BPHS Ch.30 Final: Mercury in AL = King Over All Territories (Sarva-Desha-Adhika); Jupiter in AL = All-Knowing (Sarvajna); Venus in AL = Poet+Orator (Kavi-Vadi); Functional Benefic in 2nd from UL/AL = All Wealth+Intelligence; 2nd from 7th Lord from UL: Rahu=Big Teeth, Ketu=Halting Speech, Saturn=Ugly

Three planets in Arudha Lagna: Mercury (Saumya) = Sarva-desha-adhika = "king over all territories; powerful, materially successful, controls resources." Jupiter (Deveja = teacher of gods) = Sarvajna = "all-knowing, supremely learned." Venus (Bhargava) = Kavi-vadi = "poet + eloquent debater/orator." How we know Saumya = Mercury (not benefics generally): verse gives Jupiter's result separately, so Saumya must mean Mercury specifically. Functional benefic in 2nd from UL OR AL: Sarvadravyahipo (all material wealth) + Dhiman (highly intelligent). "Upada is not just marriage — it is also overall status in society. Both Upada and AL seen together to judge success." 2nd lord from UL in 2nd from UL + conjunct functional malefic: Caura = "thief; interpret broadly = success achieved but money earned through impure means; some evils committed on the way." 2nd from 7th lord from UL: "7th from UL = how one interacts in marriage; 7th lord = intelligence behind that; 2nd from that lord = food that nourishes or poisons the interaction." Rahu there = Nastravan (big/protruding teeth, off-putting); Ketu = Stabdha-vak (halting speech, stammering); Saturn = Kurupa (bad-looking). Good planets = good qualities attracting spouse. "Each planet signifies some quality that either nourishes or depletes the marital interaction." Parashara only stated bad results, leaving good planets for deduction. Chapter 30 complete.

"Mercury in Arudha Lagna gives Sarva-desha-adhika — a king over all territories, controlling all resources. Jupiter in Arudha Lagna gives Sarvajna — all-knowing, supremely learned. Venus gives Kavi-vadi — a poet or brilliant debater. We know Saumya here must mean Mercury specifically, because Parashara separately stated Jupiter's result in the very next line. If Saumya meant all benefics, Jupiter would already be included."

— P.V.R. Narasimha Rao

BPHS Ch.30 — Mercury / Jupiter / Venus in Arudha Lagna

Verse: "Arudhe samsthite saumye sarvadeshadhiko bhavet / sarvajna tatra deveja kavir vadi cha bhargave"

Three planets and their gifts in AL:

PlanetSanskrit TermResult
Mercury (Saumya)Sarva-desha-adhikaKing over all territories; powerful, materially successful, controls resources
Jupiter (Deveja = teacher of gods)SarvajnaAll-knowing, supremely learned, knowledgeable person
Venus (Bhargava)Kavi-vadiPoet + eloquent debater/orator

How we know Saumya = Mercury (not benefics in general):

  • The verse gives Jupiter's result separately in the 2nd line (if it meant "all benefics," Jupiter would be included in Saumya)
  • Therefore, the 1st line must refer specifically to Mercury

Why Mercury for power (not Sun)?:

  • Natural benefic Mercury in AL shows someone with powerful image/material success
  • Mercury is also the karaka for speech → eloquence is also from Mercury
  • But here Parashara classified them differently: Mercury = power, Venus = oratory
  • PVNR: "Just because he classified them this way doesn't mean they are strictly separated. Venus being Rajasic can also show force of speech. Mercury can also give eloquence."

BPHS Ch.30 — Functional Benefic in 2nd from UL or AL

Verse: "Uparudhat paradvaapi dhanasthe subhakhechare / sarvadravyahipo dhiman jayate…"

Either from UL or from Arudha Lagna: If there is a functional benefic (shubhakhechara) in the 2nd house from either, the native will be:

  • Sarvadravyahipo — possessing all kinds of material wealth and property
  • Dhiman — highly intelligent

"Having a functional benefic in the 2nd house from Upada or Arudha Lagna is a great blessing."

— PVNR

Teaching extension:

"Upada is not just marriage. It is also your overall status in society. Who you marry reflects your status. So both Upada and Arudha Lagna should be seen together to judge how successful a person is."

— PVNR

BPHS Ch.30 — 2nd Lord of UL in Own 2nd House + Malefic → Thief

Verse: "Uparudha-sthanadhi-dye dvitiye bhava-nasthite / papakechara-samyukte cauro bhavati nishchitam"

Condition: The 2nd lord from UL is placed in the 2nd house itself from UL AND conjunct with a functional malefic planet

Result: Thief (Caura) — but interpret broadly:

"Don't take it literally as a thief. The lesson is: success is achieved, but because of malefic influence, the money is not earned in a straightforward way. Some evils committed, some sins on the way."

— PVNR

Context: Success (2nd lord in own 2nd) + malefic (compromised method) = impure wealth, ill-gotten or irregular.

BPHS Ch.30 — 2nd from 7th Lord from UL (Physical/Speech Traits)

Method: From UL → take 7th house → find its lord → from where that lord sits → take 2nd house from it → examine planets there

Results by planet:

Planet in 2nd from 7th lord from ULResult
RahuNastravan (big/protruding teeth, almost like fangs)
KetuStabdha-vak (slow/halting speech; stammering; unable to express fluently)
SaturnKurupa (bad-looking, ugly appearance)
Mixed planetsMix of the respective results
Jupiter (implied)Knowledge/wisdom of the person; attracts spouse through intellect

Why this position?:

"What is 7th from UL? How one interacts in the marital life. What is 7th lord? The intelligence behind that interaction. What is 2nd from that lord? The food for that interaction — what nourishes or poisons the interaction."

— PVNR

"This position controls how the spouse views you and whether they are attracted to or repelled by you. Big teeth may put off a spouse; knowledge of a person may attract a spouse. Each planet signifies some quality that either nourishes or depletes the interaction."

— PVNR

Parashara's disclaimer: Only gave bad results for 3 planets, then said "mixed planets = mixed results" implying good planets in that position will give good results (not specified, left for deduction).

Chapter 30 Ends Here

"With this, we have finished Chapter 30 in BPHS. From the next class, we have to decide which chapter to continue."

— PVNR
