Dasha Analysis — Reading Mahadasha & Antardasha
How to read Mahadasha and Antardasha together using the Sun-Moon principle. Applied to PVNR's D24 — tracing IIT JEE success, Masters completion, and the exact year astrology learning began. Any planet with Argala on an Arudha gives results for that Arudha in its antardasha.
"Any planet that occupies an Arudha OR has Argala on an Arudha will tend to give results relating to that Arudha during that antardasha."
— P.V.R. Narasimha Rao
Mahadasha vs Antardasha: The Sun-Moon Principle
This is one of the most important framework rules for applying Dashas:
| Level | Karaka | Principle |
|---|---|---|
| Mahadasha (major period) | Sun | Satya — stable, eternal, soul-level. Look at house placements from Lagna (lordship, position, strength). Arudhas are secondary. |
| Antardasha (sub-period) | Moon | Maya — changing, mind-level, tangible. Look at Arudha Padas primarily. Also Chandra Lagna (Moon as Lagna). |
Why Moon rules Antardasha: Moon is Devi/Parvati, the force behind all Maya. This whole creation is Maya of the Devi. Moon represents mind, which fluctuates and changes — exactly like antardashas, which change every 1–2 years. Atma (soul, Sun) is stable and governs the longer Mahadasha period.
Practical rule when judging Antardashas:
— PVNR"Any planet that occupies an Arudha OR has Argala on an Arudha will tend to give results relating to that Arudha during that antardasha."
Example Chart 1: PVNR's D-24 (Siddhamsa — Chart of Learning)
Birth Data: April 4, 1970, 5:43–5:47 PM IST, Machilipatnam (81E08, 16N10)
Chart: D-24 Siddhamsa
D-24 Lagna: Gemini (Mithuna)
— PVNRIn D-24, Lagna represents the seed of educational existence. A planet in Lagna here denotes a new beginning in learning.
Shani Dasha / Moon Antardasha (1986–1988)
Context: PVNR is writing intermediate (higher secondary) exams and sitting for IIT JEE entrance examination.
Moon's position in D-24: Moon is in the D-24 Lagna (Gemini), with A11 and A5 also there.
| Arudha | Meaning | Result during Moon Antardasha |
|---|---|---|
| A11 (11th house Arudha) | Tangible gains | Some concrete gain that gives a new beginning (Lagna = new beginning in education) |
| A5 (5th house Arudha) | Recognition of abilities | People see one as capable — IIT rank, state merit position |
| Moon in 12H from A6 | 12H = loss to A6 (competitors/opposition) | Less competition, things happen very smoothly — entered IIT without heavy struggle |
| Moon in 5H from AL | 5H from Arudha Lagna = perceived abilities | People have a strong impression of learning abilities during Moon periods |
Key insight: Moon in 12H from A6 (competition) means the opposition gives up — things happen with minimal resistance. PVNR got an engineering entrance rank in the 30s without even studying.
— PVNR"If the same A11 and A5 were in the 8th house, those gains would still come but would result in sudden changes — or relate to occult knowledge (8H = hidden knowledge). Here, being in Lagna, those gains give a new beginning to education itself."
Shani Dasha — Overall Analysis
Saturn's position in D-24: Shani is in the 3rd house (Leo), owning the 8th house and 9th house.
Why Shani in 3H is auspicious for malefics:
— PVNR"3H, 6H, and 11H are very auspicious for any malefic — Sun, Mars, Saturn, Rahu, Ketu. If they are in any other house, results are mixed; if in these three, it is very auspicious."
What Shani in 3H gives:
- 3H = initiative, determination, the start — Shani here causes laziness (he is Manda, the slow one). Things come very easily, but starting requires enormous effort.
- Once started, he finishes quickly — PVNR's book: spent 3 years writing 10 pages, then wrote the whole book in 1.5 months once he decided to start.
