BPHS Ch.30 — The 18 Reference Points

The class is in the Arudha chapter (Ch.30), starting at the second half of verse 24. The verse before it gave the references:

"From Lagna, from Arudha Pada as well as from Upapada, whichever sign is the 7th house from there, or from the lord, or from the amsa of that planet — from all these we can see the same results."

The count:

• 3 references: Lagna, Arudha Lagna, Upapada
• × 2 — the 1st or the 7th from each = 6
• × 2 — the house or its lord = 12
• • the amsa of the lord for each of the 6 = 18

"From all these 18 references, which one to use, which one means what — this is all left for our delineation by Parashara."

Verse 25 — Children from the 9th House from the References

Planets in the 9th house from the reference:

Reading "ārki": the word is ārki, "born of Arka (the Sun)" — Saturn. Kujārkibhyām = Mars and Saturn, not Mars and Sun.

Mars + Saturn:

"There will not be children, but he will take care of somebody else's children, possibly his own brother's children."

• The brother's child may live in the house as his own, or the brother dies, or leaves for a far country and leaves the children behind.

Sign of the house:

• Odd (male) sign → many children
• Even (female) sign → not many

Why these planets:

• Sun, Jupiter, Rahu are male planets. Rahu is Jupiter's enemy, yet in the matter of childbirth Jupiter, Rahu and Sun all give.
• Mercury and Saturn are neuter, Moon is female — they deny or delay.
• Mars is the exception: a male planet, but barren for childbirth. He denies, "but he may give some other solution" — the adopted or brother's child.

Leo or Virgo as Upapada

Leo as Upapada, conjoined or aspected by the Moon → alpa-praja, few children.

• Here Parashara is no longer speaking of the 9th house. The Moon is on the Upapada itself.
• Reason given in class: for Leo the Moon is the 12th lord. The 12th lord in the Upapada, and the Moon — who does not give many children — at that.
• The Moon unafflicted by Saturn and Mercury can still give some children (the "one child" of the earlier verse).
• A student asked whether the same holds for, say, a Cancer Upapada with Mercury (its 12th lord). The teacher: yes, Leo is only an example. "If the 12th lord is in Upapada, maybe it is not conducive to having a lot of children. Not conducive to a successful marriage, maybe."
• The printed translation says only "aspected by the Moon". The verse says yutekṣite — conjoined or aspected.

Virgo as Upapada → kanyā-praja, more daughters than sons.

"The nature of the sign itself where Upapada is placed has a role to play."

Sutabhāva Navāṁśa and Triṁśāṁśa

The next verse was left untranslated in the printed edition. It says: from the navāṁśa of the 5th house (sutabhāva-navāṁśa) and from the sthira kāraka of children, and likewise in the triṁśāṁśa chart, judge the yogas for children.

"Sutabhāva-navāṁśa" — two plausible readings:

1. The 5th house of the navāṁśa chart.
2. The navāṁśa of the 5th house: the house spans 30°, but its cusp is the main point — take the 5th cusp and see where it falls in navāṁśa.

A third reading — the navāṁśa of the 5th lord — is less likely: the verse says bhāva, not bhāveśa.

Why navāṁśa and triṁśāṁśa, not saptāṁśa:

• Triṁśāṁśa shows the evils done and the punishment for them. "If there is any problem with children, it has to have a link with the evils of the past life."
• Navāṁśa on the positive side, triṁśāṁśa on the negative side.

"Navamsa shows marriage. Childbirth is one of the purposes of marriage. So actually Navamsa is not an irrelevant chart for children, even though we are used to seeing only Saptamsa."

• Saptāṁśa, by Parashara's own words, is for children and grandchildren — whether the child is talented or dull, famous, a politician.
• The birth of a child itself has to do with marriage. "There have to be some clear tangible rules based on Navamsa to see childbirth" — the teacher says he has not worked on the navāṁśa this way so far.

Siblings from the 3rd and 11th

Saturn and Rahu in the 3rd or 11th from the pada (the verse does not say which pada; probably the Arudha pada):

• In the 11th → destroys elder siblings
• In the 3rd → destroys younger siblings
• "They deplete. They are the planets of depletion."

Venus there → garbhasya nāśa, abortion to the mother. "Not that the brother is born and then died. Even birth is problematic."

