Rasi, D60 & D6 Health Analysis — Student Chart (Leo Lagna)

A student's Leo-lagna chart read live in class. The rasi chart is read planet by planet with the D-60 amsa each planet occupies: Saturn in lagna in Sarpa, Rahu in the 8th in Ghora, the 10th lord Venus in Kshitisha, lagna lord Sun in Deva, 12th lord Moon in Amrita, and a dharma-karmadhipati yoga in the 10th through the Mercury–Venus parivartana. For his health PVNR starts Vimshottari from lagna, finds Rahu dasha running with Rahu in A6, and goes to D-6: Rahu, Ketu and the Sun together in the 11th, the Hara sthana. Saturn and Mercury antardashas involve the badhaka sthana of D-6, Ketu gives no relief, and the D-6 lagna lord Venus, with argala on the afflicting planets, ends the trouble. Body parts are taken from the natural zodiac; the remedy is Aditya Hridayam.

Key principle

If a dasha is bad, it doesn't mean the whole period is bad. There will be some trigger that will start the problem, and there may be a trigger that will remove the problem, and you have to identify them using antardashas.

Example Chart 2 — Student Chart (Leo Lagna)

Student Chart (Leo Lagna)
Jun 13, 1949 · 10:55 AM IST · Tamil Nadu, India
Rasi: Leo lagna with Saturn in it, Ketu in Virgo (2nd), Moon in Sagittarius (5th), Rahu in Pisces (8th, with A6), Sun, Mars and Mercury in Taurus (10th), and Venus in Gemini (11th) exchanging signs with Mercury. Arudha Lagna is Scorpio. Then open D-6: Taurus lagna, with Rahu, Ketu and the Sun together in Pisces in the 11th (Hara sthana), Mercury in Capricorn in the 9th (badhaka sthana, owned by Saturn), and lagna lord Venus in Gemini in the 2nd.

Checking the Chart

PVNR casts it and confirms with the student before reading: Simha lagna with Saturn in it, Moon in Dhanus. He asks for feedback as he goes, to make sure the chart is right.

Mercury in Taurus and Venus in Gemini are in parivartana. Arudha Lagna: Scorpio. A6: Pisces, with Rahu.

Lagna and Arudha Lagna

  • Leo lagna: the Sun is king of the planets. A royal, authoritative disposition; one feels respect on meeting such a person. But lagna is how the person is, not what is seen.
  • Arudha Lagna in Scorpio: a sign of Mars, so the image is of a determined man — but not like Aries. Aries is an agni rasi: determination like fire, argumentative, a fighter. Scorpio is a jala rasi: determination like ice, cool about it.
  • Scorpio is the 8th sign of the natural zodiac — hidden things. The image is of someone holding something back, shrewd. "Even if he is very open and saying everything, you think that there is something else."

Ketu in the 2nd House — Clear Speech

  • One of Ketu's 108 names (Ketu Ashtottara Shatanamavali) is dvitīye sphuṭa-vāg-dātā: in the 2nd, giver of clear speech. The stotra holds several such astrological combinations.
  • Priests known for a fine voice often have Ketu in the 2nd. A clear, bronze-like voice; no "yeah, I think so."
  • It helps that Ketu is in Mercury's sign; Mercury and Jupiter are the karakas of speech. Ketu in an enemy's sign could give speech problems instead.
  • Expression comes from Mercury owning the 2nd; the clarity of voice from Ketu. The class, having heard the student speak, agrees.

Saturn in Lagna — Sarpa Shashtiamsa

  • Sun and Saturn do not get along, so Saturn is in an inimical sign. That is a separate matter.
  • A planet's agenda comes from the houses it owns. Saturn owns the 6th and 7th. The 6th is a bad house, the 7th neutral, so for Leo lagna Saturn is a functional malefic. (For Kumbha lagna he is a functional benefic.) Functional natures will be taught later.
  • A functional malefic in lagna is trouble. Being Saturn it is slow; being the 6th lord it recurs. Always some obstacle or other. Lagna is the head: "Shani is always sitting on the head."
  • This can also be a karma yogi's chart. If Saturn carries punya from the past life, the obstacles are auspicious ones. PVNR points to a local organiser of concerts and homas who is forever creating obstacles and overcoming them, and must have a strong 6th house.
  • Whether the obstacles are enjoyed or suffered is not decided by lordship or placement. It is decided by the shashtiamsa the planet occupies — the karma it carries from the past life.

