Opening: D-3 Extension — Seeing Mother-in-Law

Continuation of Lesson 18's Drekkana reading of the student chart (Feb 25, 1963).

Recap: Counting Siblings and Children

• Direction of counting depends on the lagna of the divisional chart: odd sign → forward, even sign → backward.
• Children (D-7): 5th, 7th, 9th, 11th … Younger siblings (D-3): 3rd, 5th, 7th … Elder siblings: 11th, 9th, 7th …
• Take that sign, see where its lord sits, and take the lord's sign as the lagna of that sibling or child.
• Spouse of that sibling or child = the Upapada (UL) counted from that lagna.
• Their children = the 9th from that Upapada — children are the dharma, the fruit, of the marriage.
• Shortcut: counting 11 backward lands on the same sign as counting 3 forward; counting 3 backward is the same as 11 forward.

How to See a Sibling's Mother-in-Law

1. Find the sibling's lagna (the sign holding the lord of the sibling's house).
2. From that lagna find the Upapada — the sibling's spouse.
3. Take the 4th from that Upapada — the mother of the spouse = the sibling's mother-in-law.

Here you take the 4th sign itself, not the sign of its lord.

"You find the Upapada from that lagna, and then you see the fourth from there — that will be the mother-in-law."

Worked Example — the Elder Brother's Mother-in-Law

D-3 lagna is Taurus, an even sign, so count backward.

• 11th backward (= 3rd forward) is Cancer, with Rahu — a miscarriage between the native and the elder brother (confirmed in the last class).
• The sibling elder to that one is the 11th backward again, which is Virgo.
• PVNR first read the brother from Virgo itself, then corrected himself: take the lord. Mercury, lord of Virgo, is in Taurus. So the elder brother's lagna is Taurus, not Virgo.
• Upapada from Taurus = Arudha of the 12th from Taurus (Aries) = Gemini, with the Sun in it → the sister-in-law.
• 4th from Gemini = Virgo, with Saturn in it → the sister-in-law's mother.

Reading:

• Sun sits in the sister-in-law's sign and Saturn in her mother's sign. Both signs are Mercury's, yet Sun and Saturn are enemies → some friction between the sister-in-law and her own mother. What exactly it is cannot be told from this chart.
• The brother himself is seen from Mercury (in Taurus). Mercury and Saturn are friends → the brother and his mother-in-law get along. The native confirmed: "They do."
• The native added that the trouble on that side comes through the sister-in-law's brothers. PVNR: who causes it is hard to say; that the relationship is not a great one is what Sun and Saturn show.

How Far You Can Go

"As you go further and further away, the predictions will not be as crisp."

• About the native and his siblings: very good predictions. About a sister-in-law: some. About the sister-in-law's mother: only a general idea.
• More than the mother-in-law herself, the chart shows the relationship between her and the people around her.

What the Drekkana Lagna Means

• The lagna of the Drekkana is not the native's existence in general. It is the native from the point of view of siblings — his dealings with them, what he does to them and they to him — and that includes the siblings' relatives.
• So if the native had a bad relationship with his brother's mother-in-law, it would show. Here it does not: the native's D-3 lagna and Virgo are not badly related.
• The elder brother's lagna falls on the native's own D-3 lagna. That does not make this reading the native's own mother-in-law. The native's own mother-in-law is seen in the Navamsha, the chart of his spouse. The Drekkana is only for siblings and their relatives.

Friction Indicators Between Two Relatives

When the lagnas of two relatives have been found in a chart like the Drekkana or Saptamsha:

• Sun in one sign and Saturn in the other → friction. Both are political planets at opposite ends: the Sun wants to be king, Saturn is the labourer. Father and son, yet always opposed. They repel each other the way you dislike some people on sight.
• The same holds for Sun and Rahu, Sun and Ketu, Moon and Rahu, Moon and Ketu → a less than ideal relationship.
• Shadashtaka (the two lagnas 6th and 8th from each other) and Dwirdwadasha (2nd and 12th from each other) are also not good relationships.
• Planets show it more clearly than the sign positions. Two lagnas in 2/12 need not fight; it may only mean one expects something from the other and does not get it — frustration.
• Between a mother and her daughter it will not be open repulsion. It is an inner proneness to disagreement.

