Tithi Pravesha — The Annual Lunar Chart
Tithi Pravesha (TP) is the annual chart cast for the birthplace at the moment the birth tithi returns with the same fraction elapsed. The lord of the sunrise-based hora at that moment rules the year, and Tithi Ashtottari Dasha times events inside it. PVNR works four cases: his 1987 TP (state first rank and IIT selection in a 19-day Sun dasha), his 1994 TP (going abroad, with Rahu 11 minutes of arc from the Jalapatana Sahama), a student's marriage (Navamsa Lagna rectified from Virgo to Libra, then the 2003-04 TP), and the same student's 2004-05 TP. The Panchanga lords act as the king's cabinet; the Yoga Lord governs the binding of people.
Key principle
This technique is not found in any literature. Either Parasara's works or Jaimini's works that are available today do not have this technique. However, this comes from our tradition. Pandit Sanjay Rath was taught by his grandfather, and his grandfather was taught by his guru.
Introduction to Tithi Pravesha (TP) — Lunar Annual Chart
Why an Annual Chart
- The natal chart is static: one chart for the whole life, timed with dashas and antardashas.
- That is often not enough. A student had asked whether his brother would pass a professional examination whose results were due in ten days. A good 2–3 year period does not say whether it is this attempt or the next. The D-24 Lagna itself may be wrong.
- Pratyantardashas and transits (gochara) help, but neither is reliable for "next month" or "next week".
- Tithi Pravesha is the approach PVNR used to answer that question.
What Is Tithi Pravesha?
Western astrology uses the solar return: the chart for the moment the Sun returns to its natal position, about 365.2425 days later. It falls within a day or two of the calendar birthday.
Tithi Pravesha uses the lunar birthday. Pravesha = entry; Tithi Pravesha = entry into the tithi. PVNR translates it as the "lunar return chart" and abbreviates it TP.
In India the birthday is traditionally kept on the tithi:
- Rama → Chaitra Shukla Navami
- Krishna → Krishna Ashtami
- Buddha → Vaishakha Purnima
- Guru Nanak → Kartika Purnima
The TP moment:
- Note the tithi of birth and how much of it had elapsed at birth.
- Each year, when the same tithi of the same lunar month returns and exactly the same fraction has elapsed, cast a chart. Example: born on Chaitra Shukla Tritiya with 10% of the tithi over and 90% left → cast the chart when Chaitra Shukla Tritiya is again exactly 10% over.
- That chart is the Tithi Pravesha chart of the year.
Where the Technique Comes From
"This technique is not found in any literature. Either Parasara's works or Jaimini's works that are available today do not have this technique. ... However, this comes from our tradition. It is not something that I conjured up. Pandit Sanjay Rath was taught by his grandfather, and his grandfather was taught by his guru."
- Traditions kept the techniques that work best as secrets, taught only to trusted students.
- Pandit Sanjay Rath and PVNR decided to reveal it, so that people can experiment, research and refine a knowledge that has picked up corruptions in person-to-person transmission. They presented it together in a one-day tutorial at a conference in California a couple of years before this class.
- "Time will decide whether this is a good decision or bad decision, because elders had reason for keeping them secret."
"This is actually the technique that I used in the last 5 years. 90% of the correct predictions that I made to people came based on this particular technique instead of using Vimshottari Dasha."
The caveat that goes with it: he uses Vimshottari and the rest as well. If the natal chart does not hold the basic potential for an event, you cannot predict it just because an annual chart shows it.
Key Principles of the TP Chart
- Everything else is read as in a natal chart — houses, lords, Arudhas, Argala, divisional charts. The chart simply applies to one year, not to the whole life.
- Difference 1 — the Hora Lord rules the year (below).
- Difference 2 — do not use Vimshottari Dasha in the TP chart. "It does not work perfectly." Use Tithi Ashtottari Dasha, a variation of Ashtottari Dasha based on tithis. In the software it is under the "other dashas", and linked from the Tithi Pravesha tab.
