Parashara's Functional Benefic Rules & Nakshatra Remedies with Transits
Trikona (1,5,9) lords: always functional benefics for any lagna. Kendra (4,7,10) lords: natural benefics owning kendras become inauspicious (the most evil); natural malefics owning kendras = neutral. Upachaya/dusthana (3,6,11) lords: bad for any planet. Neutral (2,8,12) lords: neutral. When a planet owns two houses: trine+trine = excellent benefic; trine+bad = neutral; two bad = very bad. Lagna lordship always dominates. Mercury special rule: takes the color of surrounding planets — with malefics becomes malefic; with benefics becomes benefic. Using nakshatra mantras with transits: bad planet transiting Karma Nakshatra = propitiate that nakshatra's deity to withstand pressure; good planet transiting = propitiate to maximize benefit. Pranapada Lagna homework: read BPHS to find its specific focus (PP = symbol of life force).
"Mercury is the greatest saint with saints, and with the mafia he says I know the best strategy. He is the most malleable planet — he takes on whatever surrounds him."
— P.V.R. Narasimha Rao
Nakshatra Sutras Continued
| Nakshatra | Deity | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Punarvasu | Aditi (mother of all gods) | "Mother from whom all good qualities are born" |
| Pushyami (Pushya) | Brihaspati (Jupiter deity) | Distinct from generic Jupiter mantras |
Why Specific Nakshatra Mantra vs. Generic Planet Mantra?
- Generic Jupiter mantra = propitiate Jupiter for general Jupiter-related blessings (e.g., 5H results for children)
- Nakshatra mantra for Pushyami = propitiate Jupiter as the ruler of the specific station of pranavayu that is Pushyami
- Use nakshatra mantra when that nakshatra specifically needs strengthening or protection
How to Use Nakshatra Mantras with Transits
Strengthening against bad transit:
- If a bad planet (Saturn, Rahu) is transiting your Karma Nakshatra → disturbances, tests in career
- "Nakshatra is shaking because of the presence of Saturn or Rahu"
- Propitiate the nakshatra deity → makes the nakshatra withstand the pressure
Maximizing good transit:
- If a good planet (Jupiter) is transiting a key nakshatra → propitiate it to "take maximum advantage"
- "You can minimize the bad impact of a bad planet or maximize the good impact of a good planet"
Example: Saturn currently transiting Pushyami → if Pushyami is someone's Karma Nakshatra (born in Uttarabhadra), they may have career disturbances → propitiate Brihaspati (Pushyami's deity) through the nakshatra sutra
Parashara's Functional Benefic/Malefic Rules — Complete Framework
Critically important: This lesson has the most complete version of this teaching.
Trikona (Trine) Houses: 1, 5, 9
- Lords of 1, 5, 9 are always benefic — for any planet, owning a trine house makes them functionally beneficial
- These are called benefic houses
Kendra (Quadrant) Houses: 4, 7, 10
- Natural benefics (Jupiter, Venus, Mercury, waxing Moon) owning kendra houses become inauspicious/evil
- "Benefic planet in kendra lordship = negative for functional purposes"
- Natural malefics (Mars, Saturn, Sun) owning kendra houses = neutral (not benefic, not malefic)
Upachaya / Dusthana Houses: 3, 6, 11
- Lords of 3, 6, 11 are bad for anyone — "bad houses for any planet"
- Owning any of these makes a planet functionally malefic
Neutral Houses: 2, 8, 12
- Lords of 2, 8, 12 are neutral houses
- PVNR's clarification: "Some people say beneficial, but that is a failed interpretation. Parashara's definition is: for malefics, neutral houses; for benefics, bad houses."
- Exception: 2H and 12H are sometimes considered negative but Parashara says neutral
Combining Two House Lordships
| First House | Second House | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Trine (good) + Trine (good) | → Very good (excellent functional benefic) | |
| Trine (good) + Kendra (neutral for malefic) | → Good overall | |
| Trine (good) + Kendra (evil for benefic) | → Mixed; trine dominates | |
| Trine (good) + 3/6/11 (bad) | → Neutral overall (cancel out) | |
| Kendra (neutral/evil) + 3/6/11 (bad) | → Bad | |
| 3/6/11 + 3/6/11 | → Very bad |
Special case — Lagna lordship:
- Lagna (1H) is the most important trine and takes dominance
- "Lagna lord is the one who gives you fee to your existence. He will not compromise your existence."
- Example: Venus for Taurus Lagna = 1L (trine) + 6L (bad). Despite 6L, Venus is overall benefic because Lagna dominates.
- Venus will give some 6H results (fighting) but overall remains beneficial
Example: Mercury for Scorpio Lagna (Israel 2005 chart)
- Mercury = 8L + 11L
- 8H = neutral (not terrible functionally), but 11H = malefic house
- Result: Mercury = functional malefic for Scorpio lagna
- Additionally: inherent nature — Mercury is with Rahu, Sun, near-new Moon = natural malefic here
- "Mercury with malefics becomes malefic; with benefics becomes benefic. He is the greatest saint with saints; with mafia he says 'I know the best strategy to kill that person.'"
Mercury's Special Inherent Nature Rule
- Mercury's inherent (natural) benefic/malefic status depends on company:
- With benefic planets = benefic
- With malefic planets = malefic
- "Distance matters if equal numbers; but if more malefics, he takes that side regardless of distance"
- "3 malefics and 1 benefic in a room — Mercury will be speaking the malefic language"
Parashara's Lagna-Specific Lists
- After giving the general rules, Parashara gave specific lists for every lagna:
- E.g., "For Mesha Lagna: these planets are benefic, these are malefic, these are terrible malefic, this is yogakaraka"
- These specific lists quantify the general rules and resolve ambiguities
- Reference: Use these specific lists (given in any standard Parashara translation)
Mundane Chart Principles (Consolidated)
Before diving into examples, PVNR consolidates mundane chart doctrine:
| House | Mundane Meaning |
|---|---|
| 10th house | Governance/administration the country receives; ruling party |
| 3rd house | Opposition party (6th from 10th = enemy of 10H) |
| 10th lord | Intelligence driving the administration |
| A10 / L10 (Graha Arudha of 10L) | Tangible, visible leader (like Ariel Sharon specifically) |
| 6th house | War, hostility, litigation |
| A6 | Tangible war events (not just potential) |
| Mars | Karaka for war |
| 5th house | Overall mood of the country, emotions of the people |
| Saptar Sahama | Sahama to look at for issues related to armed forces, missiles |
How to check for tangible war possibility:
- Is A6 linked to 6th house and Mars?
- Is Mars (karaka) aspecting the 6th house or A6?
- Is there an overlap between A6, 6L, and Mars?
- Check Satru Sahama also for confirmations
Analyzing ruling party vs. opposition:
- Take 10H as lagna → analyze how dashas and planets fare from Aries/10H perspective → ruling party's fortune
- Take 3H as lagna → analyze from that perspective → opposition's fortune
- Compare the two to see which will be more fortunate during elections
Special dasha applicability check for mundane charts:
- Same rules as natal: check if 1L in 7H, 7L in 1H, lagna in Vargottama, Sun in lagna, 10L in 10H
- Dual lordship (Scorpio): "Can take either lord. If one of them is in 7H, the dasha applies."
- If Vargottama lagna → consider Shatabhika Dasha (100-year compressed)
