Example chart — spiritual practice (1966)

A student offered the chart of a woman he found interesting. The teacher first entered the 10th of the month, saw the Navāṁśa did not match what the student expected, and corrected the date to the 4th. The data is in the chart panel.

Navāṁśa

• The teacher first checked that there is no Ātmakāraka parivartana.
• Ātmakāraka is the Sun, in Gemini. Ketu is in Taurus, the 12th from him.
• Saturn, from Cancer, is the only planet aspecting Ketu. This is rāśi dṛṣṭi. A malefic influence.
• Still, it is Ketu in the 12th from the Ātmakāraka.

"There is a good chance that this person is spiritually advanced and quite close to liberation. And quite close doesn't mean 1 or 2 lives. It could mean tens of lives, or hundreds of lives. But that is still very close, believe me."

Rāśi chart

• Navāṁśa alone does not decide it. Look at the rāśi chart too.
• Lagna Scorpio. Lagna lord Ketu, the mokṣa kāraka, is in the 12th, the mokṣa sthāna, with the 8th lord Mercury.
• The Navāṁśa lagna is also Scorpio. There the 8th lord Mercury is in lagna with Rahu.
• Judgment: several powerful spiritual experiences and an awakening — out-of-body experiences, Kuṇḍalinī rising.
• The student confirmed this has already happened.

Never judge by appearance

• Without the daśās you cannot know when. A man may smoke and drink and look ordinary.
• When the right period comes someone gives him a mantra, and 108 repetitions do for him what a thousand a day have not done for another.

Whom should she pray to?

• Ketu in the 12th: normally Gaṇeśa.
• What Parāśara said, strictly, is: Ketu in the 12th with this planet — pray to this deity. He said "with". The teacher extends it to aspects.
• Ketu is in a sign of Venus and is influenced by Saturn. So the deity belongs to Ketu, Saturn or Venus. The teacher chooses Saturn.
• Saturn is in Cancer: Vishnu or an avatāra of Vishnu.
• His choice: Veda Nārāyaṇa — Nārāyaṇa as lord of the Vedas, connected with the Matsya avatāra. There is a temple of Veda Nārāyaṇa in the south.

"If she prays to Veda Narayana with a proper mantra, that will really take her to the final heights."

• He did not give the mantra. When the time comes someone will give it to her.

Viṁśāṁśa (D-20) and its Nārāyaṇa daśā

• D-20 lagna is Virgo. Rahu and Ketu are in the 12th, in Leo — Ketu is in the 12th here as in the rāśi chart.
• Scorpio daśā: its lord is in the 12th house. A period of experiences.
• Cancer daśā, 1999–2002: Cancer holds the 12th lord Sun, and its lord Moon is in the 8th. A very important period.
• Gemini daśā, running at the time of the class: Gemini is the 10th, with the 10th lord Mercury in it. She should not stay content with sādhana in a closed room. This is the time to do something for the world — advise people, give them the right literature, show them light.
• Aquarius daśā: its lord is in the 12th house, and Aquarius is the 3rd from the Āruḍha Lagna of D-20.

Why the 3rd from Āruḍha Lagna matters in D-20

• Āruḍha Lagna is the tangible identity. The 3rd from it is the loss of that identity — death.
• In samādhi, when Kuṇḍalinī reaches Sahasrāra, there is no boundary between the individual soul and the Supreme Soul. For that time the individual ego has ceased to exist.
• With Kuṇḍalinī at Anāhata a person knows his own soul and what it went through in past lives.
• A8, the āruḍha of the 8th house, is equally important for spiritual experience. Here A8 is in Leo, with Rahu and Ketu.
• So Aquarius will be a period of a strong urge to go further, much tapasya and some divine experiences.
• Cancer and Scorpio brought experiences. Gemini is the time to take it easy and help the spiritual progress of people around her.

Yogas

• The 9th lord Moon is exalted in a quadrant and is in Siṁhāsanāṁśa: an extremely strong sense of dharma. The teacher did not remember the exact result; he thought it was someone close to the level of a ṛṣi.
• No rāja yoga between two planets in Siṁhāsanāṁśa. No sannyāsa or pravrajyā yoga. No dharma-karmādhipati yoga.
• Moon and Jupiter, two trine lords, give two good yogas. One is Mṛdaṅga Yoga; the other name is not clear on the recording.
• Ubhayacarī Yoga: the two lagna lords, Mars and Ketu, sit on the two sides of the Sun.
• Some rāja-sambandha yogas and a viparīta yoga.
• The biggest is Lakṣmī Yoga. The 9th is the Lakṣmī sthāna. Jupiter, the 5th lord, is exalted in the 9th. Moon, the 9th lord, is exalted too. Two exalted trine lords connected with the 9th house, both in very good Vaiśeṣikāṁśas.

