Jaimini Sutras — Swamsa Combinations (Continued)

Before the sutras, a short recap of Lesson 79: 8 chara karakas for human beings, 7 for mundane charts and inanimate things; the arudha exceptions decoded last week.

Sun + Rahu in Swamsa

• Sutra: death due to snake venom.
• Extend Rahu to any reptile or nocturnal creature.
• Benefics aspecting: it does not happen; the same combination is put to good use — a doctor handling poisonous drugs, a toxicologist. Parasara adds that with benefic aspect it shows capability and the danger should not be predicted.
• Afflicted by malefics, the danger stands. Apply deśa-kāla-pātra: snakebite was common once, not in a city today.
• A student asks why Sun, the soul, is in a death combination. The teacher: Sun shows the person, Rahu the eclipse. A planet's karakatva differs by level — Sun is the soul at one level and the father at another. As sthira karaka the father is the stronger of Sun and Venus: Sun gives the soul, Venus the seed.

• Omen: while answering a question you see an ambulance or a fire engine go by — that is Venus, and auspicious. A police car is Mars: asked "will I be safe from an attacker?", it means yes.

"All planets do what their intrinsic nature is. When a fire is going on, you bring Jupiter, he will just spread it. Jupiter is an expansive planet."

• The tattva explains it. Otherwise one would ask how a benefic can burn a house. The teacher's picture: a footballer who kicks the ball into his own goal.

Garuda remedy: black magic (abhichara, "dur-mantra") is Rahu's influence. Rahu is the natural badhakesha — 11th lord of the Kalapurusha with Saturn, and the worse troublemaker. Abhichara is possible when the badhakesha is linked to the 6th lord. The remedy is to pray to Garuda: he controls snakes, and he is a bird — the karaka of birds is Sun.

Saturn + Rahu in Swamsa

• A seller or a consumer of betel leaves and aphrodisiacs. The teacher extends it to intoxicants and drugs.

Moon in 4th from Swamsa

• Produces a sailor. Moon is water; Venus also stands for ships; vehicles are seen from the 4th, and a watery planet there shows ships and boats according to its dignity.
• Venus aspecting Moon in the 4th surely gives a sailor or navigator.
• The teacher's father, 25–30 years in the merchant navy, has Venus with Moon in the 4th from Navamsha lagna.

Gulika Combinations

• Gulika shows addiction and poison. Rahu, Saturn, Gulika — the tamasic ones — incline to narcotics.
• Moon aspecting or joining Gulika in Swamsa → theft, or receiving stolen wealth. Mainly used in prasna — a stolen article, a missing person.
• Mercury joining Gulika → hydrocele and similar diseases of the private parts.

Ketu in Swamsa

• Ketu aspecting or joining Swamsa → perforated eardrums, ear ailments; it can go from partial to complete loss of hearing. It means after birth, not from birth.
• Parasara adds that malefics should join or aspect the combination.
• Aspect here means rāśi dṛṣṭi. "Graha [dṛṣṭi] shows just desire."
• Do not use Ketu alone. A student has Ketu aspecting and no ear trouble: few malefics aspect his lagna. Add it only when the other indications agree.

Ketu Combinations in Swamsa

Ketu's influence shows something abnormal — a turning away from the usual course.

How Tapasvi Yoga works: Saturn = hard work, Venus = passion, Ketu = detachment.

• Tapasya need not be about God. It is single-pointed determination with hard work and no attachment to anything else; a scientist can be a tapasvi of his subject.
• Saturn + Ketu without Venus: the robes and the show of detachment are there, the sustained passion is not. He suddenly changes — marries, or takes up with many women.

"Saturn is hard work, Venus is passion, Ketu is detachment. He has Saturn alone aspecting Ketu — so who is missing? Venus is missing. That passion is missing."

Sun + Venus on Karakamsa

• Sun and Venus aspecting or joining Karakamsa → a royal assignment is sure. Both show government and social-political work.

7th from Swamsa — the Spouse, and the Place of Mating

7th House from Swamsa (Spouse Nature)

• Sun: some say the spouse has a clandestine relationship with an elder of the family. Rejected — Sun, unless debilitated or badly afflicted, is not a malefic for spouse and children.
• Mercury: of the five Mahapurusha yogas only Mercury's is described as good-looking and skilled in the arts — not even Venus's Malavya.
• Saturn + Mercury in the 7th (a case): the wife was 7 years younger — Mercury took the age. Her own chart was Leo lagna with Saturn in lagna — Saturn took her character.

The 7th Shows the Spouse's Own Chart

• Planets in the 7th of Navamsha turn up strong in the spouse's chart: in the lagna, in its trines, or joined to the lagna lord.
• Then read the spouse from that 7th house like a chart — profession and all.
• Chart 1: Sun and Mars in the 7th → a husband with strong Sun and Mars. Chart 2 (Scorpio lagna): Sun in the 7th → Sun prominent in the wife's chart.

"Mars and Sun in the 7th house typically show that the spouse will have strong Mars and Sun. Either that or his lagna lord will be associated with such planets."

4th House from Swamsa (Place of Mating)

The 10th from a house shows where its activity is carried out. The previous sutras were on the 7th; the 10th from the 7th is the 4th.

• Illicit relationships are shown by the 2nd house. The 10th from the 2nd is the 11th — that house shows the place of illicit mating. The 4th is for the lawful spouse.
• The same principle: Swamsa shows the vocation; the 10th house shows the place where it is practised.

2nd House from Swamsa (Moral Character)

The 2nd house stands for the moral fibre of the native. A second way to see it: the 12th is the bed, the 3rd is parakrama, and the 2nd is the 3rd from the 12th.

• Ketu is the natural significator of emancipation and stops the evil of Venus and Mars. He works by being in the house or by rāśi dṛṣṭi — headless, he has no graha dṛṣṭi. "Ketu is the only solution, and that too it should not be obstructed by Mercury."
• Jupiter here is the same Jupiter that set fire to the house. Expansion is his nature, so he makes it worse. The same principle is behind the negative Jupiter in diseases like cancer, where cell growth is uncontrolled.
• Rahu is diabolical. The 2nd is also an Artha house, so the damage falls on wealth as well as on character.
