BPHS Ch.33 v32-38: Malefic in 3rd from Karkamsa=Brave, Benefic=Timid; 4th=Property Attitude (Moon/Venus=Palatial, Saturn=Modest, Mars+Ketu=High-Tech, Jupiter=Natural, Sun=Simple); 5th: Mars+Rahu=TB/Dangerous Disease, Ketu=Grahani, Rahu/Gulika=Poison/Black Magic; Mercury in 5th = PARAMAHAMSA (Childlike Purity+No Enemies+Total Adaptability)

3rd from Karkamsa: functional malefic = bold, brave, takes risks (Shura + Pratapavan); functional benefic = timid, cautious, holds back (Kaatara). "The 3rd house = initiative and fighting spirit; malefics jump in headlong; benefics protect the self from risk." Not natural but functional nature — varies by divisional chart (D10=bold in career, D20=bold in spiritual). 4th from Karkamsa = attitude toward property (D4): "Not just material house — what property means to one's sense of I." Moon/Venus or exalted planet = palatial, person attached and proud; Saturn/Rahu = modest ordinary dwelling; Mars+Ketu = Aishtikam (burned/engineered material = high-tech, synthetic, modern construction); Jupiter = Daru (wood = natural, simple, green; doesn't care about luxury); Sun = grass/thatch, very simple, aligned with nature; Moon alternative = open space, happy anywhere. 5th from Karkamsa (D30) = 12th from 6th = "loss of ability to fight disease." Mars+Rahu = TB/dangerous viral/bacterial/infectious disease; weak Moon aspecting = "certain suffering, prana too weak to fight"; Mars alone = large boils, heat diseases; Ketu = Grahani (dysentery), water-borne diseases; Rahu/Gulika = danger from black magic or poisons ("modern: prescription drugs with terrible side effects, plastics, pesticides, asbestos, radioactive exposure = all count as poison"). Mercury in 5th from Karkamsa = Paramahamsa and Laguri (ascetic with staff). Why Mercury = Paramahamsa: "Hamsa = swan = can separate milk from water; Paramahamsa = whoever they touch becomes gold." Two Mercury qualities: (1) childlike purity ("power comes from simplicity not intellectual authority"); (2) no enemies ("all other planets have enemies; Mercury has none — with Saturn he behaves like Saturn; with Jupiter like Jupiter; total flexibility"). "To change someone you can't stand on a pedestal. You become like them, then slowly they identify with you. That is the Paramahamsa way." Different saint types: Mercury = Paramahamsa; Venus/Ketu = Siddha; Jupiter = regular saint/teacher.

"All other planets have enemies. Even Jupiter — his own Guru, Venus, is his enemy. But Mercury has no enemies. He adapts completely to whoever he is with. When he is with Saturn, he behaves like Saturn. With Jupiter, like Jupiter. This is why Mercury in the 5th from Karkamsa gives a Paramahamsa — a saint who can become whatever the disciple needs. He doesn't stand on a pedestal saying "do this." He becomes like the disciple, and slowly the disciple becomes like him. That is how transformation happens."

Verse 32: 3rd from Karkamsa — Brave or Timid

Sanskrit gist: "Swamsha tritiye pape jatah shura pratapaван" — "In the 3rd house from Karakamsa, a functional malefic → the native is bold and brave."

Verse content:

  • Functional malefic in 3rd from Karkamsa: Person is shura (brave) and pratapavan (determined, daring) — will jump into things, take risks, engage in bold acts
  • Functional benefic in 3rd from Karkamsa: Person is kaatara (timid, cautious) — will hold back, assess risks, think before acting

Why?: The 3rd house represents the initiative and fighting spirit, the drive to get things done.

  • Functional malefics from Lagna (6th lord, 8th lord, etc.) = planets who show fighting, risk-taking, jumping into things headlong
  • Functional benefics = planets who want the body/self to be safe and comfortable; they protect against risk

Which divisional chart?: Parashara does not specify. PVNR: "This applies in whichever amsha is relevant to the area of life being discussed. If D10 (career), he is bold in professional matters. If D20 (spiritual), he is bold in spiritual practices. D4 (property/fortune) = bold in accumulating assets."

PVNR personal example: In D20 (spiritual progress), AK Moon is in Cancer; 3rd from Cancer = Virgo. Virgo contains debilitated Venus, debilitated Sun, and Mars. Functionally: Venus = Lagna lord (benefic), Sun = 4th lord (neutral), Mars = 7th+12th lord (neutral-benefic). No strong functional malefic. Result: PVNR is cautious in spiritual matters — "Why do I need to do that particular risky sadhana? Let me just do Satyanarayana Puja or regular homa." Once decided, he can sit for 15 hours meditating, but deciding what to do = cautious.

Verses on 4th from Karkamsa — Type of House and Attitude

Key insight (PVNR): "When you look at the 4th house from Karkamsa, you are talking about the attitude of the person toward property, not just the actual property. Karkamsa is the sense of 'this is I.' The 4th from it shows how one's property is part of one's definition of self."

Planet influencing 4th from KarkamsaType of HouseDeeper Meaning
Moon or Venus (conjoin/aspect) OR exalted planetPalatial/luxurious housePerson is attached to and proud of the house; it is a key part of their identity
Saturn or RahuModest/ordinary house (stone, mud, hut)Very average, nothing special; person's property aspirations are simple/minimal
Mars + KetuBrick/burnt-material houseHigh-tech, engineered, synthetic materials; cutting-edge construction
JupiterWood/natural houseSimple, green, nature-friendly; uncomplicated abode
SunGrass/thatch houseVery simple, green, environment-friendly; natural living
Moon (alternative)Open space / no permanent houseHappy wherever he is; doesn't need a specific house to be content

Details on each:

Mars + Ketu: "Aishtikam" = "that which has been created by burning." Mars = fire, Ketu = fire/engineering. Together = materials derived through engineering processes. In modern context: synthetic materials, special glass, high-tech building materials, modern architectural techniques.