"She has the blessings of Sri Mahalakshmi. She gets good guidance. When she needs something, somebody will come and help her."

• Yogas are not everything. Read the combinations in the rāśi, Navāṁśa and Viṁśāṁśa.

Ṣaṣṭyāṁśa (D-60)

• Its accuracy here is not known: 38 seconds earlier and the D-60 lagna changes.
• A soul near mokṣa has to clear the imprints of painful experiences of past lives. She is likely to re-live them — the death experience and others — as dreams or waking visions.
• When she tells what she saw, D-60 can be rectified from it. Guideline: take the Āruḍha Lagna as lagna and see what she did in the past life.

A doubt left open

A student asked why the teacher checked for an Ātmakāraka parivartana first.

• If the Ātmakāraka exchanges signs with another planet, should mokṣa be judged from the original or the exchanged Ātmakāraka? The teacher has heard both and is not sure.
• He checked only to be sure this chart does not have that complication.

Physical Features and Attitude by Lagna and Planets

A student asked for the looks given by each lagna, for use in rectification.

How to learn it

• Read the classics — what Parāśara gave — and Dr. Raman's book.
• These are thumb rules. They are never fully reliable.
• Beyond the books, watch people. Know 20 people of each lagna and 20 with each planet in lagna.

"You can't express it in words, but you can get that understanding."

• The lagna of the rāśi chart has to do with the facial features.

By lagna sign — what was said in class

• Capricorn: Makara means crocodile. The person does not look like a crocodile, but there is some similarity.
• Cancer: logic does not work on them. A ten-page proof that they should not be sad will not make them happy. In a marital dispute with an analytical Aries-lagna husband — Mercury and Mars in lagna, proving point by point that he made no mistake — the teacher tells him at once: your wife is very sensitive and you are insensitive to her.
• Leo: even in someone else's house he decides how things are done. Even as a servant he has the air of a king. A big stomach is possible, but the rule is a stocky build.
• Libra: Tulā is the balance. It is hard to make them commit a faux pas.
• Scorpio: not as diplomatic as Libra, but they keep much hidden. Asked about two personalities: Scorpio has two lords, Mars and Ketu, so there are two Āruḍha Lagnas and the person can look different to different people. Lagna is the inherent personality; Āruḍha Lagna is how he seems to the world.
• Virgo: the teacher called himself a bad example, with too many influences on his lagna.

By planet in lagna or influencing lagna

• Saturn and hair: Saturn is the kāraka for hair. The rule holds when Saturn is in lagna, aspects lagna, is with the lagna lord or aspects the lagna lord. As a teenager helping his father, the teacher saw Saturn aspecting lagna from the 7th and said the native must have a lot of body hair. It was a daughter's chart, and the father was embarrassed.
• Saturn and patience: others give up after two months. Such a person says, "Only two months — I can try for two more years."
• Sun or Mars in lagna: much pitta, much heat in the body, so a chance of baldness. That is the tendency, not a certainty.
• Mercury: "He is a jack of all trades. He can fit in any role."
• Ketu: the teacher has guessed Ketu in lagna from a person's look and been right. Asked about the Ketu-like charm in a saint's eyes, he was not sure whether to expect Ketu in lagna or in the 2nd.
• When several planets influence the lagna, the result depends on who dominates.

A rectification that started from the face

• A colleague born in China had only a converted date and a window of three to four hours. The lagna could be Aries or Taurus.
• He had a big round head and an aggressive attitude. The teacher took Aries.
• Then the Navāṁśa was fixed from the marriage, the Drekkāṇa from the births of his brother and sister, and other divisions from career and education.
• The teacher then asked ten questions about the past. Seven were exactly right. Predictions made over the next seven years also came true.
• The higher divisions could be used only after the rāśi lagna was right.

"You will be wrong, of course. I was wrong, and I was not ashamed to be wrong, and I kept trying, and after that I started becoming right."

• After rectifying from five or six events, you should be able to tell other past events. Predictions are confirmed only after a long time; the past can be checked now.

Where this helps and where it does not

• It helps when the lagna is on a border — Virgo or Libra, Scorpio or Sagittarius.
• It does not help when nothing is known. Big eyes and a beautiful face suggest Venus, but Venus may be in lagna, aspect lagna, be with the lagna lord or aspect him. That leaves four or five lagnas out of twelve.

"Many times when you see the attitude of the person and the physical features of the person, you can reasonably guess the lagna."
