India's Independence Chart — Mundane Analysis
India's 1947 chart read dasha by dasha at three levels: the Rashi chart for what physically happens, the D60 for the karma underneath, and the Navamsa for relations with other countries. The 1998 nuclear test shows the rule that a mahadasha is read from houses and an antardasha from Arudhas — Venus as lagna lord in the 3rd, then Rahu's argala on A3. Also covered: Saturn as Yogakaraka in Komala amsa, Mercury in Davagni, Ketu burning the 2nd of D60, the Vipreet Raj Yoga of Venus and Saturn in the Navamsa, and the 6th lord Sun in the Navamsa lagna.
Key principle
India as a country existed for thousands of years, but when India got independence from the British, a new existence started. So it is like a new birth for that nation.

Why a Country Has a Chart
The independence time was a muhurta given by astrologers, and India became independent exactly then.
"India as a country existed for thousands of years. The boundaries kept changing. But when India got independence from the British, a new existence started. So it is like a new birth for that nation."
At that moment everyone living there started thinking of India as an independent country. Something in the collective consciousness marks that time as the birth of the entity. For the US there are many versions of the birth time and he gets good results with none of them, so he leaves it.
The Chart
Rashi (Taurus lagna):
- Rahu in lagna; Ketu in the 7th (Scorpio).
- Mars in the 2nd (Gemini). Jupiter in the 6th (Libra).
- Five planets in the 3rd (Cancer): Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Saturn. Venus is the lagna lord. Moon is the 3rd lord in his own sign.
- A3 is in Aries, the 12th house. Arudha Lagna is in Virgo.
Navamsa (Pisces lagna): Sun in lagna; Jupiter in the 3rd (Taurus); Moon and Ketu in the 6th (Leo); Mercury in the 9th; Mars in the 10th (Sagittarius); Venus and Saturn together in the 11th (Capricorn); Rahu in the 12th.
Shashtiamsa (Leo lagna): Mars in lagna; Ketu in the 2nd (Virgo); Mercury in the 3rd; Saturn in the 4th (Scorpio); Jupiter in the 6th; Venus in the 9th (Aries).
Nuclear Test, May 1998 — Venus Mahadasha, Rahu Antardasha
A3 shows weapons. A3 is in Aries. Rahu is in Taurus, the 2nd from Aries, so Rahu has argala on A3.
How the three kinds of influence differ:
- Rasi drishti is always there, irrespective of dashas.
- Graha drishti is a desire. It may or may not manifest. Whether it does depends on the planet's relations with the house lord (the group manager) and the karaka (the project manager).
- Argala is a conclusive intervention. It must happen. Every house receives argala from the 2nd, 4th and 11th from it (primary) and from the 5th (secondary). Like graha drishti, it delivers in that planet's dasha.
- The same analogy for a house: the karaka is the project manager, the house lord is the group leader, the planets in the house are the team members.
So Rahu's argala on A3 has to deliver in one of Rahu's antardashas.
"All weapons that can kill will be shown by Mars, but a big explosion is shown by Rahu and Ketu. Rahu and Ketu are the planets of sudden shocking things. Mars is the planet of determination, and Rahu is the planet of shock. So Rahu is the planet who can show nuclear weapons."
Mahadasha Level vs Antardasha Level
"The level of mahadasha is ruled by Sun. The level of antardasha is ruled by Moon. Sun shows Shiva, and Moon shows Devi, Shakti. So at the level of Shiva or Satya or Sun, only truth matters — houses and house lordships are more important. But at the level of Moon, mind is swayed by illusion. So at the level of antardashas, Arudhas are far more important."
Applied to the test:
- Venus mahadasha — read houses. Venus is the lagna lord in the 3rd house of bravery, with the 3rd lord. Lagna lord = new beginnings and self-assertion. A period in which India bravely makes a new beginning and declares its bravery. Venus also has argala on A3 (Cancer is the 4th from Aries), but he calls that a tertiary reason and sets it aside.
- Rahu antardasha — read Arudhas. Rahu has argala on A3. The weapon manifests.
Saturn Mahadasha (1947–1965)
Rashi chart — the physical level:
- Saturn owns the 9th and 10th from Taurus. A planet owning a trine and a quadrant is a Yogakaraka. He is in the 3rd.
- A dasha of prosperity, fortune and good karma — but given by Saturn, so through hard work. India had been in slavery for a thousand years and began in 1947; in this dasha came the Green Revolution, dams everywhere, industrialization.
- Saturn's Shashtiamsa is Komala, delicate. Good Bhagya and good Karma, but delicately poised: touch it a little and it breaks.
D60 chart — the karma (Leo lagna):
- Saturn owns the 6th and 7th: a functional malefic, and an enemy of the lagna lord.
- He is in the 4th. Good houses for Saturn are 3, 6, 11. In the Sukha sthana he gives sukha-lopa — lack of comfort.
- Of his two houses he influences the 6th (Capricorn) more: he has graha drishti on it (3rd aspect from Scorpio), rasi drishti on it, and argala on it (Scorpio is the 11th from Capricorn).
- 6th = obstacles, enemies, war. 1947–1965 is a period of enmity, war and instability.
Physically: a revolution and prosperity. At the supraconscious level, the level of karma: turmoil and enmity. Both are true.
Mercury Mahadasha (1965–1982)
- Mercury owns the 2nd and 5th from Taurus — a functional benefic. By the standard dictum a good dasha, and it is.
- But his Shashtiamsa is Davagni, forest fire. Students call it destructive. He corrects them: the forest fire exists for a purpose.
"It basically destroys the bad wood so that there is a new beginning. Destroying rotten things and creating a new beginning — but a lot of pain and suffering in that process."