- Cast it for the birthplace. Same longitude, latitude and time zone as birth, wherever the native now lives. Do not relocate.
- Pick the right year. For someone born in November, an event in January 1987 belongs to the TP chart of 1986.
- Go to the divisional chart of the matter — Navamsa for marriage, D-24 for learning. The rasi chart of the TP alone often gives a good prediction; the divisional chart confirms it.
- Check the Lagna of that divisional chart. If it is close to a border, try both signs and see which explains what is already known. Make sense of the past before predicting the future.
- PVNR says there are more principles special to TP; he leaves them for another class.
TP for rectification (a student's question): yes. The time windows of a divisional Lagna in the natal chart and in a TP chart do not line up. If a known event forces the TP Navamsa Lagna to be one sign and not its neighbour, that gives a second window. The birth time lies in the intersection of the two.
Hora Lord — The Ruler of the Year
The planet whose hora (planetary hour) is running at the moment the year begins is the ruler of the year — "the planet who possesses you for the year", the king.
- See which houses he owns and where he sits, in the rasi chart and in the divisional charts, and how strong he is. That gives the main theme and the main events of the year.
- Whatever any other planet wants to give, the king has to grant it.
Two horas are shown in the software:

Mahakala stands for Saturn — systematic, disciplined, fixed-clock time that does not respect the Sun.
Example 1: PVNR's 1987 TP Chart (State First + IIT Selection)
The events: on May 28, 1987 the higher secondary results were announced on the radio news around 7 PM — PVNR stood first in the state, with a total that was a record for the decade. On June 1, 1987 (he thinks the 1st, possibly the 3rd) the IIT entrance results came and he was selected for IIT Madras. He was 17.
Born in April, with events in May–June → the TP chart of 1987 itself. The engine places this TP at about 12:31 AM IST on March 28, 1987; PVNR does not read the moment out.
Rasi Chart of the TP
- Lagna: Sagittarius.
- Hora Lord: Jupiter — the ruler of the year.
- Jupiter owns the 1st and the 4th (Pisces), and sits in the 4th. The 1st is the very essence of one's being, and health. At 17, still studying, the 4th house is education. The 4th lord in the 4th is well placed → an important event of the year relates to learning.
- Raja Yoga: Jupiter owns quadrants (1st, 4th). The Sun owns the 9th (Leo), a trine. A quadrant lord and a trine lord together in one sign — or aspecting each other from the 1st and 7th — is a Raja Yoga. Quadrant lords stand for Vishnu (effort); trine lords stand for Lakshmi (blessings, the fruit). Together: effort meets its fruit.
- How tight: Jupiter at 12°20' Pisces, Sun at 12°54' Pisces — within about half a degree. The closer the two planets, the more surely the yoga gives.
- Friends: a Raja Yoga between enemies is not so auspicious. Sun and Jupiter are good friends.
- The 4th and 9th together: education and fortune (the 9th can also show going to a faraway place).
- Sun and Jupiter are in the Arudha Lagna (Pisces). AL is the image. Without the AL this could have been just good learning, or finding a good guru. With the AL, in the 4th house, it is an image boost through learning.
"People who didn't know me until then, suddenly they knew me. ... He is from our town. He stood state first with a record score. So suddenly my image was boosted."
Tithi Ashtottari Dasha
- Sun dasha: May 27 to June 14, 1987 — 19 days.
- State results: May 28 evening, the day after Sun dasha began.
- IIT results: June 1.
- The Sun is the 9th lord, with the 4th lord, in a Raja Yoga with the ruler of the year. He gave Jupiter's results too, because they are together.
- Either Sun or Jupiter can deliver the yoga. Which one is settled by further principles (Shadbala, who is more advanced in the sign) that PVNR leaves out.
D-24 of the TP
- D-24 Lagna: Pisces.
