Divisional Charts Are Main Charts

• Most people pay lip service to divisional charts: the rāśi chart shows things, the divisional chart is for confirmation and cannot override it.

"If rāśi chart is showing 90% of the thing and divisional chart is just for refinement — the remaining 5% or 10% — then it is as well not present."

• Twins have the same rāśi chart and many differences, so divisional charts must be crucial. Parāśara assigns each one its purpose at the start.
• "Once you find the divisional chart, it is your rāśi chart, it is your key." Do with it every analysis done with a rāśi chart.
• This is a step beyond superimposing vargas on the rāśi chart. Take the professional life, the academic life, the spiritual life of the person as the subject, and ask what the fortunes, the evils and the karma are in that.

Divisional Vimśottarī

• A student asks whether to find the Vimśottarī of each divisional chart or only of the rāśi chart.

"When I want to see career, I am seeing the Moon in the daśāṁśa and starting the Vimśottarī daśā from him. Whichever chart I am judging, I am finding the divisional Vimśottarī daśā there."

Vimśottarī in a Tājaka Annual Chart

• Traditional Tājaka practice takes the natal Moon's nakṣatra and moves the starting daśā forward by one nakṣatra each year.
• The teacher drops that. Treat the annual chart as a chart by itself. Go to the divisional chart of interest within it, see where the Moon is there, and start from that.
• In his software both "use daśā seed from the natal chart" boxes must be unchecked to get his dates.

Functional Nature of Rāhu and Ketu

"For nodes, the rule is: houses owned by them are not important. Houses they occupy are more important. Who they are with are more important."

• They have no sense of "this is mine". Like an outcast roaming the world with no town or house of his own: wherever he is, he takes care of that.
• See the sign too: a benefic sign or a malefic sign.
• Rāhu and Ketu being together in a divisional chart means nothing. "In some charts they are always together, in some charts they are always opposite."

The 8th Lord

• Parāśara does not call the 8th lord benefic, malefic or neutral. He says: look at the other house owned by the planet, and the planets he is with.
• The Sun or Moon as 8th lord owns no other house, so only the company counts.
• The friendliness of the sign is not part of functional nature.
• Jupiter for Cancer lagna (6th and 9th lord) is a benefic, but a weak one.

Krūra and Saumya Are Not Malefic and Benefic

A student says the Sun is by default a malefic. The teacher: a planet's inherent nature is irrelevant in judging its functional nature.

• Krūra grahas, when they do good, do it in a fierce way.
• "Fierce planets can do good to you and gentle planets can do bad to you."
• The gentle one: you are on life support, and he says politely that time is up and takes the oxygen mask off.
• The fierce one: "Take this, you have to take it, otherwise I will hit you" — and he gives you a million dollars.
• Functional nature is decided by the houses owned, because the houses you own are your agenda.

3rd Lord in the 6th, 6th Lord in the 3rd

• According to Parāśara, when the lord of one of the 3rd, 6th and 11th is in another of them, it is a good placement — especially 6th lord in the 3rd and 3rd lord in the 6th.

"The one whose job is to give you initiative is in the house of fighting. You will have initiative and you will fight."

Open Questions with Sūrya Siddhānta

• "We are at the beginning of redefining things on the basis of Sūrya Siddhānta." Take one factor at a time, find the correlation, isolate it, then move to the next. Accept what you do not know.
• Ārūḍhas: he has no settled view yet on how to calculate or use them.
• Conditional nakṣatra daśās: not in use yet. When a daśā applies because the lagna is vargottama, is it counted from the lagna or from the Moon? Such questions never had satisfactory answers.
• Daśās of divisional charts were "total noise" when he tried them long ago. "Now there is a lot of correlation, especially when I see transits."
• Raise the bar: do not settle for the bigger of two small signals.
• Sūrya Siddhānta is not named so because it favours the Sun over the Moon. The Sun rules the whole solar system. There is no Chandra Siddhānta.
• Sahamas are not from Parāśara; later authors such as Nīlakaṇṭha give them. He stays first with what Parāśara taught — nakṣatra daśās with Vimśottarī as their king, conditional daśās, rāśi daśās, Sudarśana Chakra daśā, transits, Aṣṭakavarga — and experiments with the rest after.
• The software has no menu for functional benefics and malefics; he has not coded those rules.

"Some things that we know have to be unlearned and some things have to be relearned. But whenever you are in doubt, go to Parāśara."
