BPHS Ch.24 — Lagna Lord in Houses 4–6 (Parents, Children's Risk, Siddhi-Fighter) & Lagna Vimshottari: 30× More Sensitive, Best for Rectification

Lagna Lord in the Fourth, Fifth and Sixth Houses (BPHS Ch. 24)

Lagna Lord in the 4th House

Verse: happiness from mother and father; bahu-bhrātṛ-yuta (many siblings); kāmī (full of desire); guṇa-rūpa-samanvita (virtuous and good-looking).

• Mother and father: the 4th is mother, and the intelligence is on her. Father: Parāśara in places sees the father from the 10th (the 7th from the 4th, the mother's husband). The lagna lord in the 4th aspects the 10th.
• Many siblings: the 3rd is younger siblings (the 11th elder). The 4th is the 2nd from the 3rd — the argala of resources on the house of siblings.
• Kāmī: the same argala falls on the 3rd as the house of desire. And the 4th is comfort: his intelligence is on "how can I be happy".
• Good looks:
  • A planet in the 4th has the 4th-house (sukha, "driving") argala on lagna. That is one factor, not enough alone.
  • Arudha Lagna: the 4th from the 4th is the 7th. An ārūḍha cannot be in the 1st or 7th from its house, so take the 10th from the 7th: the 4th. AL is in the 4th house itself, and the lagna lord is in AL.
  • Looks belong to the image. Lagna is the actual self, which nobody sees; what people experience of a person is the houses from AL.

"In general, Arudha Lagna is key for seeing the looks of the person."

• Whether the looks are good or bad depends on the planet.

Lagna Lord in the 5th House

Verse: suta-saukhyaṁ cha madhyamam (happiness from children is middling); prathamāpatya-nāśa (loss of the first child).

• Parāśara says jantu here — literally "animal" — where elsewhere he says native or person. The teacher's reading: he does not waste a word; this teaching holds for the horoscopes of animals too.
• Why middling: to fix the intelligence on your own valour, wealth or comfort is natural. To fix it on the child shows some concern there. Intelligence on the mother is affinity — you are not responsible for her. For the next generation you are responsible.
  • "If somebody comes to me and says, can you please take a look at my child's chart, 90% of those cases" there is a worry: the child is not getting married, or does not listen.
  • It can equally be the doting father who talks of nothing but his child's marks. Parāśara does not rule that out.
• Why loss of the first child — three links:
  1. The lagna lord in the 5th has argala on the 4th, the 12th (loss) from the 5th.
  2. The 7th from the 5th, the 11th house, is the māraka sthāna of the child, and the lagna lord aspects it.
  3. The 9th shows the last rites. The 9th from the 5th is lagna, so the lagna lord is the lord of the child's last rites, sitting in the house of the child.
  • The same link can show a parent concerned with the child's dharma. This is one possible result out of many.
• You would be tempted to call the 5th lord in the 5th lucky for children. Do not assume their well-being is ensured.
• If the lagna lord is in the 5th and the 5th lord is with Jupiter in a kendra, there is no problem.

Lagna Lord in the 6th House

Verse: without comfort of the body; pāpāḍhye śatrutaḥ pīḍā saumya-dṛṣṭi-vivarjite — trouble from enemies if he is joined by malefics and no benefic aspects him. The teacher reads this as association with functional malefics and no aspect of natural benefics.

• The 6th is the house of fights, obstacles and overcoming them. Intelligence directed at overcoming obstacles means there are obstacles.
• If the planet is strong and other combinations support it, he is a fighter: "push him to a corner, he can rise like a phoenix".

"You are always thinking, okay, what should I do next? How should I counter that? … So there is no peace of mind."

• The 6th has the 4th-house (driving) argala on the 3rd house of initiative.
• The 6th is the 11th from the 8th: it catalyses the 8th house — anxiety, tension, worry.
• The 8th is also hard work and sādhana. So the 6th shows the fructification of sādhana and is counted among the houses of siddhis.
• The verse brings out the bad side; every house has both.

Lagna Vimshottari — When to Use It and How Far to Trust the Dates

This comes up while choosing the daśā for the example chart of Part 5 (Cancer lagna, Moon in Taurus).

Choosing the daśā

• First check the conditional daśās. Lagna lord in the 7th? 7th lord in lagna? 10th lord in the 10th? Sun in lagna? None applies here, so Vimshottari.
• The native himself points out that lagna is stronger than Moon. Then Vimshottari can be started from lagna instead of Moon.
• The software's seed-strength comparison: planets in kendras from Moon (Moon excluded) = 2; from lagna = 5. Moon is exalted, but lagna itself holds three planets. Lagna is stronger.
• Moon is the default and everybody uses it. Why take the trouble: for an event such as marriage there may be five candidate planets. With the correct daśā the strongest candidate gives the result; with a weaker daśā one of the weak candidates gives it.

"If you want to be clear, you better use what is likely to work better."

Sensitivity to birth time

• Moon Vimshottari thumb rule: if the birth time is off by m minutes and the first daśā is n years long, every date shifts by about m × n ÷ 4 days. Only the first daśā matters, because that is where the balance at birth is computed.
• Here the first daśā is Mercury, 17 years. One minute of error = 17 ÷ 4 ≈ 4¼ days. Five minutes ≈ 20 days.
• Moon takes about a month to go round the zodiac; lagna takes a day. Lagna moves 30 times faster, so Lagna Vimshottari is 30 times more sensitive: one minute ≈ 4 × 30 = 120 days, four months.
• With a time rectified to the minute, Moon Vimshottari is off by ten days at most. Lagna Vimshottari can be off by months.

"Be careful with Lagna Vimshottari. You may be bitten by it. Don't be too specific unless you are sure."

Checking the dates on a known event

• The software starts the native's Mars daśā on 24 July 2008, ten days after the class. Can that date be trusted? Test it on his marriage: 7 December 1989.
• Lagna Vimshottari on that day: Venus–Mercury, near the end of Moon pratyantara (which the software begins on 29 September 1989).
  • Venus: lord of the Upapada, kāraka of marriage, in the 9th of navāṁśa with Ketu.
  • Mercury: 9th lord of navāṁśa, giving Harṣa yoga there (6th lord in the 6th).
  • Moon: 7th lord of navāṁśa in the 3rd; in the 8th from the Upapada; lord of the 11th and placed in the 7th from Venus in navāṁśa. A perfect candidate. Mars and Sun, the neighbouring pratyantaras, are weak candidates.
• The teacher had expected to have to shift everything by a couple of months. No shift is needed. What the event proves: the dates may move forward by up to a couple of months, but not backward by more than a couple of weeks.
• Do the same with other events (he suggests the move abroad in the chaturthāṁśa) and the window closes.

"Lagna Vimshottari is actually a great tool in rectifying the time."

• Moon Vimshottari cannot do this; there only the divisional lagnas help. With Lagna Vimshottari the pratyantaras of several events can fix the time "very accurately up to seconds". Left to the class as an exercise.
