Swami Vivekananda — Data and Calculation

• 12 January 1863, 6:33 AM, local mean time, 5 h 54 m east of GMT. 88°30' E, 22°40' N.
• Sagittarius lagna. Some hold the time is not local time and take Capricorn lagna. The teacher rejects it: his bearing, facial features, the way he stood and his whole life are Sagittarius.
• Atmakaraka is the Sun, at 29° in the rasi — the most advanced planet. The atmakaraka is taken from the rasi, not found afresh in each divisional chart.
• The class uses a calculation option the teacher has just adopted. A student on other settings gets the D10 Moon in Libra instead of Scorpio and has to switch. The divisional placements below are the class's. A standard modern ephemeris reproduces the lagna, Sun, Saturn, and the D10 Jupiter and Venus, but puts several other divisional placements one sign away.

Why the method changed

A student asks how this differs from the earlier readings of the same chart, which also "explained" everything.

• Earlier there was a logic for each event but no consistency: a candidate was good in one chart and bad in the next.
• Now there are fewer parameters and simpler rules, applied the same way every time.

Vivekananda D10 — Fame in Ketu Dasha

The life

• No career to speak of. He looked for work, held a small job, supported his mother and sisters after his father died, and left it.
• Before 1893 he was a nobody. The scholars of Kashi refused to debate him. After Chicago the same scholars seated him and honoured him.
• The Parliament of Religions was in September 1893. He had the date wrong and arrived months early, without money.

The yoga in D10 (lagna 17° Leo)

• Moon 17°30', Venus 23°30', Jupiter 26°30' — all in Scorpio, the 4th house, a quadrant.
• Gajakesari yoga in a quadrant.
• Jupiter is 5th lord, Venus is 10th lord: a raja yoga, and the two are within 3° in divisional longitude. The Moon is within reach.
• Functional nature: Jupiter benefic, Moon neutral, Venus malefic. The yoga involves a benefic and is tight, so it is powerful.

AL and A5 in the same sign

• AL is at 4° Scorpio, A5 at 6° Scorpio. The arudha of lagna and the arudha of the 5th are together.
• By longitude the three planets fall in the 2nd house from A5. Planets in the 2nd from an arudha feed it.
• AL is the image; A5 is the following. Together, as with the conjunctions of AL, A5, A9 and A10 taught earlier, the person becomes famous.
• Gajakesari alone can make a man famous. A 5th lord–10th lord raja yoga alone can. Here both sit on AL and A5.

Dasha

• No special condition holds (Part 2). Chandra hora, Krishna paksha → Shodashottari of the D10.
• Ketu mahadasha ran 1888–1903. Chicago fell in it.

Why Ketu

• Ketu is the stronger lord of Scorpio. He is the dispositor of the raja yoga and of AL and A5. The dispositor of AL and A5 can give name and a tangible image.
• Ketu is at 2°30' Virgo. Counted from AL and A5 at 4°–6° Scorpio, that is almost on the cusp of the 11th house.
• Parashara: any planet in the 11th from an arudha makes that arudha flourish. Here the lord of the arudha's sign is himself in the 11th from it.

"He is a lord of the arudha pada in the 11th house. What does Parashara say about the 11th house from an arudha? Any planet in the 11th house from an arudha will make it flourish."

Vivekananda D20 — Guru, Loss of Guru, Deity

Dasha

• D20 lagna 4° Capricorn. No special condition: 10th lord not in the 10th, lagna lord not in the 7th, lagna not vargottama, lagna lord not in a quadrant or trine from Rahu.
• Chandra hora, Krishna paksha → Shodashottari of the D20, counted from the Moon's nakshatra in the D20.

Moon dasha (1868–1884) brought the guru

The teacher dates the meeting with Ramakrishna to about 1878–79, with more time spent from 1880 and the hardest training in 1883–84.

