PVNR's Chart — Aries Narayana Dasha Three-Parts (1995–2007) & Additional Rules

Full Example — PVNR's Chart, Aries Dasha (April 1995 – April 2007)

Setting Up the Three Parts

• Aries is Prishtodaya → the sign takes the last third
• Its lord Mars is in Aries itself, again a Prishtodaya sign → he takes the last part still available, the second
• The first third goes to the associations

The dasha is 12 years with 12 one-year antardashas. Each third = 4 years.

Associations Slot: 7 Planets (Apr 1995 – Apr 1999)

• Occupying Aries: Mercury, Venus, Saturn, Mars
• Aspecting Aries by rasi drishti: Moon and Rahu (Aquarius), Ketu (Leo)
• Not counted: the Sun (Pisces does not aspect Aries) and Jupiter (he aspects Aries by graha drishti, not by sign aspect). Mandi and Gulika are left out.

48 months ÷ 7 ≈ 7 months each (a little less; the last portion is rounded to the end of the third).

Order by advancement in sign:

1. Moon — 28°33' Aquarius — Atmakaraka
2. Mars — 26°40' Aries — Amatyakaraka
   • (Bhratrukaraka is the Sun; he is not one of the seven, so skip him)
3. Saturn — 15°06' Aries — Matrukaraka
4. Rahu — 16°53' Aquarius, so advancement 30° − 16°53' = 13°07' — Pitrukaraka. This is why Saturn beats him.
5. Ketu — same longitude as Rahu. One view from elders: Rahu always first, Ketu next. Another: compare their strength. "You can experiment... Rahu and Ketu are very alike anyway."
6. Venus — 7°54' Aries — Gnatikaraka
7. Mercury — 3° Aries — Darakaraka

Each planet's portion gives the result of its association with Aries — what it brings to the dasha sign.

Moon (Apr 1995 – Nov 1995)

• Moon owns the 11th, occupies the 6th, aspects Aries (the 8th)
• He brings 11th house results to Aries through the 6th house → gains through overcoming obstacles, through service and work. The 6th is the job for someone not in business.
• What happened: after his Master's he had worked in India for a year and tried Korea for 10 months. In this period he came back to the USA. He was not happy with the place he came to, used that job as a stepping stone, and had another offer within 3 months. He stayed in the first job only 6 months.
• A student asks whether the arudha padas can be read here too. PVNR: yes, but he is keeping it simple.

Mars (Nov 1995 – Jun 1996)

• Mars in the 8th is bad in general. But Aries benefits from having its own lord in it. As an association of Aries, Mars is a very good influence.
• It is still the 8th house → changes, but good changes.
• What happened: the visa for the new job was approved and he finally switched jobs. A student guesses a child from A5 (which is in Aries). PVNR: "Good guess. I had a child in that period."

Saturn (Jun 1996 – Jan 1997)

• Saturn is debilitated in Aries. A student points to neechabhanga. PVNR: it is there, but Aries does not care whether Saturn is debilitated or not — a sign does not like having Saturn in it. Saturn does not uplift Aries.
• What counts is that the 5th lord and 6th lord is in Aries:
  • 5th lord in the 8th, the house of occult learning → a lot of learning and scholarship
  • A student adds anxiety over children's health, 5th lord being in the 8th. PVNR agrees.
  • 6th lord in the 8th → accidents. A student calls it Viparita Raja Yoga. PVNR: fine — "one car is broken and you buy a nice new car" — but yogas are not being read here, and 6th lord in the 8th or 8th lord in the 6th can give accidents.
• Saturn being who he is, in the 8th, health is not so good. Overall a bad period.
• What happened: a vehicular accident. "All the Saturn-type results came."

Rahu (Jan 1997 – Aug 1997)

• Like the Moon, but Rahu is not 11th lord. He is 6th lord in the 6th, in his own sign Aquarius, aspecting the 8th. The Moon is uncomfortable in Aquarius; Rahu is comfortable there.
• A strong 6th lord in the 6th → obstacles to overcome, and they are overcome; success over enemies.

"It is not smooth sailing, but it will be successful sailing."

• What happened: nothing special. He was working hard and working well.

Do not count houses from the dasha sign here. A student notes Rahu is in the 11th from Aries, so there should be gain in the end. PVNR rejects it:

"We don't really look at houses from Aries because Aries is not lagna. It is just the Narayana Dasha sign. In the Aries dasha, the progressed lagna is actually Libra. Aries is the progressed 7th house, not lagna."

