BPHS Ch.24 — Lagna Lord in Houses 1–3: Intelligence Direction, Arudha Lagna Positions & Argala Synergies (Why LL in 3rd = AL in 5th = Seen as Prosperous)

What "Lagna Lord in a House" Means

The class starts chapter 24 of BPHS (Santhanam's edition): the results of the house lords in the twelve houses. Today: the lagna lord in houses 1 to 6.

"Lagna represents the body and lagna lord, the lord of any house, represents how the intellect is directed towards that matter."

"Depending on which house the lagna lord is in, you can say this is where the intellect is focused on, this is where the intelligence of the person is focused on."

The results are guidelines, not thumb rules

• Every result in the chapter is to be taken "with a pinch of salt". You still have to weigh who the planet is, the sign, the aspects, the argalas, the other lords.
• Parāśara defined the tools (argala, ārūḍha, graha and rāśi dṛṣṭi) without elaborating them. The specific results show how those tools are meant to be used.

"The purpose of Parasara in giving all these specific results is not to actually help you give predictions, but to help expand your thinking."

It applies to every divisional chart

A student asks whether these verses are about the rāśi chart only. The answer: no. The verses speak of body, money, siblings, parents, children — matters Parāśara assigns to different vargas — so the placement of the lagna lord is to be read in each divisional chart.

• Rāśi lagna lord: how the intelligence is directed on the physical plane.
• Navāṁśa: the dharmic plane. Daśāṁśa: the professional (karmic) plane.
• Example: daśāṁśa lagna lord in the 9th — in his profession he is bothered about doing the right thing. The same person's lagna lord in the 6th of the chart of siblings — there he is busy fighting his siblings and coming out on top.
• Use the right divisional chart for the matter at hand, "then only you will get clarity".

Malefic association, benefic aspect

In the 6th-house verse Parāśara adds a condition: malefics joined to the lagna lord and no benefic aspecting it. The teacher takes this as a parameter for all the placements. For a bad result, malefics increase it and benefics pull it down. For a good result (the good looks of the 4th-house verse), benefics give it and malefics take it away.

Lagna Lord in the First Three Houses (BPHS Ch. 24)

Lagna Lord in the 1st House

Verse: deha-sukha-bhāg (comfort of the body); bhuja-vikramī (strength of shoulder — a strong constitution); manasvī (an alert mind); chañchala (a little fickle); dvibhāryo paragāmī vā (two wives, or goes after the wives of others).

• Health: the intelligence is on the body itself. He takes care of it, keeps fit and strong.
• Two wives: he is interested in the body and its pleasures, and the lagna lord aspects the 7th house of relationship. That gives a chance of several relationships, nothing more. Judge the 7th, the 9th and the 12th houses, Venus, the 7th lord and the 9th lord before saying anything.
• Fickle-minded — the teacher puts this to the class as a question:
  • Clarity of direction comes from the 4th house. A planet in lagna is in the 10th from the 4th, so it obstructs (virodhārgala) the argala that the 7th house has on the 4th. That takes away some direction.
  • More important is the Arudha Lagna. Count from lagna to the lagna lord and the same again: with the lagna lord in lagna the count returns to lagna. An ārūḍha cannot fall in the 1st or the 7th from its house; then take the 10th from where it fell. AL is in the 10th house.
  • Lagna is the actual self; AL is the perceived self. From AL in the 10th, the lagna lord sits in the 4th — the house of direction, of what to do.
  • So his intelligence is seen to be fixed on which direction to take. One who thinks about that all the time may change direction often.

"He may or may not be really fickle-minded, but the world will see as, oh, he is thinking too much about what to do."

• "Not everybody I know who has lagna lord in lagna is fickle-minded."

Lagna Lord in the 2nd House

Verse: lābhavān (many gains); paṇḍita (scholarly); sukhī (happy, relaxed); suśīla (good character); dharmavit, mānī (knows dharma, honourable); bahu-dāra-guṇair yutaḥ (many wives and many good qualities).

• Gains: the 2nd house is the resources you have access to. The intelligence is directed at wealth.

"It means the person is interested in wealth. It doesn't mean he is wealthy."

