George W. Bush — Birth Data and the Natal Base

Natal Placements Used in Class

• Saturn (7th lord), Mercury and Venus in lagna in Cancer.
• Moon (lagna lord) and Jupiter (6th and 9th lord) together in Virgo, the 3rd house.
• Sun (2nd lord) in Gemini, the 12th house. Mars (5th and 10th lord, yogakaraka) in Leo, the 2nd.
• Rahu in Taurus, the 11th house. Ketu in Scorpio.
• AL and Ghati Lagna are both in Scorpio. A11 is in Virgo with Moon and Jupiter.
• Daśāṁśa (D-10): Cancer lagna. Mars (10th lord) exalted and Jupiter (6th lord) debilitated, both in Capricorn. Sun in Sagittarius.

The Base Comes First

• Before reading any annual chart, read the natal chart and its daśā. "Tithi Pravesha is like a ripple on that base. Unless you know whether the base is here or here, you don't know what the ripple actually shows."
• So ups and downs seen in an annual chart are taken "with a pinch of salt" when the natal daśā is strong.

Dwisaptati Sama Daśā

• If the 7th lord is in the 1st house, or the 1st lord is in the 7th, use Dwisaptati Sama daśā instead of Vimshottari. Bush has 7th lord Saturn in lagna.
• Jupiter daśā: April 2000 – April 2009, nine years. He became a candidate around April 2000; the election was in November 2000.

Why Jupiter Daśā Is a Great Daśā

• Rāśi: Jupiter (9th lord) is with the lagna lord Moon. This is a raja yoga, and it is Gajakesari yoga — long-lasting fame. He does things for which he is remembered for a long time, "in a good way or bad way". PVNR also calls it a Lakshmi yoga, since the 9th lord and lagna lord are joined.
• Daśāṁśa: 6th lord debilitated and 10th lord exalted is Jaya yoga — happy, successful, victorious over enemies, long-lived. Mars and Jupiter give it.
• Jupiter is the common thread of both yogas.

"Raj yoga in the Rasi chart — at the physical level he is enjoying a lot of success and comfort — and in the professional environment he is enjoying victory over enemies. So such excellent yogas are functioning during Jupiter dasha."

• The 9th house Pisces is the house of protection. It is the 5th house (power) from both AL and Ghati Lagna, and Jupiter aspects it by graha dṛṣṭi. So Jupiter-like people — religious people, judges — are always good for his power. "Even if his career is almost dead, it will be resurrected by this Jupiter dasha."
• In the navāṁśa too Jupiter is well placed: 5th lord in the 10th.
• The one weakness: Jupiter is in the 3rd house, his marana karaka sthana. He owns the 6th (enemies) and the 9th (father). One of the two is crushed during this daśā: either his enemies are destroyed, or something bad happens to the father.
• The next daśā, Venus, is "totally different".

Antardaśās of Jupiter Daśā — Bhoga

How to Find Bhoga

• Bhoga is what is experienced in a sub-period.
• Count houses from the daśā lord to the antardaśā lord. Count the same number from the antardaśā lord. The house reached is the bhoga of that antardaśā.
• The antardaśā lord's own placement shows his agenda. The bhoga shows what is finally experienced on the ground.
• Before the 2004 election Sanjay Rath argued that Sun in the 12th meant Bush would lose. PVNR's answer: "what you experience is from the bhoga."

Jupiter–Sun (October 2004 – December 2005)

• Sun is the 2nd lord in the 12th house. The 12th is marana karaka sthana for Sun.
• 2nd lord in MKS: he looks as if he ran out of fuel, out of resources, out of ideas. Sun is the planet of power, so there is some loss of authority.
• Bhoga in rāśi: from Jupiter (Virgo) Sun (Gemini) is 10th. The 10th from Sun is Pisces, the 9th house. He experiences fortune.
• Bhoga in daśāṁśa: from Jupiter (Capricorn) Sun (Sagittarius) is 12th. The 12th from Sun is Scorpio, the 5th house of power.
• So he does not go out of power. He won re-election in this antardaśā. But Sun's own agenda also comes out: this is a relative low inside a good daśā, and nothing came easily.

Daśā Lord and Antardaśā Lord — Who Listens to Whom

• When the antardaśā lord's agenda conflicts with what the daśā lord wants, their relationship decides.
• Friends (Jupiter–Sun, Jupiter–Moon): the antardaśā lord balances both, and does more of what the daśā lord wants.
• Enemies (say Jupiter daśā, Rahu antardaśā): the antardaśā lord may ignore the daśā lord and do what he wants.

