Horoscope Matching — Procedure

The score

• In JHora, open the boy's chart, press the match button and choose "consider a bride for the native". Enter the girl's nakshatra and pada.
• The pada is asked only to fix the Moon sign. What the score needs is nakshatra and sign. Some nakshatras stretch across two rāśis, so the pada settles which. Pūrva Phalgunī lies wholly in Leo, so any pada gives the same result.
• The result is a score out of 36. It is one combined number built from several categories.
• 20 out of 36 is an average match. 11 out of 36 is very poor, and classically not to be considered.

What the score leaves out

The score uses only the Moon. Asked what else people look at besides the score, PVNR answered:

"We use only Moon there. The Moon is the mind. We don't look at Lagna at all. But Lagna also matters. Lagna is your personality, how you conduct yourself. Moon is how you feel, but Lagna is how you conduct yourself."

So after the score he checks, between the two charts:

1. The two Moons — which houses they are in from each other, and whether the lords of the Moon signs are friends.
2. The two Lagnas — the same two checks.
3. The two Venuses — Venus is the kāraka for love.
4. Temperament — the lagna and the lagna lord of each chart, read separately.

When the score is bad and the Lagnas and Moons are also badly placed from each other, there is no need to go through other factors.

Where Navāṁśa comes in

A student asked why the Navāṁśa was not checked. PVNR:

• The girl's Navāṁśa tells how her marriage will be — whoever she marries. It does not tell how she fits this boy.
• If the Rāśi match is excellent, then look at Navāṁśa: will she be happy in marriage, what influences the 4th house, how long the marriage lasts.
• When the Rāśi match is only average, that step can be skipped.

What to look for first

"You should look at progeny also, but the main thing is the temperament should be compatible and the marital life should be smooth. That is the main criterion."

Match 1 — Score 20, an Average Match

Score and mutual placements

• Score: 20 of 36 — average.
• Moons: his in Gemini, hers in Leo — 3rd and 11th from each other. The lords, Mercury and Sun, are okay with each other.
• Lagnas: Aries and Cancer — in mutual quadrants.
• Lagna lords: Mars and Moon are friends.
• Venus: his in Scorpio, hers in Gemini — ṣaḍaṣṭaka (6th and 8th from each other). "That is not that great."

His temperament

• Aries lagna with Rāhu in it. Lagna lord Mars is in the 6th house.
• A malefic owns the lagna and sits in the 6th, and Rāhu is in lagna. Aries is a stubborn lagna to begin with.
• He will be assertive and independent, will not like to obey, and will want to chart his own course.
• The 8th house is very strong (Sun, Mercury, Venus and Saturn in Scorpio): good detachment, interest in spiritual progress.

Her temperament

• Cancer lagna. Lagna lord Moon is in the 2nd house, in Leo, on the Rāhu–Ketu axis (Ketu is with him).
• Yogakāraka Mars and 8th lord Rāhu are together in the 8th house and aspect the lagna lord by graha dṛṣṭi.
• 12th lord Mercury is in the 12th house. She too is a spiritual type.
• Cancer lagna people are sensitive and emotional. But the lagna lord decides how a person approaches life, and hers is in a fiery sign under the aspect of Mars. She is also stubborn.
• "He is dry and stubborn. The girl is more emotional and stubborn."

The Mars–Rāhu concern

• In his chart it is a Mars-owned lagna with Rāhu in it. In hers Mars and Rāhu together aspect the lagna lord.
• Mars with Rāhu is a delicate combination. Touching lagna or lagna lord in both charts, it gives hasty aggression in both — an inability to calculate, just jumping into things.
• Jupiter is in the 10th house in both charts. In his he is debilitated; in hers he is in a friendly sign.
• Both have a natural malefic in the 6th house (his Mars, her Saturn): people who get things done, fighters.

Progeny

The student raised her brother's 5th lord in the 8th house. PVNR added the 5th from Jupiter:

• His chart: 5th lord Sun is in the 8th house. (The student also noted 7th lord Venus in the 8th.)
• Her chart: the 5th house from Jupiter (Leo) holds Ketu, who is 8th lord from Jupiter. Moon and Ketu together there are like an eclipse in the 5th from Jupiter.
• "In one case the 5th lord is in the 8th, in the other case the 5th house contains the 8th lord. That is also an area of concern."

Verdict

"My judgment is this is an average match. It can be considered, but this is not a great match that I will say, okay, go for it."

• Both are inherently spiritual. If what is wanted is a partner for spiritual progress, the match is suitable on that count.
• But one marries for a partner in material life who balances one's strengths and weaknesses. Spiritual interest should not be the main criterion.
• There may be tensions. "You can wait."

