What a Gemstone Does

This comes up in the middle of the first chart. A student suggests pearls for the child, to strengthen the Moon in gaṇḍānta.

"If you wear pearl, it doesn't necessarily mean that you are strengthening Moon. Whatever Moon's results are, you are basically accentuating those results."

Accentuating Is Not Strengthening the Good Side

• The teacher's own case: Mercury and Venus give a rāja yoga in his chart and he is in Mercury daśā, so he wears emerald and diamond. That does not mean his Venus and Mercury are strengthened. Whatever they are giving in his chart is accentuated.
• You may call that strengthening the planet. But do not think you are strengthening its benefic side. If the planet is a bad planet for the chart, the bad result is what grows.

Case 1 — The Engagement That Broke

• A girl with Mīna lagna was engaged to a man she had chosen. Her father and the fiancé each gave her a necklace for the engagement — one of rubies, one of diamonds.
• Ruby is Sun, the 6th lord. Diamond is Venus, the 3rd and 8th lord. "The gift for engagement was 6th and 8th lords' gems. Not even a small ring — big necklaces."
• Within days the engagement broke. They tried to save it and could not. She was still wearing them when the family came to him; the family did not think it worth mentioning. She remained unmarried.
• The 6th and 8th lords were strengthened, and that strength was not wanted.

Possessing Is Enough

A student objects that she would not wear such necklaces every day.

• If you possess it and think of it as yours, the association is in the mind and it gives the result.
• The reverse holds too: something on the body that you do not associate with may not affect you.

"Even if I am not wearing it, if I think, oh, now I have a ruby necklace, oh, I have a diamond necklace — all these associations, they are not even physical. If it is at the mental level, if you have that association, it gives this result."

Case 2 — The 8th Lord's Stone That Made a Yogi

• A man in his early twenties, in bad company. Mīna lagna; Venus, the 8th lord, in own sign Tulā in the 8th with several other planets — a tapasvī combination, one who does much sādhana.
• A swāmi walked up to him, told him this was not how his life should be, and told him to wear a big diamond on the index finger of the right hand.
• From the day he wore it he went on the spiritual path, and later became a very good yogi.
• The fingers: index is mokṣa, middle is artha, ring finger is dharma, little finger is kāma.
• Strengthening the 8th lord was not bad for him because that was where he was destined to go. The daśās would have triggered it anyway; the swāmi wanted to accelerate it.

"You can't have a thumb rule that the 8th lord is always bad."

Wearing the 8th lord's stone is a bad idea if you are trying to get married, and perhaps if you want material success. It is case by case.

The Rule

"Instead of looking in terms of strengthening, see what is the planet's agenda. If the planet's agenda is good, then think of promoting the planet. Otherwise, you better pray to the planet."

Applied to the Child

• Pearl is refused: Moon is the afflicted planet.
• Diamond is accepted: Venus is the lagna lord and the planet that promises recovery.
• The teacher mocks trial and error — "this year pearl, next year ruby, didn't work, now try red coral; within nine years there will be a result".
• Gemstones are not the sāttvik kind of remedy, but in a case like this a push at the beginning is not a bad idea.

L9, the 9th House and A9 — Three Ways to See the Father

A student brings a question left over from Friday's session, where the same child's chart was being rectified through D-12: one student had taken the 9th house as the father's lagna, another thought it should be L9. The reading below is in the dvādaśāṁśa (D-12) of the chart in Part 2. D-12 lagna is Capricorn.

Which Reference Shows What

"Father as a separate intelligent person, separate living being with an attitude, with an intelligence — for that L9 is the best."

Finding L9

• The 9th house is Virgo. Its lord Mercury is in Scorpio.
• Count from the lord to the house: Virgo is the 11th from Scorpio.
• Count the same from the house: the 11th from Virgo is Cancer.
• L9 is Cancer. Take Cancer as the father's lagna.

Does He Believe in God? — The 9th from L9

The grandfather had said the father does not believe in God.

• The 9th from Cancer is Pisces. Ketu there is good and Venus is exalted — but Venus is the bādhaka lord for Cancer.

"Bādhaka lord in the 9th house is a combination for somebody who breaks idols. Don't take it literally. It's a classical dictum. It doesn't literally mean go to a temple, get an idol and break it. But basically, doesn't believe in God. In some cases, may even break the idols also."

• A link between bādhaka and the 9th is never good.
• Rāhu aspects the 9th from Virgo. Rāhu is the planet of logic and materialism, and here he is the 8th lord. The 8th is the 12th from the 9th — giving up religion. His aspect on the 9th is bad; on the bādhaka lord it is worse.
• The 9th lord Jupiter could have rescued the house. He is retrograde in Aquarius — an inimical sign, Rāhu's sign — in the 8th.
• The 9th is weak. He probably does not believe in God.

Stubbornness and Intelligence

• Stubbornness is the 3rd house, the house of initiative and determination — how hard you push your agenda. Rāhu is in the 3rd from Cancer, and Mars, the kāraka of the 3rd, aspects it. That makes him adamant.
• A student asks whether Rāhu in lagna would do the same. Rāhu in lagna etches the attitude on the character but is not enough; the 3rd has to be influenced by Mars, Rāhu and the like.
• Intelligence is the 5th house. Mercury is in the 5th from Cancer, in a Martian sign — quick. An intelligent person.
• The student had read intelligence from Virgo. Corrected: Virgo is only the role he plays in the daughter's life; L9 shows his own intelligence.

Dealing with People — The 7th from L9

The student says the father does not get along with people and points to Rāhu in A7. "Forget the A7. A7 is not father. Take L9." Only simple, general judgments about a parent can be made from D-12: who occupies the house, who aspects it, how its lord is.

• The 7th from Cancer is Capricorn. Empty.
• Mars aspects it (8th-house aspect), Rāhu aspects it (5th-house aspect), and its lord Saturn aspects it. Mars is aggressive, Rāhu cheating, Saturn suspicious. Not conducive to good relations.
• Saturn himself is not the weakness. He is in Aries and retrograde, and the teacher treats him as strong ("he is retrograde, but he is exalted — he is not bad actually"). The weakness is the malefics on the house.
• Capricorn is practical, dry, Saturnine. No tact: very dry, very matter-of-fact.
• From Virgo the 7th is Pisces with exalted Venus, which should give some tact. From L9 there is none.

Career — The 6th and 10th from L9

No details of the father were given; this is a general reading.

• 6th lord Jupiter is in the 8th, with Moon — Gaja-kesarī yoga. Moon and Jupiter are also the lagna lord and 9th lord from Cancer; lagna lord and 9th lord in the 8th is fortune in a faraway place, and their rāja yoga in a duḥsthāna says the same.
• 10th lord Mars is the yogakāraka for Cancer and is in the 12th.

"When the yogakāraka is in the 12th house, you should advise the person to leave the homeland. If he leaves the homeland, there can be fortune."

• Saturn, the 8th lord, is in the 10th; the 6th lord is in the 8th. Both work houses are tied to the 8th. An 8th-house career: research, digging into things. Astrology is a possibility on these factors, but nobody can look at a dvādaśāṁśa and say the father is an astrologer.
• A strong Jupiter gives a powerful position of the Jupiterian kind — not the king who makes the calls, but the minister who gives the right advice, the wise one in the group.