Jupiter–Moon (from about December 8, 2005, for 13 months and some days)

• The date can be off by a couple of weeks: in a long daśā cycle, a few seconds of birth-time error moves the dates.
• Bhoga in rāśi: Moon is with Jupiter, so the bhoga is the 3rd house itself — a lot of initiative. In daśāṁśa the bhoga is again the 5th house.
• More important: the Gajakesari yoga in the rāśi chart starts functioning. 9th lord and lagna lord together, with A11, in the 11th from AL — his image gains.
• "The best time of the dasha hasn't come yet." Election and re-election came in relatively minor antardaśās.
• Something big happens in this period for which he is remembered for a long time. It comes out of fortune (9th house, Jupiter): deserved from past life, not from what he did in this one.
• Moon and Jupiter are planets of peace and can make him look like a visionary. PVNR's guess: some progress toward peace somewhere, Israel more likely than Kashmir. "I am just guessing."
• Parallels: Saddam Hussein's capture, which sent Bush's ratings up overnight without changing anything on the ground; and Reagan, disliked as a hardliner until the Soviet Union's fall remade his image.

Jupiter–Mars (January 2007 – March 2008)

• In the rāśi chart Mars is the yogakaraka.
• Take Jupiter as lagna (Virgo): Mars is the 3rd and 8th lord, placed in the 12th from Jupiter (Leo). A dusthana lord in another dusthana — Vipareeta Raja yoga.
• Bhoga: 12th from Mars is Cancer, the lagna — a trine as well as a quadrant.
• In daśāṁśa the Jaya yoga of Mars and Jupiter operates. Debilitated 6th lord: the enemies are sad. Exalted 10th lord: he achieves what he wanted.
• So 2007 is not a peacemaker's year. PVNR expects "one final blow" to an enemy — some war or limited war. He names no country.
• Supporting transit: Saturn and Ketu join in Leo in 2007; the economy looks bad that year.

Rahu in the 11th House — a Student's Question

A student asked whether natal Rahu in the 11th is good, since Rahu spoils the house he sits in.

• A planet placed in the 11th is told: fulfil his desires. Whether he does depends on his own agenda.
• Even with a bad agenda, he will do it — unwillingly, perhaps half — if the lord of the house is his friend. If the lord is an enemy, he does what he likes.
• The karaka counts as well. The lord of the house is a group manager: everyone sitting in his house is under him. The karaka is the project manager: he answers for the result. Planets aspecting the house are people from other groups who want a say in the project.
• Here Venus is the lord of Taurus and a significator of the 11th, he is Rahu's friend, and he sits in lagna in Moon's sign. Jupiter aspects Rahu by his 9th aspect, and Venus aspects him by rāśi dṛṣṭi.
• Rahu is the 8th lord and wants to give anxiety and trouble. He does so only to a limited extent, and fulfils many desires.
• "No factor can be judged in isolation."

The 2005–06 Annual Chart (Tithi Praveśa) — Rāśi

Chart

• Hora lord Mercury — the ruler of the year.
• Lagna Scorpio. Moon in Libra (12th). Sun in Gemini (8th). Saturn, Venus and Mercury in Cancer (9th). Mars and Rahu in Pisces (5th). Jupiter and Ketu in Virgo (11th).
• Ārūḍhas (worked from these placements): AL in Cancer, A10 in Aries (6th), A8 in Leo (10th), A6 in Aquarius (4th), A7 in Virgo (11th), A11 in Taurus (7th).

Lagna and Moon

• Lagna is how you act on the world. Moon is how you take the world in and perceive it.
• Scorpio lagna shows something hidden or secretive in how he acts this year — not in how he perceives.

Badhakesha Moon in the 12th — and the Parivartana

• Scorpio is a fixed sign, so the 9th house is the badhakasthana and its lord Moon is the badhakesha.
• Badhaka means inexplicable problems that come suddenly and cannot be diagnosed. The classics tie troubles from spirits to the badhakesha.
• Badhakesha in the 12th shows losing the badha. That is good.
• But Moon (in Libra) and Venus (in Cancer) exchange signs — a parivartana between the 9th and 12th houses. Moon gives results as though he is in Cancer: badhakesha in badhakasthana.
• So the benefit is lost. Unseen troubles continue to come.

Saturn and Venus in the 9th — Effort, Not Fruit

• Saturn (4th lord) and Venus (7th lord) are together in the 9th. Two quadrant lords joined show the effort he puts in, in the house of dharma.
• Fruits need a quadrant lord with a trine lord. That is not here. The Cancer group is not a raja yoga.
• The yogas are on the Virgo–Pisces axis: Mars, Rahu, Jupiter and Ketu are quadrant and trine lords.

