The Example Chart

The recording opens after the native's Rasi and Dasamsa have already been read. What the class knows about him:

• Male, born 1976. Engineer (B.E., about 1993–97), working in the United States on a work visa; green card application filed and in process.
• Feels he is not recognised at work. Wants either an MBA or his own consulting business.
• Puts a lot of money in stocks, in India as well, and has gained. One stock bought at ₹34 stood at ₹800.
• Has a deformity in one leg from birth.
• First child, a son, born 28 April 2006, five weeks before the class.

Rasi placements used in this class

• Taurus lagna. Jupiter, the 8th and 11th lord, is in lagna.
• Venus, lord of lagna and of the 6th, is in Scorpio in the 7th.
• Sun (debilitated), Mars, Mercury and Rahu are in Libra in the 6th. Rahu is co-lord of the 10th (Aquarius).
• Saturn, the yogakaraka (9th and 10th lord), is in Cancer in the 3rd.
• Moon and Ketu are in Aries in the 12th.

Birth time

• Earlier in the class the time had been moved back a little from the Dasamsa. In this recording the Siddhamsa (D24) lagna is tested between Virgo and Leo, Leo is accepted, and the time is set "backward just enough so that it is on the border".
• The nakshatra dasha used for this chart is Dwisaptati Sama Dasha (lagna lord in the 7th), not Vimshottari. "Saturn dasha" and "Venus dasha" below are periods of that dasha.

Tithi Pravesha (Annual Chart) — When to Go Independent

What the natal chart had already shown

• From the natal dashas: after August 2006, for about 14 months, the time is very favourable for starting his own business — consulting.
• Natal Dasamsa: Capricorn lagna with Moon and Rahu in it. Moon is the 7th lord in lagna and wants to give a new beginning, an independent venture. Rahu may spoil it.
• The green card is in process. The teacher's view: even without it there is a stage after which he can work on his own. "You can advise him to think of doing something on his own … anytime after this August."

The annual charts are used to narrow this down.

Year from 17 October 2005 — hora lord Saturn

Dasamsa of the year (Leo lagna):

• Saturn, ruler of the year, is in lagna as 6th and 7th lord. The 7th lord in lagna can give enterprise and desire. Apart from that he shows hard work in the old job, not a new one.
• Sun, the lagna lord, is debilitated in the 3rd. The 3rd is serious initiative, but "lagna lord, if he is pissed off, he is the one who is supposed to take care of your career. He won't take initiative in doing things." Exalted in the 3rd would have been another matter.
• He is in the 11th from Arudha Lagna and in A5, so the year is not bad.
• No change of job in this year.

Year from 5 November 2006 — hora lord Venus

Dasamsa of the year (Aquarius lagna):

• Venus is the 4th lord in the 4th: excellent for sukha. Venus is the yogakaraka, and the yogakaraka rules the year.
• The 5th house of recognition is extremely strong: 5th lord Mercury is in the 5th.
• A5 has Mars in it and has argala from the exalted Sun, karaka of recognition, and from Mercury.
• Sun is the 7th lord exalted in the 3rd: parakrama — desire, and the initiative to fulfil it. This is the planet for going on his own as a contractor or consultant.
• Lagna lord Saturn is in the 7th.

Rasi of the year (Virgo lagna):

• Venus is the 2nd lord in the 2nd house of money, with Mercury, the lagna and 10th lord. Venus is also the 9th lord: a Raja Yoga of 9th and 10th lords.
• Mars and Sun are in the same sign and spoil the yoga, but they are further off: Mars 15°, Sun 19°, Venus 22°, Mercury 26°. Venus and Mercury are close.

Periods inside the year:

• Sun's period — October–November 2006, around Diwali, roughly the first half of November: the time to go independent. Another service job is possible, but something independent suits him for the next couple of years.
• Mercury's period — February–March 2007: he will be very well recognised for it and happy with himself. Mercury is the key planet: 5th lord in the 5th in Dasamsa, lagna and 10th lord in Rasi, in Raja Yoga with the ruler of the year.
• The remaining months of the current year do not look favourable.

"Even in natal chart, when we saw the dashas, we thought after August things will be very good. And here again the same thing is showing up."

• Independent work looks more likely than the MBA: the Dasamsa is this good, and the D24 showed the Sun–Saturn combination afflicting Mercury.
• "At least for the next 3 years, being an independent consultant is better for him than working for a company where he does not get recognised."

Prayer at the start of the year

• The year begins on 5 November 2006 at about 6:15 PM Eastern Standard Time (daylight saving is over by then), where he lives.
• Venus and Mercury form the Raja Yoga and are well placed in Dasamsa too. That combination is Lakshmi–Narayana.
• Pray to Lakshmi and Narayana at that time. Start half an hour before and go on for half an hour after; be in puja at the moment itself.

Remedy for the natal Dasamsa

• Moon and Rahu are together in the natal D10 lagna. Moon wants the new beginning; Rahu must be kept in check so that both can coexist and do their jobs.
• Pray to Durga. Durga Saptashati may be too big; do at least Durga Saptashloki, the seven shlokas.
• Every day, or every Saturday, or every Monday — Monday for Moon, Saturday for Capricorn — or both.
• "Slowly initiative will be formed within him."

D7 (Saptamsa) — The First Child

Natal Saptamsa

Scorpio lagna, an even sign, so the count runs backward.

• First child: the 5th counted backward is Cancer. Its lord is Moon.
• Boy or girl: do not judge from the lord himself. See the planets he is with, and the sign he is in. With Venus it would be a girl; with Mars a boy. If he is alone, see the sign. Moon is alone in Libra, an odd sign: a boy. A child with strong lunar or Libran influence, sensitive.
• Second child: the next sign is ruled by Venus, and Ketu lies on the way. Venus and Jupiter are together in Scorpio in lagna and both aspect that sign; either guru can carry the count over Ketu. Scorpio shows a girl, Jupiter shows a boy. "If there is a planet, usually you don't look at the sign, you look at the planet." Jupiter dominates: a second boy is likely.