Graha Malika Yoga in the Student's Chart

A student points out a Graha Malika Yoga in the Rashi chart of the same native, and that his Venus dasha has just begun.

Graha Malika (Garland of Planets)

• Every sign from a starting planet to an ending planet is occupied → Graha Malika Yoga.
• Some take it only with at least 5 signs; some say 4 is enough. The class takes 4.
• Here (Virgo lagna): Venus in Sagittarius → Mercury, Saturn, Ketu in Capricorn → Sun, Jupiter in Aquarius → Moon in Pisces. Four signs, 4th house to 7th.

The Seed — Venus

• Venus is the Chara Atmakaraka, the significator of the soul.
• Venus is the 9th lord (dharma, religion, guru) and also the 2nd lord (money).
• The planet that owns the house of religion is Atmakaraka and is the seed of the garland → very auspicious.

The Dasha of the Atmakaraka

A popular thumb rule (thumb rules do not always work): the Vimshottari dasha of the Chara Atmakaraka is bad for material prosperity and very good for spiritual growth.

• The Atmakaraka's agenda is not money or cars. It is salvation.
• He is the soul. He remembers what you did over many lives and what this life is for.
• If you go after pursuits that take you away from that, he teaches harsh lessons and forces you back to the path that is right from the soul's point of view.
• Predominantly materialistic people usually suffer in the Atmakaraka's dasha.

"What is right, what is wrong depends on who is looking at it. When Atmakaraka takes a good look at you, the right path for him is that of spiritual growth and salvation. All other paths are irrelevant to him."

Advice given to the native: let your spirituality grow. If you hamper it, it will grow by troubling you. Go with the flow and there is no sad development. There may be material setbacks, more so if he runs after material success.

What Venus Dasha Gives Here

• It is the seed dasha: it sets the direction of his spiritual growth. He finds his roots, his identity, why he came into this world.
• Some people find their spirituality through yogic sadhana alone, without rituals. Here the Atmakaraka owns the 9th house of dharma → he finds it through the religious, ritualistic path.

The Culmination — Moon

The garland ends in the Moon. How strong is he?

• In Pisces, the sign of Jupiter. Jupiter is the Moon's permanent friend. Jupiter is in the adjoining sign (planets within three signs on either side are temporary friends) → temporary friend too. Permanent + temporary friend = adhimitra, best friend.
• Pisces is a jala tattva sign and the Moon a jala tattva planet → he is relaxed there. Excellent sthana bala.
• Always check the paksha for the Moon. Waning (Krishna paksha) Moon is not strong; waxing (Shukla paksha) Moon is strong and auspicious. Here it is Shukla paksha just after Amavasya — a thin line, but growing.

What the Moon gives:

• Moon owns the 11th house (friends, gains), sits in the 7th (relationships) and is Dara Karaka → as a result of his spiritual pursuit he makes many friends and is surrounded by peaceful, relaxed people.
• A9 and A8 are both in Cancer, the Moon's sign.
  • The 9th house is dharma as you feel it — others cannot see it. A9 is its tangible form: the rituals you perform, the organisation or ashram you join.
  • The 8th house is occult knowledge and sadhana — the pursuit of what cannot be seen, through understanding and tapasya, not through ritual. A8 is its tangible form.
• So in Moon dasha he joins a proper religious order, an organisation, institute or ashram, takes part in its rituals, and also does occult sadhana there. Moon dasha is a long way off.

Lord of an Arudha in Trine from It

• The 9th from any sign is its protection.
• When the lord of an Arudha Pada is in a trine from it, he protects it. When he is in the 9th from it, he protects it very well.
• Moon, lord of Cancer, is in Pisces — the 9th from Cancer → A9 and A8 are well protected.