In the software: Basics tab → Amsa Rulers → choose D-60 in the pop-up menu.

  • Saturn is in Sarpa shashtiamsa. Sarpa is snake; evil. It gives results akin to Sarpa yoga. In lagna: the feeling of being coiled by a snake always. Constant trouble.

Venus — Kshitisha Shashtiamsa and the 10th House

  • Kshiti is the earth; Kshitisha, lord of the earth, is a king. A very benefic amsa: power, authority, responsibility.
  • Venus owns the 3rd and 10th. By the parivartana with Mercury he gives results as though he were in the 10th, so the 10th is in effect owned and occupied by its lord.
  • A strong 10th, with the 10th lord in Kshitisha shashtiamsa: he rises to good heights in career.

The Sun — Paka Lagna in Deva Shashtiamsa

  • Lagna is the head and the circumstances one meets. Rasis are inanimate. His circumstances are those of Saturn and Simha.
  • The lagna lord is the Paka lagna: intelligence and activities — how one acts, behaves, thinks and feels. Those need consciousness, and consciousness comes from grahas.
  • The Sun is in the 10th, "but that's not the important point." He is in Deva shashtiamsa, carrying godly karma.
  • So despite Saturn on the head, the application of intelligence is strong. Maturity: the karaka is Jupiter, the lord to see is the lagna lord. He has the maturity and wisdom to overcome the troubles; his intelligence has the blessings of the gods.

The Moon — 12th Lord in Amrita Shashtiamsa

  • The 12th lord Moon is in the 5th, a trine. The 12th flourishes easily; it has Lakshmi's blessings. The 12th is the house of losses and of giving.
  • The general rule: any house whose lord is in a trine has the blessings of Lakshmi.
  • Amrita is nectar; it does not die. He gives without a break.
  • A 12th lord well placed and in a good shashtiamsa is a yoga for dāna bhāvana — a giver like Karna or Shibi Chakravarti.

Mars — Vamsakshaya Shashtiamsa

  • Mars owns the 4th (mother) and 9th (father).
  • Vamsa is lineage; kshaya is decay. Inauspicious: some misfortune concerning mother, father and elders. Not that everyone passes away — something blocks the growth of the family.

The Yoga in the 10th

  • 9th lord Mars is in the 10th with lagna lord Sun and with Mercury — and "the Mercury there, read him as Venus," because of the parivartana. Venus is the 10th lord.
  • Lagna lord, 9th lord and 10th lord together: Dharma-karmadhipati yoga, a Lakshmi yoga. Mars takes part in it despite his amsa.
  • "The person will be very dharmic. He will do his dharma in society very sincerely." A very powerful chart.

Rahu in the 8th — Ghora Shashtiamsa

  • The 8th is trouble, breaks, tension, anxiety; longevity if good, death if bad (Mrityu sthana). A dusthana, and a bad house for Rahu in particular.
  • Rahu is the planet of the unexpected and of cheating. In the 8th: sudden change through deception; something comes up, the person is deceived, and has to start afresh.
  • By planet in the 8th: Mercury or Venus — more controlled. Mars — sudden; aggression, injuries. Saturn — troubles that give sadness. Rahu — shock.
  • A good shashtiamsa would soften it. Rahu or Ketu in the 8th can even mean a child suddenly leaving his parents for an ashram and becoming a great saint.
  • Here Rahu is in Ghora — the name of a demon; literally terrible, horrible. A terrible karma from the past life, bound to give tensions and setbacks.

Summary of the D-60 Reading

The six amsas were checked against the birth data as read in class; all six hold.

In PVNR's words: a good giver, very intelligent, rises to great height, and always some nagging worry.

Health in the Rasi Chart

The student asks about his current health.

  • Rahu in the 8th is not good for health.
  • But the lagna lord is the Sun, and he is strong. The Sun is the only planet able to fight Rahu. Health will not be terrible: constant health troubles, overcome.

