BPHS Ch.29 Verse 16 — 12th House from Arudha Lagna (General Rule)

Recap of verses up to 15

• Planets occupying, aspecting or having argala on the 11th from Arudha Lagna give gains.
• A planet aspecting the 11th from the pada but not the 12th gives gains without obstruction.
• This aspect is graha dṛṣṭi, not rāśi dṛṣṭi. The paramparā taught it as sign aspect, but rāśi dṛṣṭi never falls on two consecutive signs, so "aspecting the 11th but not the 12th" would mean nothing. With graha dṛṣṭi the condition has content.
• It is better still when the aspecting planet is a functional benefic, the lord of the sign, or a planet placed in the lagna or the 9th house.
• When aspects and conjunctions on the 11th are many in number, there are profits. So in a rich, self-made person's chart the 11th from AL should carry many more influences than the 12th. The second half of the class tests this.
• A student asked in which planet's daśā the gains come. Postponed: no daśā has yet been taught where one picks the planet and says "this one gives the gains".

Śubha / pāpa are functional, saumya / krūra are natural

Verse 16 speaks of a śubha or pāpa planet joining or aspecting the 12th from the pada.

• Śubha = functional benefic. Pāpa = functional malefic.
• Saumya = natural benefic. Krūra = natural malefic.

"Natural benefic is saumya, natural malefic is krūra, and functional benefic is śubha, functional malefic is pāpa. Parāśara is very clear in the distinction, even though people mix them up."

• Reading śubha graha / pāpa graha here as Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Mars is "definitely wrong".
• Functional with respect to what? Parāśara does not say whether it is reckoned from the lagna or from the Arudha pada being examined. The teacher's take: from the Arudha pada. He marks this as his own reading, not Parāśara's statement.

The result

• A planet in the 12th from AL → many expenses, and also earning in many special ways (viśeṣopārjana). To spend a lot one must be getting a lot.
• Why both: a planet in the 12th has dhana argala on the 11th. It makes the money come, and being in the 12th it makes it go.
• Functional benefic → through a good path (sumārga). Functional malefic → through a bad path (kumārga). Parāśara does not say legal or illegal; only bad, undesirable.
• Mixed or neutral planets, or one benefic with one malefic → mixed results, neither good path nor bad path.

Does "good path / bad path" describe the earning or the spending?

• The verse is not explicit. The teacher applies it to the earning: one earns through a path, while spending is on something, and the line just before spoke of earning.
• A student objected: spending too can be good or bad — on gambling or on charity. The teacher agreed that it makes sense, but the grammar does not suggest it.

"I am not 100% sure, but the grammar is 80% suggestive that he is applying it to the lābha, not to the vyaya."

The same for the 11th

• Parāśara then says the same is to be said of the 11th: functional benefics there give money through a good path, functional malefics through a bad path.
• The difference: in the 11th the money simply comes. In the 12th it comes (argala on the 11th) and it also goes.

Specific Planets in 12th from AL (Verses 16-23)

Notes on each

Venus / Sun / Rahu — rājamūla

• It can be money given to the king, or money spent on a kingly thing.
• Since taxes come separately under Jupiter, the teacher reads this more as luxuries, living like a king. The Sun is the planet of royalty; Venus and Rahu are the planets of luxuries.
• A student's reading, accepted as possible: the king is visiting your village, so you paint your house to look good before him.

Mercury — jñāti

• The word in the verse is saumya. Here it is a name of Mercury (son of Soma), not "a natural benefic" — the passage is listing planets one by one.
• Jñāti are close relatives who are also rivals: in the old days a king's sons by several wives, and the father's cousins' sons, all competed for the kingdom. A student's gloss, accepted: "relatives with legal rights".
• It need not be rivals only. Mercury signifies relatives in general, so this is spending on helping relatives — cousins, second cousins and so on.

Jupiter — taxes

• Parāśara does not say benefic or malefic for the aspecting planet; any planet.
• Why the aspect is required: Jupiter is the kāraka of dhana, of accumulating. He is the kāraka for giving knowledge, not for giving away money. Even in the 12th from AL he may not make the person spend unless another planet provokes him; then he spends according to that planet's agenda.

Saturn with Mars — brothers

• Mars is the significator of brothers. Mars alone there could show money spent on brothers.

"I am not sure why he mentioned Saturn also there. Saturn does not seem to make any sense there."

The same combinations in the 11th from AL

• Whatever yogas were given for the 12th from the Arudha become yogas of gain when they occur in the 11th.
• The quality the planet shows becomes the reason for gaining instead of the reason for spending: money from the king, or on account of luxury goods; with Mars, money through brothers.

Rahu or Ketu in 7th from AL → Digestive Problems

The verse: if the 7th from the Arudha has Rahu or Ketu (śikhī), the native has kukṣi vyathā — stomach pain, digestive trouble — and is troubled by fire in the stomach.

• Parāśara says Rahu athavā Ketu: either one. Not both.

The teacher's question to the class: why digestion? The 7th house is not the stomach; it is the kidneys.

The reasoning:

1. Rahu and Ketu are planets of depletion, natural malefics of the highest order. They are enemies of the Sun, the kāraka of good health; they eclipse him. That they give health trouble is understood. The question is why from the 7th from AL.
2. Arudha Lagna is the body. What a person physically is, is tangible, so the body is shown more by Arudha Lagna than by the lagna. The houses from AL are the body parts.
3. In the 7th from AL, Rahu and Ketu aspect the Arudha Lagna → some damage to the body. Which part depends on the houses they occupy, aspect, own and have argala on, counted from AL.
4. Digestion is the 5th from AL. Take the 5th as lagna: the nodes are in the 3rd from it. Other planets give argala from the 11th; for Rahu and Ketu the count is reversed, so from the 3rd they have argala on the 5th from AL.
5. The kāraka of digestion is the Sun — the digestive fire. The nodes hate him.

"They are having argala, they have a conclusive role in a particular house, and the kāraka of that house they hate."

Why not the 8th from AL?

• By the same reversed count the nodes in the 7th also have argala on the 8th (genitals and anus).
• The kāraka there is Saturn, who is friendly to Rahu and Ketu. So trouble there is possible but weaker. If they must damage the body, they pick the house whose kāraka they hate.

This is a generic result. Modifiers:

• The lord of the 5th from AL matters as well as the kāraka; a generic verse cannot account for him, because he can be any planet.
• If the Sun is strong, or the 5th lord is strong or a friend of the nodes, or a strong Jupiter sits in the 5th, the nodes may not be able to spoil the digestion. Occupants, aspectors, lord, kāraka and argala all play a role.
• Even then some trouble can show in the daśā or antardaśā of Rahu or Ketu, but not pronounced.

Body Parts from Arudha Lagna

The teacher ran through the houses to show the 7th is not the stomach:

The 6th was not named.

"Bodily problems can be seen from houses from Arudha Lagna. That is the message here. Arudha Lagna is the body. Various houses are various body parts."

Which chart?

• A student asked whether all this is in D-1.
• Parāśara never says "what follows is in rāśi" or "in such-and-such aṁśa". One has to pick the right chart.
• He assigns the rāśi chart to physical matters, and digestion is physical. So rāśi is the main chart for this verse.
• The teacher also mentions a divisional chart at this point, but the recording is too garbled to tell what he says about it. For the examples below he uses the rāśi chart.
