Muhurta Charts, Ghatika Lagna, Yogada & Special Yogas
Muhurta charts for political candidacy — moment of filing nomination as birth of the candidacy, not the person. Ghatika Lagna (GL): source of power and authority. Yogada: planet associating with both lagna and GL gives power during its dasha. Graha Malika Yoga (garland of planets in consecutive houses), Kala Sarpa and Kala Amrita Yoga, Sarpa and Mala Yoga definitions and their results in practice.
"A planet that is associated with BOTH regular lagna AND Ghatika Lagna becomes a Yogada."

Muhurta Charts for Political Candidacy
When Birth Data Is Hidden
- Many politicians hide or float multiple fake charts (Sonia Gandhi has 3, Karunanidhi has 3, Vajpayee has 2 different years)
- The solution: The moment of filing nomination or taking oath is public, telecast live — cannot be hidden
- The place where nomination was filed = place of birth of the candidacy
- The time of filing = the muhurta time
Mundane Charts — Key Rules
- Not a person's chart — a candidacy, presidency, or political entity is born
- Divisional charts: In mundane charts use only 6–7 vargas (not all 16); the meaning of each varga also changes
- Rasi chart is primary — meanings of houses remain the same, but applied to the entity (candidacy), not a human being
- House significations in mundane charts:
- 1H = existence of the candidacy
- 2H = resources
- 3H = initiative
- 4H = comforts
- 5H = abilities, popularity, recognition, power
- 6H = obstacles, overcoming them
- 7H = desires, relationships, pursuing them
- 8H = setbacks, tensions, sudden changes (can be good or bad)
- 9H = dharma followed, protection received
- 10H = karma, achievement
- 11H = gains
- 12H = losses
Example Chart Analysis — 2004 Election
Chart 1: Vajpayee Nomination (2004)
- Cancer lagna rising
- LL Moon in 8th house (Aquarius) — very inauspicious
- Rule: Never choose a muhurta with Moon in the 8th house — 8th house is Moon's Marana Karaka Sthana; it brings anxiety and tension to whatever you start
- Moon = mind; putting mind in the 8th house (tension, anxiety) when starting something = bad muhurta for material pursuits
Chart 2: John Kerry Nomination (July 29, 2004, 10:21 PM, Boston)
- Pisces lagna
- LL Jupiter in 6th house (Leo)
- 5th house = Cancer (power, popularity)
- Jupiter is in the 2nd from 5th house = Maraka sthana of power = end of the pursuit of power
- Also Jupiter in 8th from GL = setback in pursuit of power
- Conclusion: Not an auspicious muhurta for running for power
Chart 3: George Bush Nomination (Sep 2, 2004, 10:10:12 PM, Manhattan)
- Aries lagna
- LL Mars + 5th lord Sun in 5th house (Leo) = Maharaja Yoga (LL + 5L together in 5H)
- Sun at 17°, Mars at 21°8' = within 6° = strong Raj Yoga
- Mars is ahead of Sun, and Sun moves faster → Sun will catch up with Mars = Raj Yoga will fructify in near future (approaching conjunction = good; receding = past)
- Moon + Rahu in Lagna:
- Lagna at 25°, Rahu at 10°45' (moving backward), Moon at 7°5'
- Moon will first catch Rahu (at ~10°) — eclipse by Rahu = setback in popularity
- But Moon continues forward to Lagna at 25° — public support returns
- Interpretation: large setback, then recovery of popular support
- Combustion note: Mars combust by Sun is not a problem — both are agni planets; fire doesn't fear fire; even for Jupiter combustion is not bad; Venus combustion is the worst (water evaporated by fire); Mercury+Sun = Budha-Aditya yoga (intelligence)
Ghatika Lagna (GL) / Ghati Lagna
Definition
- GL = shows existence from the point of view of power and authority
- Normal lagna = basic existence; GL = power-oriented existence
How to Use GL
- See which house GL occupies from regular lagna — that house shows the source of power:
- GL in 3H from lagna → power comes through drive and initiative
- GL in 5H → power comes from popularity and ability
- GL in 7H → power comes from interactions/relationships or desire
- GL in 8H → power comes through sudden unexpected events; a setback precedes the rise to power
- GL in 10H → power comes through karma and achievement
- Take GL as lagna and see how planets are placed from it
- In Bush's chart: GL in Scorpio; Mars and Sun are in 10th from GL (karma sthana) = very well placed
Yogada
Definition
— PVNRA planet that is associated with BOTH regular lagna AND Ghatika Lagna becomes a Yogada.