- Sun in the 3rd house (Taurus). The 3rd, 6th and 11th are good for malefics — Sun, Saturn, Mars, Rahu, Ketu.
- Sun owns the 6th (Leo) — overcoming obstacles, beating the competition. 6th lord in the 3rd → success. That is the truth of the matter, from Lagna.
- Sun is in the Arudha Lagna of D-24 (Taurus) → what the world thinks. The image that rose was an image in learning. In D-20 of the same TP the Sun is not in AL and is not well placed, so the image had nothing to do with spiritual activity.
- A5 is with the Sun too. The 5th is abilities; A5 is their tangible manifestation — awards, prizes, a rank, "state first". Arudhas always show tangible things. Being smart is not tangible; a rank announced on the radio is.
- This is why the result came in Sun dasha and not in Jupiter dasha.
A Student's Question: Beginning, Middle or End of a Dasha?
- For Vimshottari Dasha there are principles (nature of the planet, nature of the sign). They work 70–80% of the time. For a later class.
- For Tithi Ashtottari Dasha PVNR knows of no such principle.
- One can go to the antardashas, but judging them needs more theory. Timing to within 19 days is already a good result.
Sahamas — Sensitive Zodiac Points
- Sahamas are sensitive points of the zodiac for particular matters of life. They are listed in the software with their meanings.
- Nilakantha gives many. Arabic and Persian astrology has some of them — the Part of Fortune is like the Punya Sahama.
- The word: the Sanskrit is sahamam (punya sahamam, vidya sahamam). Drop the final -m, a vibhakti pratyaya, as with bhavam → bhava, and you get sahama. In North India, under Arabic influence, the final -a is dropped as well — Rama → Ram, bhava → bhav, sahama → saham. PVNR says "sahama".
The two sahamas for going abroad:

PVNR's method: he finds the sahamas afresh in each year's TP chart. He does not progress the natal sahamas.
A student's suggestion: progress the planet toward the sahama within the year, to find how many days into the year the event falls. PVNR: such techniques exist; it does not look like it works in this case; a good area for research.
Example 2: PVNR's 1994 TP Chart (Going Abroad — November 10, 1994)
PVNR sets it as an exercise: an important event around November 9–10, 1994, in Saturn dasha. What was it?
TP data: April 9, 1994, 4:46:56 AM, cast for the birthplace. Lagna: Pisces.
Tithi Ashtottari Dasha: Saturn dasha, November 5 to December 7, 1994.
Reading Saturn
- Saturn owns the 11th and 12th. He is in the 12th, in own sign (Aquarius). Own sign → a good event of the 12th house.
- Students' guesses, and how each is tested:
- Spiritual progress? Check D-20. There (Virgo Lagna) Saturn is lord of the 5th (devotion) and the 6th (overcoming obstacles) and sits in Lagna — his Marana Karaka Sthana. Saturn in Lagna spoils the houses he owns. Devotion suffered in Saturn dasha. Not that.
- Marriage? The 12th house does not show marriage. Upapada does.
- Giving something up, a large donation — possible meanings of the 12th, not the event.
- The 12th also shows displacement from the motherland. The 9th and 12th are the houses of foreign travel. The 9th is the house of prosperity: going to a country more prosperous than your own shows in the 9th. The 12th in general shows leaving the motherland.
Rahu

"Rahu is not only the 12th lord, not only the karaka for going abroad, not only in the 9th house, not only in watery sign, but he is within 11 arc minutes from Jalapatana sahamam. So without any doubt, if you see this, you can say this person will go abroad during this year."
The Timing
- Either Rahu or Saturn could give it. PVNR has no strong reason why it came in Saturn dasha and not in Rahu dasha.
- He was in Chennai on the night of November 9 and took the flight around 2 AM on November 10 — still Saturn–Jupiter antardasha.
- He landed abroad around 3–3:30 PM on November 10 — well after Saturn–Rahu antardasha had begun.
