Why Drekkana Next

Drekkāṇa lagna changes at 10° and 20° of the rāśi lagna. At the given 8:45 PM it was Capricorn. Moving the lagna past 20° makes it Taurus. So the D-3 can confirm what the Navāṁśa showed.

The native has 6 elder siblings and 1 younger.

Counting Siblings

• Younger siblings: 3rd house, then 3rd from it (5th), then 7th, and so on.
• Elder siblings: 11th house, then 11th from it (9th), then 7th, 5th, and so on.
• Odd lagna: count forward. Even lagna: count backward.
• With many siblings the same sign comes round again. There are exceptions for that case; PVNR does not go into them, and takes the single younger sibling first because it is simpler.

The Sibling's Lagna

1. Find the sign of the sibling.
2. Find its lord (the pāka).
3. The sign holding that lord is the lagna for that sibling. Read all houses from it.

Limits: one Drekkāṇa is shared by all siblings and you do not have the sibling's own divisional charts. You get the basic nature and the major events that are tangible to the native. It need not correlate with the sibling's own chart.

The Younger Sister

D-3 lagna Taurus is even, so count backward: Taurus, Aries, Pisces. Lord Jupiter is in Libra. Libra is her lagna.

• Jupiter in lagna. The class read it as intelligent and pious. The native: slightly off, she is not very intelligent.
• Why: Jupiter in lagna is not enough. See the 5th house. Its lords are Saturn and Rahu, and Saturn is in the 12th. The 5th lord in the 12th, and the planets controlling the 5th are anti-Jupiter planets.
• Build: a student guessed fat from Jupiter in lagna. PVNR: Mars and Saturn also influence the lagna, so there are two indications and it is not clear. Basic things like intelligence and job show more clearly.
• Career. The 10th lord Moon is in the 6th and the 7th is empty, so service, not business. Moon is in Jupiter's sign, and Jupiter is the natural teacher: a teacher, but a caring kind. Not a college lecturer; teaching small children is more taking care of them than giving scholarship. Confirmed: she works on and off as a teacher.
• Rahu in the 10th would normally show a diplomat or engineer. Here he is in Moon's sign, an enemy's sign, and Moon has gone into another artha trikoṇa (the 6th), so Moon dominates. Rahu cannot decide the career; he gives changes and setbacks.
• Mercury in the 8th (see below).
• Mars in the 2nd: aggressive speech. Confirmed: "very authoritative and very forceful."
• Lagna lord Venus in the 11th of friends, and lagna is Libra: she is diplomatic and has friends, though the speech is aggressive.
• Why on and off? The 6th shows her career more than the 10th. The 7th is the 2nd from the 6th, so the 7th house is always māraka to service. Mars owns the 7th (Aries) and aspects it by rāśi dṛṣṭi from Scorpio, so the māraka house for service is strong. A strong 7th with no planet in it does not have to mean business; it can mean service stopping many times.
• Mars also aspects the 10th (Cancer) by rāśi dṛṣṭi: some aggression in her conduct in society. But Venus has argala on the 10th (he is in the 2nd from it), and he is lagna lord. Overall diplomatic, skilled with people, yet stubborn and aggressive in speech.
• Sex. Jupiter is in an odd sign, but it is Venus's sign and Venus and Mercury both aspect him (rāśi dṛṣṭi). Venus is the stronger influence, so female.

Placements Explained Along the Way

Sun in the 9th (Dharma sthāna) — seen from her lagna:

• Very idealistic, strong in principle, usually willing to force principles on others. Kingly or queenly.
• You get people like Rajiv Gandhi when Sun is in a trine, either in the rāśi chart or the Daśāṁśa. They cannot adapt and cannot change.

Mercury in the 8th:

• For many planets the 8th is a bad placement. For Mercury it is a good one.
• The person is widely read and knows something about many subjects. You can talk to them about anything.
• If Mercury is not strong it becomes a jack of all trades.