Venus in Lagna or in the pada, or in the 8th — conjoining or aspecting — gives the same result.

• The printed translation reads this as "the 8th from Lagna or from the Arudha". The teacher disagrees: the verse says in lagna, in the pada, or in the 8th. So: the 1st or the 8th, from Lagna or Arudha Lagna.
• Not every Venus in Lagna or Arudha Lagna gives this. A badly placed Venus gives some misfortune, and it can fall on the brothers.

Why Venus is bad for siblings:

"He is an enemy of the bhrātṛ kāraka Mars. For younger siblings it is Mars, for elder siblings it is Jupiter. And Venus is an enemy of both."

• If Venus is also an enemy of the 3rd and 11th lords, or badly placed from them, "you can be sure that Venus is bad for siblings."

The sages say, without doubt: judge the same way for the 3rd and 11th from Lagna or the pada. Venus there → trouble for siblings, or abortion to the mother while carrying them.

Moon, Jupiter, Mercury or Mars there → many siblings, and they are strong and bold.

• Moon and Jupiter are friends of Mars; Mars himself; Mercury "cooperates with Mars in many material results".

Saturn and Mars Together in the 3rd/11th

Condition: Saturn and Mars together in that sign, or together aspecting it — the 3rd or 11th from Lagna or the Arudha pada.

Result: younger (3rd) or elder (11th) siblings are destroyed.

"Even though Mars is also there, if he is afflicted by Saturn, he is no good."

Mars is the sibling significator, but afflicted by Saturn he does not save them.

Saturn Alone in the 3rd/11th

Condition: Saturn alone — not with Mars — in the 3rd or the 11th.

Result: sva-mātra śeṣaḥ — he alone remains; the other siblings perish.

"If Saturn is alone in the 3rd or 11th from Arudha lagna or lagna, all siblings will be destroyed. The person will be left alone. Especially if that Saturn is very strong."

Several siblings may die, or not be born at all.

Ketu in the 3rd/11th — Many Sisters

Condition: Ketu in the 3rd or 11th.

Result: bahulaṁ bhaginī-sukham — many siblings, but sisters.

• Ketu is like Mars. Unlike Saturn he is not an enemy; he is a co-significator.
• Rahu shows male, Ketu shows female.
• The teacher's extension: female planets (Moon, Venus) there → probably more sisters.

The 6th from Arudha Lagna — Livelihood

Condition: a functional malefic in the 6th from the Arudha — the house of livelihood — with no functional benefic there and none associated by aspect or argala.

Result: caura — a thief.

"Thief is a very specific result. It may or may not be thief. Bottom line is if there are malefics influencing the 6th from Arudha, the career will be a bad career, an undesirable career. Whereas if it is a benefic planet, it will be a desirable career."

Rahu in the 7th or 12th from Arudha Lagna — Wise and Fortunate

Condition: Rahu conjoins or aspects the 7th or the 12th from Arudha Lagna.

Result: jñānavān (wise, with knowledge) and bahu-bhāgya-yuta (with many fortunes). The class ends its reading here: "we finished up to verse 38."

Why fortunate:

• The 7th from Arudha Lagna is a reference for the personality as it projects outward. Rahu is the planet of material success, so the image is of a materially successful person.
• In the 12th, Rahu has argala on Arudha Lagna, so the image is shaped by what Rahu gives. And Rahu denies the house he sits in: the 12th is giving. "He doesn't give much, he accumulates. So again, he is very fortunate."

Why wise:

• Rahu in the 7th → Ketu in Arudha Lagna itself: a spiritual and wise person.
• Rahu in the 12th → Ketu in the 6th from Arudha Lagna: the livelihood, the karma, is spiritual.

Which one wins — compare the strength of Rahu and Ketu:

• Arudha Lagna Leo, Ketu in Leo, Rahu in Aquarius: Ketu is in an inimical sign, Rahu in his own house. Rahu's results dominate.
• Arudha Lagna Gemini, Rahu in Taurus, Ketu in Scorpio: Ketu is the stronger, but the gap is smaller than in the first example.

"The bottom line is both kinds of results are possible. Jñāna is possible; bhāgya, material fortune, is also possible in that combination."
