is A4.
- A4 is the house you have, not the buying. Buying is an expense: the 12th house. UL, the arudha of the 12th, is the tangible expense.
- Look for links between UL, A4, the 4th house, the 12th house, Mars and Venus in D4.
- Buying a house may or may not bring a tangible profit. If A4 has Mars in it, and A9 as well, the person may invest in a lot of real estate — land bought before a city grows, worth ten times later.
- No example was done. The teacher asks the class to bring charts of people who bought a house, both to live in and as investment, for the next class.
Multiple Charts Determine Any Single Event
The class had asked about a lottery jackpot won by a group, and about many people dying in one disaster.
Lottery
- Every winner must have strong dhana yogas in his own chart. "If you don't have a yoga in your chart to make you rich, even if you buy at the most auspicious time, you will not win."
- If they won together there must be a link between their charts.
- The time the ticket was bought matters too.
- All of these together give the result. Whether the numbers drawn can be predicted from the time of the draw and the founding of the lottery — the teacher has not studied it, and says nothing good would come of it.
Disasters
- When thousands die together, each chart must have its māraka combination, and the time must have come for each.
- In an earthquake some people in the same place escape. The individual chart still counts.
- There is also the mundane chart of the country, and the chart of the thing itself. When a flight takes off, cast a chart for that moment. Whether the trouble is a glitch or a disaster depends also on what periods the passengers are running.
"No single chart decides everything. Your own chart, your country's chart, your group's chart, the muhūrta chart, the chart when you started a particular thing."
- "Today's class, whether it goes well or not, depends on my chart, your chart, and also the chart when we started today's class."
- A thing done together has a life and a consciousness of its own, born when it starts. It has its own destiny from that moment.
Muhūrta
- In the old days people looked for a good time even for a journey.
- Now millions are spent on a launch and nobody checks the muhūrta. The teacher says the failed launches he has looked at began at terrible times by elementary muhūrta rules.
- A bad muhūrta does not guarantee disaster; it also depends on the fates of the people involved. But it gives a strong chance of some problem.
- Choosing a time for a take-off creates no karma. It costs nothing to do.
