BPHS Chapter 24 — 5th Lord in the 4th, 5th and 6th Houses

5th Lord in 4th House

Results given by Parāśara:

• Sukhī — happy, peaceful, comfortable
• Mātṛ-sukhānvitaḥ — has happiness from mother
• Lakṣmī-yuktaḥ — has a lot of wealth
• Subuddhiḥ — good thinking, good intelligence
• Rājño 'mātyo 'thavā guruḥ — a minister to the king, or a teacher; someone respected by the king

Happy; happiness from mother:

• The 5th lord of judgment and emotions is in the 4th house of comfort, so he is happy.
• A student adds: a trine lord in a quadrant, the 5th and 4th connected, is the blessing of Lakṣmī and Viṣṇu.
• The 4th shows mother. Parāśara names mother, but he is happy with 4th-house matters in general: house, vehicles, property, education, peace of heart.

Wealthy:

• A student offers the 11th house of gains: from the 11th this planet is in the 6th. The teacher accepts it but asks for more.
• Gains are a flow; some of it goes out. To have Lakṣmī with you, wealth must be accumulated. What stays with you is the 2nd house. (The 8th is easy money.)
• From the 2nd house the 5th lord in the 4th is in the 3rd, an upachaya.

"Upachayas are always for accumulating, especially with money, especially with material things. They show abundance, they show growth."

• He has a lot of initiative about wealth and he accumulates it.

Subuddhiḥ (good intelligence):

• The 5th lord of intelligence is in a quadrant and has argala on lagna (the 4th from lagna). His basic nature is shaped by judgment and discretion.

Minister or guru:

• The 4th is the 12th from the 5th. The 5th is judgment, discretion, scholarship; in the 12th from it, he gives it away. He shares his judgment and scholarship with other people. He is in a counselling position and respected for it.
• Why a king? From the 4th the 5th lord aspects the 10th house by graha dṛṣṭi (7th aspect). A trine lord linked with a quadrant, the 5th with the 10th: a partial rāja yoga. The 10th is honour in society, so he brings honour in the king's court.
• The king need not be a literal king. It means a good position in society: a good counsellor, respected by many people and perhaps by the authorities.

The negative side, and how to read these verses:

• A student: being in the 12th from the 5th, can there be trouble with children? The teacher: yes, if the planet is afflicted. The 12th from a house is not only giving what you have; it is also being deprived, not having.
• In general a 5th lord in a quadrant is good. If he is afflicted, there are negative possibilities, and the student must find them.

"For various houses, there are various results. He is pointing out some so that we know how to think... He wants us to get used to thinking. He is not giving all possible results."

• The teacher's suggestion to the class: where Parāśara gives all positives, you supply the negatives.

5th Lord in 5th House (Own House)

Results given by Parāśara:

• Śubhāḍhye putravān — if auspiciousness dominates for the planet, he has children, good children
• Pāpāḍhye apatyahīnaḥ — if malefics dominate (the planet is a malefic, or is with malefics, and so on), no children
• Irrespective of that: Guṇavān — good character, good nature, intelligence; Mitra-vatsalaḥ — attached to friends, and friends are attached to him

Children or childless:

• A 5th lord in the 5th is excellent for the 5th house. He gives good children.
• If he is a malefic, weak and afflicted by malefics, the 5th house and the 5th lord are afflicted at the same time.

"You are putting all your eggs in the same basket. You are buying the same company shares, and if the company is a malefic company, you lose all your money."

• Parāśara is not telling you to look at a 5th lord in the 5th and hunt for childlessness. That is not the dominant result. The dominant result is that he is lucky with children.
• The lesson: even here childlessness is possible, provided the planet is weak and afflicted. Until this verse Parāśara has mostly not said whether the planet is benefic or malefic.

Guṇavān:

• He is a good learner: the planet is in own house and has argala on the 4th house (the 5th is the 2nd from the 4th).
• A student takes the 9th house of dharma: from there he is the 9th lord in the 9th, so he is righteous. The teacher: righteous is fine, but virtue is also spotlessness of one's actions in society, and that is the 10th house.
• From the 10th house of reputation and honour he is the 8th lord in the 8th. The 8th lord is normally bad, but the 8th lord in the 8th is Sarala Yoga.
• So for karma, honour and respect in society there is Sarala Yoga: a straightforward nature. He has a good reputation as an honourable person.

Mitra-vatsalaḥ (explained by a student, accepted):

• The 5th is the 7th from the 11th house of friends, so he shows interaction with friends, and from there he aspects the 11th by graha dṛṣṭi (7th aspect).
• He is always talking to friends and interacting with them.

5th Lord in 6th House

Results given by Parāśara:

• Putraḥ śatru-samo bhavet — the son becomes like an enemy
• Mṛtāpatyaḥ — or a dead child is born
• Datta-krīta-sutaḥ — or he has an adopted son or a purchased son (kraya = purchase). He gets a son from somebody else.

Bad luck with children: no child at all, or a child born dead, or a child who lives and is against him.

Why:

• The 5th lord of children is in the 6th house of enemies.
• Take the 5th house of the child as lagna: the 6th is the 2nd from it, a māraka sthāna.
• This applies especially in the saptāṁśa. In examples seen earlier in the course, the 5th lord in the 6th of the saptāṁśa showed the first child stillborn or aborted, and in a couple of cases lost very early, without the person even knowing.

The positive side:

Parāśara gave only negatives here, so the teacher asks the class for positives.

• If the planet is strong and Jupiter is strong and linked with the 5th house, it is not so bad. He will be all right with children.
• Take the 5th as the house of intelligence. The 5th lord in the 6th is Dhimanta Yoga, taught earlier in the course and recalled here by a student. The person is very smart at analysing things and puts his intelligence to use in overcoming obstacles.

Career luck (a student's result, beyond what Parāśara gives):

• A student asks whether he is at least honoured in society. The 10th is honour, respect and activity in society.
• From the 10th house the 5th lord is the 8th lord, and the 6th house is the 9th from the 10th.

"8th lord in the 9th robs the luck. And all this is from the 10th house. So luck in the career, he robs off the luck."

• He is not very lucky in career. Some fortune comes and goes away before fully blooming. He gets an offer, the economy turns, and the company calls to say there is a hiring freeze and the offer is withdrawn.

Closing:

"So like this, basically you can take any house as lagna, see what is going on with respect to that house."

• All of this looks at one planet in isolation. Do the same with every planet and you have your hands full.
