FoundationsTiming & Dashas

Amsa-Amsa Principle: Navamsa Within Any Divisional Chart = Blessings in That Life Area (D81=D9ofD9, D108=D9ofD12, D144=D9ofD16); Nakshatra Dasha Selection: ONLY Moon Hora+Sukla Paksha=Vimshottari; All Others=Shodashottari; Hora Determination: Male Sign(1st Half=Surya, 2nd Half=Chandra); Female Sign(1st Half=Chandra, 2nd Half=Surya)

Amsa-amsa principle (extending sub-divisional chart technique): "Parashara mentions Navamsa most frequently in conjunction with the Rasi chart — this has led people to think Rasi and Navamsa are the only charts. But what it really means is: Rasi + Navamsa can be applied to ANY divisional chart." Application: take any divisional chart (D10, D20, D24, D4) as the main chart; find the Navamsa within that divisional chart (amsa-amsa); resulting Navamsa shows blessings in that area of life. Standard amsa-amsa charts used in tradition: D81 = Navamsa of Navamsa (blessings in marriage/destiny area); D108 = Navamsa of Dvadasamsa (blessings in father/ancestors area); D144 = Navamsa of Shodasamsa (blessings in vehicles/comforts area). Examples already used: D24×D9 = blessings in education; D4×D9 = blessings in residence/travel abroad. Nakshatra Dasha selection for divisional charts (Lonsha's classification): only ONE combination = Vimshottari (108-year): Moon Hora + Sukla Paksha (bright/waxing fortnight). All other combinations = Shodashottari (97-year, also called "short" dasha): Moon Hora + Krishna Paksha, Surya Hora + Krishna Paksha, Surya Hora + Sukla Paksha. "To find divisional chart Nakshatra Dasha: treat divisional chart as Rasi, find Moon position in it, determine Hora and Paksha, apply selection rule." Hora determination: male sign (Aries/Gemini/Leo/Libra/Sag/Aquarius) = first half of sign = Surya Hora, second half = Chandra Hora; female sign (Taurus/Cancer/Virgo/Scorpio/Cap/Pisces) = first half = Chandra Hora, second half = Surya Hora. This system applies when calculating Nakshatra Dasha in divisional charts; further conditions (lagna in Virgo, special nakshatra) can modify selection.

"Parashara mentions Navamsa in conjunction with the Rasi chart, and that has made people think those are the only two charts. But the real principle is: Rasi and Navamsa can be applied to any divisional chart. Take the Dasamsa as your main chart; find the Navamsa within it. That gives blessings in the area of career. D24×D9 gives blessings in education. D4×D9 gives blessings in residence. The tradition already had D81 and D108 and D144 — they knew this all along."

Amsa-Amsa Principle — Navamsa Within Any Divisional Chart

Key teaching (extending from lesson-186/188):

"Parashara mentions Navamsa most frequently in conjunction with the Rasi chart — this has led people to think Rasi and Navamsa are the only charts. But what it really means is: Rasi + Navamsa can be applied to ANY divisional chart."

— PVNR

Application:

  • Take any divisional chart (D10, D20, D24, D4, etc.) as the "Rasi" (main chart)
  • Find the Navamsa within that divisional chart (amsa-amsa)
  • The resulting Navamsa shows blessings in that area of life
  • Standard amsa-amsa charts used in tradition: D81 (Navamsa of Navamsa), D108 (Navamsa of Dwadasamsa), D144 (Navamsa of Shodasamsa)

Example: D24/D9 = blessings in education; D4/D9 = blessings in residence/travel abroad

Nakshatra Dasha Selection for Divisional Charts

System used (following Lonsha's classification):

HoraPakshaDasha Type
Chandra Hora (Moon Hora)Sukla Paksha (bright)Vimshottari (108-year)
Chandra HoraKrishna Paksha (dark)Shodashottari / short
Surya Hora (Sun Hora)Krishna PakshaShodashottari / short
Surya HoraSukla PakshaShodashottari / short
  • Only: Moon Hora + Sukla Paksha = Vimshottari
  • All other combinations = Shodashottari (also called "short" dasha, 97-year cycle)
  • Further conditions can modify this (e.g., lagna in Virgo, special nakshatra conditions)
  • This applies when finding Nakshatra Dasha in divisional charts (treat divisional chart as Rasi, find Moon position, apply dasha selection rules)

Lagna determination for Hora:

  • Male sign: first half = Surya Hora, second half = Chandra Hora
  • Female sign: first half = Chandra Hora, second half = Surya Hora