• Moon is 7th lord in the 9th house. 7th lord = interaction. 9th = guru, dharma. Interaction with the guru, and with many people on matters of dharma.
• Functional nature. The rules as recited: lords of 1, 5, 9 are benefic; lords of 3, 6, 11 are malefic; lords of 2, 8, 12 are neutral and go by their other house; a quadrant lord is benefic if a natural malefic and malefic if a natural benefic. This is a Krishna paksha Moon, a natural malefic, owning a quadrant → a slight functional benefic. A functional benefic in the 9th blesses the 9th.
• The new factor: A9 is in Cancer, in the 7th house. A9 is the tangible guidance of a guru. Moon is the lord of A9.
• Jupiter sits with A9. In this chart Jupiter is a functional malefic. But he is a natural benefic, the karaka for guru, and exalted in a quadrant giving Hamsa Mahapurusha yoga — that cannot be ignored. A student's point, accepted by the teacher: "Jupiter is there, that is why."

Mercury dasha took the guru away

Ramakrishna left the body on 16 August 1886.

• Read from A9 (Cancer) as lagna: Mercury owns the 3rd and the 12th → a functional malefic. He is in the 8th house from A9.
• A functional malefic in the 8th from A9 takes away what A9 stands for: the physical guidance and the body of the guru.
• Venus is likewise a functional malefic from A9 and is in the 3rd from it. Two functional malefics, one in the 8th and one in the 3rd from A9.
• The teacher sets other arudhas aside: "Just A9 only. A9 is the tangible guidance from a guru."

What was lost and what was not

• While the guru lived, Vivekananda told him to his face that his visions might be hallucinations and that there was no Kali, only Brahman. He was under Brahmo Samaj influence.
• He understood the guru's worth only after the guru was gone, and went through a painful period.
• The guru still guided him: the vision at Kanyakumari pointing across the ocean, Sarada Devi's letter of consent, the meditation by the lake in Chicago after he lost his letter of introduction.
• So the subtle guidance continued. What the Mercury dasha removed was the tangible guidance — A9.

Upasana deity

• Atmakaraka Sun is in Pisces in the D20, the chart of upasana.
• The sign read for the deity is Aquarius, the 12th from it. Mercury is there. Its lords are Saturn and Rahu; Rahu is the stronger.
• Rahu, with Ketu, is in a martial sign. Parashara gives Rahu a tamasic deity, Durga. In a martial sign: a fierce devata — Durga or Kali.
• His favourite prayers were the Chandi Patha and the Kali dhyana.

Vivekananda D9 — Why No Marriage

The 7th house

• Navamsa lagna is Scorpio with Jupiter in it. The lagna is powerful.
• Lagna lord is in the 8th house.
• Saturn and Mercury are in the 7th house. Saturn is the 3rd lord, Mercury the 8th lord.
• Both are functional malefics by Parashara's rules. Two functional malefics in the 7th.
• 3rd lord and 8th lord together in the 7th is a maraka combination for the 7th. The 8th lord in the 7th is the same thing again.
• Saturn and Mercury are the neuter (napumsaka) planets.
• Marriage is denied.

The objection: Ketu in the Upapada

A student objects. Ketu is in the UL, and Ketu is a lord of the Scorpio lagna. A lagna lord in the UL should make the UL flourish and give marriage.

The teacher's answer:

• Weigh the two. The 7th house is very badly afflicted and the lagna lord is weak.
• Upapada is not only marriage. It is giving — giving up something of your own.
• Navamsa is the chart of dharma, not a chart of sex. Marriage is one dharmic activity among others.
• A man can give himself to a wife. A man can also give himself to an order and to disciples. That too is giving in dharma.
• Here the spiritual planet Ketu is in the UL. The UL lord Sun is in a trine from it, in Sagittarius, the sign of dharma. Jupiter is in lagna. The dharma trikona is strong; the 7th is not.
• The upapada bore fruit in dharma, not in marriage.

"Navamsa is dharma, not just marriage. Navamsa is not a chart of sex, it is a chart of dharma. And marriage is basically a dharmic activity."