D-4 of the TP — Why Saturn Delivers
A student asks whether D-4 should show it. The same Lagna, Pisces, rises in D-4.
- Rahu is again in the 9th.
- Saturn is in the 3rd house (Taurus) — the house of travel. He will give travel that year.
- From Taurus Saturn has graha drishti (10th aspect) and Argala on the 12th house, Aquarius. So the travel is a displacement from the motherland.
The three kinds of influence:
- Rasi drishti — a permanent influence.
- Graha drishti — a desire. It may or may not happen.
- Argala — it must happen, at a particular time.
When does it fructify? Look at the planet's relation with his dispositor and with the karaka.
- Saturn is in Venus's sign. Venus has command over him, and Venus and Saturn are friends — the group manager approves.
- The karaka for going abroad is Rahu. Rahu and Saturn are close friends — the project manager takes him onto the project.
So Saturn gives the result, in Rahu antardasha. It could also have come in Saturn–Venus, Venus being the boss.
Returning From Abroad
A student asks what shows the return. PVNR's rule: a planet not tied to the 9th and 12th — say the 8th lord, the lord of breaking things — aspecting the 12th or the 9th breaks the residence in the foreign country. The Jalapatana Sahama is not what to look at for this. He has no example chart at hand. The published class notes place this rule in D-4, the chart he had just been reading.
Method Notes From This Example
- Test principles only on events that have happened. A student offered his own plan to go back. PVNR refuses: you end up justifying what you want to do, and using it to justify a half-baked principle. Circular logic.
- The annual chart shows what stands out in the year — going abroad, a rank, a marriage, the start of divorce proceedings. A flight delayed by a day may not show at all. There are monthly and daily charts as well; in the daily chart that delay is the whole day.
- Intuition: the 12th house could mean ten things, and intuition still has to choose. The more sophisticated the technique, the smaller that role. PVNR wants replicable principles, not predictions that come true through intuition.
- Sun-sign and Moon-sign columns: not science. Read the column of some other sign for a while and it will seem to fit just as well.
Example 3: Student's Marriage — Navamsa + TP (2003-04)
The question, from a student in the class: the marriage was fixed for October 19, 2003. It took place on February 1, 2004. Why the delay?
Birth data as noted: March 18, 1981, 5:25 PM, time zone 5:30 east of GMT. The time is approximate. She says it can be off by 5 minutes, not by 10 or 15.
Step 1 — Vimshottari Dasha
- Sun Mahadasha (6 years).
- October 19, 2003 fell in Moon antardasha, close to its end — the changeover to Mars antardasha shows as about November 6, 2003 and could itself be off by a few days.
- The marriage on February 1, 2004 fell in Sun–Mars.
Step 2 — How Far Can the Navamsa Lagna Be Wrong?
Before anything else, see how the Lagna moves:
- 9 minutes 12 seconds earlier → the previous Navamsa Lagna.
- 4 minutes 23 seconds later → the next Navamsa Lagna.
With an error of up to 5 minutes, the Navamsa Lagna is Virgo (as noted) or Libra. Leo is not likely.
Step 3 — Test Mars, the Antardasha Lord
Marriage is shown by the 7th house and by Upapada.
- Virgo Navamsa Lagna: Mars sits in Lagna and owns the 3rd and 8th. No link with the 7th or with Upapada. Mars giving marriage is unlikely.
- Libra Navamsa Lagna: Mars owns the 2nd and the 7th. He sits in the 12th (Virgo), and is still a prime planet for giving marriage.
"Second house normally we say is the house of family, but in the chart of Dharma, this is the resources you need for Dharma. So you need the family infrastructure, the marital relationship — that is the resource you need for following your dharma."
- Mars and Upapada (Sagittarius): Mars has rasi drishti and graha drishti (4th aspect) on it. No Argala — a student asks, and PVNR points out that Mars is in the 10th from Upapada, not the 2nd, 4th or 11th. Upapada is the formal wedding itself, so Mars can give the ceremony.
