BPHS Ch.34 Leo/Virgo/Libra/Scorpio: Leo=Mars+Sun+Jupiter Benefic; Virgo=Venus ONLY Benefic+Moon Worst Malefic; Libra=Jupiter+Sun Malefic+Mars Maraka+Moon-Mercury Raj Yoga; Scorpio=Moon Clear Benefic+Moon-Sun Yogakaraka; KEY: "Jeevadhyaha Papa"=Functional Malefics Kill, NOT Natural; Saturn NOT Primary Maraka for Libra

Leo lagna: Mars (4L+9L) = benefic (9L trikona + 4L kendra neutral for malefics); Sun (1L) = pure benefic; Jupiter (5L+8L) = benefic (5L trikona + karakatva overrides 8L); Saturn (6L+7L) = clear Maraka (natural enemy of Sun + 6th+7th); Venus (3L+10L) = malefic (3L always malefic); Mercury (2L+11L) = malefic (11L dominates). "Jupiter+Venus NOT reliable Raj Yoga for Leo — they are enemies; Jupiter as 8th lord is unreliable." Virgo lagna: Mercury+Venus = the ONLY Raj Yoga pair ("Bhargavendu sutaa bhavetaam yogarkau"); Moon (11L) = WORST malefic; Jupiter (4L+7L) = maximum Kendrajatva (two kendras, no trikona = clear neutral/weak); Venus = simultaneously Yogakaraka (9L) AND Maraka (2L) — "these two coexist." Saturn (5L+6L) = neutral (trikona vs malefic cancel; Parashara doesn't mention him). Libra lagna: Jupiter (3L+6L) = doubly malefic; Sun (11L) = malefic; Mars (2L+7L) = primary Maraka (double Maraka); Saturn (4L+5L) = benefic (5L trikona); Moon+Mercury = Yogakaraka pair (10L kendra + 9L trikona). Critical teaching: "Parashara says jeevadhyaha papa = functional malefics become Maraka when in/aspecting 2nd/7th — NOT natural malefics like Saturn/Mars; for Libra, Jupiter+Sun (functional papa) are the Maraka, not Saturn/Mars as modern texts claim." Scorpio lagna: Moon (9L) = clear benefic (pure trikona); Sun+Moon = Yogakaraka pair (10L+9L); Mercury (8L+11L) = malefic (11L dominates); Saturn (3L+4L) = malefic (3L dominates); Venus (7L+12L) = malefic; Jupiter (2L+5L) = benefic but potential Maraka (5L trikona character usually dominates; unlikely to kill as primary function). "Parashara's approach is much more fluid and chart-dependent than all modern texts I have seen — sahachara rule for 2/8/12 lords and Kendrajatva rule make this dynamic."

"For Libra lagna, Parashara says "jeevadhyaha papa" — the functional malefics. He does NOT say "natural malefics." For Libra, the functional malefics are Jupiter and Sun — they own 3rd and 6th and 11th. THEY are the ones who become Maraka when placed in or aspecting the 2nd or 7th. Not Saturn, not Mars. All modern texts get this wrong because they apply a static rule. Parashara's rule is completely lagna-dependent. This is the precision that separates Parashara from everything that came after."

BPHS Ch.34 — Lagna-Specific Functional Nature: Leo Lagna

Sanskrit fragment: "Somya sukra arka jahapapa... kuja jyarka shubhavaha... pravahay yogamastu na gujena kuprevoh"

Lagna: Leo (Simha)

PlanetHouses OwnedFunctional NatureReason
Mercury2nd + 11thMalefic11th lord = always malefic; 2nd = Maraka (but depends on sahachara); malefic dominates
Venus3rd + 10thMalefic3rd lord = always malefic; 10th = kendra (neutral by Parashara's words, but 3rd overrides)
Saturn6th + 7thMalefic / Maraka6th = disease/enemies = malefic; 7th = Maraka; Saturn = natural enemy of Sun (lagna lord) → clear killer
Mars4th + 9thBenefic9th = trikona (excellent); 4th = kendra (neutral for malefics = not malefic); strong benefic
Sun1stBeneficLagna lord = trikona; own sign = very strong; pure benefic
Jupiter5th + 8thBenefic5th = trikona AND karaka for 5th; 8th's effect overridden by trikona ownership + karakatva
MoonBy sahacharaMoon alone cannot be classified without seeing who she is with

Key notes:

  • Jupiter: 5th lord AND karaka of 5th = doubly strong; 8th lordship only becomes dangerous if Jupiter is afflicted by malefics and acts more as 8th lord than 5th
  • Saturn = clear Maraka for Leo: Sanskrit says "maraka stu sanyashta dahasa cha" = Saturn is the killer
  • Mercury: somewhat flexible due to 2nd lordship; if with benefics (Sun, Mars), he can partially become benefic; as 11th lord he is malefic, but 2nd lord status makes him responsive to company
  • Venus and Jupiter yoga: NOT a strong Raj Yoga — "pravahay yoga, na shivam guru jupreyo" = Jupiter and Venus being enemies, their yoga does not give auspicious results for Leo

BPHS Ch.34 — Lagna-Specific Functional Nature: Virgo Lagna

Sanskrit: "Bhargavendu sutaa bhavetaam yogarkau. Markovi-kavi-hinu..."

Lagna: Virgo (Kanya)

PlanetHouses OwnedFunctional NatureReason
Mercury1st + 10thModerate beneficLagna lord = trikona (benefic); 10th = kendra (Kendrajatva dosha); both combine
Venus2nd + 9thBenefic + Maraka9th = trikona = benefic; 2nd = Maraka; simultaneously Yogakaraka AND Maraka
Mars3rd + 8thMalefic (conditional)3rd = malefic; 8th = inauspicious; but with benefic company, 8th lord part can become benefic
Jupiter4th + 7thMalefic (Kendrajatva)Owns 2 kendras (4th + 7th) = maximum Kendrajatva; no trikona = clear Kendrajatva dosha
Moon11thMalefic11th lord = always malefic; worst malefic for Virgo
Sun12thBy sahachara12th lord → see other house (none for Sun) and company; give results per association
Saturn5th + 6thNeutral5th = trikona (benefic); 6th = malefic; balance = neutral; Parashara doesn't mention him at all

Yogakaraka pair: Mercury + Venus together = Raj Yoga (both are functional benefics)

  • "Bhargavendu sutaa bhavetaam yogarkau" = Mercury and Venus exclusively are the yogarkas
  • This means Jupiter-Venus yoga is not the real Raj Yoga; Mercury-Venus yoga is the real one

Maraka for Virgo: Venus = both Yogakaraka and Maraka; Jupiter = 7th lord = can also kill

  • PVNR: "Venus gives great things but also has Maraka character; these two things coexist"

Order of malefic severity (for Virgo lagna, as given by PVNR):

  1. Moon (11th lord) = worst malefic
  2. Mars (3rd lord primarily)
  3. Jupiter (Kendrajatva + 7th lord = Maraka potential)

BPHS Ch.34 — Lagna-Specific Functional Nature: Libra Lagna

Sanskrit: "Jeevar ka bhushtaha papa... Jeevar ka bhushtaha. Jeevar arka bhushtaha. Mercury sada phala. Sutaha, yogarakau. Kuja joni hanti..."

Lagna: Libra (Tula)

PlanetHouses OwnedFunctional NatureReason
Jupiter3rd + 6thMaleficBoth 3rd and 6th = Upachaya malefic houses; clear double malefic
Sun11thMalefic11th lord = always malefic
Mars2nd + 7thMaraka2nd = Maraka; 7th = Maraka; clear double Maraka → Mars kills for Libra
Moon10thNeutral / Borderline beneficKendra lord (neither benefic nor malefic per Kendrajatva); but can form Raj Yoga with Mercury
Mercury9th + 12thBenefic (conditional)9th = trikona = benefic; 12th = see other house (9th) → overall benefic, but depends on sahachara
Saturn4th + 5thBenefic5th = trikona (excellent); 4th = kendra (neutral); net positive = benefic (even without sahachara qualification)
Venus1st + 8thNeutralLagna lord = trikona (benefic); 8th lord = see other house → lagna; overall neutral

Yogakaraka pair: Moon + Mercury

  • "Sutaha, yogarkau" = Moon and Mercury will be Yogakarkas (Raj Yoga givers)
  • Why: Moon = 10th lord (kendra, neutral); Mercury = 9th lord (trikona, benefic); together they form the best Raj Yoga for Libra

Maraka for Libra: Mars = primary killer (2nd + 7th lord = double Maraka)

  • "Kuja joni hanti" = Mars kills for this lagna
  • "Jeevadhyaha papa marka kshnaha" = functional malefics (here: Jupiter, Sun, Mars) when associating with 2nd or 7th house/lord, also become killers
  • Key clarification from PVNR: "Parashara says 'jeevadhyaha papa' = functional malefics (not natural malefics); for Libra, Jupiter and Sun are functional malefics, so THEY become Maraka when in 2nd/7th — not Mars/Saturn as modern texts assume"

Parashara's dynamic approach:

"All modern texts, including Uttarakalamrita, define benefics and malefics in a static way. But Parashara's approach is much more FLUID and chart-dependent. The sahachara rule for 2nd/8th/12th lords, and the Kendrajatva rule for benefics in kendras, makes this much more dynamic."