Ketu (Aug 1997 – Mar 1998)

• Ketu is 3rd lord in the 12th house (Leo), aspecting Aries by rasi drishti.
• 3rd = communication, short travel, initiative, boldness.
• Ketu, the moksha karaka, in the house of moksha → spirituality, religiousness, pujas increase.
• Ketu is the significator of parampara and of Vedic knowledge. Aries is the 8th house — occult knowledge. So: a parampara relationship coming in connection with occult knowledge.
• What happened:
  • Around September 1997 he joined the Jyotish List on the internet and posted heavily every day. This was his first public discussion of astrology.
  • There he met his guru, Pt. Sanjay Rath, who was using arudha padas, chara karakas and Narayana Dasha — things PVNR had never heard. "First I thought he was some kind of weird guy, but later I became interested."
  • Around February 1998, feeling mistreated in an argument, he left the list and the writing slowed down — as Ketu's portion ended.

Venus (Mar 1998 – Oct 1998)

• Venus is 2nd and 9th lord in Aries.
• For Venus himself Aries is bad — "he hates Aries"; he would love Pisces and would settle for Libra or Taurus. That matters when judging Venus's own placement.
• For Aries it is good. Aries is glad Mercury and Venus came, and sad Saturn came:

"If two nice guys come to your house, you are happy about it. The nice guy may look at your house and think, 'Oh, what a house, why did I come here?' But still the house is happy and the house is benefited by their presence."

• 2nd house → resources, accumulating money. 9th house → protection, fortune, guru and guidance.
• What happened: on April 7 or 8, 1998 — as soon as Venus's portion began — Pt. Sanjay Rath wrote accepting him as a student, his second. He then gave PVNR a lot of time by email and phone.

Mercury (Oct 1998 – Apr 1999)

• Mercury is lagna lord and 10th lord. His presence uplifts Aries just as Venus's does.
• → good health, good career, doing well in the job. An overall positive period, and it was.
• A student objects: lagna lord in the 8th is bad for health. PVNR: forget the 8th house here. Aries itself is the 8th house, and it gives that result in its own third (2003–2007). In Mercury's portion Aries gives the result of holding the lagna lord, and that is good health.

"There are so many parameters. What I am saying is the peak of each parameter will come at a particular predestined period."

Mars's Slot: 4 Quarters (Malefic — Avastha First)

Mars is 3rd and 8th lord, in Aries in the 8th house, and Amatyakaraka. A malefic — "no doubts".

Quarter 1 (Apr 1999 – Apr 2000): Mars's Avastha

• Moderate Uchcha Bala, but he is in his own house; PVNR calls it Moolatrikona — "an excellent strength". (Mars is at 26°40' Aries.)
• His Sayanadi avastha is also a very active, energetic one — Nrityalipsa, the same as the Sun's.
• 8th lord in the 8th in strength → very good results for the 8th house and for Mars's own significations.
• Sarala Yoga: a planet in the 8th house in its own sign. (In the 6th in its own sign it is Harsha Yoga; in the 12th, Vimala Yoga.) Yogas belong to the second quarter, but this one is not between two planets — Mars gives it by himself, out of his own state — so it is felt here.
• Result: a good period — a lot of occult learning, good health, being very straightforward.

Quarter 2 (Apr 2000 – Apr 2001): Mars's Yogas

Good yogas:

• Viparita Raja Yoga with Saturn — 8th lord with 6th lord
• Rajasambandha Yoga (Parasara): Amatyakaraka conjoining the 10th lord (Mercury) → an important person in a king's court
• A second Rajasambandha Yoga: Amatyakaraka in own sign
• Guru-Mangala Yoga with Jupiter
• Vesi Yoga: a planet other than the Moon and the nodes in the 2nd from the Sun → balanced, truthful, happy. ("You should not use these as capsules.")

Bad yogas:

• Mars, a malefic and 8th lord, afflicts the lagna lord, 5th lord and 9th lord — all three trine lords.

Which wins? Closeness. Mars is in the 27th degree. Saturn at 15°06' is the closest; Venus is around 8° and Mercury at 3° — "the good planets are actually far away". Saturn is 5th lord but also 6th lord, so the Viparita yoga gives the stronger result. Had Mars been close to Mercury, you would predict problems instead — in health and career, Mercury being lagna lord and 10th lord.

Mars is in yoga with every planet except the Moon and the nodes.

Settling abroad:

"If the badhaka lord or the 8th lord is associated with the lagna lord, 9th lord, etc., the person can settle abroad during that period."

Here both hold: the badhaka lord is Jupiter (lord of Pisces, the badhakasthana), in mutual aspect with Mars, the 8th lord, and with the lagna lord and 9th lord beside him.

The 8th lord afflicting the trine lords shows being displaced. "I am settling here means I am displaced from my motherland. I may be making money, but you can look at it negatively also."