Jupiter: "Daru" = wood. But meaning is deeper: natural, uncomplicated, close to nature. Green technology. The rishis' ashrams were made with leaves and wood — simple living. Even if a Jupiter person has a big house, in his mind he doesn't care: "Being in 3,000 sq ft or a small room makes no difference." He lives in nature in his mind.

Sun: "Grass house" (pandasala). Same principle as Jupiter — very simple, green, life-affirming. Sun is the giver of life → living in alignment with life's natural flow.

Moon → open space: Parashara gives two Moon results: (1) luxurious house (Moon = happiness → wealthy house), and (2) living in open space with wife, still happy. "The point is not that he lives in the open. The point is even in the open, he will be happy. Moon is the planet of contentment."

"Someone can be living in a $2 million house and still be complaining about the swimming pool temperature. On the other hand, someone with a strong happiness combination can be happy with whatever he has."

— PVNR

Divisional chart: D4 (Chaturthamsa) — chart for property, real estate, fortune, where one resides.

Verses on 5th from Karkamsa — Diseases and Spiritual Gifts

Why 5th from Karkamsa for diseases?

  • 6th house = fighting/disease (strength to fight)
  • 5th = 12th from 6th = loss of fighting ability; the person cannot fight the disease
  • 5th also = Poorva Punya (past life karma/blessings) — can show both suffering (bad past karma) and blessings (good past karma)

Divisional chart: D30 (Trimshamsa) — chart of serious suffering, evil events, punishments.

Mars + Rahu in 5th from Karkamsa → TB / Dangerous Disease

Condition: Mars AND Rahu in 5th from Karkamsa (D30).

Result: Shairogam = tuberculosis (lung disease with severe symptoms). More broadly: dangerous foreign bodies — bacteria, viruses, parasites entering the body.

Why Mars+Rahu = foreign bodies: "Rahu shows depletion and foreign bodies. Mars+Rahu together = a dangerous combination of foreign things attacking the body. In modern context: TB, AIDS, dangerous viral infections, parasites."

Moon aspecting (weak Moon): If a weak Moon is aspecting this combination → "certain" that the disease will manifest fully.

  • Weak Moon = weak prana (life force), weak fighting spirit of the mind
  • "The person gives up the fight at the soul level. The mind is also going with that. He won't fight strongly."

PVNR example: Ramakrishna Paramahansa had throat cancer and let it consume him without fighting it. But his "surrender" to disease actually created the conditions for the Ramakrishna Mission — his disciples gathered around him during his illness, did intensive sadhana, built camaraderie. "In the case of fully realized saints, whatever happens is a play."

If Mars alone (no Rahu): Not foreign bodies. Instead: large boils, heat diseases (Mars = fire/heat; without Rahu's foreign-body quality, the disease is more Mars-type).

Ketu (in 5th from Karkamsa): "Grahani" (dysentery/loose motion with blood) and "jala-related diseases." PVNR interprets: not edema (that's Moon/Venus), but water-borne diseases — cholera, amoeba from impure water, bacterial/viral infections from water. Also: Ketu-connected diseases from Scorpio/Mars co-ownership of Scorpio (watery-poisonous).

Rahu or Gulika (in 5th from Karkamsa): Fear from black magic or poison. PVNR extends this widely:

"When you say poison, don't just think of cyanide or snake poison. Things that are not good for your body that you ended up taking are also poison. Modern anti-depression medicines with terrible side effects. Plastic and thermocol particles from microwaved containers. Pesticides inhaled by workers. Asbestos. Radioactive exposure. Toxic chemicals in factory work. These all qualify as 'poison' in the chart."

— PVNR

Mercury in 5th from Karkamsa → Paramahamsa Saint

Condition: Mercury associated with 5th from Karkamsa.

Result: "Paramahamsa" and "laguri" (ascetic carrying a staff).

What is a Paramahamsa?: "Hamsa = swan (mystical being that can separate milk from water). Paramahamsa = one who can take any person, see their good and bad qualities, remove the bad, and make them a person of pure milk. Whoever they touch becomes gold. Ramakrishna was called Paramahamsa by others (not by himself)."

Why Mercury (and not just any benefic)?

Two key qualities Mercury has that distinguish a Paramahamsa from an ordinary saint:

  1. Childlike purity: Mercury = childlike (pure, simple). A Paramahamsa's power comes from childlike purity and simplicity, not intellectual authority.

  2. Adaptability without enemies:

"All other planets have enemies. Even Jupiter's own Guru (Venus) is his enemy. But Mercury doesn't really see anybody as an enemy. When he is with Saturn, he behaves like Saturn. When he is with Jupiter, he behaves like Jupiter. He is flexible. He can discuss with whomever he is with."

"To change somebody, you can't stand on a high pedestal and say 'Son, do this.' You have to be with that person, and slowly the person identifies with you. Ramakrishna scolded one hard-headed disciple ('What a coward you are!') and gently rebuked a gentle disciple ('Is that what you think of your Guru?'). The message was different for each. Mercury shows someone who adapts their approach based on who they are with."

— PVNR

Classes of spiritual beings:

  • Siddha: Venus, Ketu (powers of spirit)
  • Regular saint: Jupiter, Venus, benefics
  • Paramahamsa: Mercury specifically
  • Each has their own way of being good and affecting the world.