- Shani owns 9H (traditional knowledge, guru, dharma) — traditional conservative knowledge is his dharma
- Shani aspects 9H (7th aspect) — Shani himself has his desire on his own house → traditional knowledge will definitely be given
Real-life result: PVNR learned Sanskrit from age 5 to 13 during Shani Dasha. Passed:
- Kovida exam (conducted by Bhaktivedya Bhavan)
- Vichara exam (conducted by Baroda Vishwavidyalaya)
- Both diplomas equivalent to BA degree
- Could write poetry in Sanskrit, read Sanskrit texts without translation
Shani's three aspects in D-24:
| Aspect | House Aspected | Result |
|---|---|---|
| 3rd aspect (3→5H) | 5th house (abilities/popularity) | Shani = karaka for masses. Aspect gives popularity and a following — Saturn's influence creates mass following |
| 7th aspect (3→9H) | 9th house (fortune/dharma) | Shani owns 9H and aspects it → double influence → fortune and traditional dharma are definitely given |
| 10th aspect (3→12H) | 12th house (giving/losses) | Shani = karaka for 12H; aspecting it → person gives much to others, slowly (Manda nature) but steadily |
Mars in 7H aspects 3H (Karka + aggression):
- Mars is the karaka of 3H (initiative, aggression, drive)
- Mars in 7H has 3rd aspect (4th, 8th, 12th for Mars is wrong — Mars aspects 4th, 7th, 8th from its position; from 7H: 4th aspect = 10H, 7th = 1H, 8th = 2H… wait — actually Mars in 7H gives a Rasi drishti on 3H from Lagna)
- Karaka aspecting the house = project manager directly working on the project → very decisive effect
Combined result: Shani = laziness (slow to start), Mars = aggression (forceful once started). The two extremes balance. Mixed result: very lazy to begin, but once begun, very forceful and fast.
The Lagna vs AL Initiative Distinction
This is a crucial philosophical point PVNR emphasizes:
| Reference | What it Shows |
|---|---|
| 3H from Lagna | Real inner initiative — what you truly are (hidden, only you know it) |
| A3 | Tangible manifestation of initiative — books written, lectures given, projects completed |
| 3H from Arudha Lagna | What people think of your initiative — your perceived drive |
PVNR's example:
- 3H from Lagna (in D-24) shows his real laziness — Shani causing sluggishness, nobody sees this
- 3H from Arudha Lagna = Aries (Mars owns it; Mars has Argala on it from 2H from AL)
- Aries = fiery, determined
- Mars's Argala = decisive influence on perceived initiative
- People see him as very aggressive, forceful, and determined in matters of knowledge — writing, teaching, research
- His actual laziness is invisible to others
— PVNR"People think: 'He writes software, writes a book, teaches astrology — how does he do so many things? He has such strong motivation!' But that's from Aries and Mars — not my real inner state. Only I know my laziness."
Shani Dasha / Guru Antardasha (1992–1994)
Jupiter's position in D-24: Meena (Pisces), 10th house from Gemini Lagna
Arudhas associated with Jupiter in Meena: A7 and A8
| Arudha | House | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| A7 | 7th house | Tangible interaction with people — meetings, collaborations |
| A8 | 8th house (Mrityu Pada) | Tangible ending/break; also manifested occult knowledge |
Results during Shani Dasha / Guru Antardasha:
-
A7 → meetings with Jupiter-like people: Guru = wise, scholarly, traditional. During this period PVNR met scholarly people.
-
A8 → break in education: Shani owns 8H (lord of 8H = break); A8 is in Jupiter's location. July 1993: PVNR finished his Masters and did not pursue PhD. Formal education ended.
-
A8 → occult/astrological knowledge begins: Jupiter in Meena = sattvic, sign of Maharshis. A8 = manifested occult knowledge. After completing Masters, spent 6 months with his father, started seriously learning astrology. 1993 = beginning of continuous astrological pursuit.
— PVNR"I knew astrology basics from age 6-7, but every summer I'd learn, every winter I'd forget. In 1993, continuity started. Shani Dasha + Guru Antardasha = perfect combination for occult pursuit: Shani owns 8H (occult), Guru is in A8 (manifested occult knowledge), Meena is Maharshi's sign."
