Katapayadi System — Name-to-Sign Activation, Jaimini's Arudha Exceptions Decoded & 4 Yugas

Katapayadi Divarga: Jaimini encrypted his sutras using Sanskrit syllable encoding so they could not be misused in Kali Yuga. Algorithm: (1) Take consonants of the name you are commonly called; (2) find each syllable's value (ka=1, kha=2… ya=1, ra=2, la=3, va=4, ṥa=5, ṣa=6, sa=7, ha=8); (3) concatenate digits and reverse them; (4) divide by 12 for sign (Aries=1…Pisces=0) and by 9 for planet (Sun=1…Ketu=0). Example: Manoj → ma(5)+na(0)=50 → reversed=05 → 5÷12 R5 = Leo. Arudha exceptions encoded in two stanzas: "swaste daraha" → remainder=4 → if lord is in 4th from house, the 4th itself is the Arudha; "sutaste janma" → remainder=7+10 → if lord is in 7th from house, the 10th becomes Arudha. The 4 Yugas and the Kalapurusha quadrants: Satya Yuga=Aries (Sun exalted, pure tapasya); Treta Yuga=Cancer (Jupiter exalted, dharma); Dwapara Yuga=Libra (Saturn exalted, yoga practice); Kali Yuga=Capricorn (Mars exalted, Jupiter debilitated = technology peak but wisdom lowest). Jaimini was Parasara's student — the Upadesa Sutras are an elaboration/commentary, not a separate system.

"There is no Jaimini system versus Parasara system — it is all one. Jaimini was Parasara's student. He wrote a thesis elaborating on what Parasara emphasized."

— P.V.R. Narasimha Rao

Context — PVNR Absent; Jaimini Sutras Begin

  • PVNR decided (last class, Lesson 78) to begin reading BPHS chapter by chapter — that thread will continue when he returns
  • Substitute teacher (studies under Pt. Sanjay Rath) chose to cover Jaimini Maharishi's Upadesa Sutras in parallel
  • "There is no Jaimini system vs Parasara system — it is all one. Jaimini was Parasara's student. He wrote a thesis elaborating on what Parasara emphasized."
  • Reference translation used: Pt. Sanjay Rath's translation of Jaimini Sutras (preferred over Iranganti Rangacharya, B.V. Raman's grandfather Suryanarayana Rao)

The 4 Yugas and Planetary Correspondences

The 4 Yugas map to the 4 quadrants of the Kalapurusha (Aries→Cancer→Libra→Capricorn):

YugaSignExalted PlanetQuality
Satya Yuga (Krita)AriesSunHighest ideals, pure tapasya
Treta YugaCancerJupiterDharma, meditation, still high
Dwapara YugaLibraSaturnYoga practice, quality declining
Kali YugaCapricornMarsIntelligence lowest (Jupiter debilitated), might rules, technology highest

"In Kali Yuga, Mars is exalted and Jupiter is debilitated. Technology is at its peak but wisdom is at its lowest."

Katapayadi Divarga — The Sanskrit Numerical Encoding System

What It Is

  • Katapayadi (ka-tha-pā-yā-di) = a numerical encoding system based on Sanskrit syllables
  • Jaimini used this to encrypt his sutras so they could not be misused in Kali Yuga
  • "Read literally, the Sanskrit words appear meaningful but the rules won't work. Apply the decryption algorithm and the clear practical rule emerges."
  • The name "Upadesa Sutras" = Advisory Stanzas — he is elaborating/commenting on Parasara, not creating new doctrine

The Encoding Table

Sanskrit consonants are grouped (ka-group, tha-group, pha-group, ya-group) and assigned values 1–9 and 0:

Position1234567890
Ka groupkakhagaghaṅacachajajhaña
Tha groupṭaṭhaḍaḍhaṇatathadadhana
Pha grouppaphababhama
Ya groupyaralavaśaṣasaha

Vowels (a, ā, i, ī, etc.) have no value — only consonants count. "Vowels give life to consonants. A consonant alone (like a halanta) has no life — don't count it."

Algorithm for Name → Sign

  1. Take the name as people actually call you (not formal name — the in-use pronunciation)
  2. Extract the consonant syllables; ignore pure vowels and terminal half-consonants (halanta)
  3. Find each syllable's numeric value from the table
  4. Concatenate the digits → get a 2-digit (or more) number
  5. Reverse the digits → get a new number
  6. Divide by 12; take the remainder → count from Aries (1=Aries, 2=Taurus… 0=Pisces)
  7. That Rashi is activated when people call you by that name

For the planet activated: Same process but divide by 9 (not 12); count in weekday order: Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu, Ketu (1=Sun, 2=Moon... 0=Ketu)

Examples from Class

NameSyllablesValuesReversed÷12 RemainderSign
Sheshu (sh+sh)śa + śa6+6=6666→66 (same)66÷12=5 R6Virgo? (65÷12=5 R5=Leo)
Rama (Ra+Ma)ra + ma2+5=25→5252÷12=4 R4Cancer
Manoj (Ma+Na, halanta j ignored)ma + na5+0=50→05=55÷12=0 R5Leo
Vijaya (Va+Ja+Ya)va+ja+ya4+8+1=481→184184÷12=15 R4Cancer

Interpretation of activated sign: Look at what house that sign is in the natal chart. See the planets there. Those planets get "activated" every time someone calls you by that name.

Example: "Seju" activates Leo (9th house for Sagittarius lagna). Leo has Sun + Rahu → calling someone Seju activates their 9th house Sun AND Rahu simultaneously.

Notes on Name Versions

  • Different versions of your name activate different signs → different effects
  • North Indian tendency to shorten (Ram vs Rama) may change the computation
  • Pet names used by close family have specific effects — often connect to comfortable/nurturing houses
  • "If somebody with Jupiter in 9th house in Leo, and you call them by a name that activates Leo — that is a very auspicious name for them"

Katapayadi Used to Decode Arudha Exceptions

Jaimini encoded the two Arudha Pada exceptions using Katapayadi:

Stanza 1: "swaste daraha"

  • swa → value computation → remainder = 4
  • dara → value computation → remainder = 4
  • Meaning: If the lord of a house is in the 4th from it, then the 4th house itself is the Arudha
    • (Normally you'd count 4 forward = 7th, then 4 more = 11th; but if that falls on the lagna = exception → go 4 houses further from there, landing on 4th)

Stanza 2: "sutaste janma"

  • suta → remainder = 7; janma → remainder = 10
  • Meaning: If the lord of a house is in the 7th from it, then the 10th house becomes the Arudha
    • (Exception: Arudha cannot fall in the same house or 7th → take 10th instead)

"These words look like Sanskrit poetry but they are actually numerical codes that embed the exception rules."