Sex of Siblings in D-3

• Look at the sign holding the lord, the planets with him and the planets aspecting him.
• "In Drekkāṇa, if you time the sex of your siblings, it works less reliably than in Saptāṁśa. … Sometimes you have to be satisfied with less than perfect logic."

The Sibling's Spouse: Upapada

Do not take the 7th from the sibling's lagna.

"His relation with his sibling is not Maya. There is a real relationship. They were born to the same mother. … but the relationship to the brother-in-law is only through Maya. So you see only Upapada."

• Take the Upapada (ārūḍha of the 12th) counted from the sibling's lagna. That sign is the lagna of the sibling's spouse.
• Shortcut with software: the 12th from Libra is Virgo, which is the 5th of the D-3 itself, so look for A5.
• For the sister it falls in Capricorn, with Ketu in it.

The Brother-in-Law (Capricorn Lagna)

• Ketu in lagna: either a spiritual person or a stubborn one who is very tough to argue with. Ketu is headless, so sometimes a little eccentric: he acts without thinking, you cannot see why, and you cannot convince him otherwise. It can be both. Native: he is tough to argue with, and not very religious.
• Capricorn is a tāmasik sign, the sign of Kali, so headlessness more than spirituality. PVNR then corrects himself: you cannot decide from the sign alone. Whether Ketu in lagna gives spirituality or only stubbornness depends on the 9th house.
• Saturn in the 9th. Jupiter in the 9th makes a person very religious and orthodox. Saturn or Rahu in the 9th gives a leaning to atheism. He will follow customs and rules he is taught, but when it comes to believing in God he questions. Other factors may stop him being an atheist; the tendency is there.
• Jupiter in the 10th in Venus's sign: a good teacher. Native: he won a best-teacher award.
• Mercury in the 5th: quite intelligent.
• Lagna lord in the 9th: the 9th is the house of the boss. "If lagna lord is in the house of boss, you are your own boss." Such people do not like to be dictated to. But the planet here is Saturn, the servant, so it is mixed: he follows the world to an extent and still keeps much individuality. A Leo lagna with Sun in Aries in the 9th would be plainly king-like.

Timing for the Relative Uses the Native's Own Dashas

The daśās are the native's Vimshottari, read from the relative's lagna. They are phases of that person's life from the native's point of view. Do not expect to find when the relative's first child was born or when he joined a job.

Mercury daśā (1980–1997): Mercury is in the brother-in-law's 5th. A good period for abilities and scholarship.

Ketu daśā: Ketu co-owns Scorpio, the 11th from Capricorn, and is in lagna. Gains are likely. The stubbornness also shows. But Ketu is the bādhaka.

Badhakasthana

• Movable lagna: the 11th is the bādhakasthāna.
• Fixed lagna: the 9th.
• Dual lagna: the 7th.

Bādhā means trouble. What kind:

• 6th house: worries from enemies.
• 8th house: ill health, anxiety, tension. These have a reason, a physiological cause.
• Bādhaka: troubles that cannot be diagnosed. Inexplicable worries, tensions, nuisance.
• Strictly by śāstra, bādhaka trouble is from pretas and bhūtas. Do not picture the white ghost of the films. Many forces work on the mind every day; because of karma some of them act on us, and a person is suddenly depressed or frustrated for no reason. These troubles are usually subconscious or mental.

So Ketu daśā for the brother-in-law: financial gain, and beside it something that keeps going wrong for no explicable reason. This cannot be said with certainty from Vimshottari alone. If the person reports it, conclude it is Ketu and prescribe a remedy; PVNR mentions praying to Gaṇeśa.

Venus daśā (now running):

• Brother-in-law: Venus owns the 5th and 10th from Capricorn, a yogakāraka, so decent results. But he is in the 8th, in an inimical sign (Sun's): some chance of ill health. The 10th lord in the 8th also shows retirement, the end of the career, sometime in the 20 years. The 5th lord in the 8th is good for learning occult subjects, if he is so inclined.
• Sister: Venus is lagna lord in the 11th. The 11th is her bādhakasthāna, but a planet in the bādhakasthāna is less of a problem than the bādhaka lord himself. A good daśā: friends and gains.

