Parents Analysis — Sanjay Gandhi's Dvadasamsa (D12)

Bad Planetary Relationships

Taught in the Dvadasamsa, when comparing the planets that show the mother and the father.

Dviradvadasa (2-12)

• One planet in the 2nd from the other, the other in the 12th from the first. Dvir = two, dvadasa = twelve.

Shadashtaka (6-8)

• One planet in the 6th from the other, the other in the 8th from the first.

Rule

• 2-12 and 6-8 are bad relationships. The two people do not get along.
• Planets in mutual quadrants or trines: a good relationship.
• Check also the natural relationship and the natures of the two planets.
• The test applies to any pair of the Lagnas worked out for relatives: father and mother, mother and grandfather, native and mother, native and father.

D-12 (Dvadasamsa) — Chart of Parents

• The Dvadasamsa is the chart of parents and everything above them.
• A student asked about D-40. D-40 is the karma inherited from the mother's side, up to seven generations. It is a chart of a very high karmic level, and the teacher had not rectified the birth time to that degree, so he did not use it. To see when the mother succeeds or has problems, D-12 is enough.
• D-45 is the same for the father's side: the karma inherited from the paternal line. The class notes say D-40 and D-45 are useful only in royal charts.

D-12 Lagna: Capricorn.

House, Lord, Graha Arudha

"Planets are people. Rasis are only situations."

• The 4th house taken as Lagna shows the comfort he gets from mother, how she takes care of him. Parenting is a situation.
• The 4th lord is the mother herself — her Satya, what happens to her in truth. Take the sign where the 4th lord sits as her Lagna.
• The graha arudha of the 4th lord shows the mother in the flesh, what she experiences at a given time. Just as houses have arudha padas, every house lord has an arudha. Not yet defined in the course; left aside.
• In any chart, for wife, parents or children, the lord gives better results than the house. Some people take the house itself in Navamsa or Dvadasamsa.
• For the wife above, the 7th lord was in the 7th, so the house was used.

The Mother — Capricorn as Lagna

• 4th house = Aries. 4th lord Mars is exalted in Capricorn, in Lagna, with Saturn and Moon.
• Nature: Mars with Saturn in her Lagna — some aggression, and some cold-heartedness.
• Venus dasha: from Capricorn Venus is the 5th and 10th lord, a Yogakaraka. The mother rises in Venus's period.
• Sun dasha (1967–1973): Sun is in the 10th (Libra) — the planet of politics in the house of karma can give political power. He is the 8th lord, debilitated. A debilitated dusthana lord is good: obstacles are few or easily overcome, things come easily, and there is much political power. In these years she took the Congress party under her control. The party split and there was some tension, but she had things very easy.
• Moon dasha: Moon, the 7th lord, is in Lagna with Mars and Saturn.
  • Mars is red: blood, anger, aggression. Saturn is blue: sadness, melancholy. Together they are a clash between two extremes, "like two boxers". The planet caught with them suffers. Moon suffers: negative indications, obstacles, worries.
  • At the same time Moon (7th lord) and Mars (4th lord) own quadrants and Saturn owns Lagna, a trine. Together in Lagna they give a Raja Yoga.

The Father — Aquarius as Lagna

• 9th house from Lagna = Virgo. 9th lord Mercury is in Aquarius.
• Capricorn and Aquarius are both Saturn's, but Aquarius is the subtler sign: philosophy and thinking. Mercury, the planet of thinking, intellect and analysis, is in it. In one word, a thinker.
• Jupiter and Venus are in Cancer, the 6th from Aquarius, and have rasi drishti on Mercury. Jupiter dominates there, being exalted. Cancer is Moon's sign, the sign of sensitivity and compassion.
• Mercury is extremely adaptive — flexible to the point of being fickle. He turns benefic or malefic by the company he keeps. Alone, under the rasi drishti of Jupiter and Venus, he acts as a benefic: an intelligent, compassionate, unaggressive person.
• Sun (Libra) also has rasi drishti on Mercury.
• Moon, Mars and Saturn in Capricorn are in the 12th from Mercury: losses, and selfless giving. A strong 11th wants many things; a strong 12th does not. He can give up anything. Not selfish.

Relationship Between the Parents

• Mother = Mars in Capricorn. Father = Mercury in Aquarius.
• Mercury is in the 2nd from Mars; Mars is in the 12th from Mercury: Dviradvadasa.
• Their natures do not match either: Mars is aggressive; Mercury is analytical, inquisitive, and here compassionate.
• Verdict: incompatibility between father and mother.

Maternal Grandfather

• Mother is the 4th. Her father is the 9th from there; her mother would be the 4th from there.
• 4th from Capricorn = Aries. 9th from Aries = Sagittarius. Its lord Jupiter is in Cancer. Cancer shows Jawaharlal Nehru.
• Mother and grandfather: Mars (Capricorn) and Jupiter (Cancer) are in mutual quadrants, aspecting each other. They are friends, and both are exalted. A very good relationship.
• Grandfather and father: from Jupiter, Mercury is in the 8th; from Mercury, Jupiter is in the 6th. Shadashtaka. They do not get along at all.
• The same steps give the other grandparents (4th and 9th from each parent). The teacher did not read them, knowing nothing about them to check against.

Mother's Death

• A student asked which dasha gives the mother's death, and whether to look to the 8th lord from her Lagna. The teacher agreed in principle but left it: for the mother in the flesh, and for sickness, the graha arudha is needed.

