BPHS Ch.93 — Abhukta Mula Shanti: Jyeshtha-Mula as Most Dangerous Gandanta, Full Procedure & Nirriti Idol
Jyeshtha-Mula border = most dangerous of all three Nakshatra Gandantas: Jyeshtha's deity = Indra (king of gods); Mula's deity = Nirriti/Rakshasa (a demoness) — "due to the great enmity between Rakshasa and Indra, this joint is Mahadosa — particularly great danger." Parashara's drastic prescriptions: give up the child (ritual adoption by brahmin for karma transfer) OR father should not see the child's face for 8 years. Practical: do the Shanti. Timing: from 12th day after birth; ideal 13th-25th day; latest = before 8th year ("after 8 years, if nothing bad happened, the danger period is probably over"). Shanti procedure: East or North of house; four-door pandal; Pitha for kalashas. Nirriti idol: black/dark-gray, very angry, two-headed, wolf-faced, holding sword (khadga) + wrapped in skin, seated on a corpse. Gold substitute: "If no idol available, put gold there and invoke the devata — gold can carry any devata just as fire does." Three main deities: Nirriti (center, facing west, white akshat + white cloth), Indra (guardian of Jyeshtha), Jala Devata (water gods). Kalasha: main + 9 navagraha kalashas wrapped in planetary colors, filled with 100 herbs + panchakvaya. Homam: Indra mantra (108/1000 ahutis) + Trayambakam Yajamahe + Navagraha mantras. Post-homam: Abhisheka over native+parents. Mantra: "Yat-papam yach-cha medaushtham...tat-sarvam bhakshayatvam, Lakshmim pushtim cha vadhaya." Minimum remedy: Mahamrityunjaya homam alone.
"Parashara says: give up the child — or for eight years the father should not see his face. Today we cannot follow those literally. But the purpose is fulfilled if you do the Shanti properly. The result: all sins of the Mula Gandanta birth are destroyed."
— P.V.R. Narasimha Rao
BPHS Chapter 93 — Abhukta Moola Shanti
Most dangerous Nakshatra Gandanta: Jyeshtha–Moola border
Why most dangerous:
- Jyeshtha's deity = Indra (king of gods)
- Moola's deity = Nirriti/Rakshasa (a demoness)
- "Due to the great enmity between the Rakshasa and Indra, the joint between those two nakshatras is considered to be Mahadosa — particularly great danger."
Drastic measures from the text: Parashara says: "Abhukta-mola-jam putram putrim va paritya-jet" — If a boy or girl is born in Abhukta Mula, give up that child. Or: "Athabda-ashtakam tat-pita tan-mukham na vilokayet" — Or, for eight years, the father should not see the face of the child.
Practical interpretation:
- "Give up" = formally adopt out and buy back (ritual karma transfer: a brahmin takes on the baby's bad karma by participating)
- "Not see for 8 years" = too impractical in modern times
- "If nothing else, just do the Shanti. That is what we would rather do."
Timing of Shanti:
- Ideally: 12th day from birth onwards (avoid before 12th day)
- Or: any auspicious day in the neighborhood (13th–25th day)
- Latest: 8th year of the child's life (when the dangerous period is still active)
- "If you forget to do it then, do it in the eighth year running. After 8 years, if nothing bad happened, the dangerous period is probably over."
Shanti Procedure — Abhukta Mula
Setup (Mandapam):
- Location: East OR North of the house
- Level, auspicious ground; smeared with cow dung (gomaya)
- Four-door pandal/tent (openings on all four sides so wind enters from all directions)
- Pitha (table/raised platform) inside for kalashas
Idol of the Nakshatra Devata (Nirriti):
- Black or dark-gray in color
- Very angry-looking
- Two-headed
- Wolf-faced or very fierce/terrible face
- Wearing sword (khadga) + wrapped in skin (carma)
- Seated on a dead body (vehicle)
- Made with as much gold as affordable
If no idol available: "Just put some gold there and invoke the devata. Gold is capable of carrying various deities, just like fire is."
Three Main Deities:
- Nirriti/Rakshasa (nakshatra deity) — facing west; worship with white akshat + white cloth
- Indra (adi-devata of Nirriti; the guardian of Jyeshtha, whose enmity with Nirriti is the cause)
- Jala Devata (water gods — pratyadhi devata)
Kalasha Setup:
- Main kalasha + additional navagraha kalashas (9 kalashas for 9 planets, each wrapped in their color cloth)
- Fill with sanctified water + 100 kinds of herbs/aushadhis + panchakvaya (five sacred items)
- Clay pot or bamboo pot also placed
Homam:
- Homakunda placed outside the pandal
- Indra mantra: 108 or 1000 or 100 ahutis
- Trayambakam Yajamahe (Mrityunjaya): for relief from death-like problems
- Graha mantras also (graha-adi yajna implied by "grahadi yagnartham")
- "Parashara says grahadi — meaning grahas etc. So Navagraha homam is also expected."
Post-Homam:
- Abhisheka: pour all kalasha waters over native (husband + wife + child), done with affection (pritya)
- Additional bath with cloth-wrapped kalashas (navagraha kalashas)
- After bath: wear white clothes, smear with vibhuti (white-colored sacred ash)
Dakshina and Bhojana:
- Give a milk-giving cow (payasvini dhenu) to the acharya, based on capability
- Give fee to all rtviks (Vedic chanters)
- Feed brahmanas
Mantra to recite: "Yat-papam yach-cha medaushtham sarva-gatresha-vasthitam, tat-sarvam bhakshayatvam, Lakshmim pushtim cha vadhaya."
"Whatever sin, whatever bad state is in the entire body — please remove it all. Increase wealth and increase pusha."
(This is Chapter 93, Verse 19 in Santanam's BPHS — repeat this a few times as a mantra)
Result: "Mula-gandhodbhavasya evam sarva-papam pranashyati" — All sins of the person born in Mula Gandanta are destroyed.
If full procedure cannot be done:
- Minimum: Navagraha homam OR Mahamrityunjaya homam
- "At least just get a Mahamrityunjaya homam done with Trayambakam mantra. That is the crux."
Q&A — Gandanta Chart Rectification
Problem: Moon at 0°4' Sagittarius — could be Jyeshtha (Scorpio) or Moola (Sagittarius) depending on ayanamsa or birth time precision.
PVNR's approach:
- If time is unverified: consider BOTH Scorpio and Sagittarius Moons as possibilities
- Rectify using transits at important events (marriage, promotion, accidents) — "See which sign makes more sense"
- If Navamsha or Dashamsha already rectified and lagna is confirmed to narrow range: use that
"In such border cases, you have to consider Moon on both sides. Only 7 minutes difference in birth time = different nakshatra."
If Moon is in Jyeshtha: Do Jyeshtha Shanti (Nakshatra Shanti for Jyeshtha). Not Abhukta Mula Shanti.