Note on accuracy of pratyantar dasha:
- 1-minute birth time error → 5-month displacement in antardasha dates
- For Lagna Vimshottari (discussed below), 1-minute error = ~5 months displacement (Lagna moves 30× faster than Moon)
- Pattern still follows; need rectification for hour-level precision
- Pandit Jagannath Rath (Sanjay Rath's grandfather) did rectification by hand using daily life events — took almost a full day
Key Rules for Dasha Analysis (Summary from Chart 1)
- When judging Mahadashas: Focus on planet's house placement from Lagna, lordship, and sign strength. Arudhas are secondary.
- When judging Antardashas: Arudhas are primary. What Arudhas is the antardasha lord occupying? What Arudhas does it have Argala on?
- A6 = competition/enemies: If the dasha/antardasha lord is in 12H from A6 → losses to competition = success without struggle.
- Malefics in 3H, 6H, 11H: Highly auspicious in any chart (D1 through D60). These are Upachaya houses where malefic energy is channeled properly.
- Karaka aspecting its own house: Like a project manager working on his own project — decisive and guaranteed results.
Example Chart 2: Leo Lagna (June 13, 1949, 10:55 AM, Palayamkottai)
Birth Data: June 13, 1949, 10:55 AM, Palayamkottai (77E44, 8N43)
Lagna: Simha (Leo)
This chart was given by a student. PVNR read it live in class, verifying it along the way.
Planet-by-Planet Reading with D-60 (Sashtamsa) Karma
Reading the D-60 amsa ruler for each planet reveals what karma from past lives that planet carries — what it will deliver in this life.
How to see D-60 amsas in software: Go to Basics tab → Amsa Rulers → Select D-60 in popup menu. Each planet shows which amsa (sashtamsa deity) it occupies.
Saturn in Lagna (Leo) — Sarpa Sashtamsa
- Saturn for Leo Lagna: Owns 6H (functional malefic — agenda opposes Lagna's agenda). Being in an inimical sign (Leo = Sun's sign; Sun-Saturn enemies) makes this worse.
- 6H lord in Lagna: Constant obstacles. Always some problem or the other to overcome. This can be a karma yogi's chart (always creating and overcoming obstacles), or it can show nagging troubles.
- Sarpa Sashtamsa: "Sarpa" = snake. Carries a Sarpa Yoga type of karma from past life. Results: person feels coiled by a snake constantly — unending obstacles. If Saturn is giving trouble in a period, this karma activates.
- Summary: Saturn sitting in Lagna (the head) = constant difficulty sitting on the head. Slow and recurring trouble (6H lord). The nature of the trouble is determined by the D-60 amsa → terrible past-life karma.
Ketu in 2nd House (Virgo) — Clear Voice
- From Ketu's Ashtottara Shatanama (108 names): "Dwiteeye Sputa Vagdhata"
- Dwiteeye = in the 2nd house
- Sputa = crystal clear
- Vag = speech
- Data = given
- Result: Ketu in 2H gives a very clear, bronze-like voice. No ambiguity in speech ("They don't say 'yeah, I think so...' — they speak like this. Very clear.")
- Enhanced here because Ketu is in Mercury's sign (Virgo) — Mercury and Jupiter are karakas for speech. Mercury's house + Ketu = undoubtedly eloquent, very good at expressing clearly.
Venus in 7th House (Aquarius) — Kriti Sashtamsa
- Kriti Sashtamsa: "Kriti" = Earth. "Kritisha" = ruler of the earth = king. A king sashtamsa — very benefic; shows power, authority, responsibility.
- Mercury-Venus parivartana: Venus effectively occupies the 10H (Taurus, its own sign). Venus owns 3H and 10H — through parivartana, 10H is owned AND occupied by Venus.
- Result: 10th house is very strong. Lagna lord Venus (through parivartana) gives excellent career heights. Person rises to great heights in career.