Sibling's Children: 9th from Upada

Rule: the native's link with a nephew or niece is also through Maya. Take the 9th house from the Upapada. Children are the dharma of the marriage.

• That sign shows the children as one unit. You cannot predict for each child from the Drekkāṇa; for that you need their own charts.
• The planets in it, owning it and aspecting it are the ones able to give children.
• Order of importance: planet in the sign, then the lord, then the planets aspecting.

For the younger sister: Upapada is Capricorn. The 9th from it is Virgo. She has two daughters, aged 14 and 10.

• Saturn is in Virgo. Saturn in a female sign gives a female child.
• Mercury owns it and can give another female child.
• Sun aspects it (rāśi dṛṣṭi from Gemini) and could give a male. Moon aspects it (from Pisces, by graha and rāśi dṛṣṭi) and could give a female. Aspects rank last.
• So most likely the first child was given by Saturn and the second by Mercury: the first girl's chart should show a strong Saturn, the second's a strong Mercury. The native did not know their charts.
• Do not take Saturn's sign and Mercury's sign as separate lagnas for the two girls. "Some people do that." The prudent course is to take Virgo as lagna for the children as a whole.

Venus daśā for these children (Virgo as lagna): Venus owns the 2nd and 9th and is in the 12th. The 9th is also the house of foreign travel. They are likely to leave their motherland for a faraway place in this daśā. It is still a good daśā: Venus is the 9th lord and protects them.

Confirming D-3 and Drekkana Analysis

The Elder Brother: Check for a Miscarriage First

Count 11 backward from Taurus: Cancer. Rahu is in Cancer.

• Rahu in the sign usually shows the end of the line. Or it shows something that went wrong, a miscarriage. So PVNR asks. Answer: the immediate elder is a brother, and there was one miscarriage between them.
• A foetus was formed, so that was the elder sibling. It did not survive because of Rahu.
• The brother he counts as his immediate elder is therefore the second elder: the 11th from Cancer, Virgo. Lord Mercury is in Taurus. The elder brother's lagna is Taurus, the D-3 lagna itself.
• Sex: Taurus is Venus's sign. PVNR would not have confidently predicted a male. He accepts it at face value. In Saptāṁśa the same method "works beautifully."

Always ask about miscarriages, in D-3 and D-7 alike, even where there is no Rahu but something about that sibling or child looks shaky.

• A miscarriage shifts everything by one: instead of the 3rd you take the 5th, instead of the 5th the 7th. Miss it and every reading is off.
• People may say there was none when there was. Depending on the planet that ends the pregnancy it can end in days, weeks or months; in the first month the parents may not know.
• If a child does not fit its sign, and that pregnancy shows signs of termination, try the next sign. If that fits, conclude there was a miscarriage they do not know of.

Rahu and Ketu End the Line

A student asked whether Ketu does the same. Yes, both. In a sequence of siblings or children, Rahu and Ketu put the stop. When Rahu is met, that is the end, unless a strong Jupiter in the next sign makes you jump to it. (Worked out for the children in Part 8.)

The Elder Brother (Taurus Lagna)

• Mercury in lagna: smart, not wise. Mercury is a copy machine: you read something and you remember it. He gives a quick, adaptive, flexible learner. Wisdom, knowing what is right and what is not, comes only from Jupiter, and Jupiter is in the 6th, not strong.
• Rahu in the 3rd: strong initiative and stubbornness. Confirmed; their father used to call him mūrkha.
• Rahu in the 3rd vs. Ketu in lagna: Ketu in lagna does not listen and does not care whether anyone understands; he just goes his own way. Rahu in the 3rd argues and fights and wants to convince people.
• Mars in the 7th in Scorpio: Ruchaka Mahāpuruṣa yoga, retrograde, aspected by Rahu (rāśi dṛṣṭi). Bold, a gang-leader type who tells people what to do.
• Sun in the 2nd: commanding, authoritative speech. But it is Mercury's sign, and Mercury is the kāraka of speech, so he is articulate and can convince, not merely aggressive.
• Saturn aspects that Sun by graha dṛṣṭi and rāśi dṛṣṭi both. Saturn or Mars on the 2nd house does not make a truthful speaker. Sun in an artha trikoṇa with Saturn's aspect: he can criticise needlessly and land in controversies with the authorities.
• Confirmed: he speaks out his mind. "King doesn't calculate. Servants have to calculate before they speak."