D-3 (Parashari Drekana) — Chart of Siblings

Parasara's Drekkana shows siblings.

Ground Rules

• Odd sign in Lagna: count the houses in the normal direction.
• Even sign in Lagna: count backwards.
• Odd and even are by the natural order: Aries is the 1st sign, Taurus the 2nd.
• "There are a lot of exceptions." These are the ground rules only. Siblings and children were promised for another class.

The Elder Brother

• D-3 Lagna = Capricorn, the 10th sign. Even. Count backwards.
• Rajiv Gandhi is the immediate elder brother: the 11th house.
• 11th from Capricorn counted backwards = Pisces.
• Lord of Pisces, Jupiter, is in Gemini with Venus. Gemini shows the elder brother.

Reading from Gemini

• Ketu: planet of moksha, of going above, and of flying. The teacher added, from memory and with a caveat, that Rajiv Gandhi's own Dasamsa also has Ketu in the 10th.
• Chandra-Mangala Yoga: Moon owns the 2nd (resources); Mars owns the 6th and 11th. Placement matters: the yoga is powerful in a friend's sign and weak in, say, Aquarius. Here both are in friend Jupiter's sign, so it gives full results. It makes an achiever.
• Political power: a student offered Sun in the 2nd. The teacher looked to the 5th, the house of power. Venus is the 5th lord, in Lagna with Jupiter, lord of two quadrants (7th and 10th). Trine lord with quadrant lord = Raja Yoga.

Timing by the Native's Dashas — and Its Limit

• By this chart one would expect Venus or Jupiter periods to raise the brother.
• He became Prime Minister in the native's Mars dasha; the teacher thought the rise was in Mars–Jupiter antardasha.
• The antardasha fits. Jupiter suits better than Venus: he is the 10th lord, joined with the 5th lord, and the dispositor of the Chandra-Mangala Yoga. Mars and Jupiter (in mutual 7th) also give Guru-Mangala Yoga.
• "Honestly, I would have expected Venus and Jupiter to play a better role" — Venus–Jupiter or Jupiter–Venus.

"When you use somebody's dashas to see the events in somebody else's life, there is an inherent limitation. It will not be perfect."

• There are variations of the dashas tuned to the relative — for example a Narayana Dasha computed for this brother alone. With that, things fit.
• This was also a posthumous event. After the native's death you see events only to a limited extent (see Vimshottari After Death).

D-3 Parivritti Traya Drekana — Applied Determination Chart

All Drekkana variations rest on the 3rd house, so they show things related to initiative.

• The teacher only glanced at the Jagannatha Drekkana: Moon is in the 8th there, matching the suffering and bad karma of Moon dasha. He did not discuss it or the Somanatha Drekkana.

What the Chart Shows

• The spheres of life into which a person's determination is directed.
• Quadrants matter most. Trines are blessings and quadrants are effort; for determination, effort counts more. Trines also count.
• A planet in a quadrant or trine: its significations prosper; determination and energy go that way.
• A planet badly placed: you may have the ability and the instinct, but you do not feel like doing it.
• The Dasamsa shows what gets done. This chart is the seed: what you feel like getting done.

"You may have the ability, you may have the instincts, but you may just not feel like doing it."

In This Chart (Parivritti D-3 Lagna Cancer)

• Mars in a quadrant (10th, Aries), in Moolatrikona. Strong. The aggressive "just do it, don't think" spirit is what he applies in life.
• Mercury in a quadrant (7th, Capricorn). His agenda is implemented too. In the Rasi Mercury is the 6th and 9th lord: overcoming obstacles, and dharma. Mercury is a pragmatist where Jupiter is an idealist: a pragmatic dharma. In the Rasi he is with Sun and Ketu: politics in his dharma, and some cutting-off. He saw that as his dharma and carried it out with full vigour.
• Jupiter in the 6th (Sagittarius). In the Rasi he is the 3rd lord in the 10th: peaceful, wise determination and wise karma in society. That agenda is spoiled; he does little in it. The instincts of wisdom and discretion do not reach physical manifestation.
• Venus is also in the 6th. Her agenda suffers too.

Dashas

• Antardashas of planets in quadrants or trines of this chart: you feel energetic and feel like doing things.
• Dashas of planets in dusthanas here: more lethargic.
• A weak planet's work may still get done in the antardasha of a strong planet with argala on it. Mars is strong and has argala on Jupiter, so Jupiter's work may get done in Mars antardasha.
• A student who was always too lazy to learn astrology and then learns it with determination in one antardasha will find the link in this chart.

Remedy: Getting Jupiter's Work Done

The teacher posed it as a case: the native comes wanting to do Jupiterian karma in society.

• More than praying to Jupiter, look for the strong planets here with graha drishti or argala on him: Mercury and Mars.
• Mars is in own sign. He is the one inclined to help.
• Mercury is in Saturn's sign and so at Saturn's disposal. Two relationships decide it: Mercury–Jupiter (how willing Mercury is) and Saturn–Jupiter (how willing the dispositor is to let him). Neither is great. Mercury is unlikely to help; even in Mercury antardasha he is unlikely to do Jupiterian karma.
• So propitiate Mars — Subrahmanya. The catch: that makes him do more Martian karma as well.
• Venus will be helped by Mercury: Mercury and his dispositor Saturn are both friends of Venus. In Mercury antardasha, Venusian karma gets a boost.