— PVNR

BPHS Ch.34 — Lagna-Specific Functional Nature: Scorpio Lagna

Sanskrit fragment: "Sita gna chanah yaha... Mercury, Venus, Saturn = papaha; Jupiter, Moon = benefics"

Lagna: Scorpio (Vrischika)

PlanetHouses OwnedFunctional NatureReason
Venus7th + 12thMalefic7th = Maraka (not great); 12th = vyaya; overall malefic; depends on sahachara
Mercury8th + 11thMalefic11th = clear malefic; 8th = inauspicious (but conditional); 11th dominates
Saturn3rd + 4thMalefic3rd = malefic; 4th = kendra (neutral for malefic); 3rd lord status dominates → malefic
Moon9thClear benefic9th lord = trikona = Lakshmi sthana; pure benefic; more benefic than Jupiter
Jupiter2nd + 5thBenefic + Maraka5th = trikona (excellent); 2nd = Maraka; similar to Venus for Virgo — both benefic and Maraka
Mars1st + 6thNeutral / conditionalLagna lord = benefic; 6th = malefic; they partially cancel; Mars = lagna lord takes precedence for basic beneficence
SunYogakaraka with MoonMoon + Sun = Raj Yoga givers; Sun as single kendra lord is neither malefic nor benefic; forms Raj Yoga with Moon

Raj Yoga pair: Moon + Sun

  • "Surya chandra madhyavego, hove damjo hukaraka ho" = Moon and Sun become Yogakarkas
  • Why: Moon = 9th lord (trikona); Sun = 10th lord (kendra); together = classic Raj Yoga
  • PVNR: "For Scorpio, even though Sun owns kendra, natural malefics owning kendra are not malefic; so Sun is capable of giving Raj Yoga unlike Jupiter/Venus for Gemini"

Jupiter's dual nature for Scorpio:

  • "Jupiter is a benefic but also a Maraka" — owns both 5th (trikona = benefic) and 2nd (Maraka)
  • In this lagna, Jupiter may NOT kill because he is also 5th lord + lagna lord's friend + karaka for Poorva Punya
  • "Jupiter, even though 2nd lord, being the 5th lord of Purva Punya AND being lagna lord's friend, is unlikely to kill as primary function"
  • Contrast: Jupiter is mentioned as Maraka in Libra (3rd+6th lord = malefic) but NOT as primary Maraka in Scorpio (5th+2nd, trikona benefit)

Key Teaching: Parashara's Dynamic Benefic/Malefic Classification

"The way Parashara has defined benefics and malefics is actually much more fluid and much more chart-dependent than the way all modern texts that I have seen define it. All modern texts, including Uttarakalamrita, define it in a static way. This is much more dynamic."

— PVNR

Key dynamic rules:

  1. 3/6/11 lords = always malefic (regardless of planet)
  2. Trikona lords (1/5/9) = always benefic
  3. Kendra lords (4/7/10) = Kendrajatva (neutral/reduced beneficence for benefic planets)
  4. 2/8/12 lords = depends on:
    • (a) The OTHER house they own
    • (b) Sahachara (who they are with)

Shubha/Papa vs. Saumya/Krura:

  • "Saumya/Krura" = natural nature of the planet (not lagna-dependent)
  • "Shubha/Papa" = functional nature (lagna-dependent)
  • Parashara MAINTAINED a clear distinction: when he says "papa" in BPHS Ch.34, he means FUNCTIONAL malefic, not natural malefic

For Maraka determination:

"Parashara says: jeevadhyaha papa = functional malefics (not natural malefics like Mars/Saturn). When THEY associate with 2nd or 7th house/lord, they become Maraka. So for Libra, Jupiter and Sun (functional malefics) are the potential Maraka planets — not Mars and Saturn as modern texts claim."

— PVNR