• What happened: recognition at work — "my manager is a king and I was an important person in her court" — and he got his green card.

Quarter 3 (Apr 2001 – Apr 2002): Houses Owned = 3rd and 8th

Forget here that Mars is strong in his own house and that he is with good planets. Only: the 3rd and 8th lord is in the dasha sign.

• 3rd = writing. 8th = changes in life.
• 3rd = buying a house or vehicle. The 3rd is the 12th from the 4th — the big expenditure on 4th house matters. Mars is the karaka of taking a loan and buying a house.
• Do not look for a strong 4th house when someone buys a house. The 4th is sukha, comfort. In the year of buying, moving and furnishing he is spending, not enjoying — that is the 3rd.
• 3rd and 8th lord in a good house would be bad. 3rd and 8th lord in a dusthana is good. So: much instability, but in a positive way.
• What happened: he changed his job (left his employer for a startup, turning down a counter-offer) and bought a new house — construction began in March, the house was handed over at the end of July, they moved in in August. A year of instability.

Quarter 4 (Apr 2002 – Apr 2003): House Occupied = 8th

• A student says good, because he is in his own house. PVNR: Mars has had his chances to give that. This quarter is for Mars simply being in the 8th house — and that is bad. Health problems are possible; a problematic period.
• Mars is Amatyakaraka. Amatyakaraka in the 8th → trouble in career. As karaka of brothers he could have given trouble there too; that did not happen.
• Not terrible, because he is in his own house. Compare a Libra lagna with Mars as 7th lord in the 8th in Taurus — that would be terrible. Again the range: within it, things bottom out.

"All the previous periods were good. Only when the time came for him to give the result of his placement, then he showed the colors of being Mars in the 8th house."

• What happened: in August 2002 the startup, its product ready, laid off a big part of the engineering team and went into hibernation. He lost his job. He then worked from home for a company in another city — much travel, part engineering, part managing a remote team, part customer work. Mars is dynamism and the 8th is change: the job was "more dynamic than I wanted". He was not happy with it.

Aries Sign Slot (Apr 2003 – Apr 2007)

From Arudha Lagna — 6th house, a malefic sign

• A malefic planet in the 3rd or 6th from AL is good; a benefic there is bad. The same holds for bare signs.
• Bad means materially. Mercury, Jupiter or Venus in the 3rd or 6th from AL give material losses or giving up material things — the image of someone saintly and soft. "When somebody hits you, you don't hit them back." For a saint's chart that is good.
• A student calls it renunciation. PVNR: not exactly — renunciation needs a pravrajya yoga. This is being saintly, adjusting.
• Malefics there: the person is seen as materially successful, not as a saint.
• Aries is a malefic sign because Mars owns it. Aries in the 6th from AL → good for material success.

"When you are looking from lagna, it is the true you, so all the combinations are stationary. They don't change from time to time, place to place. But when you look at Arudha Lagna, the results of various combinations are desha-kala-patra dependent."

Arudha is image and status, and those are material; they depend on who you are.

From Lagna — 8th house

• Good for occult studies. Bad for health: health problems, tension and anxiety about health.
• "I have to be careful about my health during this period. Actually, for the last one year my health is not really great." The class is being held inside this third.

From Moon — 3rd house

• At the level of the mind: initiative, a lot of mental energy to do things.

Signs aspecting Aries

• Aquarius, the 6th house → fights
• Scorpio, the 3rd house → communication
• Leo, the 12th house → giving and losses

All of this is felt between April 2003 and April 2007. No further subdivision is known.

Additional Interpretive Rules Covered

The Rule Works in Divisional Charts Too

A student asks whether it works on any divisional chart. PVNR: yes, on the Narayana Dasha of any divisional chart. "Then you have to focus on that particular area, like career or learning." Examples are promised for a later class.

"This is something more than antardashas themselves... this particular principle is something that works pretty consistently. So you can try it in a lot of charts."

Homework: apply the three parts rule to the Narayana Dasha of your own chart.

Why Other Sources May Differ

The rule is also in Pt. Sanjay Rath's book Narayana Dasa and on the Vedic Astrology Yahoo group, sometimes in a different form.

"Sanjayji is very well known for intentionally giving different kinds of inputs so that people have to work hard to actually parse it and understand what is the correct knowledge. He doesn't like spoon-feeding. I love spoon-feeding."

• What is taught in this class is what Sanjay Rath taught PVNR privately and uses himself, and what PVNR finds working in practice.
• PVNR admits he has done the same: on the Yahoo group he once gave the lord's portion as divided into 3 parts instead of 4.

"Those who are destined to get the right knowledge... will put some effort and they will get the right knowledge. So don't be confused if you see some inconsistencies. This is what works."