• Scholarly: the 4th is the house of learning and the 5th of scholarship; the 2nd is speech and eloquence. Intelligence directed at speech makes what he says logical and eloquent, and one who speaks well looks like a scholar. It may or may not be scholarship. Some people know a lot and make no sense when they talk; others impress by speech alone.
• Happy (sukhī):
  • The 2nd is the 11th from the 4th house of comfort, peace and direction (gati). It has the 11th-house argala on the 4th.
  • Of the 2nd, 4th and 11th argalas, the 11th "clinches the deal": the 11th from a house is the fructification of that house.
  • One planet gives a partial, weak argala. Several planets in the 2nd give a powerful argala on the 4th.
  • Graha dṛṣṭi is only the planet's desire to influence. Argala is a conclusive intervention that stamps the house. Whether the stamp is good or bad depends on the planet: what it owns, its relation to the 4th lord, to planets in the 4th, and to Moon, the kāraka of peace.
  • Rāhu or Saturn in the 2nd, 8th lord and enemy of the 4th lord: with argala on the 4th "he will ruin the peace of the person".
  • A student's chart: Sagittarius lagna, Jupiter and Saturn in Capricorn in the 2nd. Jupiter is lagna lord and 4th lord (Pisces) and a friend of Moon: he wants to give peace. Saturn is the 3rd lord — the 3rd is the 12th from the 4th, the house of initiative that will not let you rest — and an enemy of Moon. Saturn also casts his 3rd graha dṛṣṭi on Pisces. He is in his own sign and Jupiter is debilitated, so Saturn dominates and spoils the peace.
  • For peace of mind the 4th from Moon is indispensable. The 4th from lagna alone does not settle it.
• Knows dharma: the 2nd is the 6th from the 9th — fighting for dharma. Planets in the 2nd define how you fight for it.
  • The lagna lord in the 2nd only directs the intelligence there. A saumya planet (Jupiter, Mercury) may not fight; Mars may. See its relation to the 9th lord and to Mars, the kāraka.

"Righteousness is something that is very tough to uphold in this age. So if you want to be righteous, you have to fight for righteousness."

• Many wives: the first wife is seen from the 7th, the second from the 8th from it, the 2nd house. The 2nd is the death of the first relationship (not necessarily of the wife). If the 7th house and the Upapada are strong, there is no second wife.

Lagna Lord in the 3rd House

Verse: siṁha-tulya-parākramī (brave as a lion); sarva-sampad-yuto (every kind of wealth); mānī (honoured); dvibhāryo (two wives); matimān (intelligent); sukhī.

Parāśara gives stronger results for wealth here than for the 2nd house.

• Brave: the 3rd is the vikrama sthāna. The intelligence is on initiative, bold acts and getting things done.
• All kinds of wealth — three reasons, in rising order of weight:
  1. The 3rd is the 2nd from the 2nd: a planet there has the 2nd-house argala, the argala of resources, on the house of wealth. Initiative feeds wealth. (The same way a planet in the 9th provides for the 8th, one in the 8th for the 7th.)
  2. From the 3rd the lagna lord aspects the 9th house of fortune. Conducive, no guarantee.
  3. The main one: count three signs from the lagna lord in the 3rd and AL is in the 5th house. The lagna lord is then in the 11th from AL. The world sees him as a man who gets what he wants.

"Planets in the 11th from Arudha Lagna always give material success."

• Honoured (mānī): he is prosperous; the lagna lord aspects the 9th, so he is likely to care for dharma; and the 3rd is the 6th from the 10th house of honour — he fights for his name. A bad rumour about him he takes to heart and fights.
  • Caveat: fighting for a thing may also mean being deprived of it and fighting for it all one's life. That depends on the planets.
• Two wives: the 3rd is the house of desire. He is bold, outgoing, with many desires and an active mind.
  • The three placements give "two wives" for three different reasons. Lagna lord in lagna: interest in physical pleasure. In the 2nd: unlucky with the wife — she dies early or the relationship ends. In the 3rd: desire and an outgoing mind. The lagna lord in the 3rd "doesn't give a damn about his physical well-being", he wants to get things done and accumulate.
• Intelligent: the 3rd is the 11th from the 5th — the catalytic argala on the house of intelligence. It gives intelligence if the planet is a friend of the 5th lord, Mercury and Jupiter. The 8th house also has argala on the 5th (the 4th-house argala), but the 3rd's is stronger because it is the 11th.