Match 2 — Score 11, Skip It

Score and mutual placements

• Score: 11 of 36 — very poor. Classically not to be considered.
• Moons: Gemini and Scorpio — ṣaḍaṣṭaka. The lords, Mercury and Mars, are not friends.
• Lagnas: Aries and Virgo — ṣaḍaṣṭaka again, and the same two lords.
• Venus: Scorpio and Taurus — samasaptaka (7th from each other). This one placement is good.

Score bad, Lagnas bad, Moons bad: no need to weigh other factors.

The girl's chart on its own

The student pointed to strengths in her Rāśi chart: Jupiter's aspect on the 5th house, Venus as 9th lord in the 9th. PVNR agreed the chart has strength and then went to the divisions.

Rāśi (Virgo lagna)

• Exalted Jupiter (in the 11th) aspects the 5th house, and 5th lord Saturn sits there in own sign.
• Venus is in own sign in the 9th. 12th lord Sun is exalted in the 8th.

Navāṁśa (Cancer lagna)

• 7th lord Saturn is debilitated and with Mars.
• Venus is debilitated and afflicted by the Sun.
• Jupiter, exalted in Rāśi, is in a difficult Navāṁśa (Libra). But he is the 9th lord and aspects Mars and Saturn by graha dṛṣṭi. That aspect protects the debilitated 7th lord.
• "Overall Navāṁśa looks pretty good. Marital life will be smooth."

Saptāṁśa (Leo lagna)

• Lagna lord Sun is in the 12th and 12th lord Moon is in lagna — an exchange of the 1st and 12th. Not a good combination.
• Ketu is in the 5th house. He owns the 4th here, but Ketu is not a planet one wants in the 5th of Saptāṁśa.
• 5th lord Jupiter is in the 8th house, though in own sign, so his protection is there.
• 6th lord Saturn is exalted in the 3rd and aspects the 5th house by graha dṛṣṭi. An exalted 6th lord aspecting the 5th is not good for the 5th.
• From Jupiter, the 5th house holds the 6th lord and the 6th house holds the 5th lord — a parivartana of the 5th and 6th.
• "Though the 5th house is strong in Rāśi, Saptāṁśa is not looking very good to me. It is very average." A strong 5th in Rāśi may show something other than children.

Verdict

"This is not a match to pursue just based on a couple of interesting factors. Overall the match is very poor. The temperament may not match that well. It's a better idea to skip this."

The first match is better than this one.

JHora — the Three Aspect Entries in the Highlight Menu

A student asked what "aspected by this rāśi" highlights.

• Rāśis have only rāśi dṛṣṭi. They have no graha dṛṣṭi.
• Click a planet and choose to highlight rāśis, and there are three entries: aspected by this planet (graha dṛṣṭi), aspected by this planet (rāśi dṛṣṭi), aspected by this rāśi (rāśi dṛṣṭi).
• The last two are the same. A planet sits in a rāśi, so its rāśi dṛṣṭi is the rāśi's.
• The first two are offered only when a planet is clicked. Clicking a sign with no planet offers only the last.

Year-End 2012 — No Doomsday

A student asked for a chart of the next day, the end of the Mayan calendar. PVNR: "No, nothing. Don't worry."

Climate

• Man-caused climate change is a fact, though the argument is muddied on both sides.
• Extreme weather is showing up across the world: record drought (almost half the US classed as drought area that year), snow and heat in the wrong places, two large tsunamis within a few years where one is expected in many centuries.
• None of this points to the world ending in one explosive event. It will worsen slowly: wider drought, hunger, people pushed to a corner doing crazy things.
• Big powers may decline as the UK did, new ones may rise, some islands and coastal cities may go under. Seen over thousands of years, worse has happened.
• What one person can do: use natural resources responsibly, cut dependence on what pollutes, and pray for peace.
• From 2001 to 2020 or 2030 is a period of change coming slowly and then becoming drastic.

2012 and the years after

• 2012 has no significance. The Mayan calendar ran in fixed multiples and stopped there. JHora computes planets only up to 5400 AD; that does not mean the world ends in 5400 AD.

"More than now, 2015 is a very, very important year. I expect 2015, '16, '17 — basically from 2015 to 2020 — to be the years of drastic change compared to now."

• He did not go through the charts. Look at the New Year charts.

The school shooting

• A student recalled the Ugādi reading that people's minds would not be happy after Dīpāvalī. PVNR did not claim it: readings like that can be fitted to whatever happens.
• The lunar New Year chart of the US will show links with the event. He left it for a later class.
• His hope: that this event tilts the balance on gun control — an assault weapon ban, perhaps background checks.
