Alcoholism Chart Analysis — Moon in Evil Houses, Chart Rectification & D11 for Weaknesses

Initial Presentation

• The chart was posted on a list by the native's child: the father has been an alcoholic throughout his life, especially after 1989, intensifying in 1992–95, with health problems after that. The child was worried about the father's health.
• Given time: Leo lagna.
• The teacher's question to the class: does this chart show that the person can be addicted to alcohol?

What to Check for Alcoholism

• Saturn is the planet that causes alcoholism. A student said it; the teacher agreed.
• But which planet must be afflicted? Students offered Venus. The teacher: Venus may be afflicted, but Moon shows the mind, so the Moon should be afflicted.
• The 5th house must be looked at — it shows chitta: the thinking, the judgment, the wisdom.

"The Moon has to be really afflicted for a person to be addicted. It has to be connected to the 6th house, it has to be connected to the 8th house, or some kind of weakness should be there."

With Leo Lagna the Chart Does Not Make Sense

• Moon is in Sagittarius, the 5th house — a trine. Strong.
• Rahu (Scorpio, 4th) throws only its 2nd-house aspect on the Moon. "That small Rahu."
• Jupiter (Virgo, 2nd) has rāśi dṛṣṭi on Sagittarius, and Jupiter is the 5th lord. That strengthens the Moon. It does not weaken it.
• The 5th house and 5th lord are strong. No malefic aspect to speak of.
• A student raised Saturn's argala. The teacher: Mercury is there to remove it. The Moon by itself is not afflicted at all.
• A student raised A8. The teacher: it may show the period in which the trouble manifests. It does not show that the Moon is afflicted.
• 2nd house: Jupiter sits there as 8th lord. "Jupiter is basically a good planet. It may give you a tough time, but it may not give you bad habits per se."

Chart Rectification — Cancer Lagna

• The person who posted the chart said the time could be off by 4 or 5 minutes. The teacher did not accept that limit.

"According to me, if you ask me, the lagna should be Cancer."

• Correction: 23–26 minutes earlier, "around half an hour". At 17:30 the lagna is the last degree of Cancer.
• On birth times: people were not there measuring their own birth, their mothers were busy delivering them, and most give an approximation. This was 1957.

"It has to make sense astrologically. We could go wrong in principle, but later on we can rectify it."

• Other events must also be taken into consideration.

With Cancer lagna:

• Moon in the 6th house. Lagna lord in the 6th. It can show an intelligent, hardworking person — but still it shows a weakness.
• Moon is aspected by the 6th lord Jupiter (rāśi dṛṣṭi from Virgo).
• 5th house (Scorpio) holds Rahu and Saturn. Both play a role; Saturn specifically.
• Rudrāṁśa (D-11): Saturn comes to the 6th house → alcoholism is the major weakness.
• 2nd lord Sun in the 8th house (Aquarius) → bad habits as far as consumption is concerned.

Timeline:

• A student asked whether the attack should come in Saturn daśā. The teacher: Saturn, or Rahu, or Mars — because Mars is the dispositor of Saturn.
• Mars daśā started in 1989 — exactly when the drinking set in.
• Rahu daśā started in 1996 and runs to 2014. Health problems came in it.
• Rahu is the Ātmakāraka. Rahu is in the 11th house of the Rudrāṁśa — "that's where he will be attacked."

"Rahu plays a very important role here also. It is afflicting the 5th house, it is in the 11th house in Rudramsha, and it is also the Atmakaraka."

• "All these factors make sense more than the Leo rising."

Divisional Charts for Weakness and Addiction

A student asked about D-11. The teacher's answer:

• D-6, D-11 and D-30 are all used.
• An affliction to the Moon may not show clearly in the rāśi chart and show more clearly in the divisional chart. So look into the divisional chart. But it should be shown in the rāśi chart also.

Why the 6th and the 11th

• Jaimini: the 6th house and the 6th from the 6th are the two places where the person will be attacked and will pay the price.
• "These are the two most evil houses in any chart." Hence D-11 is very important.
• Why the 6th is the most evil for Parasara:
  1. It shows the ṣaḍripus, the weaknesses.
  2. It is an upachaya. It gives the strength to do whatever you want — good for growth, but it must not be misused or abused.
  3. It is māraka to the 5th house, your future.
• The 11th house is also māraka to the 5th.
• Friends and gains are at a very material level. Parasara was talking at a spiritual level, and at that level these are the houses through which you are attacked.

Rudrāṁśa Example

• If Venus is badly placed in D-11, the person has a weakness for women and will be troubled by a woman.

Moon's Position — Critical Rules

Moon in Evil Houses

A student asked: so Moon in the 6th means addiction is possible? The teacher: yes, Moon is afflicted in the 6th house.

• Moon in the 6th or 8th is very bad. The 12th also, but more so the 6th and 8th.
• 6th: very bad. 8th: maraṇa kāraka sthāna.
• Moon in the 11th is not bad as such. The 11th shows how the punishment comes.

"Moon shows nourishment. You take something that is so compassionate, which nurtures you, and you put it in a house where you have Mars and Saturn fighting. 6th house karakas, Mars and Saturn. It will kill that Moon."

• The teacher's own correction in the recap: "I didn't say addiction. It shows a weakness."

Take One Factor at a Time

• A student asked: does it matter whether the Moon is alone or with Jupiter or Mercury? The teacher: it doesn't matter. First, Moon is in the 6th house and comes under Mars and Saturn. Second, consider what planet it is with.
• In this chart Jupiter is sāttvik, which is good, but it is also the 6th lord.

"You take each and every factor one by one and apply that correction or filter. Do not jump."

Moon and Depression

• For depression the Moon must be afflicted very badly by Saturn or Mars, and/or be in signs owned by Saturn or Mars.
• In this chart it is not. The Moon's affliction here shows the addiction, not depression.
• The same combination is important for pravrajyā, renunciation: the person is totally frustrated with what goes on around him and takes recourse to spiritual activities.
• Moon in the 8th house is just one of the conditions. Not everybody who goes into depression has it.