- Mars and the 7th house (Aries): he is its lord and has full graha drishti on it by his 8th aspect.
Step 4 — Test the Sun, the Mahadasha Lord
For a Mahadasha look at the house owned and occupied.
- With Virgo Lagna the Sun is in the 12th in own sign — Vimala Yoga. Some chance, not strong. He has Argala on Venus, the karaka of marriage, from the 3rd from Venus.
- With Libra Lagna the Sun is in the 11th house (Leo) — a Kama Trikona (3rd, 7th, 11th), the final gains. He has rasi drishti on the 7th house and, strong in own sign, the special 5th-house Argala on the 7th.
- Now the Sun Mahadasha can give marriage, and Sun–Mars makes sense.
Step 5 — The Other Candidates
- Jupiter owns Upapada and sits in the 7th house. But for Libra Lagna he owns the 3rd and 6th. The 6th lord in the 7th is bad for marriage. He is not likely to give marriage; he is likely to give quarrels. PVNR warns the couple about Jupiter's antardasha in 2005: quarrels in the relationship, and since Jupiter is Putrakaraka, possibly over matters of children.
- Saturn and Ketu have Argala on the 7th house. Their antardashas come much later than Mars, and they do not have a good relationship with the Sun. Venus is the project manager for marriage, but for these 6 years the Sun is the project lead, and he does not like them.
- So Mars is the default planet. Had Mars antardasha passed without marriage, PVNR would have predicted Saturn's antardasha, ahead of Ketu's.
Result of the Rectification
- The Navamsa Lagna is Libra, not Virgo.
- The birth time is not 5:25 PM. The software moves it by the least amount needed — about 5:29:30 PM — and the true time lies there or within the next 13–14 minutes.
- Later in the class (Example 4) PVNR nudges it to 5:30 PM. The Navamsa does not change.
TP Chart for 2003-04 (Marriage Year)
The Tithi Pravesha year of 2004 began on April 3, 2004 — after the wedding. So one chart covers both dates: the TP of 2003.
TP data: March 16, 2003, 9:35:28 PM, cast for the birthplace. Rasi Lagna Libra; Navamsa Lagna Pisces.
Is the TP Navamsa Lagna safe? It changes only if the time moves 4 minutes 23 seconds back or 9 minutes 47 seconds forward. Unlikely to be wrong.
Hora Lord: Venus — the ruler of the year.
Yoga Lord: Rahu (the Panchanga cabinet is explained in the next section).
- In the TP rasi chart Rahu is badly placed (8th house, Taurus) → some quarrels and unpleasant dealings with people that year.
- In the TP Navamsa Rahu is in Lagna. Lagna is a fresh start; a planet in Lagna is in a trine and a quadrant at once. An important person may come into life that year. Marriage is possible.
- From the Hora Lord: Rahu is in a trine from Venus in both charts — rasi: Venus in Capricorn, Rahu in Taurus; Navamsa: Venus in Cancer, Rahu in Pisces. The king cooperates with Rahu's effort to give a new relationship.
Which houses give what:
- 7th house — the spouse; meeting the person. A planet tied to the 7th can bring the relationship, not necessarily the wedding.
- Upapada — the marriage itself.
- 9th house — dharma. A marriage by traditional rites is a dharmic procedure, so the 9th matters.
- Lagna — never ignore it, least of all in Navamsa, where it is the beginning of dharmic life. A planet in Lagna or the Lagna lord, tied to Upapada, the 9th or the 7th, counts.
- 6th and 8th — bad for marriage. The 8th: needless tensions. The 6th: quarrels and breaking. The 6th is the 12th from the 7th — the loss of meeting.
Jupiter in the TP Navamsa:
- Lagna lord, in the 9th house (Scorpio).
- Rasi drishti on Upapada (Aries); graha drishti on the Lagna.
- Lagna lord = a new beginning. In the 9th = a dharmic procedure in which a new beginning in dharmic life is made. Jupiter can give the marriage.