Sun in 10th House (Taurus) — Deva Sashtamsa + Paka Lagna
- Deva Sashtamsa: "Deva" = divine. Sun carries godly karma from past life. Blessings of gods on intelligence and activities.
- Paka Lagna (Lagna Lord): The Lagna lord is called Paka Lagna — it shows:
- Intelligence, maturity, and activities of the person
- How the person thinks, feels, acts, and behaves
- Lagna alone = circumstances (inanimate); Lagna lord = consciousness applied to those circumstances
- Maturity karaka: Jupiter. Important lord for maturity = Lagna lord.
- Sun in Deva Sashtamsa: Excellent wisdom, maturity, intelligence, and divine grace on actions.
— PVNR"Even though the person is subjected to constant trouble (Saturn on the head), the application of intelligence is very divine. Person is very intelligent, very mature — wisdom needed to overcome troubles comes from Sun in Deva Sashtamsa."
Moon in 5th House (Sagittarius) — Amrita Sashtamsa
- 12H lord (Cancer = Moon) in 5H (trine) = Lakshmi's blessings on 12H
- Rule: "If any house has its lord in a trine, that house will have the blessings of Lakshmi."
- 12H = house of giving, losses, donations. Lakshmi's blessings on 12H = unlimited capacity to give.
- Amrita Sashtamsa: "Amrita" = nectar, the undying. Without break, without stopping — this person will always be giving.
- Result: Person has excellent Daanabhaavana (capacity and inclination to give). Like Karna or Shivaji Kavati — someone famous for charity and giving without stopping.
Mars in 10th House (Taurus) — Vamsakshaya Sashtamsa
- Mars owns 4H (mother, home) and 9H (father, dharma)
- Vamsakshaya Sashtamsa: "Vamsa" = lineage, family. "Khaya/Shaya" = decay, blocking. Mars carrying this amsa → problem with family lineage growth. Not that everyone dies, but something blocks the growth/prosperity of the family.
- This is an inauspicious placement for the karaka of family matters.
The Dharma-Karma-Adhipati Yoga (Lakshmi Yoga) in 10H
Combining Sun (Lagna lord = 1L), Mars (9L = dharma lord), and Venus via parivartana (10L = karma lord) all effectively in 10H:
- 1L + 9L + 10L together in 10H = Lakshmi Yoga / Dharma-Karma-Adhipati Yoga
- Person is very dharmic, performs karma in society sincerely.
— PVNR"This is a very powerful chart. There is a great Lakshmi yoga. The person will be very dharmic, will do their dharma in society very sincerely."
But there are two drawbacks:
- Saturn in Sarpa Sashtamsa in Lagna = constant nagging worry
- Rahu in 8H in Ghora Sashtamsa = shocks and terrible karma
Rahu in 8th House (Pisces) — Ghora Sashtamsa
- 8H = troubles, sudden changes, anxiety, breaks, death (Mrityusthana). Also longevity (if strong) or death (if weak). Also occult knowledge.
- Rahu in 8H = sudden shocks, unexpected changes, deception, tension
- Ghora Sashtamsa: "Ghora" = terrible, horrible (name of a demon). Literally: dreadful.
- Result: Terrible karma from past life → bound to give setbacks, tensions, and shocks in this life.
- Distinction by planet in 8H:
- Mercury/Venus in 8H → controlled, manageable changes
- Mars in 8H → sudden aggression, injuries
- Saturn in 8H → sadness and prolonged trouble
- Rahu in 8H → shock. Associated with being cheated, suddenly deceived, something coming out of nowhere.
— PVNR"Overall the chart is pretty good. But Rahu in Ghora Sashtamsa is a terrible karma giving some shocks, some evil done to others in past life returning as Rahu sitting in 8H. Shani with Sarpa Sashtamsa = some sadness given to others in past life → now Shani sits on the head as constant obstacles."