The dasha does not explain it. The birth fell in Saturn–Sun of the nakshatra dasha.

• Saturn and Sun have nothing to do with Libra.
• General rule: the 9th house controls childbirth in a female chart, the 5th house in a male chart.
• The 5th here is Pisces. Mercury and Sun are in it. Saturn has rasi drishti, graha drishti and argala on it. But Saturn is the 4th lord.
• "There is some chance, but it doesn't make full sense. I mean, we couldn't have predicted."
• Homework: try Vimshottari and the Narayana Dasha of D7 and come back with a coherent logic.

The annual chart of 2005 explains it

Year from 17 October 2005, ruler Saturn. The child was born on 28 April 2006, in Jupiter's period of that year.

Rasi of the year (Virgo lagna):

• Putra Saham is at 11°36′ Aries. Its lord Mars is in Aries.
• Jupiter, the natural putrakaraka, is at 4° Libra and aspects Putra Saham and its lord.
• Saturn, the 5th lord, is at 16° Cancer. He aspects the 5th house and, by his 10th aspect, Putra Saham.
• So Putra Saham, the 5th house and Jupiter are linked. The key planets are Saturn and Jupiter.

Saptamsa of the year (Taurus lagna):

• Jupiter is the 8th and 11th lord, a functional malefic, but he is the putrakaraka, in the 7th, aspecting lagna and Moon. Moon and Jupiter on the lagna axis give Gajakesari Yoga.
• The 3rd house is the 11th from the 5th: the gain of a child, the fulfilment of the 5th house. Its lord Moon is exalted in lagna. "Any planet exalted in lagna gives happiness relating to that particular thing."
• A5 (the tangible child) and A11 (the tangible gain) are both in the 3rd house, Cancer. Their lord is that same Moon, and Jupiter aspects Cancer as well.
• Moon is also the chara putrakaraka of the year.

Which planet would he have picked

Three strong candidates:

1. Moon — exalted in the Saptamsa lagna, 3rd lord, lord of A5 and A11, chara putrakaraka; in the Rasi he is in the sign of Putra Saham and is the dispositor of the 5th lord.
2. Saturn — 5th lord in the Rasi aspecting the 5th house; in the Saptamsa, lord of Capricorn, the sign of the first child (Taurus lagna is even, so the count is backward).
3. Jupiter — the natural putrakaraka.

"My first choice would have been Moon. My second choice would have been Saturn and my third choice would have been Jupiter. It happens to be Jupiter here."

Natal Chart vs. Tithi Pravesha

A student's difficulty: the natal chart points to one planet as the key, the annual chart to a different one. Which one controls?

For prediction

• The natal chart is always the controlling chart.
• If you predict with Vimshottari, use the natal chart. If you predict with the dasha of the Tithi Pravesha chart, the planets of that chart are the ones that matter.
• Both ways of speaking are valid and do not clash: "you are running Saturn–Moon, both tied to the 5th house in the natal Dasamsa, so you will have recognition", or "this month's lord is the 5th lord in the annual Dasamsa, so this is a good month for recognition".
• Different planets may give the same result in the two charts. "You just have to get over that discomfort."

"Vimshottari dasha, antardasha will give you a couple of years of window. If you want to narrow down, you can use the Tithi Pravesha. And when you are narrowing down, obviously it will be different planets that help you narrow down."

When the two charts repeat each other

• If the same planet shows the same thing in the natal chart and in the year's chart, you can be very confident.
• If not the same planet, look for a similar combination: 10th lord in the 5th in the natal chart, and 5th lord in the 5th or 10th lord in the 5th in the year's chart — recognition can be predicted for that year.
• Key events often come this way. One native had Sarpa Yoga in the natal chart; in one year the Tithi Pravesha chart had Sarpa Yoga too, and one of its planets ruled the year. He had a big fall that year.
• "Don't expect the same planet to play similar role. Look for any planet playing a similar role."

This chart: in the natal Dasamsa the 7th lord Moon is in lagna. In the Dasamsa of the year from November 2006, the lagna lord Saturn is in the 7th and the 7th lord Sun is strong. The 7th house and the lagna–7th link stand out in both, through different planets. The year before showed nothing of the kind. So the move comes after November 2006, not before.

For prayer

"If you are wondering who to propitiate, my answer to that is natal is always more important."

• Running Mercury's period in the annual chart is not a reason to pray to Mercury. Pray on the basis of the natal chart.
• The one exception: at the moment the new year begins, pray to the key planets of the Tithi Pravesha chart.

Argala — How One House Intervenes on Another

A student observes that in the Dasamsa of the coming year the Sun, in the 3rd house, has argala on the 12th house: when his period comes the native may also give something up. The teacher agrees.

• The 12th house is the house of compromise and commitment.
• Sun in the 3rd is in the 4th from the 12th: a 4th-house argala, the one that gives direction. He directs what commitment and what compromise the native makes in his career.
• This is general: the 3rd house always has argala on the 12th. Every initiative carries a commitment or a compromise, and the initiative sits in the driver's seat and decides which.

A study he recommends: take each house and see which houses have argala on it and which it has argala on. Example, the 3rd house as travel:

• The 4th is the 2nd from the 3rd. The 4th is vehicles. The vehicle is the resource for travel — a resource argala.
• The 7th: the partner, the people travelling with you, have a controlling argala on your travel.

"Every house has argala from various houses, and every house has argala on various houses, and that is based on certain fundamental meanings of those houses."
