Katapayadi System — Name-to-Sign Activation, Jaimini's Arudha Exceptions Decoded & 4 Yugas
Katapayadi Divarga: Jaimini encrypted his sutras using Sanskrit syllable encoding so they could not be misused in Kali Yuga. Algorithm: (1) Take consonants of the name you are commonly called; (2) find each syllable's value (ka=1, kha=2… ya=1, ra=2, la=3, va=4, ṥa=5, ṣa=6, sa=7, ha=8); (3) concatenate digits and reverse them; (4) divide by 12 for sign (Aries=1…Pisces=0) and by 9 for planet (Sun=1…Ketu=0). Example: Manoj → ma(5)+na(0)=50 → reversed=05 → 5÷12 R5 = Leo. Arudha exceptions encoded in two stanzas: "swaste daraha" → remainder=4 → if lord is in 4th from house, the 4th itself is the Arudha; "sutaste janma" → remainder=7+10 → if lord is in 7th from house, the 10th becomes Arudha. The 4 Yugas and the Kalapurusha quadrants: Satya Yuga=Aries (Sun exalted, pure tapasya); Treta Yuga=Cancer (Jupiter exalted, dharma); Dwapara Yuga=Libra (Saturn exalted, yoga practice); Kali Yuga=Capricorn (Mars exalted, Jupiter debilitated = technology peak but wisdom lowest). What It Is
- Katapayadi (ka-tha-pā-yā-di) = a numerical encoding system based on Sanskrit syllables
- Jaimini used this to encrypt his sutras so they could not be misused in Kali Yuga
- "Read literally, the Sanskrit words appear meaningful but the rules won't work. Apply the decryption algorithm and the clear practical rule emerges."
- The name "Upadesa Sutras" = Advisory Stanzas — he is elaborating/commenting on Parasara, not creating new doctrine
The Encoding Table
Sanskrit consonants are grouped (ka-group, tha-group, pha-group, ya-group) and assigned values 1–9 and 0:

Vowels (a, ā, i, ī, etc.) have no value — only consonants count. "Vowels give life to consonants. A consonant alone (like a halanta) has no life — don't count it."
Algorithm for Name → Sign
- Take the name as people actually call you (not formal name — the in-use pronunciation)
- Extract the consonant syllables; ignore pure vowels and terminal half-consonants (halanta)
- Find each syllable's numeric value from the table
- Concatenate the digits → get a 2-digit (or more) number
- Reverse the digits → get a new number
- Divide by 12; take the remainder → count from Aries (1=Aries, 2=Taurus… 0=Pisces)
- That Rashi is activated when people call you by that name
For the planet activated: Same process but divide by 9 (not 12); count in weekday order: Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu, Ketu (1=Sun, 2=Moon... 0=Ketu)

Interpretation of activated sign: Look at what house that sign is in the natal chart. See the planets there. Those planets get "activated" every time someone calls you by that name.
Example: "Seju" activates Leo (9th house for Sagittarius lagna). Leo has Sun + Rahu → calling someone Seju activates their 9th house Sun AND Rahu simultaneously.
Notes on Name Versions
- Different versions of your name activate different signs → different effects
- North Indian tendency to shorten (Ram vs Rama) may change the computation
- Pet names used by close family have specific effects — often connect to comfortable/nurturing houses
- "If somebody with Jupiter in 9th house in Leo, and you call them by a name that activates Leo — that is a very auspicious name for them"
Katapayadi Used to Decode Arudha Exceptions
Jaimini encoded the two Arudha Pada exceptions using Katapayadi:
Stanza 1: "swaste daraha"
- swa → value computation → remainder = 4
- dara → value computation → remainder = 4
- Meaning: If the lord of a house is in the 4th from it, then the 4th house itself is the Arudha
- (Normally you'd count 4 forward = 7th, then 4 more = 11th; but if that falls on the lagna = exception → go 4 houses further from there, landing on 4th)
Stanza 2: "sutaste janma"
- suta → remainder = 7; janma → remainder = 10
- Meaning: If the lord of a house is in the 7th from it, then the 10th house becomes the Arudha
- (Exception: Arudha cannot fall in the same house or 7th → take 10th instead)
