The Four Planes of Existence

The class handout lists the 16 charts as D-N. The number N tells the plane of existence the chart throws light on:

D1–D12: The Physical Plane

• Not every number has a chart. There is no D5 or D6 in Parashara.
• D5, D6, D8 and D11 are given by other scholars such as Jaimini and Nilakantha. Some people use them. The class keeps to Parashara.
• Everything in these charts exists physically: the body, the wealth you command, siblings, parents, children, the activities you perform.

D13–D24: The Plane of Consciousness

Why is a vehicle here? It is physical. A student asked. D16 shows the comfort you feel because of the vehicle — the mental sukha and asukha, the feeling of fulfilment or of suffering.

Why "consciousness" and not "mind":

"Consciousness is different from mind. Mental is one aspect of consciousness. The other aspect is intellectual."

Manas, buddhi, chitta are all in this layer. These charts can still result in physical acts — spiritual evolution may have you reciting a mantra — but their focus is something in your consciousness.

D16 — Kalamsa: The Moon has 16 phases (ṣoḍaśa kalā): 0, 1/15, 2/15 … 15/15, Amavasya to Purnima. D16 shows the 16 phases of the mind — totally depressed, somewhat happy, more happy, totally elated.

Which planets? A student asked which planet to look at in each chart. Look at all planets in all charts. The Moon is the mind and remains relevant even for the subconscious charts.

D24 key quadrant: In D24 the 4th house is the most important quadrant, because the 4th shows learning. In D10 it is the 10th.

D25–D36: The Subconscious Plane

When you are happy, doing a puja, or learning something, you are conscious of it. Other forces work within you without your knowing.

"One may be prone to anger and may not know why. When he sees a particular color, or a particular kind of words, or a particular activity, one may subconsciously become angry."

Subconscious factors are not only negative. There are positive ones too.

D27 — seed of 3: 27 is equivalent to 3 once multiples of 12 are removed. The chart is based on a seed of 3 — the subconscious initiative behind one's activity.

D30 — the Pāpapuruṣa: Just as there is a deity within you — Jupiter as your intelligence, the Moon as your mind, Vamana as your humility, Bali as the proud giver in you — there is a Pāpapuruṣa within you. He exists as the ṣaḍ-ripus, the six enemies, which are his six faces:

D30 shows which faces of the Pāpapuruṣa are strong in you and when they show themselves — a period when you are very angry is one face showing up — and the punishment that comes of it.

D37+: The Supraconscious (Karmic) Plane

"Your soul is completely aware of that plane of existence, and only your soul exists in that plane. But that plane of existence has a great impact on you."

Only great maharshis, yogis and sadhakas are aware of it. It carries the imprint of what you did in the past life.

D40 and D45 — ancestral karma:

• "Maternal" means the mother of this life and her ancestors — her mother, her father, his father and so on. D45 is the same on the father's side.
• Their good and bad karma reaches you as blessings or curses. It may not be visible in any other chart.
• Go only up to 7 generations on either side.
• Example: In one family, whenever the men married there was suffering — the marriage broke at once or was extremely unhappy. The native's chart showed a curse from a few generations back: after an unfortunate event, a lady's curse lay on the family, to run for seven generations.
• The daśās show when a particular blessing or curse gives its result.
• For ordinary people these two charts can safely be left alone — unless one of them shows a severe curse or a great blessing, or the person says unfortunate things have been happening in the family for two or three generations.

Dasavargas vs Shodasavargas

After defining the Shodasavargas, Parashara defined the Dasavargas — ten important charts taken out of the sixteen.

Why D40 and D45 matter for rulers: A king's karma is huge. It affects the lives of thousands. A king or president may wage an unfair war in which thousands die, and the results of that karma have to be borne by those born after him in that line. In royal horoscopy these two charts are as important as any other.

D60 — The Shashtiamsa: Chart of Past Life

Parashara on D60: For Dasamsa he gave career, for Siddhamsa learning, for Vimsamsa upasana. For Shashtiamsa he gave no specific matter. He said ṣaṣṭyaṁśe akhilam — in Shashtiamsa, everything.

What PVNR learned from his gurus: Traditions that use this chart keep it secret. It shows the past life — what the person did then, and so what karma is to be experienced now.

"All the other divisional charts, including the Rasi chart, only show the medium through which you experience that karma. Shashtiamsa alone is the chart that shows what karma you have to experience."

The body, the knowledge, the career, the car, the spouse are the medium. Whether the karma itself is auspicious or inauspicious is from D60.

Vimsopaka Bala: Parashara gives each divisional chart a number. D60 gets the highest. Rasi and Navamsa come second, equal to each other. So D60 is even more important than Rasi and Navamsa.

Do not hurry into this chart.

• The D60 lagna changes every 2 minutes on average. With it the Arudha Lagna and everything else changes.
• If the time is 6 minutes off, the lagna is three signs away. The reading is then not merely inaccurate — it is random.
• First fix the birth time from the other charts and the events of life: when the person went to college, finished education, went abroad, married, when the first and second children were born. Only then use D60.

