PVNR's Chart — Sagittarius Narayana Dasha Three-Parts Analysis (1985–1995)

Setting Up the Three Parts

• Sagittarius is Prishtodaya → the sign takes the last third
• Its lord Jupiter is in Libra, a Sirshodaya sign → Jupiter takes the first third
• The middle third is left for the associations. No planet occupies Sagittarius. Only the Sun (Pisces) aspects it by rasi drishti. Arudhas and upagrahas are not counted.

The dasha is 10 years with 12 antardashas of 10 months each. Each third = 4 antardashas = 40 months. Each quarter of a third = one antardasha = 10 months.

The theme of the whole dasha is Sagittarius, the 4th house. PVNR was 15 when it began, so the 4th house reads mainly as education — though it is also mother, vehicle and real estate. Everything Jupiter gives here, he gives as Sagittarius lord.

Jupiter's Slot: 4 Quarters (Benefic — Occupied House First)

Jupiter is in the 2nd house (Libra), owns the 4th and 7th, and is retrograde.

Quarter 1 (Apr 1985 – Feb 1986, Libra antardasha): House Occupied = 2nd

• 2nd house = wealth, resources, money
• Not just any planet in the 2nd: the 4th lord in the 2nd, in the dasha of the 4th house → money connected with education
• A student offers real estate. PVNR: a very good guess for the 4th house, but he was too young to gain anything in real estate.
• What happened: in the 10th standard he took the National Talent Search Examination (NCERT), cleared its stages and the interview, and was awarded the scholarship — a monthly amount for his studies that ran for some years, into his IIT years.

Quarter 2 (Feb 1986 – Dec 1986): Houses Owned = 4th and 7th

• 4th = learning, studies. 7th = relations, associations, getting to know people; as 7th lord he can also give marriage.
• The 4th stays the seed, because Sagittarius is the 4th house.
• What happened: he was at a government residential junior college, boys only. Nothing special — studying, travelling, getting to know a lot of people.

Quarter 3 (Dec 1986 – Oct 1987): Jupiter's Yogas

Yogas are judged by graha drishti, not sign aspect. A student offers Rahu, Moon and Ketu (sign aspects on Libra); PVNR sets them aside.

• Jupiter in Libra and Mercury, Venus, Saturn, Mars in Aries are in samasaptaka — mutual graha drishti.
• The three trine lords are all in Aries: Mercury (lagna lord), Saturn (5th lord), Venus (9th lord). Jupiter is a kendra lord (4th and 7th). So:
  • Jupiter–Mercury = Raja Yoga
  • Jupiter–Venus = Raja Yoga — and these two are extremely close in degree
  • Jupiter–Saturn = Raja Yoga
• Guru-Mangala Yoga with Mars
• Kalanidhi Yoga: Jupiter in the 2nd or 5th aspected by Mercury and Venus (graha drishti)

"This Aries-Libra is the important axis in this chart. All the yogas in the chart are in the 2nd and 8th house axis."

• Expected: excellent results in 4th and 7th house matters — recognition and success in education.
• What happened: in May 1987 he stood state first in the Intermediate (+2) examinations and was selected in the IIT entrance exam. "The foundation for my professional life after that was laid out during that period."

Quarter 4 (Oct 1987 – Aug 1988): Jupiter's Avastha

• Not exalted, not debilitated. Retrograde — "also a bad state".
• In Libra, Venus's house. Jupiter and Venus are natural enemies — the teacher of the gods and the teacher of the demons.
• Tatkalika (temporary) relationship: planets in the 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 10th, 11th, 12th from a planet are its temporary friends; planets farther away are temporary enemies. Venus is in the 7th from Jupiter → temporary enemy.
• Natural enemy + temporary enemy = adhishatru. Jupiter, the 4th lord, is in an inimical house.
• A student adds that the software shows Jupiter in Dukhita avastha — distressed. PVNR accepts it.
• Expected: education average, not good. The most negative results of Jupiter's whole third come here.
• What happened: his first year at IIT Madras. He was in the middle of the class, having always been at the top.

"I was just relaxed. I took it easy. No specific reason... Libra is Venus's sign. Enjoy it, relax. So that's exactly what I did."

Had the Intermediate and entrance exams fallen in this antardasha instead of the yoga quarter, he says, he would not have stood state first or got into IIT — "I would have taken a different path" — even though his other dashas were fine.

The Range of Results

The chart sets a range of what is possible. The dasha moves the result within that range.

• A planet in adhishatru sthana does not mean "you will flunk all your exams".
• A planet in adhimitra sthana in a chart with a weak D-24 does not mean state first or university topper.
• When a planet gives the result of a bad state or a bad yoga, the result bottoms out within the range. When it gives the result of a good state or good yogas, it peaks.

So in Jupiter's avastha quarter he was not at the bottom of the class — Jupiter and Sagittarius are basically well placed — only in the middle.