Ārūḍha Padas Are Tangibles

• A house is intangible and hidden in the person. Its ārūḍha is the tangible thing people can see.
• The 5th from lagna is my ability. The 5th from AL is how capable people think I am. A5 is neither: it is the article on the ground — an Oscar, a certificate, a top score — which people use in forming their impressions.
• An ārūḍha in a trine: those matters manifest effortlessly, as a blessing from the past. In a quadrant: a lot of effort goes into them. In the 6th, 8th or 12th: they manifest with difficulty and opposition.
• An ārūḍha is never in its own house or the 7th from it; when the count lands there, take the 10th from it. So A6 can never be in the 6th.
• An ārūḍha in the 2nd or 7th is not "killed". Those houses only make their lord a maraka.

A10 in the 6th

• The 10th house is the work he does, intangible. A10 is the tangible work: the speeches, the statements, the laws he tries to pass.
• A10 is in the 6th house. Everything he does this year meets obstacles and opposition.

The 10th House Hammered by the 8th

• Gulika and Mandi, Saturn's sons, are in the 10th.
• A8 is in the 10th. A8 is the mrityu pada; wherever it falls, that house sees death-like situations.
• The 10th lord could rescue the house, but Sun is in the 8th. Mercury would do well in the 8th. Sun hates it: "Sun is the king. He just wants to sit on his simhasana and have everything taken care of."
• Result: ups and downs in his work, more downs than ups, many setbacks.

A6 in the 4th

• The 6th house is the obstacles as felt inside. A6 is the tangible fight: the quarrel that reaches the newspapers, the rivalry people can see.
• A6 in a quadrant: he puts a lot of effort into fights — a waste, since A6 is the ārūḍha of a dusthana.
• A6 in the 4th house of sukha: his happiness is robbed. The wars meant are those in Washington.
• A student objected: fighting is not losing. Correct — who wins is a separate question.

Who Wins — AL Against A6

AL is your image. A6 is the image of your enemies. Judge the chart from each.

• In AL: good planets give a good image, bad planets a bad one.
• 2nd from AL: the food of the image. Jupiter, Mercury or another benefic there feeds the image. Saturn, Mars or Rahu there spoils it.
• 3rd and 6th from AL: benefics show giving up; malefics show fighting hard and winning. The 3rd is only initiative. The 6th is the final overcoming and matters most.
• Judge these by the inherent nature of the sign, its occupants and its aspectors. Forget lordship. Jupiter aspecting the 6th from AL fights the Jupiterian way — "I give up, you win" — whether or not he is a maraka.
• Rāśi dṛṣṭi matters more than graha dṛṣṭi here.

From AL (Cancer):

• The 6th is Sagittarius: empty, a benefic sign. By rāśi dṛṣṭi it is aspected by Sun (Gemini), Jupiter and Ketu (Virgo), Mars and Rahu (Pisces). Except Jupiter, all malefics.
• The 3rd, Virgo, is under the same influences.
• Mars pursues the enemy aggressively. Rahu goes as far as cheating and shocking them.
• For materially winning this is auspicious.

From A6 (Aquarius):

• The 2nd, Pisces, has Mars and Rahu. That combination in the 2nd from any ārūḍha ruins it. His enemies appear as "aggressive fools" without judgment.
• The 3rd, Aries, is empty; go by the sign. A malefic sign: they appear bold and full of initiative.
• The 6th, Cancer, has Venus, Mercury and Saturn. Two benefics against one malefic: they start with a jump and then let things go. They look like losers, and Bush looks like the winner.
• The polls say otherwise at the time of the class. It shows when the right period comes.

Which Side Mercury Takes

• Mercury acts as a benefic with benefics and as a malefic with malefics.
• With equal numbers he sides with the stronger planet: one that is exalted, in moolatrikona or in own sign.
• If none stands out, he sides with whoever is closer. Here Mercury is at 23°, Venus at 26°, Saturn far off at 5°.
• Venus, being in exchange with Moon, acts almost as if in his own house, so he is the stronger one too. Mercury is a benefic here.

Good or Bad Depends on Deśa, Kāla, Pātra

• Malefics on the 6th from AL are good for a politician with enemies "to crush or be crushed by". For a saint the same thing spoils the image.
• Ārūḍhas are māyā. Judge them by the place and culture, the age, and the nature of the person.

