Purusharthas, Digbala & Shadbala — The Complete Strength Framework

Purusharthas (four life goals) and their planetary affinities: Dharma (Jupiter, Sun), Artha (Mercury, Saturn), Kama (Moon, Venus, Mars), Moksha (Ketu, Jupiter). Which trikona corresponds to which Purushartha. Digbala (directional strength): Mercury+Jupiter in 1H (East), Sun+Mars in 10H (South), Saturn in 7H (West), Moon+Venus in 4H (North). Shadbala (sixfold strength) complete framework: Sthana Bala, Dig Bala, Kala Bala, Chesta Bala (retrogradation), Naisargika Bala, Drig Bala. Kala Bala sub-components: Natha/Unnatha, Paksha, Tribhaga, Abda, Masa, Vara, Hora Bala.

"Shadbala gives you a 6-dimensional view of planetary strength. Each dimension measures strength from a different angle — position, direction, time, motion, nature, aspect."

— P.V.R. Narasimha Rao

Purusharthas — The Four Life Directions

PVNR begins by answering a student question about the relationship between planets and the four Purusharthas.

The Four Purusharthas:

PurusharthaMeaningRuling House TrikonaPlanets with Affinity
DharmaRight conduct, purpose, duty1H, 5H, 9HMercury + Jupiter
ArthaWealth, achievement, material accomplishment2H, 6H, 10HSun + Mars
KamaDesire, pleasure, relationships3H, 7H, 11HSaturn
MokshaLiberation, peace, transcendence4H, 8H, 12HMoon + Venus

Critical distinction: These are NOT karakas. They are planets that have a DESIRE or AFFINITY to influence those trikonas:

  • Mercury + Jupiter want to tell the person what to do — they want to shape the person's sense of dharma, guide their path, give them wisdom about right action. They are the planets of discernment.

  • Sun + Mars want to make the person act — they are action planets. They want the person to be doing things in the material world, achieving, struggling, accomplishing.

  • Saturn wants to give desire — Saturn's nature is hard work without enjoyment, but he has an affinity for the Kama trikona because his desire is to give the native desire so they will work hard. Saturn says: "I'll put a burning desire in you so you can't stop working."

  • Moon + Venus want to give happiness and relaxation — they are natural karakas for the 4H (comfort, peace). Moon gives relaxed, lunar happiness; Venus gives pleasure and luxury. The 4H is the starting point of moksha — relaxation is the beginning of letting go. That's why they have affinity for the Moksha trikona.

"Moon and Venus want the person to be relaxed and happy, not have strong desires. That is why they have an affinity towards the 4th house."

— PVNR

Digbala — Directional Strength

What Digbala shows: Each planet has an "ideal direction" in life that it wants to give the native. Digbala measures how happy a planet is with the direction it has been placed in charge of — i.e., which house it occupies.

Digbala table:

PlanetIdeal House (Max Digbala)DirectionPurushartha Governed
Mercury1H (Lagna)EastDharma
Jupiter1H (Lagna)EastDharma
Sun10HSouthArtha
Mars10HSouthArtha
Saturn7HWestKama
Moon4HNorthMoksha
Venus4HNorthMoksha

Scale: Digbala is scored on a scale of 0 to 60. Maximum score = 60 when the planet is exactly on the cusp of its ideal house.

Why 10H for Sun+Mars? They want to control the Artha trikona — purpose served in the world. The 10H is the primary Artha house (karma, professional standing). So when Sun or Mars is in the 10H, they are told: "You are in charge of this person's action in the world." They are thrilled.

Why 1H for Mercury+Jupiter? They want to control the Dharma trikona — telling the person what to do and how. The 1H is the base of dharma (Lagna = 1H, 5H, 9H form dharma trikona). So in 1H, Mercury and Jupiter can most directly influence the person's sense of duty and path.

Why 7H for Saturn? The 7H is the base of the Kama trikona (3H, 7H, 11H). When Saturn is in the 7H, he is told: "Give desire to this person." Saturn says: "Yes! I can give him desire to work hard." He is happy. (Note: Saturn in 7H may have other chart problems — this is only about Digbala score.)

Why 4H for Moon+Venus? The 4H is the starting point of Moksha trikona (4H, 8H, 12H). When Moon and Venus are in the 4H, they are in their natural domain — giving the native comfort, relaxation, and the beginning of moksha through peace.

Digbala in Divisional Charts

Important: Digbala applies in ALL divisional charts, not just the Rasi.

If Sun and Mars are in the 10H of the Navamsa, they have excellent Digbala in the matter of dharma (which is what Navamsa governs). This means those planets are very strong in supporting the native's dharma implementation.

"If you see any of these planets placed in the ideal house from the point of view of Purushartha in any divisional chart, that is very auspicious, extremely auspicious."

— PVNR

The four houses 1, 4, 7, 10 (Kendras) are the houses of Vishnu — the houses where energy is concentrated and from which all life directions are governed.

Shadbala — The Six-Fold Strength System

Shadbala = six-source strength. It comes from 6 different balas:

BalaWhat it MeasuresScale
Sthana BalaLocational/positional strength (sign occupied)0–360 (highest!)
Dig BalaDirectional strength (house occupied)0–60
Kala BalaTemporal strength (time-based factors)Large scale
Chesta BalaMotional strength (speed, retrograde, etc.)0–60
Naisargika BalaNatural inherent strength of the planetFixed for all charts
Drig BalaAspect-based strength (can be NEGATIVE)Positive or negative

Kala Bala sub-components include: Natha/Unnatha (born in day/night, planet elevated or humbled), Paksha Bala (waxing/waning fortnight), Tribhaga Bala (day divided into 3 parts), Abda Bala (annual, year ruler), Masa Bala (monthly), Vara Bala (weekday), Hora Bala (planetary hour)

The further down you go in the temporal hierarchy, the more important it is: Hora is 4× stronger than the year in importance.

Naisargika Bala natural order (Sun=strongest → Saturn=weakest):
Sun > Moon > Venus > Jupiter > Mercury > Mars > Saturn

The Correct Purpose of Shadbala

PVNR makes a critical clarification that is commonly misunderstood:

"This strength does NOT reflect upon a planet's ability to give its result. This strength is for a specific purpose: when two or more planets are involved in a yoga, which one will actually give the results of the yoga? That's it."

— PVNR

What Shadbala is NOT: A measure of whether a planet is good or bad in the chart.

What Shadbala IS: A tiebreaker. When Jupiter and Mercury are both involved in a Raj Yoga, Shadbala tells you which one will actually deliver the result. The stronger one (higher Shadbala) will be the active deliverer; the weaker one steps back.

Analogy: "If Sriram and I decide to do a task together, but I am busy, Sriram will actually run with it and write the checks. That is like a planet with stronger Shadbala."

Implications:

  • A planet with low Shadbala is not a bad planet — it just cannot deliver results as forcefully
  • A planet with high Shadbala is not a good planet — it can deliver results very forcefully, whether those results are good or bad