Sun's Slot: 4 Quarters (Malefic — Avastha First)

There is only one associating planet and it has 40 months. To see further, PVNR divides the Sun's portion into four by the same rule used for the lord.

The Sun is in Pisces, the 7th house, aspecting Sagittarius by rasi drishti. He owns the 12th house (Leo).

Quarter 1 (Aug 1988 – Jun 1989): Sun's Avastha

• A student calls the Sun "kind of debilitated" because he is setting. PVNR: that is not debilitation.
• Friend's house: Sun is in Jupiter's sign. Sun is the king, Jupiter the priest. A sattvic king in the house of a learned pundit enjoys the discussion and relaxes, before going back to court. Sun is also karaka of dharma. A friend, though not adhimitra: Jupiter is not within three signs of the Sun, so he is not a temporary friend as well. Moderately well placed.
• Uchcha Bala 54 out of 60 — he is close to Aries.
• Sayanadi avastha: Nrityalipsa — desirous of dancing.
• The software also shows Kumara, dreaming and Dina (sad, helpless), which a student points out. PVNR: there will be some helpless side, but put everything together and the Sun is in a good state.
• Sun gives position and authority; he makes kings. His aspect on the 4th house can put one at the top in studies.
• What happened: in his third semester at IIT Madras (Aug–Dec 1988) he decided to focus on studies and stood first in his class by a huge margin. That margin kept him at the top for a few more semesters before he slipped to second rank towards the end of the four years.

Quarter 2 (Jun 1989 – Apr 1990): Sun's Yogas

The Sun has no conjunction, opposition or exchange with another planet. The class finds:

• Papakartari Yoga — malefics on both sides of the Sun (Aquarius and Aries)
• Bhaskara Yoga — from the Moon, Sun in the 2nd, Mercury in the 3rd, Jupiter in the 9th. Result read out: wealthy, well dressed, aristocratic, learned in shastras, astrology and music. A yoga of good learning.
• Sun with Gulika — Sun at 20°52' Pisces, Gulika at 20°23' Pisces. A bad conjunction is also a yoga, and this one is "a very important yoga, but a terrible yoga". Sun afflicted by Gulika can show bad health.
• The 4th house is also mental peace, sukha. A malefic aspecting the 4th gives sukha lopa; a Gulika-afflicted Sun aspecting it, far more.
• What happened: studies stayed good, but he had breathing trouble — allergic bronchitis — and was on medication for a while.

Quarter 3 (Apr 1990 – Feb 1991): House Owned = 12th

• 12th house = losses, expenditure, giving; also settling abroad (Ketu is in the 12th).
• A student guesses "teaching". PVNR: the logic is not perfect, but it is correct — the lord of the house of giving aspecting the 4th means giving a lot in education.
• 12th lord's influence on the 4th house of studies → thinking of studying abroad. This is the Sun as 12th lord, not the Sun as giver of power.
• What happened:
  • He taught his fellow students a lot. He took meticulous notes in three colours — blue, red and green — which he never read himself: "I used to take notes so that people can benefit from it." There was a sign-up list outside his room for borrowing them before exams.
  • He and his classmates shared out the universities among themselves, got recommendation letters and filled in applications. Going abroad was the focus of the period.

Quarter 4 (Feb 1991 – Dec 1991): House Occupied = 7th

Houses for going abroad:

• 7th = travelling abroad; 9th = flourishing abroad; 12th = settling abroad
• The 3rd is general travel and the 8th general instability — they can be involved, but they are not the answer PVNR wants
• Badhakasthana — "a very important house for going abroad"

Badhakasthana:

• The house of obstruction.
• Movable signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn): the 11th from them
• Fixed signs (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius): the 9th from them
• Dual signs (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces): the 7th from them

"Planets in the badhakasthana, planets owning the badhakasthana, they can take the person abroad."

• Lagna is Virgo, a dual sign, so the 7th — Pisces — is the badhakasthana. The Sun sits in it and aspects the 4th house.
• What happened: in this antardasha he left India and came to the USA for his Master's.

"That is why I came abroad for studies, not for career, because the focus is the 4th house. A badhakasthana planet aspecting the 4th house can show going abroad for studies."

Sagittarius Sign Slot (Dec 1991 – Apr 1995)

No rule is known for subdividing the sign's own third. Read the sign: its nature, its house from lagna and Arudha Lagna, and the signs aspecting it.

• Sagittarius = 4th house → learning, education, sukha
• Sagittarius = 2nd house from Arudha Lagna (Scorpio)
• Aspected by rasi drishti by Pisces (7th house), Gemini (10th house), Virgo (lagna)
  • 7th house aspecting the house of sukha → vivaha sukha; marriage is possible
  • 10th house → career can start
  • Lagna → health; taking good care of it ("earlier I was not taking good care of my health")

PVNR gives these as the results possible in this third and does not go through the events.
