Gandanta in Muhurta (Travel, Marriage), Pancha-Bhuta Classification Basis & Complete Gandanta Rules
Gandanta is explicitly stated by Parashara to apply to Muhurta (electional astrology) not just natal charts — Yatra (travel), Vivaha (marriage), and any important event must avoid all three Gandanta types. Pancha-bhuta basis for Tithi Gandanta: the 30 tithis are classified into 5 groups (Nanda=1,6,11; Bhadra=2,7,12; Jaya=3,8,13; Rikta=4,9,14; Purna=5,10,15) corresponding to the 5 elements — the borders between these groups are where Tithi Gandanta falls, analogous to the fire-water Rashi Gandanta. Complete Gandanta summary: Tithi Gandanta = 3 borders (Panchami-Shashthi, Dashami-Ekadashi, Purnima/Amavasya-Pratipada), 4 ghatikas (96 min) total; Nakshatra Gandanta = 3 borders (Revati-Ashwini, Ashlesha-Magha, Jyeshtha-Mula), 4 ghatikas = ~half degree; Lagna Gandanta = last half-degree of Cancer/Scorpio/Pisces into first half-degree of Aries/Leo/Sagittarius. Effect: nidhanaprada = death-giving for any of the areas signified. Context: BPHS Chapter 91 on eclipse birth (Grahana Janma) Shanti was taught but not recorded; lesson 92 continues from Chapter 90 (Sankranti dosha). "Next class will continue Chapter 92 and cover the full Gandanta Shanti remedy procedure."
"At birth, at travel, at marriage — if Gandanta is present in the tithi, the nakshatra, or the lagna, Parashara says it becomes death-giving. This applies to any important muhurta you are choosing, not only to natal charts."
— P.V.R. Narasimha Rao
BPHS Chapter 92 — Gandanta Jata Shanti
Opening shloka (Parashara): "Tithi nakshatra lagna-naam gandantaam trividham spraham. Janma yatra vivaha-adau bhavet tat nidhanapradham."
Translation:
- For Tithi, Nakshatra, and Lagna → there are THREE kinds of Gandanta
- At birth (Janma), at travel (Yatra), at marriage (Vivaha), and other important times (adau)
- If any of these Gandantas is present → it becomes death-giving (nidhanapradam)
Applicability:
- Natal charts (Janma)
- Muhurta (electional) charts — travel, marriage, and any important events
- "This is applicable to Muhurta as well as Janma Chakra."
Critical word: "He did not clarify, so by default it is Moon nakshatra" (for nakshatra-based Gandanta).