- Mercury is the 5th lord: children, the next generation. In this dasha India took up population control — family planning, then forced vasectomies, which made Sanjay Gandhi very unpopular; the Emergency; Indira Gandhi's fall.
- Right things were done to stop the rot, and they created great turmoil.
Ketu Mahadasha (1982–1989)
Rashi chart:
- Ketu owns Scorpio, the 7th, and sits in it — own house. Well placed by ownership. But the 7th is the house of Kama, and Ketu is the planet of Moksha, who wants to give up material things.
"He is the karaka for Moksha, but he is the lord of that house. By lordship, his agenda is to create desire. But by inherent nature, he wants to lose desire. So this is a period of confusion for India."
- India is confused between material growth and detachment from it. A critical time.
- 7th also = relationships with others, and Rahu and Ketu signify foreign things. Rajiv Gandhi opened Indian policy; the country became more open to foreign participation.
D60 chart:
- Ketu is in the 2nd, the house of resources. Good houses for Ketu are 3, 6 and 11. In any other house he burns the house.
"Ketu is also called Dhumra Ketu, the smoking Ketu. That means he converts that house to smoke, evaporates that house."
- A crisis of resources and money — not complete dissolution, but that is the direction. Indira Gandhi died, Rajiv Gandhi came, there was a financial crunch. It was more controlled than the crisis of 1991.
- Ketu in the 2nd also shows unconventional things about money: India opening up in finance.
Venus Mahadasha (1989–2009)
Rashi chart: Venus is the lagna lord in the 3rd — at the physical level a new, bold beginning.
Shashtiamsa name — Kala: time personified. Time has no emotion; it runs uniformly. Saturn is the significator of Kala. Detached, disciplined karma.
"India will make a new beginning without any emotion. A new beginning, basically cold — a very cold-hearted new beginning that the country will make."
D60 chart: Venus owns the 3rd and the 10th from Leo and is in the 9th.
- 10th lord in the Dharma sthana — like a Dharma-Karmadhipati Yoga. India follows its Dharma sincerely and does its karma in the world. A very auspicious time by D60.
- Venus owns the 3rd in D60 as well. The initiative is there physically and also in the karma. Because the two charts agree, this is definitely a period of new initiative.
Navamsa — international relations: see the next section.
Navamsa of a Country — International Relations
Navamsa at its base is Dharma; marriage is part of Dharma. A country does not marry, but how it deals with other countries is part of its Dharma. Read India's international relations from the Navamsa.
Venus mahadasha:
- From Pisces lagna Venus owns the 3rd and 8th — a functional malefic. Trouble and worry in international relations. The 8th is instability and change: changes of foreign policy.
- Venus is with Saturn, who owns the 11th and 12th. The 8th lord and the 12th lord together: Vipreet Raj Yoga.
"If the 3rd, 6th, 8th and 12th lords — a couple of those or more — are together in one house, that is a Vipreet Raj Yoga. Viprita means reversal. It gives great results after reversal. So first there is some struggle and then reversal."
- Start of Venus dasha: India was aligned with Russia, Russia fell, the foreign policy was in confusion and was rethought.
- The yoga is between Venus and Saturn, so Venus–Saturn antardasha delivers it. It began in 2002. The thaw with Pakistan, the US and the European countries began when Venus dasha began; the peak came in 2002–2003, when India rose in international stature.
- A student notes A7 is in the same sign. 7th = relations in general; A7 = a specific relationship starting. A specific new relationship can start in the periods of Venus and Saturn.
Sun mahadasha (from 2009) — asked by a student when Kashmir will be resolved; he declines the specific prediction and reads the next dasha instead.
- Rashi chart: Sun in the 3rd, in Cancer, a friend's house. For a papagraha — Sun, Mars, Saturn, Rahu, Ketu — the 3rd is very good; better than Venus in the 3rd. It makes India bold. Sun is in the 11th from Arudha Lagna: to the world India looks like it is gaining.
- Shashtiamsa name — Yaksha: demigods, very skilled, capable of magic. India rises to that stature and gets a reputation for skill bordering on magic.
"India will really shine. So the 'India Shining' slogan that the BJP government used in the last election will be more applicable in the Sun dasha that is yet to come."
- D60 chart: Sun is the lagna lord, the most auspicious planet of any chart. He aspects the lagna and has mutual aspect with Mars, the 4th and 9th lord, who is in lagna — a great Raj Yoga. He expects a great dasha overall. (In the class software the Sun is in the 7th of the D60, opposite Mars. The Sun stands within 1′ of a Shashtiamsa boundary, so a chart cast with a slightly different ayanamsa can show him one sign later.)
- Navamsa: Sun is the 6th lord sitting in lagna.
"Lagna is basically head. So the enemy is coming and sitting on you. That means an unavoidable enmity, unavoidable war."
- Venus dasha saw changes and tension; there is a good chance Sun dasha sees a war — though it will finally be a good dasha.
- The reverse placement means the reverse thing: lagna lord in the 6th is you sitting on the enemy's head — warmongering. 6th lord in lagna is being troubled by an enemy. It is not India being its own enemy.
India's image in the Navamsa:
- Lagna lord Jupiter is in the 3rd. India's initiative towards other countries is slow and peaceful, and even if enemies come India can overcome.
- Arudha Lagna of the Navamsa is Cancer; the 3rd from it is Virgo. No planet is in it. By rasi drishti — a permanent influence — Sun in Pisces and Mars in Sagittarius aspect Virgo.
"Sun and Mars, aggressive planets, aspecting the 3rd. So India is seen as an aggressive country. That may not really be India, but that is how India is seen."