D-60 Sashtamsa Summary Table
| Planet | D-60 Amsa | Quality | Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| Saturn | Sarpa | Malefic | Constant coiling trouble, snake-like karma |
| Venus | Kriti (King) | Benefic | Power, authority, kingly results in career |
| Sun | Deva | Benefic | Divine karma; excellent wisdom and intelligence |
| Mars | Vamsakshaya | Malefic/Mixed | Family lineage troubles, blockage of growth |
| Moon | Amrita | Benefic | Nectar; undying generosity; great giver |
| Rahu | Ghora | Malefic | Terrible/dreadful karma; shocks and severe setbacks |
Lagna Vimshottari vs Chandra Vimshottari
By default, Vimshottari Dasha is computed from Moon's nakshatra. However, it can also be computed from Lagna's nakshatra. The question is: which is appropriate?
| Starting Point | Appropriate When | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Chandra (Moon) Nakshatra | Moon is dominant; person is reactive | Moon = mind reacting to the world; strong when person is more mind-driven |
| Lagna Nakshatra | Lagna is dominant; person is proactive and independent | Lagna = individuality, self; strong when more planets are in Kendra from Lagna |
Test: Count planets in Kendra (1H, 4H, 7H, 10H) from Lagna vs from Moon. Whichever has more = that is dominant.
For Leo Lagna person: More planets in Kendra from Lagna → Lagna is dominant. Leo Lagna people are typically very independent, proactive, authoritative (Sun = king). Start Vimshottari from Lagna nakshatra.
How to set in Jagannatha Hora: Options → select Janakara → change from Chandra Sphuta to Lagna Sphuta
Dasha for Leo Lagna Person
Mahadasha running: Rahu Mahadasha (from approximately 1995–1996)
Is Rahu Dasha good? NO:
- Rahu in 8H = house of troubles
- Rahu in Ghora Sashtamsa = terrible karma
- Rahu = planet of the unexpected; in 8H = sudden shocks
Special note on Rahu and Arudhas:
— PVNR"In general, at Mahadasha level we do not look at Arudhas — that is for Antardashas. But Rahu is an exception. Rahu is a totally Maya planet. He is a pseudo planet derived from Moon, closely related to Moon. He hates Sun and will not obey Satya principles. So when judging Rahu Dasha, you can still apply the Arudha principle."
Rahu is associated with A6 (Roga Pada/Satrupada) in the Rasi chart → Rahu Mahadasha itself promotes disease (A6 = tangible disease manifestation).
Badhaka Sthana — Undiagnosable Troubles
Three types of obstacles in astrology:
| House | Type of Trouble | Nature |
|---|---|---|
| 6H | Obstacles you can see and overcome | Diagnosable, understandable |
| 8H | Sudden problems from past bad karma | Explained by cause-effect (even if unexpected) |
| Badhaka Sthana | Troubles with NO logical reason | Undiagnosable; from spirits, ghosts, black magic, past-life curses |
Badhaka Sthana Rules by Lagna Type:
| Lagna Type | Signs | Badhaka Sthana |
|---|---|---|
| Chara (Movable) | Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn | 11th house |
| Sthira (Fixed) | Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius | 9th house |
| Dvivsvabhava (Dual) | Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces | 7th house |
For Leo Lagna (Sthira): Badhaka Sthana = 9th house
Mercury is in 9H (Badhaka Sthana) = Mercury as antardasha lord brings Badhaka results:
- Troubles that cannot be diagnosed
- May originate from spirits, ghosts, tantric activities done against the person (in this life or past life)
- "Somebody may have done black magic against you in a past life. The results may have been postponed. You may be experiencing them now."
Saturn as lord of Badhaka Sthana (Saturn owns Aquarius = 7H; but for 9H Badhaka, lord of 9H = Mars) — Actually here, the key point is the antardasha sequence: Shani antardasha → Mercury antardasha → both activating Badhaka. Shani antardasha was also bad. Mercury is currently running.
Cure for Badhaka: When Badhaka is involved, scientific/medical cure is limited. Prayer is the primary remedy.
D-6 (Shashthiamsa) — Chart of Diseases
D-6 is the divisional chart specifically for diseases, obstacles, litigation, and enemies.
