Jaimini Sutras 1.2.91–1.2.95: Disease Indicators from the 4th/5th of Swamsa

The earlier sutras spoke only of the 5th. From here Jaimini brings in the 4th as well.

Sutra 1.2.91 — Rahu and Mars: tuberculosis

• Rahu and Mars in the 4th or 5th from Swamsa → tuberculosis is indicated.
• Both are needed. A student asked about a chart with Rahu alone in the 5th: "Mars is also required. It is Mars and Rahu, it is not just one of them."
• If the Moon also aspects or joins the combination, the disease is sure to occur.

"The Moon represents the sustenance force."

• The same principle is used for poverty: malefics in the 2nd or 8th from Arudha Lagna give Khemadruma Yoga, and if the Moon aspects them the poverty is sure to happen (see Part 4).

How far to trust a disease sutra

• These are upadesa — advisory stanzas. Jaimini assumes the reader has studied Parasara. They show a possibility, not a verdict.
• Before concluding a disease, analyse the rest of the chart and go to the D-6 (D-30 is also fine) for the finer picture.
• If you do read disease from the Navamsa, use rasi drishti. Graha drishti shows desire, and nobody desires tuberculosis.
• Later in the class, asked for a tuberculosis example: "It's not like Rahu and Mars will show up… you have to look into D-6." The teacher uses the Navamsa mainly for strengths and weaknesses, rectification and finances, not for disease.

Sutra 1.2.92 — Mars alone: boils, ulcers, cuts, gangrene

• Mars alone in the 4th or 5th from Swamsa → boils, ulcers, cuts or gangrene.
• A prominent Mars in the Navamsa stamps Mars on the whole person: adamant, hot-headed, prone to anger — and, in the body, frequent accidents, cuts, boils and ulcers.
• Mars is Agni tattva. It inflames and produces heat, and the same heat gives ulcers: the acid gastric juices eat the lining of the stomach when meals are missed. A pitta effect.
• "Strong" here is judged in the Navamsa itself (Mars in trines, exalted, vargottama). It has nothing to do with Mars being a yogakaraka.

Sutra 1.2.94 — Ketu: glandular and waterborne disease

• Ketu in the 4th or 5th from Swamsa → glandular ailments such as thyroid, or waterborne diseases such as dysentery and typhoid.
• Why glandular, why waterborne? A student suggested it is because Ketu rules Scorpio, the natural 8th and a water sign. The teacher: "It is possible."
• He did not settle it: the link between Ketu and the glands needs more study.
• The question led to the discussion of Scorpio in Part 7.

Sutra 1.2.95 — Rahu and Gulika: dangerous poison

• Rahu and Gulika in the 4th or 5th from Swamsa → affliction from dangerous poison. Gulika itself means poison. (An earlier sutra gave the Sun with Gulika for snake bite.)
• Parasara reads the same combination more broadly: either a doctor capable of handling deadly poisons, or one who consumes such substances. Look for it in the charts of toxicologists as well as addicts.

The teacher's reasoning, sutra by sutra

• Saturn → archer. He does not know the reason. His guess: taken positively, Saturn is concentration, and the bow needs pinpointed concentration — Arjuna looking only at the target.
• Ketu → small. Ketu is everything small in size; Rahu is big. Miniaturization is all Ketu. A telephone is an instrument of communication, so it is Mercury, but the small integrated circuits inside it are Ketu.
• Ketu cuts down. Ketu is smoky but not expansive. Example: Mars and Venus in the 2nd from Navamsa lagna make a very passionate person; Jupiter's aspect increases it, Ketu's aspect cuts it down.
• "Alone". The sutra says Ketu alone, but Ketu's effect in trines shows even with other planets there. Which one manifests depends on which planet is stronger.
• Mercury → ascetic. One of the vague stanzas; the teacher says he is not yet qualified to explain it. His guess: Mercury is the student, the one who follows a teaching.
• Rahu → metals. Rahu and Saturn are metals. Anything big is Rahu.
• Sun → blades. Blade, knife, any such weapon — and, he adds, maybe a big knife or even a fire weapon. This is why the Sun in the 3rd from Arudha Lagna shows death by such a weapon; he names Mahatma Gandhi.
• Mars → spear. Desa, kala and patra matter. The literal reading suited an age of swords. In the modern day read Mars as interest in logic and the power of execution.

Are all the sutras coded?

• A student noticed that not every sutra hides a coded number — ravinā khaḍgī has no coding in it.
• The teacher agreed. Some stanzas that open a run of sutras are coded and the following ones simply say "for Ketu this, for that planet that". But without following Jaimini's coding method you get nothing from the text. If the words also make literal sense, decode them and see whether the result holds.