Conditional Nakshatra Dashas

Introduced on John Kerry's chart (data and rectification in Part 4), before timing his life.

Why Use a Conditional Dasha

• Parashara taught many nakshatra dashas besides Vimshottari. Vimshottari applies to everybody. Each of the others applies only when a condition is met in the chart.
• When a conditional dasha applies, use it in place of Vimshottari: the results are far more consistent.
• A student asked whether it is based on the Moon like Vimshottari. Yes — all of them are counted from the Moon's nakshatra. What changes from one to the next is which planet rules which nakshatra, the order of the planets, and the years given to each.
• Each scheme suits a different focus of life. Vimshottari still applies and shows how the native takes the events of his life; the conditional dasha shows the same events from the angle of that chart's focus, and shows them more clearly.

"If there is a conditional dasha that is applicable, that will show things much clearer. That is the bottom line."

Dashas Named in the Class

The conditions for Chaturashiti Sama, Dwadashottari, Ashtottari, Shatabdika and Panchottari are given in Lesson 20.

Which One to Use When Several Apply

1. Normally take the dasha with the higher number of years.
2. But do not go by the years when one of the conditions is generic. A condition built on day or night birth, the Sun's or Moon's hora, or the paksha holds for about half of all people. A rarer condition wins, even if the generic dasha has more years.

The arithmetic PVNR gave:

• Shattrimsha Sama: half of the daytime the lagna is in the Sun's hora, half of the night it is in the Moon's hora → the condition holds for half of all charts.
• Dwisaptati Sama: lagna lord in the 7th is 1/12, 7th lord in lagna is 1/12. P(A or B) = P(A) + P(B) − P(A and B) = 1/12 + 1/12 − 1/144 ≈ 1/6, about 16% (treating the two as nearly independent).
• A student asked whether a chart with both — lagna lord in the 7th and 7th lord in lagna — is excluded. No: "or" covers either one or both; the dasha still applies.

Finding the Hora of the Lagna

This is the hora of the D-2 chart, not the planetary hour of the day.

• Odd signs: first half (0°–15°) = Sun's hora, second half = Moon's hora.
• Even signs: first half = Moon's hora, second half = Sun's hora.
• Odd is the Sun's nature, so the Sun comes first. Even is female, the Moon's nature, so the Moon comes first.

Kerry: lagna at 24° Scorpio. Scorpio is the 8th sign, even. 24° is in the second half → Sun's hora.

Day or Night — Check the Sunrise

"When you look at 7 o'clock or 8 o'clock, do not jump to the conclusion that it is daytime. It can be nighttime; it depends on sunrise."

• Kerry was born at 8:08 AM in December. Sunrise that day was at 8:15 → a night birth.
• By the rule as stated, a night birth in the Sun's hora does not meet the Shattrimsha Sama condition. PVNR went on with "suppose it is applicable" only to make the point about generic conditions.

Kerry: Dwisaptati Sama Dasha

• Shashtihayani applies: the Sun is in lagna.
• Dwisaptati Sama applies more: lagna lord Mars is in the 7th house of the Rashi chart.
• Parashara's condition is for the Rashi chart alone, and that is enough. Here it repeats: in the Navamsha the 7th lord Sun is in lagna, and in the Dashamsha the lagna lord Jupiter is in the 7th. Three charts → the dasha is extremely strongly applicable.

What the condition means: the 7th is the house of desires. Lagna lord in the 7th or 7th lord in lagna shows a person of strong desires whose life is built on pursuing them. This dasha shows how he pursues them.

• Vimshottari: how he takes what happens in his life.
• Dwisaptati Sama: how he takes it from the point of view of the pursuit of his desires. Marriage, children, becoming senator, running for president — his mind looks at each of these as a desire pursued.
• In another chart the focus may be career, karma; a different conditional dasha will then apply.