The Sister-in-Law (Upapada from Taurus = Gemini)

Gemini holds Sun.

• Prediction that failed. Sun in Upapada shows someone authoritative, or from a high, aristocratic, well-connected family. The native: neither. She is not dominating.
• Why: Saturn and Moon aspect that Sun. Sun makes a king, Saturn makes a servant. The influence is mixed.
• Saturn in the 4th: Saturn takes away whatever house he is in. In the 4th he takes away sukha. She has sukha lopa.
• Ketu in the 8th: long life, but constant health problems, nothing serious, that come without a clear explanation. Ketu burns wherever he is. Confirmed: health problems once in a while.
• Appearance. The native said there was something about her appearance and asked the class to find it. PVNR: appearance is hard to see from an Upapada. Guesses offered: Rahu in the 2nd, so the eyes; Mars and Saturn both aspect the lagna, and Saturn is the 8th lord and Ketu's dispositor, so the looks suffer; Saturn, so the legs. The native then said she had been affected by polio. The guess was right, "whether it is based on good logic or not."
• Heart. A student pointed to Saturn in the 4th. Some heart trouble is possible, but the main reading is sukha lopa. The 4th shows comfort and it shows the heart: a person filled with happiness has a healthy heart; one made to bear pain does not. PVNR is sure she took a lot of pain because of her husband's attitude, whether or not she shared it.
• Do not use the natural zodiac here. A student argued from the natural 4th sign. PVNR: that would give every sibling and every spouse the same problem. "That is totally illogical." Use the lagna you derived.

What a Chart of Relatives Can Show

A student's question: if this is the sibling's life as the native sees it, how can it show what he does not know? PVNR: it shows the reality from his point of view. Something he is not aware of even to a small extent is very unlikely to show.

The Elder Brother's Child (9th from Upapada = Aquarius)

He has one son.

• How many children there will be you cannot say; how many are possible, and which planets can give them, you can.
• No planet is in Aquarius. So look at the lord. Aquarius has two: Saturn and Rahu.

Which of two lords is stronger (Saturn/Rahu for Aquarius; the same for Mars/Ketu for Scorpio):

1. The one with more planets conjoined wins. Here both are alone.
2. Then count, out of Mercury, Jupiter and the planet's own dispositor, how many are with the planet or have rāśi dṛṣṭi on it. If Mercury or Jupiter is also the dispositor, it counts twice.

• Saturn in Virgo: Sun and Moon have rāśi dṛṣṭi on him, but Mercury does not, Jupiter does not, and the dispositor is Mercury again. Count 0.
• Rahu in Cancer: Mercury in Taurus has rāśi dṛṣṭi on him. Jupiter does not. The dispositor Moon does not. Count 1.
• Rahu is stronger. Rahu gives the child.

Why Mercury and Jupiter? "I'll answer it later, maybe after 6 months. … It's a philosophy, not one sentence."

Sex from signs: odd signs give males, even signs females. Four exceptions: Gemini female, Cancer male, Aquarius female, Pisces male. Rahu in Cancer: strongly a boy. Here the Drekkāṇa worked.

The son's own chart should show a strong Rahu or Cancer. The native: he was born in a Rahu nakṣatra.

Venus daśā for this child (Aquarius as lagna): Venus is the 4th and 9th lord, a yogakāraka, in the 7th. The child does well.

Verdict

For the younger sister many things match; for the elder brother most things match. The Taurus Drekkāṇa lagna is right, the Cancer Navāṁśa lagna was already confirmed, so the corrected time stands.