Mars in the TP Navamsa:
- Lord of Upapada (Aries) with rasi drishti on it, and 9th lord with graha drishti on the 9th. He has the desire to give the religious ritual of marriage.
- But he sits in the 6th house (Leo). A student objects that the 6th is a good house for Mars. PVNR agrees — for overcoming obstacles. For marriage any planet in the 6th shows quarrel. Mars may want to give and not be able to.
Tithi Ashtottari Dasha:
- October 19, 2003 fell in Mars dasha. There was talk of marriage. Mars, in the 6th, could not deliver it.
- The marriage on February 1, 2004 came in Jupiter dasha, Rahu antardasha — the Lagna lord in the 9th, and the Yoga Lord sitting in Lagna.
Panchanga — The Cabinet of the Year
Explained in the middle of Example 3. Pancha = five, Anga = limb: the five limbs of time, five ways to measure the quality of a moment. They correspond one-to-one with the five elements.
The Hora Lord is the king of the year. He has a cabinet — one planet responsible for each area.

Akasha Tattva is not the sky, though the word literally means sky. Earth, water and fire can be seen. Akasha has no form and fills everything. It is what binds everything together; without it all falls to pieces.
"So yoga is what binds people together. Yoga means being together actually. The literal meaning is being together, togetherness."
Reading the Yoga Lord:
- In Lagna or a trine from Lagna → a good event; in a dusthana → a bad one.
- When an important person enters life — a meeting, a marriage, a child — the Yoga Lord is well placed.
More than the placement from Lagna, look at the placement from the Hora Lord. See where the Yoga Lord, the Tithi Lord and the Karana Lord sit from the king. If the cabinet member and the king are on good terms, the king grants what the minister asks.
Example 4: The Same Student's 2004-05 TP — Children, and Starting Astrology
TP year: begins April 3, 2004. Hora Lord: Moon. Yoga Lord: Mercury.
Would a Child Come This Year?
PVNR poses it as a practice question. Look at the Saptamsa of the TP.
- The Moon, king of the year, is the 8th lord there.
- He is with the 5th lord Mars — but also with Ketu.
- Not a great year for getting a child.
When Did She Start Learning Astrology?
Tithi Ashtottari Dasha: Venus dasha, May 13 to July 22, 2004.
Houses and planets of astrology:
- 8th house — intuition and occult understanding.
- 2nd house — making predictions.
- Jupiter and Ketu — astrological knowledge, above all pure knowledge that comes from a tradition.
- The published class notes list the 11th house as well, beside the 2nd and 8th. On the recording PVNR names only the 8th and the 2nd.
TP rasi chart (Libra Lagna):
- Ketu, a lord of the 2nd (Scorpio), is in Lagna → spiritual interest that year, and perhaps interest in astrology.
- Venus is Lagna lord and Ketu's dispositor. He sits in the 8th house in own sign (Taurus).
- So Venus dasha has a very good chance of bringing the learning of astrology.
Does the king grant it? From the Moon, the Hora Lord, Venus is in a quadrant. A good placement. Trines come easily; quadrants come with effort. The Moon accepts Venus's agenda, and she will work hard at it in that dasha.
Confirming in D-24 of the TP — and a second rectification:
- The 8th house means many things. To be sure, Venus must be tied to Ketu, Jupiter or the 8th house in D-24, the chart of learning.
- With the time as rectified so far, he is not. So there may still be an error. The D-24 Lagna of this chart changes about every 22 seconds.
- PVNR sets the birth time to 5:30 PM. The Navamsa work above stays valid.
- The TP D-24 Lagna becomes Pisces. Venus is now the 8th lord, in a trine (the 9th, Scorpio), together with Ketu, strong in own sign.
- So during this year she learns occult knowledge.
The facts: until May 13 she knew little astrology. She became interested, and began attending the class sometime in June — before July 22.
