Viprita Argala, Nirabhasa, Subhargala vs Papargala, Functional Nature Quality & Argala on All Trines

Viprita Argala: when badha (obstruction) sthana has 3+ malefics, the obstruction FLIPS and becomes promotion instead — "too much pressure building up and breaking through." Nirabhasa Argala = pure, unobstructed Argala (no planets or fewer in badha sthana) = full, clean result. Subhargala vs Papargala determined by WHICH HOUSE receives the Argala, NOT which planet causes it: Argala on a kendra/trikona = Subhargala (auspicious); Argala on a dusthana (6/8/12) = Papargala (inauspicious); even malefics causing Argala on lagna = Subhargala; even benefics causing Argala on 8th = Papargala. Quality of Argala by functional nature: functional benefic = full Argala (100%); functional malefic = half Argala (50%); neutral = full (like benefic). "Malefics don't give zero — they give half; do not ignore them." Argala on all three trikonas simultaneously (1st+5th+9th): extremely fortunate, "like a king" — triple lock on dharma dimension. Reference point priority (Parashara's order): Pada (Arudha Lagna) first → Lagna → 10th house. "Parashara says Pada first — not accidental; strong Argala on AL = very famous and recognized."

"Parashara puts Pada — the Arudha Lagna — first among the reference points for Argala. He is telling us: the world sees the Arudha. Strong Argala on the Arudha means you are famous, widely recognized."

— P.V.R. Narasimha Rao

Viprita Argala — Inversion of Obstruction

Viprita Argala (Obstructed Argala becoming Promotion):

Condition: When the obstruction (badha) sthana has 3 or more malefics

  • Normally: malefics in the obstruction sthana block the Argala
  • With 3+ malefics in obstruction sthana: the obstruction flips — it now promotes the Argala instead of blocking it
  • Called Viprita Argala ("reversed Argala" = obstruction that promotes)

"When too many malefics pile up in the obstruction house, they become so powerful that they actually push — like too much pressure building up and then breaking through. Viprita becomes a strength."

Nirabhasa Argala — Pure, Unobstructed Argala

Nirabhasa Argala = Argala that has no obstruction at all

  • No planets (or fewer planets) in the badha sthana
  • The full effect of the Argala manifests
  • "Nirabhasa = without blemish; the Argala is clean and unobstructed"

Subhargala vs Papargala

TypeConditionEffect
Subhargala (auspicious)Argala is on an auspicious house from lagna/referenceGood results locked in
Papargala (inauspicious)Argala is on an inauspicious house (dusthana)Trouble locked in; hard to escape

Critical distinction: The type (Subha vs Papa) depends on WHICH HOUSE the Argala falls on — NOT on which planet causes the Argala.

  • Example: 4 malefics in 4th house → their Argala is on the 1st house (lagna) — this is Subhargala (Argala on 1st = good house)
  • Same malefics causing Argala on the 8th house → Papargala

"Do not confuse this. Even a benefic causing Argala on a dusthana (6/8/12) is Papargala. And even malefics causing Argala on a kendra or trikona = Subhargala. The house receiving Argala determines the quality."

Quality of Argala — Functional Nature Applies

  • The functional nature of the planet (benefic or malefic for the specific lagna) determines how the Argala manifests qualitatively
  • Natural malefic but functional benefic → Argala gives mostly good results
  • Natural benefic but functional malefic → Argala gives problems

Quantum of Argala (how much the planet contributes):

Planet TypeArgala Contribution
Benefic (functional)Full Argala (100%)
Malefic (functional)Half Argala (50%)
Neutral (functional)Full (like benefic)

"Malefics don't give zero Argala — they give half. So even malefics contribute, but less. Neutrals are treated like benefics."

Argala on Trikonas — Royal Yoga

Special rule: If a planet has strong Argala on all three trines simultaneously (1st, 5th, and 9th houses):

  • The native becomes extremely fortunate, "like a king"
  • Trikona = dharma houses (fortune, past-life merit); Argala on all three = triple lock on fortune

"This is a very rare and powerful combination. Argala on all trines — 1st, 5th, 9th — at once. The person is blessed from all dharma angles."

Most Important Reference Points for Argala

Parashara's order of priority (from his shlokas):

  1. Pada (Arudha Lagna) — mentioned FIRST by Parashara
  2. Lagna (Ascendant)
  3. 10th house (Dasamsha, career)

"Notice that Parashara says Pada (Arudha Lagna) first. This is not accidental — Parashara is telling us that the Arudha is the most important reference for Argala analysis. The Arudha is the material manifestation, the image in the world. Strong Argala on the Arudha = very famous and recognized."

Practical priority:

  • Strong Argala on AL (Arudha Lagna) → very famous, widely recognized
  • Strong Argala on 10th house → excellent career, prominent position
  • Strong Argala on Lagna → strong personality, healthy body, good longevity