A7 in the 11th

• The 7th house is how he feels in his interactions. A7 is the visible side: the kind of people he is seen dealing with.
• The 11th is the house of fulfilment of desires. Any ārūḍha there brings fulfilment in its matters.
• A7 is in Virgo with Jupiter and Ketu, aspected by Mars: intelligent, analytical friends; religious and evangelical people; judges; and they are aggressive and calculating. They help him get done what he wants this year.

A11 in the 7th

• Winning over enemies is still not the same as getting what he wanted. For that see the 11th house and A11.
• Taurus is an auspicious sign, and its lord Venus is a natural significator of the 11th house of gains.
• A11 is in Taurus, a quadrant. With effort his desires are fulfilled, and the gains are tangible — a milestone in Iraq or in the Israel peace process, when the right period comes.

"It's not a yes or no thing. You may fight, you may win, but still you may not be happy. Understand the exact meaning of each factor, then put all of them together."

The 2005–06 Annual Chart — Daśāṁśa and the Periods of the Year

Chart

• Annual daśāṁśa: Sagittarius lagna. Mars in Leo (9th). Moon, Mercury and Jupiter in Libra (11th). Venus in Scorpio (12th). Saturn in Aries (5th). Rahu in Cancer (8th). Ketu in Capricorn (2nd). Sun in Pisces (4th).
• AL is in Leo, with Mars in it.
• The daśāṁśa shows the career and what he does at the workplace. The 2nd, 6th and 10th houses are the important ones in it.
• PVNR reads it from AL: "We don't want to see the real George Bush. For us, the George Bush that we have access to is the Arudha Lagna George Bush."

Mars in AL

• Mars in AL gives an aggressive image. Leo adds authority.
• Whether that image lifts him or pulls him down depends on the planet's agenda, always judged from lagna. For Sagittarius lagna Mars owns the 5th and 12th: a functional benefic.
• So the aggression works for him.
• A student noted Mars is the badhakesha counted from AL. PVNR: the badhakesha from lagna is the one that matters. For this daśāṁśa it is Mercury.
• Badhakesha rule: movable signs, the 11th lord. Fixed signs, the 9th lord. Dual signs, the 7th lord.

3rd and 6th from AL

• 3rd from AL (Libra): Moon, Mercury, Jupiter — three benefics. In legislation and policy he seems to be taking things easy this year.
• 6th from AL (Capricorn): Ketu occupies it. By rāśi dṛṣṭi Venus (Scorpio) and Mars (Leo) aspect it. One benefic against two malefics: the 6th is strong.
• Reading: laid back at first, slow to move, then he finishes the opposition quickly.
• A student's example: Social Security privatisation, which he seemed to have dropped. PVNR: things he seems to have given up on, he may pick up and finish.

Moon Period (October – December 2005, running at the time of the class)

• In the rāśi chart Moon is the badhakesha. In daśāṁśa he is the 8th lord in the 11th.
• He is told to fulfil desires, but his agenda is to make him work hard. Venus, the lord of the 11th, is not much of a friend to Moon, so Moon does not listen. Tension, anxiety, setbacks.
• Image: Moon is a benefic in the 3rd from AL. He appears to be taking things easy.

"People overall think he is lost. He doesn't know what he is doing. He doesn't have a clear focus."

Mars Period (from about December 8, 2005, about a month)

• Dates in an annual chart are reliable: a long cycle is compressed into one year, so an error of weeks becomes minutes.
• Mars is the 5th lord in AL. He suddenly appears capable, aggressive and bold, a man who knows what he wants.
• 5th lord: his popularity ratings may rise.

Mercury Period (January – February 2006)

• Mercury is the 7th and 10th lord in the 11th, and the ruler of the year. But he is the badhakesha. A mixed period, not as good as Mars.
• A student asked whether Mercury changes, being with Jupiter and Moon.

"Badhakesha will give his effect whether he is with Moon or Jupiter or Venus. He remembers that he has to give him some problems."

• Mercury's problems come through the press: something written about someone in his administration.
• It does not touch his power; the natal chart settled that. It is a ripple in his popularity. He may again appear lost.

Rahu Period (June – July 2006, per the class notes)

• The Saturn and Jupiter periods are passed over. Rahu's is the interesting one.
• Rahu is in the 8th in Cancer and is the 3rd lord. Lords of the 3rd, 6th, 8th and 12th in another of those houses give Vipareeta Raja yoga: full for the 6th, 8th and 12th lords, semi for the 3rd lord.
• More important, from AL Rahu is in the 12th — a raja yoga (Part 5).
• Rahu is in Cancer, a sign he loves (Part 6).
• Rahu in the 8th gives Bush a lot of anxiety. Still the period ends in good things working out for him.