Vimshottari from Lagna

  • Vimshottari can be started from the Moon's nakshatra or from the lagna's. Both are valid.
  • Reactive people have a strong Moon — the mind reacting to the world. Proactive, independent people have a strong lagna — individuality.
  • Here there are more planets in kendras from lagna than from the Moon, so lagna dominates — more so being Simha.
  • From the Moon he would be in Guru dasha, and "things may not make a lot of sense." From lagna they do.
  • In the software: Options → starting point (Janma tara) → Lagna sphuta.
  • The systematic rules come later. A beginner can try both and keep the one that fits.

Rahu Dasha and A6

Rahu dasha began in 1995–96. It is not a good dasha: Rahu is in the 8th.

  • Tension felt inside is seen from houses from lagna. An illness a doctor can find, symptoms that show, is tangible. Manifested disease is not the 6th house; it is A6, the Roga pada or Shatru pada.
  • Rahu is in A6 in the rasi chart.

But arudhas are for antardashas? For Rahu the rule can be put aside.

"Rahu is a totally maya planet. It's a pseudo planet that is derived from Moon; it is more related to mind. He does not want to obey the rules of satya, and he hates Sun. … That's why he is always going opposite the correct direction also."

  • Rahu is materialism and maya; Ketu is breaking away from maya. In his dasha Rahu promotes the arudha he is with — here the Roga pada.
  • Padas can be looked at for any mahadasha; for Rahu it is especially apt.

D-6 — the Chart of Obstacles and Disease

Disease is physical, and the rasi chart is the physical chart, so the rasi chart comes first. D-6 gives detail: obstacles in life, disease, litigation.

In D-6 look at the 6th, the 8th and the 11th.

  • The 11th is the 6th from the 6th: Hara sthana. Hara is a form of Shiva — not the auspicious Dakshinamurti or Ishwara, but the form that hands out troubles and physical problems.
  • Rahu in the 11th of any other chart gives gains. In D-6, gains are gains of disease. This holds only in D-6.

The student's D-6 (lagna Taurus):

  • Rahu, Ketu and the Sun are together in Pisces, the 11th — Hara sthana.
  • The Sun is karaka of physical vitality; the Moon of mental vitality.
  • Sun or Moon eclipsed by the nodes in D-6 is bad for health: the Moon for the mind, the Sun for the body.
  • So Rahu dasha is not good for health.

Body Parts — the Natural Zodiac

Which part of the body? Use the Naisargika chakra, the natural Kala chakra counted from Aries — not the natal lagna. A student guesses "Sun, the head"; PVNR: only partly true.

House / SignPart
1 / AriesHead, brain
2 / TaurusFace
3 / GeminiNeck; respiratory system, lungs
4 / Cancer / MoonHeart
5 / Leo / SunStomach and upper abdomen — the digestive system
6 / VirgoLower abdomen — the other part of the digestive system
7 / Libra / VenusKidneys; the reproductive parts inside the body (uterus)
8 / ScorpioExternal reproductive organs, anus
9–12Thighs, knees, legs, feet
  • The Sun is afflicted, so the trouble is in the digestive system — the stomach, "not a brain tumor or something." That would need Mars or the 1st sign to be the weak point.
  • The student says at this point that he has diabetes and bronchitis. PVNR goes on with the list; the bronchitis is not tied to a placement in class.

The Remedy

  • Propitiate the Sun: he is the vitality karaka and the one being afflicted.
  • Read Aditya Hridayam every day, or at least on Sundays. Surya Gayatri also.
  • The Sun grows stronger and can fight Rahu and Ketu. "Right now he is not able to fight. That is why there is disease."

Badhaka Sthana

Kind of trouble
6th houseObstacles you can see
8th houseSudden problems from bad past karma
Badhaka sthanaTroubles with no reason. Undiagnosable
LagnaSignsBadhaka sthana
Movable (chara)Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn11th
Fixed (sthira)Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius9th
Dual (dvisvabhava)Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces7th
  • Badhaka troubles can come from spirits and ghosts, or from tantra — black magic — done against the person. It may have been done in a past life and its result postponed until now.
  • Their sources cannot be explained or diagnosed scientifically. No cure comes while badhaka is involved. Prayer is the only way.

