Katapayadi System — Name-to-Sign Activation, Jaimini's Arudha Exceptions Decoded & 4 Yugas

Context — the Jaimini Sutras Begin

• PVNR is away for a couple of weeks. In the previous class he decided to go through BPHS chapter by chapter; that thread is left for him to continue.
• The guest teacher takes up Maharishi Jaimini's Upadesa Sutras in the same systematic way.
• There is no separate Jaimini system. Jaimini was one of Parasara's students. Around the start of Kali Yuga he saw the need to elaborate on what Parasara had emphasised — "like a research student who specialised in a certain branch and wrote a thesis."
• Upadesa Sutras = advisory stanzas. He did not write it on his own; he comments on Parasara, elaborates, and gives his detailed understanding.
• Translation followed: Pt. Sanjay Rath's. Others exist (Iranganti Rangacharya; the B.V. Raman edition, written by his grandfather Prof. Suryanarayana Rao).

"Just a note of clarification: there is no Jaimini system of prediction or Jaimini system of astrology. They are all the same. He is one of the students of Parashara."

The 4 Yugas and Planetary Correspondences

The four Yugas are signified by the four quadrants of the Kalapurusha.

Why Jaimini encrypted the sutras

• Jaimini saw what Kali Yuga would bring: many frauds, and scriptures falling into the wrong hands and being misused.
• So he encrypted his sutras with an algorithm — the earliest form of encryption.
• Read as plain Sanskrit, a stanza looks like a shloka. Apply it that way and it never works; people give up and throw the book away.
• Decrypt it with the right algorithm and you get clear-cut stanzas that are very practical.

The table

The name comes from the consonant groups: ka-, ṭa-, pa-, ya-ādi varga. Write each group horizontally and number it 1, 2, 3 … 9, then 0 (not 10).

"This is the fundamental of Vedic numerology."

Rules for the syllables

• Break the word into its aksharas (syllables). Each consonant gives one digit.
• Vowels give life to consonants. A bare consonant (halanta) has no life and is not counted: a final "-j" or "-d" with no vowel is dropped.
• Conjunct consonants (as in pra): take only the first consonant. The life is shared by both, and only one takes it.
• The three sibilants differ: śa = 5 (as in Śanivāra), ṣa = 6, sa = 7. Which one people actually pronounce changes the result.

Algorithm: name → sign and planet

1. Write the digits of the syllables in order.
2. Reverse the digits.
3. Divide by 12 and take the remainder → the sign, counted from Aries in the Kalapurusha (5 = Leo, 9 = Sagittarius, 11 = Aquarius).
4. Divide by 9 and take the remainder → the planet, in weekday order followed by Rahu and Ketu: Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu, Ketu (remainder 2 = Moon).
5. Sign and planet are separate effects. Judge both.

Student: "Why did you reverse it?" — "That is the algorithm. The decoding algorithm."

How to read the result

• Find which house that sign is in your rasi chart. The planets in that house get activated every time someone calls you by that name.
• If the sign is empty, its lord gets activated — see where the lord sits.
• It is not "good" or "bad" by house number. Analyse it like any other house: planets in it, aspects on it.
• Many malefics there can be a problem. Jupiter in the 9th activated by the name brings fortune.
• A student asked whether Mars, Rahu, Ketu, Saturn in the 9th would be trouble. Answer: not in the 9th; in the 8th house and the like it is more likely to cause trouble.

Worked examples from class

Sri Rama is worked as a public example ("Sri" is a mark of respect, not part of the name). The rest are students' own names; only the syllables are given here.

How the teacher read them:

• Leo, 9th, Sun + Rahu. Both are felt, not Rahu alone. The 9th house is good and Leo is especially good because the Sun is there — karaka of the 9th in own house, stable. But Rahu tries to eat up the Sun: a slight disturbance, from an outsider.
• Leo, 6th, Moon (5th lord). "Is 6th house activation bad?" — it depends on the planets. Jupiter in the 6th is very good. The 5th lord connected with the 6th is Dhimanta Yoga. See the aspects on the house as well.
• Aquarius, 7th, Ketu (4th lord). The 7th is the house of interaction. A student offered "comfort in interaction" because of the 4th lordship; the teacher refused it — Ketu is not a planet of comfort, Ketu causes misunderstanding. Then see the other influences on the 7th, such as Jupiter's aspect.
• Gemini → Mercury in the 4th. Not everyone's pet name connects to the 4th house, but a pet name linked to the 4th with benefics is good: it is given out of affection, and the good vibrations are invoked.
• Cancer → Moon exalted in the 12th. Very good; a benefic in the 12th is good.

Which version of the name?

• Use what people call you. The full name can be worked too; calculate each version and see how each affects you. A long name, a short form and a pet name can give different signs.
• What counts is how people pronounce it, not how you want it said. If the name has śa and ṣa but people say sa and śa, the second calculation applies. Above, the same name moves from Leo to Sagittarius.
• A pet name that swaps bha (4) for ba (3) changes the number — "that is the effect of corruption."
• North India cuts names short (Ram); the South expands them (Rama). Whether the dropped final syllable should still be counted is contentious. It was debated on the Vedic astrology list without settlement; experiment and see.

Why sound, not spelling

• The teacher gives this far more weight than English-letter numerology, which has no such basis.
• The Sanskrit syllables were not coined by an author. Millions of nadis run through the body; at 52 places they intersect distinctly and a sound emanates. Those are the aksharas.
• Chanting a mantra activates those bunches of nerves. That is why bija mantras give siddhi and health — the sound works on the inside of the body.

Is this the same as naming by nakshatra?

A student asked whether Indian names, chosen by birth star, already carry this. Answer: no. Naming by nakshatra only fixes the starting syllable for the star. It has nothing to do with this method, which breaks the whole name into its syllables. Two names starting with the same syllable give different values.

Katapayadi decodes the Arudha exceptions

The Arudha of a house cannot fall in the house itself or in the 7th from it. Jaimini gives the two exceptions in two stanzas:

"svasthe dārāḥ"

• sva → 4; dāra → 28 ÷ 12 → remainder 4
• If the lord of a house is in the 4th from it, the 4th house itself is the Arudha.
• Counting 4 from the lord lands on the 7th house, which is not allowed; the 10th from there is the 4th house.

"sutasthe janma"

• suta → 67 ÷ 12 → remainder 7; janma → 58 ÷ 12 → remainder 10
• If the lord of a house is in the 7th from it, the 10th house is the Arudha.

"The Sanskrit words themselves don't mean anything. You may try and decipher the words, but it might not make any clear meaning."