3rd from Arudha Lagna in D60 — Past-Life Death and Current Phobias

How can anyone be sure of a past life? What a person did then cannot be verified. Some things can.

"Certain things you can't verify, but certain things you can verify."

Rule (Jaimini): The 3rd house from Arudha Lagna shows how a person dies — the nature and environment of the death: comfortable and natural, cruel, or sudden. (Arudha Lagna is defined in a coming class.)

• In D60 it shows how the person died in the past life — and that leaves phobias in this life.
• In the Rasi chart it shows how the end comes in this life. Death is taught later.

The four cases:

1. A gentleman, himself a great astrologer — exalted Moon. Asked whether he had hydrophobia, he said he did, and was slowly working on it.
2. Ketu. Such people are very, very careful. They fear a loose staircase or railing. If something heavy hangs above them they are afraid, for no reason they can give, that it will fall on them. Having died by a mistake, they are extremely sensitive to the chance of a mistake taking their life.
3. Ketu in Sagittarius. PVNR first fixed the birth time from life events, and Ketu in Sagittarius stayed in that house. The man confirmed it: whenever he is at a height holding a staircase railing, there is an inexplicable fear that something may go wrong.
4. A lady — Venus in Sagittarius. PVNR asked: are you afraid of heights, especially in a vehicle? Yes. She drives, but on a raised bridge over water the thought comes: what if this falls?

Mula Dasha and D60 — Timing Past-Life Karma

Reading a planet in D60: Jupiter in the 10th house of D60 — he was an astrologer, or did dharmic work in society, in the past life. That knowledge will come to him easily in this life.

Mula Dasha shows the mūla, the root, of what happens to you in this life. It is a very important daśā.

Example: A Westerner, an American born in Massachusetts.

• In D60 he had Jupiter in the 4th house — along with Ketu, as PVNR recalls it. That is learning Jupiterian knowledge: traditional astrology, the Vedas, sacred knowledge. He learned it in the past life.
• When Jupiter's Mula Dasha came, he suddenly took to Hinduism and astrology, and became a very good astrologer within that daśā. The knowledge came naturally.

The rule works both ways:

"Dharmo rakṣati rakṣitaḥ. If you save dharma in the past life, it will save you."

Whatever good you did, you get its fruit. If you were cruel to your spouse in the past life and made the spouse unhappy, there will be suffering in marriage in this life.

Mula Dasha read with D60 catches what Vimshottari Dasha misses.

D9 Navamsa — Chart of Dharma and Marriage

After D60 and Rasi, the third important chart is the Navamsa. In Vimsopaka Bala it stands equal with Rasi, second to D60.

• Dharma — the 9th house is dharma, and Navamsa is the chart of dharma
• Marriage and spouse — because marriage is not just about kama; it is about dharma
• Internal abilities — because abilities are what define your dharma. A rickshaw driver and the head of a mutt have different dharmas. God judges their actions by different yardsticks.

"Navamsa is basically the yardstick that is applied to your karma. That is your dharma."

Why Only These Charts? Why These Formulas?

Is there a D17 or D18? A student asked. A chart can be made by dividing by any number. Parashara did not speak of the others because they do not show something very important.

Why is D10 counted from the sign itself and from the 9th? PVNR does not claim to know the full reasoning. Siddhamsa (D24) is counted from Leo or Cancer; one explanation he has heard ties the two to Ganesha and Saraswati, to parā vidyā and aparā vidyā. "I know only the tip of the iceberg."

"Anything given in scriptures by sages of the stature of Parashara and Jaimini is not arbitrary."

The lunar calendars, the meanings of the houses from the four trikonas, the weekday order from the horas — each had a basis. So have these.

There are also charts of 150 and 300 divisions (Nāḍyaṁśa and Ardha-nāḍyaṁśa), used in some parts of India. The class keeps to the sixteen.

The Four Pillars of Vedic Astrology — Now Complete

Every divisional chart looks the same — 12 Rasis, nine planets and the lagna — and the principles of Jyotish are the same in each. The meaning of a house shifts with the varga. The 5th house is abilities:

• in the chart of learning — scholarship
• in the chart of spiritual evolution — reciting mantras and the like
• in the chart of career — your following

Why teach them first:

• To read well from the Rasi chart alone you need vāk bala — you must be a sadhaka with good intuition
• With divisional charts you are using Shastra, a basis given by Parashara, and only partly intuition. Go straight to the right chart and things become clear.

"Don't think that divisional charts are advanced concepts."

"Not just me — Parashara defined divisional charts even before he defined houses in his classic Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra."

The four pillars are now laid:

1. Rasis (signs)
2. Grahas (planets)
3. Bhavas (houses)
4. Varga Chakras (divisional charts)

Argalas and aspects are also known. The next class takes up examples of judging a particular house in a particular varga.