The Antardashas of Rahu Dasha

Read in D-6, whose lagna is Taurus, a fixed sign: the badhaka sthana is the 9th, Capricorn.

AntardashaD-6 placementJudgment
Saturn (from about 2001)Lord of the badhaka sthanaThe start of the problems
Mercury (running at the time of the class; to about 2006)In the 9th, the badhaka sthanaProblems that cannot be diagnosed or cured
KetuWith Rahu, afflicting the SunNo relief
Venus (about 2007–08, ± 1 year)Lagna lord, in the 2nd. Argala on lagna, and on Rahu–Ketu–Sun from the 4th from themPuts an end to the problems
  • The dates are loose. Lagna goes round the zodiac in a day, the Moon in a month, so lagna-based Vimshottari dates move 30 times faster with an error in birth time. One minute can shift them by a year or more. 2001 could be 2000 or 2002. They are firm only after rectification.
  • What to tell him honestly. If a person wants only solace, one can say "do this and everything will go away." The honest answer: pray to Surya, which eases it to some extent; a full cure is not expected before the end of Ketu antardasha.
  • Why Venus cures. The lagna lord always shows curing. A lagna lord's intervention on the trouble-causing planets removes the trouble.

"When Venus gets control over a small part of that life, he will say, 'Hey Rahu, why are you doing this? Stop this.' … He is the lagna lord. That is the agenda of Venus."

  • A student's point: Venus aspects Pisces all the time, not only in his period. PVNR agrees — Venus in Gemini has rasi drishti on Pisces, so health never dips below a certain level. But rasi drishti gives its results always; argala gives its results in periods. The argala shows in Venus antardasha.

A6 in D-6

Rahu afflicting the Sun hurts vitality. Whether that becomes a disease with a name is seen only from A6.

  • A6 in D-6 falls in Aquarius, owned by Rahu and Saturn. Rahu is with more planets; Saturn is alone. Rahu is the stronger lord.
  • Rahu in Pisces is in the 2nd from A6: argala.
  • A house lord with argala on his house makes it flourish — here, disease.
  • So Rahu is in A6 in the rasi chart, and in D-6 owns A6 and has argala on it.

The lesson PVNR draws:

"If a dasha is bad, it doesn't mean the whole period is bad. There will be some trigger that will start the problem, and there may be a trigger that will remove the problem, and you have to identify them using antardashas."

Key Principles Introduced in Lesson 10

PrincipleRule
MahadashaKaraka Sun. Houses and lordship from lagna
AntardashaKaraka Moon. Arudha padas
Arudha in an antardashaA planet occupying an arudha, or with argala on it, gives that arudha's results in its antardasha
Rahu dashaThe exception: Rahu is a maya planet, so read arudhas even at mahadasha level
Malefics in 3, 6, 11Very auspicious. Saturn in the 3rd still gives laziness in starting
A6Tangible opposition and tangible disease (Roga pada, Shatru pada)
Houses from an arudhaShow the fortunes of that trophy or puja, not the person. Arudha Lagna is the exception
Debilitation in D-20The strongest placement: stri prakriti, submission to the deity
Shashtiamsa (D-60)The amsa a planet occupies is the karma it carries from the past life
Paka lagnaThe lagna lord: intelligence, activities, maturity
Lagna VimshottariUse it when lagna dominates the Moon — more planets in kendras from lagna
Badhaka sthanaMovable 11th, fixed 9th, dual 7th. Undiagnosable troubles; prayer is the remedy
D-66th, 8th and 11th. The 11th is Hara sthana — gains of disease
Sun or Moon with the nodes in D-6Bad for health: Sun the body, Moon the mind
Body partsNatural zodiac from Aries, not the natal lagna
Remedy for healthPropitiate the afflicted karaka — the Sun for physical vitality — so that he can fight Rahu and Ketu
House lord in a trineThat house has Lakshmi's blessings
JupiterKaraka of mantras
Lagna lord's argala on the afflicting planetsStops the trouble, in the lagna lord's antardasha