What Counts as "Association"
- Owning the sign (lordship)
- Occupying the sign
- Rasi drishti (sign aspect) on the sign
- Note: Only Rasi drishti counts for Yogada — Graha drishti does NOT count
Results of Yogada
- The planet promises power; its themes/significations indicate the path to power
- In Bush's chart: Mars is Yogada (owns lagna Aries, owns GL Scorpio, placed in 5H from lagna)
- Mars → war, security, defense = the issue that brings him power
- Jupiter in 6th = 2nd from 5H (power maraka) → economy is NOT his strong suit for gaining power
Graha Malika Yoga
Definition
- When 4 or more consecutive signs are each occupied by at least one planet (include Rahu and Ketu)
- All 9 planets (Sun through Ketu) are counted
Results
- Great achievement; auspicious yoga
- Seed planet = planet in the first occupied sign — shows what starts the great achievement
- Culminating planet = planet in the last occupied sign — shows what the achievement leads to
Example (Bush Nomination Chart)
- Saturn (Gemini) → Sun+Moon+Rahu (Aries) → Sun+Mars (Leo) → Ketu (Taurus)
- Seed = Saturn → hard work, ground operation
- Culmination = Ketu → conservative agenda, religiousness, fulfillment of desire
- The Graha Malika hasn't reached its culmination at election time; full impact in next 4 years
Kala Sarpa and Kala Amrita Yoga
Definition
All 9 planets hemmed between Rahu and Ketu (both sides):
- Ketu first, then planets, then Rahu → Kala Amrita Yoga (Amrita = nectar, moksha path)
- Rahu first, then planets, then Ketu → Kala Sarpa Yoga (Sarpa = snake, problematic)
Results
- Kala Sarpa: Highly problematic; suppresses other yogas; person may become like Rahu — a scoundrel, thief, bhoga marga; setbacks throughout life
- Kala Amrita: Setbacks and suppressed yogas, but person eventually becomes saintly, spiritual; goes toward moksha marga
Timing
- Both yogas function mainly until age ~40–43; important life events around that age break the person out of the yoga
- After ~43, the person can break out, though Kala Amrita yoga's effect is desired to continue
Exceptions (to breaking the yoga)
- Planet in a kendra from lagna
- Exalted planet
- Some say: exalted planet in kendra = can fully break it (= Mahapurusha yoga)
- Lagna outside the Rahu-Ketu arc: some schools say this breaks or reduces the yoga; not universally accepted
Bush Chart Note
- Moon and Rahu are in same sign, but Moon is behind Rahu in degrees
- Technically Moon is in the "other half" (between Ketu and Rahu) → Moon breaks the Kala Amrita
- So no true Kala Sarpa/Amrita yoga in Bush's natal chart
Sarpa Yoga and Mala Yoga
Sarpa Yoga
- 3 malefic planets in quadrants (kendras: 1H, 4H, 7H, 10H) from lagna
- Moon usually not counted for this yoga
- Results: Person is very unlucky, wretched, feels coiled by a snake; constant setbacks, unpleasant personality
- When this yoga breaks (around 40s with Kala Sarpa too), person can become very spiritual (like Valmiki)
Mala Yoga
- 3 benefic planets in quadrants from lagna
- Results: Like a garland of flowers; very lucky and fortunate person