Key houses in D-6 for disease analysis:
| House in D-6 | Significance |
|---|---|
| 6H | Main disease house |
| 8H | Mrityusthana |
| 11H | Hara Sthana (6H from 6H = 11H). Named after Hara (a form of Shiva responsible for delivering troubles). NOT auspicious in D-6 context — means many diseases. |
Note: The 11H being called Hara Sthana is specific to D-6. In any other chart, Rahu in 11H gives gains. In D-6, gains in 11H = gains in disease = more disease.
Leo Lagna person's D-6:
- Rahu in 11H (Hara Sthana) in D-6 = very bad for health
- Rahu and Ketu both afflicting Sun in D-6 = Sun is eclipsed in the disease chart
Rule: If Sun or Moon is afflicted by Rahu/Ketu in D-6 → very bad for health.
- Sun afflicted → physical body troubles
- Moon afflicted → mental health troubles
- Here Sun is physically eclipsed → physical disease
Person's actual ailments: Diabetes (digestive/stomach) and Bronchitis (respiratory)
Rahu's control over A6:
- In Rasi chart: Rahu is in A6 (Roga Pada)
- In D-6: Rahu owns A6 AND has Argala on A6 (being in 2H from it)
- House lord having Argala on its own house → that house flourishes (here = disease flourishes)
- Conclusion: Rahu gives disease in this period with high certainty — multiple indicators confirm it
Body Parts Mapping (Naisargika Chakra — Natural Zodiac)
Always use the natural zodiac (Kaal Chakra) for body part mapping — not the natal lagna:
| House/Sign | Body Parts |
|---|---|
| 1H / Aries | Head and brain |
| 2H / Taurus | Face |
| 3H / Gemini | Neck + respiratory system (lungs) |
| 4H / Cancer / Moon | Heart |
| 5H / Leo / Sun | Stomach and upper abdomen (digestive system) |
| 6H / Virgo | Lower abdomen |
| 7H / Libra / Venus | Kidneys + internal reproductive parts (uterus, etc.) |
| 8H / Scorpio | External reproductive organs (physical, anus) |
| 9H / Sagittarius | Thighs |
| 10H / Capricorn | Knees |
| 11H / Aquarius | Legs |
| 12H / Pisces | Feet |
For this person:
- Sun afflicted by Rahu/Ketu → Sun governs digestive system (5H/Leo) → diabetes (digestive disease)
- Bronchitis = 3H/Gemini = respiratory → other planetary afflictions
Why not brain tumor? Because it would require Mars/1H (Aries) to be afflicted. Here Sun is afflicted → digestive system, not head/brain.
Disease Remedy
Primary: Strengthen Sun to fight Rahu-Ketu:
- Read Aditya Hridayam every day (or at minimum every Sunday)
- Recite Surya Gayatri daily
- Propitiate Sun through worship
Why Sun? Sun is the only planet capable of fighting Rahu (who is Sun's arch-enemy). With Sun strengthened, he can resist the Rahu-Ketu affliction in D-6.
Antardasha Predictions: Timeline
| Antardasha | Quality | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Saturn | Bad | Lord of Badhaka (or associated with Badhaka); activates undiagnosable troubles |
| Mercury (current) | Bad | Mercury in 9H = Badhaka Sthana for Leo; troubles from unknown/spiritual sources |
| Ketu | Bad | Ketu joins Rahu in D-6 afflicting Sun (vitality karaka); problems continue |
| Venus (approx. 2007-2008, ±1 year) | Good | Venus = Lagna lord; has Argala on trouble-causing planets; agenda = healing. During Venus antardasha, it will say "stop this" to Rahu and put an end to the problems |
— PVNR"Venus antardasha is extremely likely to put an end to the problems. Lagna lord Argala on trouble-causing planets will stop the trouble. The Argala is always manifested in Venus's antardasha."
Important: Rasi drishti from Venus on the troubled signs is always present — but Argala manifests its decisive results in the Antardasha period of the planet giving the Argala.
Dates are approximate because Lagna Vimshottari is used here — 1-minute birth time error = potentially 1+ year displacement.
